The general problem I have with most roleplayers is that they insist that "their way" is the only way to roleplay. In truth, there is no single way to roleplay...and when you mix yourself with thousands of other players you are bound to encounter vast differences in a roleplay approach.
If you want to roleplay, roleplay...nobody is stopping you from doing so. If you insist that everyone else adhere to your own roleplay dogma then you had best create your own game and only involve yourself with players who share your viewpoint.
WOW! I had no idea that my post would have this much of an impact! I made this post 2 weeks ago and I completely forgot about it and now that i came back to check on it, what can I say. But I have noticed one thing. The other people who voted on my poll who picked Power Leveling and such never really replied to throw in their two cents on the issue. I'm not saying their cowards or fools, because they are UBER remember, but that they have nothing to say on their side against us.
True Roleplaying has been left out in the dark to wither away at the knees of Ultimate Character Perfection stats wise. Who wants to Roleplay the quest to save the princess from the Dragon when one of your Party members is SO strong he can slay the Dragon just by staring at it? Actual Roleplaying needs to return to the realm of MMORPGs and regain it's significance as the RP in MMORPG!

Does anyone know if any of the servers for City of Heroes leans more towards RP? I've been playing on Justice, Victory and Freedom servers, but not really seen any.
BTW: Justice seems to have the most immature community. It's really annoying to see male avatars with stupid names hitting on female avatars...
Roleplaying is definitely something often forgotten. I've played a few MMORPGs and actually had a fair amount of fun just roleplaying on my own, but it's way more fun when you do it as a community. A lot of inspiration from MMORPGs has come from PnP roleplaying, but really the true spirit of PnP hasn't yet been captured in most environments. Right now most of the big name games are based around max/min levelling. The social roleplaying experience has been relatively ignored against the statistical aspects of creating a character. This really does lead to a repetitive game after awhile and it doesn't give you the real opportunity to get into your character, interact with your character and participate in a dynamic and challenging environment. Levelling your character and tangibly advancing him/her is really only half of the game, the rest is in the story and losing yourself in the role.
I think someone already mentioned it but if you're looking for a MMORPG with roleplaying and don't mind outdated graphics, by all means check out our game Underlight ( http://www.underlight.com ) as it pretty much perfectly fits the description of what you're looking for. We're also working on a new sequel project called Reclamation you can read a lot more about on this site.
I think in the future you can expect to see less and less role playing and not more. The reason being (just my theory) is that mmo's are drawing more interest from the non-traditional mmorpg players. Back when UO and EQ came out the people who started playing the game were already RPG fans. It was more of a selective fan base. Now there are dozens of mmo's out and internet connections are blazing fast which are bringing in more casual gamers instead of role players. Role players have always been a minority in the gaming industry. But what is happening is the majority is now migrating over to the role playing games and leaving out the RP. Much to the dismay of some.
I have to agree with you there imasig. The RPGs of today are not really RPGs, or at least the true definition of an RPG. To me an RPG is a game where you not only take on the role of an individual but create that individual you are playing the role of. Sure most games just put you in the shoes of a Hero and you do as the story tells you to. But thats just being an actor in a boring 3-D play where you can be the star even though your Ugly as sin. (Not All Gamers Are Ugly) A true RPG set you in your shoes, to burn the script and just start walking into the sunset and handle any situation how you would actually handle it, not how the story drives you to.
In conclusion, I belive that a True RPG doesn't have a story at all from the beggining, but develops one according to how the players interact in the world. One where every role and position is filled by players, NO NPCs. Where the evil wizard you are supposed to hunt down is another living, breathing, beating heart person with a soul. The game world should just be laid down by the developers, where as the shaping of that world is in the hands of the actual players.

The only 'true' RPG i have ever run into in my time is a game called 'underlight.' This is a intricate game in which you have total control of your own advancement without the 'bots' that hand out the same quests to everyone. This is a game where you as a controller drive a character into a world that you can have total control over. Im handing you folks the deck of cards right now. www.underlight.com Sculpt and manipulate your way into this game, give it a shot and if you like it just say i told you so.
Originally posted by Razage The "RP" in MMORPG was evicted like an unpopular roomate that alphabetizes everyone's socks by brand. The reason being that RP'ers don't care about how good Counterstrike rejects do in a game and this bothers the Counterstrikers so they feel it's important that everyone knows they're uber, so they annoy the RPer's as often as possible. So the cycle goes like this: CSer: "I R Teh Ubar L33t!!!! B0w B 4 me or pheel my wrath!!!!!!!!!111one" RPer: "I see.... by the gods I've never seen such an idiot." CSer: "U R just jelious because I R Better then j000, pwwwwwnnnneed." RPer: "I don't think so CSer. I think I'll just go over here now and leave you be." CSer: "That's right, run away like a little rabbit. I R ubar so your reaction is typical. I'm soooo ubar and better then U!!!" RPer: "I'm just going to pretend I didn't hear the drivel you just spewed." CSer: "Haha, u r just mad because I'm so good. I'm sorry, but ur mommy can't help you." RPer: "Okay, this is rediculas. I'm leaving." *RPer quites game to not have to be around this annoying person.* CSer: "Bahaha, that fagg0t left because he couldn't stand how ubar I am, lololololololol!!!" CSer2: "OMFG, he was so PWND. ahaahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahlolololololololollllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!one!!!!" And the cycle continues.

Roleplaying is fun and I didn't vote either becuase you left "Just playing with friends" off the list. I like roleplaying, but sometimes I am just not into it and want to just do whatever with some friends. While friends are the most important aspect in a MMORPG for me, I would still say roleplaying is pretty important. I have found that roleplaying often makes me like to play the game that much more. Powerleveling, monster hunting, item looting, crafting and everything else can be fun too but I like to mix it all up and do some of each.

I had to vote for monster hunting here, because thats all there is to do in MMORPG's.
There is hardly any scope to roleplay in any of the games i have played, and those that give roleplay options, such as CoH rely on people setting a character dancing and going to work for the day.
I would love to roleplay a character properly, drinking in the tavern, breaking up bar brawls, talking of my adventures, jounsting etc. but no games make this worthwhile at all.
The most role-play you can do is go hunting the right type of monster, or hunt it in a certain way depending on your character type.
What is needed is a way to gain xp from being in character rather than killing things. Only fighter kill stuff for a living and for example a priest should be able to gain xp from staying in the church and offering prayers/ feeding the poor/ listening to confessions as well as by hunting and healing people.
This is exactly what Underlight and its sequel Reclamation are designed to do. Award Experience and skill points for Roleplaying and thats the only way to obtain them. Its a very dynamic game in its unique gameplay.

Underlight also has a system that you as a controller can reward others for Roleplaying. This unique system is called 'Personality Points' a system utilized for player to player rewards. So in theory a GM doesnt have to be around to be rewarded for your great Roleplaying efforts. With these accumalative personality points you may advance, evoke spells that you would normally not be allowed to evoke, gain XP, ETC. I must say it is quite the revolutionary system.
hmmmm That actually really sounds revolutionary.... This game could quite possibly have one of the best systems ever.... I always wondered why everyone gave such high regards for this game.... I have to check it out now..
Although, ON A Realistic note... This game is much like the existence of Alien Sentient beings... The public just isn't ready... Lol... The PP system is a but hard to abuse. Everyone gets 2 PP's every day, and you can give them to anyone you want, but, You can only give a PP to the same person once a week, thus removing the perposed abuse.

Hello all... I have been a current player in underlight for over 6 years.. yes i said 6 years I have tried to leave to goto more mmomonsterkiller games but i was always dragged back simply becuase they lacked something ROLEPLAYING . True underlight doesn't have top of the line graphics but they give you enough to work with. I encourage any to give it a try.. there a 30 day free trial for it.. i don't know if anyone has mentioned that. http://www.underlight.com
PLus with the upcoming recalamation this might give you a feel of whatthe comunnity will be like. becuase we are all roleplayers something you don't find alot of...
I played asherons call for awahile. but my clan was roleplayers... Talk about hard to ropleplay when l33t dud3 keeps trying to get the score for the super bowl from you.... But i encourage you even just go chat on our forums in the player chat section. It's a blast.
