If you're a guy, do you give stuff to female characters that you wouldn't give to male characters? What about a female player? If you're a girl, do you find that you are treated differently if you play a male character as opposed to a female character? Do players treat you differently when they find out your female?
We have several female players in our guild and there are several males that play female characters. No one really much cares as far as I can tell, however there seems to be a lot of discussion about this topic, so I'm starting a poll.
Comments
Nope, It doesn't matter to me. I don't give free crap to people who beg anyways-Male or female. It only encourages them, and irritates me.
Nah, I hate them all equally,
I do prefer playing with women though, they don't go "uh uh I'm soo cool in my giant whatever" nor do they hit on Everything with a pulse.
As for hitting on women... Never in a game.. o.0 I'm there to NOT experience life..
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
this topic was covered extensively about a month back. there were a few interesting polls and a few good threads about it if i remember right.

It doesn't matter to me. I give cyber to any female toon wether it's a guy playing a female or a gal playing a female, it's all good, it's just a fantasy anyways.
Just fyi, female players don't ask for things, 12 year old boys that don't want to take the time to earn items/money themselves ask for things, while pretending to be girls.
Usually, I'm not treated very differently, besdies the occasional perverted emote, which I don't usually mind
Currently Playing : WAR, UO, RL
I have both female and male characters and when people make comments to my female characters I usually just go along with it and have some fun with it. It's pretty funny really. Most of the people I group with know me from Vent and know I'm a guy playing a female toon and will still say stuff like "that's a hot outfit" or something. From my experience most people seperate the Avatar from the player like you're saying. It's part of the fun. Most of the female players in our guild will even have a lot fun with it talking about breast size of their avatar and stuff. I'm pretty sure that's the norm, but was curious to what the poll would show.
its a video game.......
Games i'm playing right now...

Answering the poll question specifically and ignoring your text then of course Gender matters. Gender matters a lot in real life. In the game I could care less if the character is a guy/girl/ or the family dog. As long as they can play their class and do their role properly.
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
I tend to play both male and female characters. I dont care if people play their real life gender or not, i dont want to know, and i never ask. I always try to act neutral to both male and female players - im not interested in a online dating service, and i dont expect that from the people i meet ingame. When it comes to avatars/characters (not to be confused to the person behind them), i treat them as i think the person beind them want their avatar to be treated. Im usually generous, but no, im not that kind of person who start to give away everything i have just becasue i think its a girl irl who are going to fall in love with me.
It did, but not anymore since almost always it's a guy nowadays.
Gender doesnt really matter to me, after all what are you going to do if its a rl female, date her online? Some times female players can be annoying as hell online though because they are spoiled, and used to having a bunch of following monkeys behind them to help them whenever or give them free stuff, its the same as if you tried to talk with a hot girl who knows shes hot, she simply has her head up her ass and thinks shes the one and only one who matters. Some other females are pretty cool and very laid back and are interesting to chat with, and will listen to what you have to say and are usually more understanding than guys could be. However I automatically assume that all female toons are males because thats the way it is in MMOs. I have nothing against guys who play female characters, however my main always tends to be a male and some of my alts are female toons, its just about tastes.
One thing that bothers me in MMOs is when people ask the person if shes a rl female, and being that I was questing a few times in WoW with a rl friend of mine who happened to be a female she would tell them that shes a female because I dont know how you can lie about your gender, I certianly cant picture my self saying im a female when Im a male. They would torture her and ask her to cyber and repeatedly send her tells and ask her to group with them and shed tell me how frustrating it can get. Really people dont bother our female community they want to enjoy the game as much as we do, without being annoyed and bothered by immature pricks. If you do want a female and want to praise them and chat and flirt with them, trust me there are some who love that stuff, even though most of the time that can be guys seeking attention and thats just simply, CREEPY.
So really gender doesnt matter to me in MMOs I treat all people the way that I want to be treated, and help both genders the way that I'd want to be helped, but in RL you bet your ass gender matters.

Yeah, I like women.
I rather have everyone play cute sexy elves...
But that is me. I don't care to see a balding guy...or an aging woman. Just pick the l33t looking elf please! My eyes love them!

its not like your gonna get any from giving someone special treatment so why bother?
Depends. First of all, if I have some stuff I don't need, and I'm feeling nice, I'll give that stuff to the first Newb Char I meet, male or female.
When it comes to helping at some quest, or joining a Dungeon Group just because it's full then, while I won't gain anything from it... I'll more likely help a Girl than a Man. Mind you I didn't say Character. As I tend to know everyone I regulary help through TeamSpeak or Ventrilo anyway, I know what said Char represents in RL. And yes, I do help Females more often than males, though I generally help whenever I can. But you know, in situations where I have to sacrifice some achievement to help out someone, Females are more likely to persuade me.
I guess it's just because I'm an oldschool-Gentleman, if a Woman kindly asks for my help, I just can't say no.
Generally I find that Females are treated much better than Males, not so extreme when you only know the Character, but RL Females certainly got an easier Time in the Games I played. It seems that People can't become really angry against Females, they sort of can get away with almost everything. They apologize in a cute voice, giggle a bit, and everything seems to be fine again But well, I'm one of those Guys who can't get angry at a Girl, so I can't blame anyone
'nuff said.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
i said no cus alot of guys just play as girls to get that stuff...they try to hard to be girls by putting names like "BarbeeGirl1256" or sumtin.....or their just gay...well in a Shooter mmo calls "Gunz: The Duel" the girls r actually better at the skill butterfly cus they block differently and they r faster.....it all depends if ur n idiot or r desperate and cant a get a girl in real life so u try to hit on them in WoW...or if the company makes the girl char better and wants to make people play as girls....

If you give female avatars stuff for free than that is your problem, don't whine and bitch if it turns out to be a dude. Your fault. You shouldn't be sexist like that anyway. Its actually offensive to many female players. A lot of us just want to be treated like anyone else, we don't need you to baby us, we aren't infantile idiots.
What the hell did you expect to get in return from a female player anyway? A virtual lap dance? Come on.
I'm female in real life, and 80% of my toons are male. Why? Many reasons. Firstly, much like plenty of you dudes, I like the look of the opposite sex more than my own sex, and I like the way males look in warrior armor than females. Thats just my preference. But I also like to be treated normally, and not hit on or babied, because I like to earn what I get and feel as though I'm viewed as equal within an organization, like a guild.
Also, in video games, female apparel and avatar models tend to look silly; why the hell is my belly showing in PLATE MAIL, and why do I look like I'm a male fantasy? I can put up with a little bit of that kind of thing, but in some games its like ALL of the female armor is missing chunks to to show off skin, and all of the cool 'ugly', non-human races are gender-locked.
I tend to play physical/melee classes, and I think a larger character looks better in the armors and with the weapons equiped. I also roleplay sometimes, and I like to roleplay both men and women, and individuals of differen't fantasy races, because its fun to me. I'm not some big homophobe thats going to cry on a forum just because the dude I was getting flirty with was actually a chick in real life. Wtf, is an mmo a dating service anyway?
In summation, I like playing as differen't races AND different genders, to get the whole experience. If you want to stick solely to your race [human] and your gender, than thats your choice and you're welcome to it. But don't be a jerk and expect everyone else to do things how you do them. Some people play games to be differen't than they are in real life, not just to make an online version of their real life selves.
Oh please. Gender matters. It always has and always will. People might genuinely think they're not influenced by gender, but most people are.

Who cares? Gender doesn't determine the person behind the gender if that makes sense. Just because I'm a guy doesn't mean I'm not a rational player, and a being a woman doesn't automatically qualify you as rational either. The point is that many people like to stereotype which is plain dumb.
I think stereotyping is okay, and understandable before you know a person better. Most stereotypes exist for a reason. Discriminating is not okay, though. Give everyone a chance to prove themselves, regardless. But be smart and know who you're playing with.
I'll give you a stereotype about us men (particularly young men): They play a lot nicer (and act more mature) when they know there's a woman present!
