Ok here's my learned and unbiased opinion. 1. i played since the first beta after alpha 2. at the time the only thing that was clearly developed were the hobbits 3. i thought the game was horrible and had ZERO to do with lord of the rings, it was not immersive and not nearly different from any korean game i play on a regular basis. 4. i left short after 5. returned when i got invited to the next phase of beta, there were updates but still it lacked content 6. it's an ugly game. even with everything turned up to lag inducing graphics mode, it's a hideous game IMO. the graphics are unstable on my setup, [note that wow graphics are completely tested on every possible setup known to man and are unflinchingly stable] 7. i reported everything 8. i left and came back for a final beta invite. the pre launch open beta. it was still boring, ugly, not immersive, not unique, not lordsy enough for me. Note when i posted that it was boring, or not immersive on the forumns everyone jumped on me and said how wonderful the game was.
My friend bought the game i found out, like a week ago. I went to see how much it cost in the store, to give it one last try. It's $50.00 furikkin bucks plus the monthly fee. are you furikkin kidding me????? yeah not in this life time buddy.
In my honest opinion. this game release did a disservice to the good name of Tolkien and the LOTR franchise as a whole. It's as bad as what Sony did to Star Wars with SWG. These licensors should ultimately put in the contract that they have final say if the game should be released.
So you played in beta and thought the game sucked. Then you never played after release and thought the game sucked. Does that sum it up?
You do realize when you are invited to a beta its not a finished game. Your there to help not play a free game.
Your post has 0 merit and has failed.
You're what, brain dead or something or can't read. and you sum something up why don't you sum up all the points. Lastly if your'e going to be derogatory have some merit of your own.
Let ME sum up what i said. I played in all the closed beta since alpha. I also played in the prerelease phase which alloyed everyone to get in early and get a prerelease order package or did you miss that part? The game was finished. I played right up to the day before release in retail, AND THEN QUIT.
Now the fact that many agree with my opinion gives me vindication right there. Don't get all fanboi on me, did you even play? Lastly you have something confused. Open beta doesn't mean the game isn't comparable to it's release phase. On the contrary, open beta is a bunch of stress testing to see if the servers can handle the server load. They are done with the game. Or maybe you didn't know that MR. expert betaphobe.
I'm not saying that LotRO is a failure or a bad game, since I haven't played it yet, but basing a games success off a gamesites review doesn't prove much. Games that were exellently reviewed like Supreme Commander are often outsold by worse rated games due to people more interested in the "worse" game (such as movie liscensed games). Did you know that the game "Viva Pinata" based off the children's show was almost universally acclaimed by gamesites, but I will bet you money it was completely outsold by badly reviewed games such as "Transformers" just because most people wouldn't give a game based on a kid's show a second glance. All I'm trying to point out is that 39 reviews proves nothing when viewing a game as a commercial success or failure.
Yes, everyone knows reviews are never accurate and always wrong. There is no way 39 of them all from different organizations like PCGamer, 1UP, Gamespy... could even be close to correct. As far as the rest...who knows. But there is no way any revieew could be even close to correct in the case of this game.
Sorry bro, it does prove something. The xfire stats clearly prove many people are playing. The 39 reviews clearly shows that reviews like it.
I haven't seen a game yet that got bad reviews and was wildly popular...strange coincidence???? You get bad reviews, your game dies. See just about any MMO released in the past 3 years if you need proof. How about that Dark and Light? Maybe Vanguard? Oh I know D&D.....errr..........maybe Roma Victor....Phantasy Star? Ryzom? All great successes dispite the bad reviews? Hardly. How about WoW and GW? Good reviews and strangely enough.........they are commercial successes. Thats weird how that works, isn't it?
Fact of the matter is you can not show me a game that has been commercially successful that got bad reviews. You may not like that but there it is.
I'm really sorry that you can't read my post and/or comprehend it. I obviously said commercial success (BTW if you plan on highlighting what i say, you might want to read it first). I never stated that highly reviewed games aren't good games, I stated that highly reviewed games many times aren't commercial successes. Please try to fully read my posts next time you plan on criticizing me. 1UP, I believe, gave a unfavorable review to NeverWinter Nights 2 and a massive outcry prompted them to rereview the game and give it a high score. Now this proves that game sites can be wrong and even if 1UP had kept their review, the game would have been a success nevertheless. Also, you should probably read the other examples I gave. I also said that many games that were reviewed favourably were big comercial successes. There's a reason site (that you mentioned) have awards for best game never played during their yearly awards.
Honestly, did you just skim through my post looking for something to flame? I never said LotRO was a failure, I was simply stating a flaw in your claims that game reviews always determine a game's success.
Well Sorry for ruffling your feathers I did say "commercial success" also. I guess there could have been some highly rated games that were not commercial successes but I don't see how that has anything to do with LotR's so we both served off topic. It obvious that that is not the case with this game.
I wasn't aware that 1UP re-reviewed NWN2 either. You got a link for that? Just curious. 1UP isn't just a web site, whatever they publish there also goes into their magazine (games for windows) and I sub to it and never saw a re-review. Again just wondering if I missed something. Its highly unusual to see a re-review right after a review. In fact I don't think I ever saw it. (except for this site which has like zero review credibility with gamerankings)
Hes right though. Anyone who supports this game is supporting these rush our the door contentless games.
People used to complain about time sinks being in a game. Time sinks are things like grinding that just make you drone at your computer doing boring quests and such. Now people support a game like this which is entirely a time sink.
This game is trash (yes I played it) and if you honestly enjoy every minute of quest grinding you either have an extremly dull personality or are just that dumb. Games are suppose to be exciting and challenging. That is what they were first designed to be.

Classic troll flamebait, I know we shouldn't bother, but let's just pinch on the biggest mistakes in there...

However, saying that LOTRO is a korean grindfest only proves one thing: you have zero knowledge about the differences between eastern and western MMORPG's. 4. i left short after 5. returned when i got invited to the next phase of beta, there were updates but still it lacked content 6. it's an ugly game. even with everything turned up to lag inducing graphics mode, it's a hideous game IMO. the graphics are unstable on my setup, [note that wow graphics are completely tested on every possible setup known to man and are unflinchingly stable] - what can be said about this? Again, it's a matter of a personal taste, but the VERY LARGE majority of people like or even love LOTRO's graphic, even the harshest critics admit that graphically it is one of the most beautiful games currently. This point of yours is a distillated bottle of flamebait, and nothing else at all. 7. i reported everything - I don't understand. What did you report, to whom? 8. i left and came back for a final beta invite. the pre launch open beta. it was still boring, ugly, not immersive, not unique, not lordsy enough for me. Note when i posted that it was boring, or not immersive on the forumns everyone jumped on me and said how wonderful the game was. - I would not attack you for saying that LOTRO is boring, as getting bored is a totally personal thing. Some people get bored in theme parks, other people can have fun in an empty sandy beach. So that's not a reason to start a fight on! However, saying that LOTRO is ugly, is just plain BS and admits that you are only there for a fight. The only other option is that you're (at least) colorblind

We're open to discussion here, if that is what you'd like.... oh, I didn't think so either

Anyways not trying to start a flamefest. I'm actually looking to try the game, but I just don't like seeing people overhype this game and saying its the best MMO ever. Perhaps that wasn't your original intention, but whatever, GL with your games.
In the end, logic and reason always beat out fanboys.

To some people, it may be the best game ever. Most don't ike seeing opinions that disagree with thier own, but that's not "overhype". it's just thier opinion.
Even before this game was in beta almost everybody was convinced this game would wipe WoW and other existing MMO's from the market. Just look at the topics now... almost everybody finds the game boring and not fun to play in the end-game. But still the same people hype games like WAR and AoC like they did with this game. Is it so hard to learn a lesson? I keep laughing at every topic with "Game X will destroy game Y totaly!" or "This game will totaly own the whole market!". Sad part though, good games get beaten by this. Just stop posting hype topic about games yet to be launched!! You are only making a fool out of yourself!
I can only laugh looking at majority of topics on this forum - they're mostly bout flaming, hate spreading, fanboi war or ultra-dumb point-making, so... Get used to it and maybe try to stay with the minority, that helps a lot.

Opinions are subjected the the overal majority. For example, an individual opinion that we today consider wrong, or at least I hope most do, is the opinion of Hitler. Yes, he did have his own opinion, but that doesn't mean it is viewed as right. So, according to you, nothing is wrong because its just the person's opinion. Like I said, individual opinions are subjected to the opinion of the majority. Perhaps it wasn't overhype. For expample, lets say one person likes the taste of dirt ice cream and most everyone else hates it, but he tells eveyone who hasn't tasted it and everyone who has that its the best flavor in the world and everyone else are just "haters". Now wouldn't you say thats overhyping something?
For those people you say think this game is the best for them, most of them simply state it is the best game and everyone else is wrong. They don't mention that it is the best game for them and others may dislike it. That is called overhype. I simply dislike those who proclaim everyone else is wrong and that their game is the best. I would be fine if someone made an intelligent arguement as to why they enjoy the game and others like them may like it too. Instead, most overhypers simply state that their game beats all others.
In the end, logic and reason always beat out fanboys.
people said vanguard was going to be the next big mmo,and look what happened there... nothings going to come close to warcraft for a long time.
Yes, and Blizzrds makes some good money of it, but do you think they ever offer free content like Turbine does? NO! So why should we care obout how many people play it? C&C3 has way more sales than Supreme commander, still Supreme Commander is one of the best RTS games ever. Why doesn't everbody see it? because there are othere players who are so big that a casuel gamer can't look beyond it any more and see the good things of the others games. The very same thing aplies for Lotro
Not sure if someones already replied to this but DUDE blizz does give away free content in every patch like those little dungeons or whatever!

I wouldn't have commented on your post if you had added the "and everyone else is wrong" or "haters" parts to your comments. That I compleely agree with.
On the other hand, going by your examples, you're veiwing opinions as an overall right and wrong. All opinions are right to the person making them. It's not your place or mine to say whether they're right or wrong. As far as your example, Hitler's opinions where his own, there was no right or wrong, where he went wrong was acting on them....and no, the dirt ice cream lover wasn't "overhyping", he just wasn't being open to other's opinions.
Again, if people claim that there opinion is the only one that matters and everyone doesn't have a clue...flame away, I'll be your biggest supporter. But calling something "overhyped" is just putting the shoe on the other foot and making you the one with the superior opinion.
I stil believe opinions are subjective but you have your own opinion and I respect that. As for overhypers, I only call someone such if they clearly cross the line between making a sensible argument and bashing other games. That may be because humans are naturally biased towards their own opinions.

This game needs reall PvP and the evil side to be playable.
Monster PvP is a joke.
A prime example of my opinion is right and yours is wrong. This poster states his opinion of monster play as a fact. When it is just his opinion. To him it may be fact but to alot of others it is an opinion and they don't agree with it. I don't agree this game needs what he calls real PvP. IMO This game doesn't need tons of elite uber morons running around ganking everyone and then leet talking them to death cause they don't want to fight them. That is my opinion on that subject. I don't think his is wrong for him but for me it is. It may also be right for alot of other people but is wrong for just as many as it is right.
Meh ... Alright heres the deal. I had a chance to play LOTRO both during beta and a short while when it went live. While most of this is opinion I think ,as both a level designer and 3d modeler(organics and architecture), certain things in LOTRO's world design needs to be mentioned. I might add there are very few things on my list which in itself proves the game itself is solid. First is the old forest. This is an area I was really looking forward to seeing in this game. I was a little disappointed in the way it was setup however. It didn't really feel like a forest at all. It felt more like one of those carnival fun house mazes only with the partitions made of tree textures. You would think they could have put a little more detail in it and have it at least be a convincing forest. In this book this place was suppose to be full of ambiance. Another thing that irked me were the choppy animations. I'm sure this had to do with my computer settings however you would think that 2 gigs of ram, amd64 4200+ X2 processor with GeForce 8800Ultra GDDR3 PCI-E x16 HDCP video card would be sufficient enough to run the game smoothly... The game itself is beautiful, but it could have been so much more graphically stimulating if the texture artists played it smart and used smart texturing techniques rather than just randomly mapping certain models as it seems. The last thing that really got to me was Rivendell. When I finally got there and started walking down the hill I actually got a little bit excited...until I went into one of the buildings. I'm not sure why but it felt really..thin. I'm not even sure how to describe it but the buildings and props were not over the top in grandeur and splendor as you would expect Rivendell, of all things, to be. There should have been so much more ambiance added to this area to bring it to life. It just felt like another town to me, not magical at all. Granted these are all my opinions but I believe that these are really things they should consider revamping in the future, purely because of their historical importance in LOTR canon. People are gonna want above and beyond in just these few small little areas, even if the rest of the sprawl between them is somewhat lacking.
LOTR isn't a bad game at all, in fact it's very polished and fun. If you don't like it, don't play it. And if you're thinking about playing it, dont go by the reviews. Grab a buddy key or just buy it. And if you don't like the game, don't come onto the forums and spout how much the game sux. Just say that it wasn't the game for you, you got bored of it, etc and move on. Or give real reasons of why you didn't like it.
I don't play LOTR because I got bored, and I think it was because I have never read any of Tolkien's books. Just never got into them when I was younger. But I don't think LOTR is a bad game by any means, in fact it's probably the most bug free and polished release of a MMORPG I have ever played. No one likes when some random person just comes onto a forum and tells people that they are stupid for liking and having fun in a game.
I dont know about all of you, but the next time I really like a game I'm going to stay the HELL off of the forums for it.

Well i can tell you that they opened up the old forest alot. You used to be able to only enter it from three places. Now you can enter or exit it from more. Used to be only one way to get to old man willow now you can get there from another direction. They are making changes and improving the game off of player feedback. The players are saying what they like and dislike about the game and the devs are listening and making changes. The old forest no longer feels like a carnival maze. It is actually easy to get lost in there or run around and end up in a place you thought you weren't heading too.
Rivendell is bueatiful on ultra high settings. Plus rivendell is not a magical place. It is elven and the elves are not magical beings. Well not in lotr like they are in all other fantasy stories. The game is young and will change as it grows older and new areas are added. The dev team working on this game care about the lore and canon as much as we do. They show it in how they lisen to the players and how they stand by sticking to the lore. Yes they have bent it alittle here and there but have done nothing to break the lore. I can live with minor out of place details. As long as it never gets as bad as the movies. I loved the movies but i have a huge problem with it protraying aragorn as trying to run away from his heritage and glorfindel being totally deleted to be replaced by arwen who in the books said nothing and just sat there.
No game is for everyone, some people think WoW is the biggest blob of bird crap to ever land on the bald head of the man we call The Internet. WoW may have a HUGE playerbase, but has rampant goldfarming which cannot be put into check, thanks to the mass $1.99 trials released, making it simple to have mass spambots advertising their website, and it has the most immature playerbase of any game I know about.
I personally like Lotro, and I know in time it will grow and include much more content. Its true I don't have any level 40+ characters, but I'm in no hurry to hit level 50. I spend a fair amount of time toying with /music, doing pvmp (as a monster of course), and crafting. I personally think that people should stop viewing all mmo games in the same light as WoW and EQ2, because those are monstrous companies with a near unlimited budget, and a built in fanbase, unlike turbine.
If turbine could afford all the best designers, programmers, musicians, etc, etc, etc, sure, they could have made lotro into a game that could stand up to wow and spit in its eye, however, their budget was limited.
at least Turbine didnt go with the blander than stale bread "Warrior, Ranger, Cleric, Paladin, etc" Given there is little DIFFERENCE...
some may gripe about the lack of classes in the game, but, guess what? there are few BALANCING issues to work out! "Ooh, you need to balance out the cleric and druid, the Druid heals are too strong!" Glad I aint gotta put up with that. OF course wow only has, let's see.. "Warrior, Paladin, Shaman, Priest, Druid, Warlock, Mage, Hunter, Rogue" 9 classes total, most overlapping at least 2 other classes. Lotro has 6, none of them really overlapping much. In time Lotro will have more classes.
and the whole Morale deal? well in middle earth the dead do not come back to life, Well, there are undead, but those do not count. so, they had to figure out a way you can be defeated, but not killed. It was either that or toss the lore and add in healing magic, but that would have drawn a huge bad reaction.
They had to make a game, with lore intact as much as possible, and they pulled it off well. Tolkein enterprises takes their single product that they whore relentlessly VERY seriously. Much in the same way that Koei games whores the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (the action game is called Dynasty warriors for those who don't know)
Am I defending the game? well DUH! Am I a "fanboi"? Nope, if i didn't like the game I wouldn't be here. sure, as is it now, the game's story follows the fellowship of the ring, in time it will go well beyond the fellowship of the ring, and beyond the the whole story of the One Ring. Who knows?
I remember that WoW was nearly unplayable for a long time not long after launch because of server congestion. people quit in flocks, but came back later as more servers were piled on. As more content gets put into the game and different aspects of the game change, the game will hopefully improve, however not all "upgrades" are improvements, just look at SWG.
Also, Turbine can revamp classes at will, if the people become dissatisfied, much like the Paladin was revamped in WoW. This game ain't a failure, its actually doing quite well, perhaps not on the level of wow, but wow had a built in fanbase spanning 3 Warcraft games. The reason I got wow instead of eq2 was because I played the previous warcraft games and liked the storyline.
Before you start flaming me and calling me a fanboi just because I don't fap to wow every night before I go to bed, just shut up and go fap to wow on the wow forum. comparing every mmo to wow is like comparing every RPG to final fantasy, every fps to Halo, every Rts to Age of Empires, every racing game to Gran Turismo.
If you wanna get really into it, WAR WILL probably MURDER wow's pvp fanbase. DAOC2 would murder wow's pvp fanbase even harder. Wow's pvp is shallow, VERY shallow and unbalanced. WAR's pvp isn't gonna be the pinnacle of perfection, but it will most likely be more than deep enough to suck a good portion of life from wow.
There are no good hardcore pvp mmos out there with a decent playerbase, WAR will fix that, hopefully. DAOC had the problem with major barriers to entry, EVE online's system was a series of barriers to entry, and not many mmos have even really tried. EQ2's pvp was a worse than telling a racist joke in front of a crowd of that race, COH/V isn't a serious game, wasn't meant to be. Many people LOVE IT.
No game is for everyone, some like super hardcore, some like casual, some like very casual. Hardcore players aren't GONNA like a casual game, much as a casual player isnt GONNA like a hardcore game. a Hardcore gamer might like Battlefield 2, but isn't going to enjoy Soldier Front.

You do realize when you are invited to a beta its not a finished game. Your there to help not play a free game.
Your post has 0 merit and has failed.
You're what, brain dead or something or can't read. and you sum something up why don't you sum up all the points. Lastly if your'e going to be derogatory have some merit of your own.Let ME sum up what i said.
Go flame somewhere else.
It obvious that that is not the case with this game.I wasn't aware that 1UP re-reviewed NWN2 either.
Although I agree with you on a gaming / design level whats with all the hostility? You aren't going to get your point across to anyone by name calling. You just discredit yourself.
Classic troll flamebait, I know we shouldn't bother, but let's just pinch on the biggest mistakes in there...

Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.
Games are supposed to be FUN. If I'm playing and having fun, the game is successful.
Nobody could force me or any other gamer to play a game if it's not fun (let's not involve gold farmers).
More and more people are playing LOTRO, because it is fun for them - therefore, the game is a success. What's not to understand here?

He's still suffering from the immaturity disease of "I'm right you're all wrong", i.e.: not being able to differentiate between opinion and universal truth. It'll pass in 5-10 years time

I can only laugh looking at majority of topics on this forum - they're mostly bout flaming, hate spreading, fanboi war or ultra-dumb point-making, so... Get used to it and maybe try to stay with the minority, that helps a lot.

MMOs played-> UO: AoS, L2, GW, GW: F, HO, SoF, ToP
To some people, it may be the best game ever. Most don't ike seeing opinions that disagree with thier own, but that's not "overhype". it's just thier opinion.
In the end, logic and reason always beat out fanboys.
People are gonna want above and beyond in just these few small little areas, even if the rest of the sprawl between them is somewhat lacking.
gotta love 1 post wonder alts now don't ya. Thanks for making a account just to share your review LOL
I miss DAoC
