    i for one agree that PnP proabably can't work veryw ell as an MOG...a nd i say G not RPG because its been a long time since i played any game where I felt there was any  consequence to how my character was palyed.

      Character advancement is NOT roleplaying.

      For me to enjoy DDO i had to accept it really wasn't D&D; name aside.  Then you can begin to decide if you like it for what IT is; rather than holding it up to what it isn't.

     And - D&D; like the books it was influenced by; can be solo.

      Some characters are in fact; really really boring for a group -  espionage characters for example...

     ( i had a character whom at the time had to be classified a "rogue" - he was a spy that posed as a merchant - and worked fro the church.  Like all good assassins; he was a religious fanatic and so felt himself beholden to a higher order... making him judge; jury and executioner.  An immensely fun character to play - but almost everything he did required he do it alone (or in one case with another rogue; whom i eventually had to kill anyway).  What ended up happening is I would play him  in solo sessions and the DM represented him as an NPC contact that would often manipulate our party into 'missions' with information on cults and what not.  Most players didn't know that character had been a player character.

     Likewise; most RPG's run under the premise that the pC's are fairly central to the story as protagonists... DDO tried to reflect thsi by making the instances - we all run the same story...

      Of course this has its advantages AND disadvantages.

    I think my last real RPG when i had a feeling i was roleplaying was Greyhawk temple of elemental evil and before Arcanum & Fallout. Those games gave lots of variants of how to finish quests, and player could really build his character's motivations and behave based on them.
