In regards to the price drop, ofc they lowered the price of the "orginal" WoW but the "expansion" is still full price... its to encourage new players to buy the expansion along with the game... simple marketing nothing else. And MMORPG ratings mean nothing, its driven by fan boys and haters.
It still never ceases to amaze me how people will line up to bash someone for saying something bad about a lame game like WOW, yes blizzard "claims" to have over 8 million subscribers, and we all know thats BS, thay have had 8 million+ subscribe at one time or another total , wich includes 14 day free trials ( that counts for almost 3 million of these 8) endless amounts of friends try for free accounts, and tons that used the 30 days and never played again,so when you brag about your "Almighty' game please know the complete facts before you boast" its the best" because its not and never will be .........................................Yeah fan boys and girls flame away , and yes i was once a WOW player but got bored of the Simplicity of it , as for AC , it was a great game in its time but when the player base dwindled to less than 500 on at any 1 time it lost its greatness, wich revolved around its PvP.
RESEARCH.. lol telling ppl to research when you dont... trial accounts and expired accounts are NOT counted.
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. the only way to 'tell' anything...as if it really matters anyway at all. is......to find out what was the TOTAL subscriptions that AC had Waaaaay back then when it was released......then what is the number of the Subs that existed 2 years after its release?
same with WoW...what was the total number at the beginning(realistically speaking...not including cafes and multiple botters) and then what was the number of subs at the 2 year mark?
take both figures and figure out the percentages from there. you cant compare them any other way...period.
if AC had the marketing push that wow had....i dont think it would even be a question. Blizzard distributed heavily...while mostly 90% of all morpg's are that ever existed other than WoW, have had a very very extremely humble distribution.
its simple...bigger numbers means nothing if the distribtution varies so widely between companies.
if one game sells 80 million copies across the world...then only retain 5 million after 2 years. and another game that noone has basically heard of or could NEVER find in the stores in only 1 or 2 countries had 50,000k upon release then ended up with 2k after 8 years!
I would say..WoW is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to morpgs. just becuas the numbers are bigger doesnt mean much of anything. if they lost 80% of their players in only two years ...yet ALL..i mean A-L-L the other morpgs are still pumping away after 5-8years with a higher percentage...respectively speaking.
i only wonder where Eq1 and UO would be right now..if they had and utilized the same WORLD WIDE sales that blizzard did, upon release.
i think we all know the answer.

8.2 overall rating vs 8.1 overall rating. I'm speaking ofcourse about Asherons Call's ratings on this site vs that of World of Warcraft. Now a difference of .1 isn't much you say. But it is actually quite an achievement for the old timer Asherons Call. World of Warcraft is barely 2 and half years old. Asheron's Call is now almost 8 years old. World of Warcraft represents the king of the money in the mmo market today, but is obviously not the king of the highest ratings by mmo players. Perhaps then, that is why World of Warcraft now has a retail pricetag of only $9.99 in several nationwide retail outlets, the latest being the huge chain of Target stores dropping its retail price to try and help move the WoW inventory. The players have spoken. Not in sales, but in ratings. Asherons Call has held very high ratings on almost every website since it's release in the fall of 1999. World of Warcraft is already starting to fall. Asherons Call boosts so many veteran players stating such statements as "Best mmo I've ever played", while so very many Wow players say quite the opposite and that it is very simple and repetitive, and slam it with "boring" remarks. Look at a few of the ratings reviews of both games. Just take a quick look. Look how quickly you'll notice many "best game ever" type of statements for Asherons Call... and how quickly you see a ton of "boring" remarks in the World of Warcraft reviews. These are players like you and I people. Players. And the players have spoken. I'd like to know how you figure bigger numbers means nothing? I just refuse to believe 8 million (At one time or another) people are playing the worst game around. They may not be playing your cup of tea, cause they're sure not playing mine, but I don't think you can really say that numbers that big doesn't mean anything and the game sucks. Oh and just because the price and rating on this site drops, it's hardly anything to dance about. Yeah math is really easy. WOW has grown from 1 million maybe less at start to 8 million now. take out botters , farmers, or whatever else you want to take out and it has grown almost 800%. Pretty sure this is the peak, numbers will go down for sure over the next few years by alot I expect. But by your own formula they will still probably be at 400% more customers than they started with at release. So by your forumla they would be the best game ever?
Im not saying its the best gam ever, but your own little way to judge games would make it so. Probably time for you to come up with another way to judge these games .

That's really all I am trying to point out people. Let's not get in some HUGE debate on AC vs WoW. Especially since most of you who will be posting remarks will have never even played Asherons Call for 5 minutes.
Just look at that simple point. Look at how great or popular or whatever you think WOW is. And Asherons Call, a game released way back in 1999 is actually beating it's average rating. Look at what that says for a game like Asherons Call, regardless of what you think about WoW. Stop attacking me and Asherons Call for just a second and give Turbine and Asheron's Call a bow of respect for even the .1 higher rating it has over the much more recent and much higher polished game of World of Warcraft.
Give a little respect where respect is due. I honestly think Asherons Call deserves it. And so does Turbine. Turbine deserves it for keeping it going, for keeping it interesting to its devoted players for so many years against such fierce competition.

But you suggested that World of Warcraft may not be the greatest game ever made in the history of the Universe Some people just can't handle that kind of thing.
1: World of Warcraft has been on the shelves for over 2 years and is still selling a lot of copies. Very few mmorpgs can claim this achievement and Asherons Call is not one of them.
2: The ratings on this website means absolutely nothing at all. it is way off both in terms of quality and population, mmorpg.com ratings is NOT a good representive of the mmorpg genre.
I mean come on...City of Heroes better then World of Warcraft? Lets stay realistic. Its a good game, but its lower quality then WoW. Everquest 2 better then Guild Wars? Please.
World of Warcraft received a ton of awards, extremely high scores of critics and is BY FAR the most popular MMORPG in the world. In fact, World of Warcraft alone holds up for more then 50% of the mmorpg subscriber market. And you know what, There probably is a good REASON for that.
The "best" or "worst" MMORPG is entirely opinion based. And since everyones' opinion is equal (regardless of what some people believe), it turns "best" and "worst" into a numbers game. Anytime you turn anything in MMORPG industry into a numbers game, WoW wins.
As much as I hate it, people vote with their pocket book. If you want to find the product people liked the best, "follow the money."
"Those who dislike things based only on the fact that they are popular are just as shallow and superficial as those who only like them for the same reason."
In its peak, AC reportedly had 125k subscribers, but now has ~10k. I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to the quality of the gaming experience in AC.
AC was a far better MMO. It may of had only 125k at peak but it was released at a much different time then WOW. Not to mention it required skilled and some brains to play.

In its peak, AC reportedly had 125k subscribers, but now has ~10k. I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to the quality of the gaming experience in AC.
AC was released 8 years ago and was one of the first 2nd gen MMO on the market after EQ. You can't EVEN REMOTLY try to compare AC to WOW.
Yes, the.. About 300 players that are online on mmorpg.com obviously prove that AC is better than WoW, because those 8 MILLION WoW players (Or fewer, say 2million for the fun of it) have NOTHING to put up against the leet 300-non-spartan-geeks here...
How about that now............
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW... It all sucked.
This is pointless as this site uses an average on the numbers. That means that all the Asheron's Call players all like Asheron's Call more than the players of WoW like WoW.
ow... I am not sure... But I am willing to bet based on the dact that WoW has more players it stands to argue that WoW has more positive reviews than Asheron's Call. However as it is averaged the amount of reviews doesn't make a difference.
Also WoW will be getting alot of 0/10 ratings from people who have a grudge against it.
Ratings mean absolutly nothing. LOOK up at the top right hand corner of the webpage at MMORPG.com.... you will see total members at roughly 600k people. (An extreemly inaccurate number - multi accounts, dead accounts, tons of non-activly visiting people, are all counted). You will see total ONLINE at PRESENT time hovering around roughly 1k to 2k people. (This is actual humber of people.) It can be said there is a solid 50k to 100k actually active members at mmorpg.com (counting guests/lurkers and activly posting members.). So you are defining the popularity of WoW vs AC based on a skewed poll. A grossly skewed poll. If just 1/8th of WoW's total players visited this site, and voted for their Blizzard game, guess what ratings WoW would have? Just 5 WoW servers = total number of players in AC. Perhaps then, that is why World of Warcraft now has a retail pricetag of only $9.99 in several nationwide retail outlets, the latest being the huge chain of Target stores dropping its retail price to try and help move the WoW inventory. Incorrect. Go to a computer store (CompUSA, Staples, GameSpot/GameStop, SoftwareCity) and then look at how much WoW is selling for, how much AC is selling for. Target is a corporate chain store, just like Wal-Mart. Target buys items in extreem bulk rate to take advantage of their insane floorspace. They can undercut any pricing by smaller stores. They work their inventory simular to the growing "99 cent" stores that flourish in L.A., Miami, and a few parts of NYC. Did you know there are many, many, towns in America that refuse to allow a Target, a Wal-Mart to open? Now what does that say about your beloved Target store? The players have spoken. Not in sales, but in ratings. Incorrect. MMORPG players have spoken at this one site called mmorpg.com. BUT Blizzard players have not spoken at all at this site mmorpg.com. BTW, players have spoken in sales - AC is still around because enough players have spoken with their wallets. No matter how high AC's votes may be, it ALWAYS comes down to the bottom line, if a mmorpg has re-couped its investment money, if it is able to turn a true profit. Asherons Call has held very high ratings on almost every website since it's release in the fall of 1999. Sigh, the first years of its release, there were only 3 major mmorpgs out! LOL! Factor in 3-D modernism, then it was only TWO major mmorpgs out!!! EQ, and AC. (The Asian mmorpgs like Lin1 had problems making a serious splash in Europe and America.) BTW, back in that time period Blizzard's online prescense nuked the number of players AC had. Blizzard had even higher ".... ratings on almost every website" during the time AC released. Blizzard's online fans were ignored by the mmorpg industry. Blizzard in return ignored mmorpg fans. The two online player bases existed seperately. World of Warcraft is already starting to fall. Please post your sources, and proof. You have created yet another thread about WoW "is dead", "is dying", "... is already starting to fall". If you cannot post proof that WoW currently has less than 8 million players, then you are now spreading false information. Review all my posts in the former AC2 forums and see how rutheless I am about spreading false information. (click on my bio, click on my posts, go to the earliest ones, and have fun reading me ripping up posters who kept spreading false info about AC2, and cSWG) Asherons Call boosts so many veteran players stating such statements as "Best mmo I've ever played", while so very many Wow players say quite the opposite and that it is very simple and repetitive, and slam it with "boring" remarks. You are the best proof at the inaccuratcy of your own statement. You said AC is years old. You said WoW is a few years old. Obviously the game that is far older will ".... boost SO MANY veteran players stating such statements". Refer to my first reply.... Mass market appeal is great for the big bucks, but really bad for the real players who want real substance in their online game experience.
1. This is where you, and the majority of posters at this here site MMORPG.com keep messing up, LOL! The majority of Blizzard players are NOT your definition of "real players who want real substance in their online game experience" aka mmorpg players. The majority of Blizzard players are NOT mmorpg players, they are Battlenet players. WoW was marketed NOT to the masses, WoW was directly marketed towards the 20+ million Battlenet players. Can you now understand how easy it was for WoW to hit 8 million players?
2. It can be said WoW players, aka Blizzard fans, aka Battlenet players, are far, far, more REAL players than "sissy" mmorpg veterans, and "sissy" mmorpg players. I dare you, dare you, to go on Battlenet, login to Diablo 2, and play HARDCORE MODE. You will come running back to this site in tears, screaming, and crying for weeks uncontrollably. Believe it or not, hundreds, thousands, millions, of Battlenet players have successfully played Hardcore Mode, making it up to level 99, without EVER dying a single time! You die just 1 time, 1 time, and that is IT! Lost of ALL your uber gear, lost of ALL your leveling up, stats, skills, lost of everything! And Battlenet players play over the same unpredictable internet connection you do, and everyone else does.
3. Blizzard fans are NOT the same as mmorpg fans. That is all there is to it. Only 1 mmorpg came close to paying attention to the millions of Blizzard fans - cSWG when they were going to have a Hardcore Mode in their mmorpg. Their game DEVs even posted about how incredible Blizzard did in implimenting this feature. So at sites like mmorpg.com it means nothing to see any mmorpg get whatever ratings vs. WoW. Because the majority of Blizzard fans do not, and will not, will never, visit sites like mmorpg.com.... they only visit Battlenet and that is it.
BTW I personally like AC1 better than WoW. And yes, I and many players are fans of BOTH games. AC1 is better than just about all the other mmorpgs too. IMHO because of it's far superior player community.
Asheron's Call is one of the first mmo's that I have played way back in 1999/2000 era while the game world is great and the storyline and ingame lore is terrific the game is aging. Perhaps if Turbine upgrade the graphics engine to modern mmo standard then it will be a great game all over again.
Comments

I am not comparing AC to WoW. I am simply showing that AC has lost over 90% of its player base. That speaks volumes.
Perception is Reality.

Let's see how WOW is going in 2012 (8 years after launch).
