I've been out of MMORPGs for awhile and I'd like to come back. The reason I left was because there was nobody who could really ROLE PLAY! I had one good group of friends but over time they eventually disappeared.
What I'm looking for is a fairly good 3-D MMORPG that has more people trying to have fun with Role Playing than seeing how fast they can Level-Up. Mainly I'm looking for people who play like this too.
I can tell you all this, I've had more fun Role Playing the Temple Librarian, talking, debating, and negotiating than spending all my time killing monsters, other players, and Leveling Up.
And while your at it tell me what is more fun in MMORPGs?

roleplaying can be fun, you didnt put crafting on the poll so i didnt vote.
Roleplaying for me.But I had a thread a while ago in which i stated roleplayers are a dying breed.
If you look at everquest in 1999 almost all the players then roleplayed at least to a certain degree with a majority always roleplaying. This as of 2001 was almost dead.
Games like SWG were build for roleplaying. It has all you need to roleplay and to be fair initally a lot of people did.But they quickly became disiluioned and left.
Bottom line is no matter how RPing friendly the game is the community is the one that kills it off.And yet to meet a game that this did not happen to.
You know what Drumgor, i never really thought about that, but its true. In WWIIOnline you are pretty much forced to role-play. If you don't, you wont survive too well in the battlefield haha.

-Sniper22 - WWII Online (semi-retired)

Real role-players? Like in NWN? In a MMORPG? I am starting to believe there is no such thing. There are those that would rather RP but are promptly laughed at, cursed at, et cetera. I hear Underlight, and it's sequel Reclamation, feature and encourage actual role-playing.
MMORPG -- Where's the RP?
You have my full respect and support coz Role-playin is what i like most at online games.. Rammur is right.. the best role playing is in older games, where the communities are mostly real RPG players.. For example i played good old UO on a RPG only server and I never had more fun on any other server than on this. Makes you feel more part of the world. And that is what i like
While not a MMO, I've been playing Neverwinter Nights for the past two years. I play on RP servers where we enforce strict IC RP. To get those kind of people into a deserving MMO will be no easy task.

MMORPG -- Where's the RP?
I'm searching for one myself Dusty, and as of yet, I have not found my holy grail or anything close for that matter. I'm hoping with the release of some of the mmorpgs this year and early next that the RP will be put back into mmorpg. At the very least, I hope that I can find a good RP server. EQ2, D&L, Wish and even SoR have good potential. Almost forgot, MEO also has very good potential for RP. I'll PM you if I find one, and please return the favor if you do.

StarCloud, I have been playing mmorpgs for a long time now, since Ultima Online, and I've played almost every one since. I can agree with you that there are few real roleplayers around, but lately, I have seen more. In Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot, when I first began playing, both games, I noticed some roleplayers. Then as the game went along, they became less and less. I recently returned to DAoC and was pleased to find a good amount of roleplayers on Guinevere, Percival, and Nimue servers.
In Star Wars Galaxies, there is a very good roleplaying community on the Kettemoor server. These are the players who really love to roleplay, I can tell from being around for a while and with the lack of content in SWG, these players still love the game because they roleplay and make their own content and RP events.
Currently, I am playing City of Heroes. I heard before I got the game that there were roleplayers, but I haven't really seen them. Maybe it's because the game has many instanced zones where you are isolated from other players. I find myself with a small, select group of players most often and cannot really tell if there is a lot of roleplaying going on in CoH.
I play Lineage II. There is no roleplaying going on at all. Sorry, none. But this is what I expected. I bought Lineage II to experience the PvP, Castle Sieges, and Clan Wars. I think there are some roleplayers out there in L2, I read on the Forums that there are RP Clans, but I haven't seen them in-game.
Finally, what is to come in the near future, with World of Warcraft, Everquest II, Dragon Empires, Dark and Light, The Matrix Online, etc. I can only hope that these games will encourage real roleplaying and get away from level grinding, camping, and power-gaming. My personal opinion is that Everquest II will have the most opportunity and be very friendly towards roleplayers (I think this because of the excellent job SOE has done with the RP opportunities in SWG). I think Blizzard's World of Warcraft will have very little, if any roleplaying, similar to Lineage II. But that's just my opinion formed from looking at game mechanics, the structure and features of the game and it's environment, and most important the player community.
I hope you find a great mmorpg with lots of roleplaying. I am still looking for it myself.

The "RP" in MMORPG was evicted like an unpopular roomate that alphabetizes everyone's socks by brand.
The reason being that RP'ers don't care about how good Counterstrike rejects do in a game and this bothers the Counterstrikers so they feel it's important that everyone knows they're uber, so they annoy the RPer's as often as possible. So the cycle goes like this:
CSer: "I R Teh Ubar L33t!!!! B0w B 4 me or pheel my wrath!!!!!!!!!111one"
RPer: "I see.... by the gods I've never seen such an idiot."
CSer: "U R just jelious because I R Better then j000, pwwwwwnnnneed."
RPer: "I don't think so CSer. I think I'll just go over here now and leave you be."
CSer: "That's right, run away like a little rabbit. I R ubar so your reaction is typical. I'm soooo ubar and better then U!!!"
RPer: "I'm just going to pretend I didn't hear the drivel you just spewed."
CSer: "Haha, u r just mad because I'm so good. I'm sorry, but ur mommy can't help you."
RPer: "Okay, this is rediculas. I'm leaving." *RPer quites game to not have to be around this annoying person.*
CSer: "Bahaha, that fagg0t left because he couldn't stand how ubar I am, lololololololol!!!"
CSer2: "OMFG, he was so PWND. ahaahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahlolololololololollllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!one!!!!"
And the cycle continues.
Well it's a catch-22 for companys. Most of them, when pressed for a 'Role Play' server, will reply that it's a role playing game and so therefore all servers are RP. They do this, in my opinion, because there is no real way to enforce role playing. Ask ten different players what constitutes 'Role Play' and you'll most likely get 10 different answers. Which of those people do you then disipline when they fail to live up that standard? And how would you even go about enforcing it? Spot checking is about the best that could be hoped for without steeply raising the subscription rate to support a GM for every zone.
So a company isn't going to position itself in an unwinnable situation. SOE has the right idea in making Firionia Vie a role playing preferred server. I would like to see all MMORPGs do the same. It seems like with every game, right before launch, there is a mad dash by the player base to designate one server as the 'RP' server. If the company would just do this for them it would make things much smoother on launch day, and result in less hard feelings from the customer base.
Personally I think RP is an integral part of online games. But I think that mindset is a minority, however sizeable.

The best "roleplaying" game is the little known Underlight. However, in order to enjoy the game, you would truely have to be playing for the RPG ... because the graphics and other technical aspects of the game are as old as Meridian59. Although, they recently announced Reclamantion which "promises" to be a "next-gen" Underlight (so to speak).
So, if you TRUELY want RPG, try Underlight. If you really want a MODERN game with some RPG thrown in, do NOT try Underlight.

I really love actual Roleplaying.. the very essense of Taking on a new identity seems almost heaven to me. The closest thing i've come to Real Roleplaying.. was believe it or not... NeverWinter Nights both off and online.. the Single player mode to me is very immersive (that's if you actually make the effort by reading the in-game books and talking to the mercinaries.. and so forth) The Online play.. i'm very picky because some servers people just make them to show off their uber characters or items.. but some of them have genuin Roleplaying.
The server i'm on now I started playing as a female character just to test out the server and now I'm hooked, but I keep myself from getting TOO into the Roleplaying..(I dont want to turn gay from playing a female character) but the world is just not big enough.. that's the problem.
The only other game that i was TOTALLy immersed in besides Daggerfall and Morrowind (thats a whole other story) was Knights of the Old Republic also single player but that game had me believing that I was really the main character. With all the conversation between characters and crap. To the point where I refered to Methaen (lvl 10 Jedi, lvl 10 Ranger) as I; and Donovan Smith (FSU Junior, Earth) as him.
.......hmm did i get a lil bit off topic?...
Well... yeah if you want a good game for RP'ing get NwN..

i found deus ex. invisible war, way better than KOTOR, and although not online you still get the small feeling of rp. you can do almost anything to a certain extent, its just its not online, and if it was, it'd suck.... but if u do got xbox, and want some rping, go buy this game.... used though.... i;ve seen it for $10,. and for the fact of why rping died, i have to say its all those kids that are out there so they can become the best at every game they play. if you ask me, if you want to be the best go play sports OUTSIDE!!! hmm.... has anybody commented on the graphics out there, i mean they are awsome but every geek is too busy playing (bleep) halo!!! go away so rpers can rp... I voted role-play. and its not that tough, it just takes a game that will put its freakin pants on, and not think money.
1) Create a RP server
2) Monitor it
3) Ban everyone who doesn't RP.
Non-RP'ers can just play on anyone of the 19th other server. Is it really too much to ask to have 1 server dedicated to RP in a RP game......
Those company makes no sense...
