World of Warcraft falls to $9.99 at Target Retail, Asherons Call now beats up WoW 8.2 to 8.1

radlinradlin Member Posts: 266

8.2 overall rating vs 8.1 overall rating.  I'm speaking ofcourse about Asherons Call's ratings on this site vs that of World of Warcraft.  Now a difference of .1 isn't much you say.  But it is actually quite an achievement for the old timer Asherons Call.  World of Warcraft is barely 2 and half years old.  Asheron's Call is now almost 8 years old.  World of Warcraft represents the king of the money in the mmo market today, but is obviously not the king of the highest ratings by mmo players.

Perhaps then, that is why World of Warcraft now has a retail pricetag of only $9.99 in several nationwide retail outlets, the latest being the huge chain of Target stores dropping its retail price to try and help move the WoW inventory.

The players have spoken.  Not in sales, but in ratings.  Asherons Call has held very high ratings on almost every website since it's release in the fall of 1999.  World of Warcraft is already starting to fall.  Asherons Call boosts so many veteran players stating such statements as "Best mmo I've ever played", while so very many Wow players say quite the opposite and that it is very simple and repetitive, and slam it with "boring" remarks.  Look at a few of the ratings reviews of both games.  Just take a quick look.  Look how quickly you'll notice many "best game ever" type of statements for Asherons Call... and how quickly you see a ton of "boring" remarks in the World of Warcraft reviews.  These are players like you and I people.  Players.  And the players have spoken.

Mass market appeal is great for the big bucks, but really bad for the real players who want real substance in their online game experience.

You obviously didn't even take a QUICK look as I suggested.  Again, take a quick look at ASHERONS CALL... then the RATINGS tab.  I know this is extremely difficult for a WoW player bud.. but come on.. I know you can do it.  I know you can.  I know you can...

Now take a look at one of the many, many reviews that have a statement such as "best game I ever played" or "Best mmo ever".  NOW TAKE A LOOK AT THE DATE.  You find tons of such statements within the past 6 months.  ...That is NOT 8 years ago.  And that is NOT apples to oranges.  That is reviews of two mmorpgs on the SAME website with exactly equal opportunity.  STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR YOUR BELOVED WOW.   It's getting slapped down fair and square by a game THREE TIMES ITS AGE.  WITH THREE TIMES MORE DATED GRAPHICS AND AN 8 YEAR OLD ENGINE vs a much newer engine that has 10 times the computer spec requirements.

It's mmo -vs- mmo.  Ratings on the same website.  That's hardly apples to oranges.  If any game has the huge disadvantage, it is AC, not WoW.  And WoW is still getting beat down.  Accept it.

And why do you care so much? We all know this, stop beating a dead horse, and try to stop sounding like you're a genius. We all know that the content in both games differ dramatically.

Yes, it is almost like comparing apples and oranges.

And why are you so angry at such statements?  We all know that WoW fans get so angry at anything negative pointed out against their game, oh and try to stop sounding like such a whiner.  We obviously don't all know yet how different these two games are.  There are many recent mmo players who never had the luxury of playing a REAL mmo with something called substance and only have craptacular simple minded and boring mmos to play like WoW since they became a member of the mmo community.

No, is not at all like comparing apples to oranges.  Both are mmorpgs.  And both are up and running and available for play today.

ok for 1 i dont take the ratings from here anyways, because it depends on how many people have rated the game's. For the 2nd i think there was only EQ1 and UO out when Asharons Call was released. How many more mmo's have been released since then and which is taking most of  the player's to it.

Me i am neither defending WoW as i have not played that for (getting on now) close to a year. I have never played AC though. I am not judging, i am simply stating teh fact that the ratings arnt worth peanuts and back then AC was relased with not many other online contenders.

And im sure theres a big difference regarding the amount of votes on the 2..

Personally, i voted on wow as mediocre, but never even thought about rating Asherons Call. Easy to get high ratings with few votes ;)

Yep just because more people are familiar with McDonalds MUST mean that it has better food then a local 5 star mom and pop steak house in a single small town.  Your attempt to look smart by simply stating that popular = greatness only shows your foolishness.  The masses obviously aren't ever smart... or the masses never would have voted in GW Bush not once, but TWICE now.

Dropping to $9.99 means nothing more than, they have the clout to 'push' all that retail stock into the hands of consumers who are willing to pay the REAL money they are after.

    the monthly.

a drop of a few bucks on a CD that alrerady has its obligations and marketing/advertising money paid for many times over...as opposed to several months of keeping someone logged in paying a monthly until they get bored( prognosticated time usually:8months)...hmm..lets weigh this out realistically.

50bucks for the game. smaller number of people coming ingame to pay the monthly.

10 bucks for the game, much much larger (possible) number of people thinking.."WOW what a deal!"...coming ingame to pay a monthly.

hmmm.....at this stage in the game...as you stated, 2 + years after release, when most games slow down in two years anyway,  as we ALL know to well.....sounds like they actually havce people working in marketing.......Working!

Looks like a very shrewd and SMART businesss endeavor.

I'll bet they make alot of subs off this.....b/c we all know very well , its not the sale of the CD that matters much at all....

its the GODLY monthly they want/need....

    period.

btw.....i hate wow. lol....but they have smart marketing 'dudes' that seem to know the market from past experience going back to the mid 90's

    kudos to them.

Good point, but keep in mind that Asherons Call had already been around for 3 or 4 years before THIS website even started.  This website was born only about a year or two before World of Warcraft saw light.  So it's not like this website was sitting around for 5 years getting high remarks for AC before WoW was even a competitor.

Rather this website saw tons and tons of WoW fanboys love the prettier graphics for WoW and rate it really really high and rate old school games like AC really low, even if they never even played it.  Tons of WoW players doing this vs maybe a few AC players doing the contrary.  (Look at the number of players for each game).

Again, there is NO excuse for WOW losing to AC... NONE.  ..Except that it is a bigtime inferior game to AC and the old EQ and UO.  Graphics don't make it great.  And neither do tons of kiddie players.

    WoW has no excuses.

your right.  it just means that World of Warcraft is more widely played by the population and more widely known than Asherons Call.  It doesnt mean that myself, or you like it better.. it just means more people know about it and play it.

people make analogies when the person theyre talking to doesnt completely understand the subject they are talking about.  They  try and persuade another persons opinion by making irelevant comparisons to something that makes their opinion agreeable.   Such as your McDonalds/Bush statement.  It has nothing to do with the subject but it attempts to make me say "ya know..hes right!" on a totally irrelevant topic other than the one we're discussing.

I like EQ more then WoW but i really dont think i need to make an entire post about it. Would you like to know why? Its because its a personal preference. 8.5 plus people think WoW is a great game and play it, thank god they all dont decide to post.

If only i could find a troll with a tin foil hat. =(

I don't really have a huge opinion but I must ask why are you so angry? Seriously calm down they are games..... And just a side note WoW has millions of players so w/e the rating is it still crushes its opponents and in the end thats all that matters isn't it? The majority of people like WoW that play MMORPG's its a simple fact.

BTW I hate WoW with a burning passion but I ain't stupid and I ain't ignorant, people like WoW otherwise blizzard wouldn't be rich as hell right now.

Oh really?  Those numbers of posts are ALL that matters huh?

The AVERAGE RATING means nothing at all you say?

Surely not.  Surely you want to re-think this.

As you would point out, if a new mmo came out called CRAPOLA and was a really, really crappy game and it got an average rating on this site of a 1.6 but had 701,000 votes, well then the 701,000 votes blows WOWs 7,935 votes to pieces...so it must be a million times better game then WOW because of the number of votes.  The crappiness of the game NOR the AVG 1.5 rating means nothing.  Only the number of votes.

My gawd, how could I have been so stupid and overlooked such a brillaint obversvation?  ONLY THE NUMBER OF VOTES MATTER IN A GAMES QUALITY.  REVIEWS AND AVG SCORES MEAN SQUAT.  You are such a genius.

    ROTFLMFAO.

    GBTW.

There selling the game for 20 and the expansion for 40, so new players = 60 more than what they orignally made from the first coppies. Its natural for games to drop their price when they have expansions because what new player wants to shell out 80- 100 dollars to play a game? just a side note lol

the post number do have a significant value to the ratings. Guild Wars: Factions only has 797 total votes with a rating of 8.3.

What it means is while only about 600 of those people need to vote a perfect 10 in order to get the 8+ rating while WoW needs over 6,000 votes with a perfect 10 to get 8+ rating. not every one will say "hey im a fan of that game! im going to rate every thing 9 or 10 even the customer service even tho i waited over 3 hours to get a response."

If we were to see how good a game realy is in this world, let the subscription per person speak for its self. but on a more personal rating, a games worth is different for each person. this topic has got to be the most idiotic of all saying "the game i like is better then the most popular game in the world b/c less people vote for it on mmorpg.com but more of those people vote higher scores! WOOT! in your face!"

If AC rocks so hard, then why are you hanging out here instead of playing?

    But seriously...

Whatever happened to the days when we just played the games to have fun?  I remember talking with friends in high school about how I went to the arcade and played some Altered Beast.  And they never interrupted me with "Psh, you play Altered Beast, you're such a noob (of course, the term wasn't around yet), Metal Slug is where it's at!"  What happened to this community of gamers?

Just shut up and play your game, and be happy the games you enjoy are available for you to play and continue supporting them.

    Currently Playing: Nothing...I'm developing.
    Looking Forward To:
