SWG isn't the only game that SOE has made. Did lucas arts play a hand in the pit falls of SWG? Perhaps and who knows to what degree, but it's illrevelent. The people who "hate" SOE by-in-large haven't made their decision just based upon the disaster that is SWG. SWG is  the pennacle, but far from an isolated oddity.

SOE has established a patteren of horrible and dismissive customer service, releasing games with little content, unfinished, broaken, having horrible priorities when "fixing" their games, lying to their player base (consistantlly and obviously), and ignoring their loyal base desires in order to try to obtain the mythical player base. So trying to lay SWG's downfall at Lucas's feet simply doesn't hold water because you can see the same patterens in planet side, EQ, EQII, Vanguard, ect.

Wow the smilies on these forums are great =D

Anyways slot of people prefer EQ2 as it is now over how it was at release... (A lot of the people coming back and current players that is) So they are at least doing one game right. And with Vanguard (BLEH) hopefully they don't mess it up (not sure if that is actually possible with what they were given to work with).

Sad but true and EQ wasnt a creation of SOE I dont belive. When I Played the original EQ before SOE got their mits on it, the opening screen would say Verant. Now im not sure if thats one of SOEs companies or if they simply bought the game from them like they seem to do often nowadays.

Verant ( formerly RedEye Interactive )was a sub-division of Sony Online Games. When Sony Online Games and 989 studies re-organzied and merged to make SOE they pulled in Verant. Verant and EQ1 were always part of Sony and thus SOE.

That's quibbling. Verant wasn't under the direct control/management of SONY.  Varant was basically an  independent R&D devison funded by sony but self managed.

I do wish Mmorpg.com would do something about all the the SOE hate on these forums ,its getting beyond a joke and is totally unwarranted. SOE have done alot for the  industry and sadly people have short memories as they have been involved in one of the most succesful Mmo's series to date namely EQ and EQ 2,

And dont start whining again about SWG its become tedious beyond belief listening to all the unwarranted hatred towards Sony.

Sony are a huge part of the Mmorpg Industry and are going to be hopefully for along time.

For god's sake they made one mistake with SWG,and they dont deserve the Hatred ...give em a break and let em get on with what they do best which is make great games .

SOE bought  Vanguard 4-6 monthes before release realising it wasn't going to be ready for realease and pushed it into release anyway. How is this not SOE's fault?

    Just wanted to clarify

    Vanguard Release: Jan 30 2007

    SOE's Purchase : May 15 2007

If SOE was on my country, they would have so much problems (we actually have laws which protects the consumer). In here, a company cant pull something like NGE and get through, there was a lot of comercial promises on the very SOE site for the future of SWG (for example the smuggler revamp),  and then they just wipe it all, change the core of the game, without announcing. They just lied to all their consumers and thats ok... In here this is considered highly illegal. No company can treat their consumers are idiots like this and get well from the law. Advertising something that you know its a lie is illegal on my country.

Ok, not all countries have a good law system, but what scares me most is that a few consumers still think thats its ok to do that.

They are so selfish for thinking only in their belly button, that they still support companies like this one. I have even heard ´its business´. Its not, its scheme, anything that deceive people is a scheme... Countries have laws against it, civilized people despise those companies.

Want people to bring up the screenshots of how "Finished" everquest was during expansions.

40% of Everquests expansion was finished when it was released. 60% was made with $ from subscriptions after release date.

    It's easy to forget.

They killed, EQ, they killed SWG, they killed MxO, they killed Gods and Heroes, they killed PS, and I'm sure they'll kill the agency too.

You seem like a very negative person and unable to see that Everquest is easily the best MMO on the market at this point in time.   EQ was not ruined, it is still alive and kicking, just old.  SWG was ruined by LA, like it or not.  Vanguard was ruined by a lazy crap opiate addicted Brad McQuaid.  SOE is a fine company, they are just taking loads of BS that they don't deserve.  When SOE hits the nail on the head for their newest MMO, you will think twice about doubting their superiority being an MMO powerhouse.

Now for some but whoopin'.  You sir, pretending to be a female, are extremely short sided and need to take a deep breath and exit this forum immediately because you are unwanted here.  I'm not going to be a loser and tell you to go outside, but I will tell you to get off the The Agency forum if you are not going to open your views outside of what you chose to hear.  It won't get you far in life and I hope you realize that.

Get your history straight.  Sigil wasted millions of Microsoft's dollars and MS dropped them.  Sigil hooked up with SOE and then ran out of money, forcing them to launch.  SOE then came in and bought them  up in order to clean house and straighten out the game.  By this time, either SOE is learning from its mistakes or not.  Given the corrective measures its put in place to fix the NGE, they're paying far more attention to them than ever before (much to the disappointment of the refugees but what's done is done-- move on.)

Your commentary is only sage advice if people :

    1. do not begin rampant speculation about what the game can do from snippets of press releases, setting unreasonable expectations.
    2. take the time to hear out reviews of a game after release rather than blindly purchase it.

....the thing is, smart consumers already do that.

If you're going to cry about swg, take it to that forum.

Yes SOE did not own Vanguard or Sigil till a couple months after launch. SOE, ironically wasn't involved in this failure, but they are trying to pick up the pieces and save this game, which has much potential.

Hmm, honestly, I'm realistic and I can probably see some things that others missed here.

Everquest servers crash daily multiple times. Daily, this has been going on for months now, I think 6 months at least, that every server randomly crashes at a random time and stays down for 1hour+ often.

That happens on every server, randomly, SOE has no intention to fix this and all my friends left EQ and so have I. Go to the Everquest veteran forums. See for yourself what the topics are about, I frankly don't care anymore.

But people are often misinformed and take things with a spoon of sugar coating.

Are you serious? Everything he said was true. SOE has screwed up every game they have ever had. They refuse to listen to the customers that plead with them to stop butchering their games, but they don't listen. If they do decide to listen, it is always to little to late. Read up on your history before you start bad mouthing people.

I'm quite familiar with the history -- I think it's unnecessary to drag it out yet again, especially from a player who at the time had 9 posts to his credit.  It reeks of trolling.

First off i find it funny that the only thing you have against people is "Wow this person only has 9 post" SO FREAKING WHAT?!?! Everyone starts somewhere smart one.  And 2nd, Every game SOE gets is considered ruined.  Companies are stupid for letting SOE get ahold of it in the first place.

Personally, I think SOE is doing a good job.  The last 3 MMOs I have played have been SOE games, and I've had fun in every single one of them.  They've all been well worth the subscription fee.

Most of the SOE hate on these boards revolves around SWG.  People can't let it go, and others who are incapable of thinking for themselves or being objective just repeat the same garbage over and over.  It's pathetic.

This will be half-assed and pushed out the door way before it's ready so they can get their $$ rolling in while the people that bought it continue the beta testing. It's the same for me as well. SOE ruins every game they get their hands on. Let's see, they've ruined... Planetside, SWG, EQ2, Matrix Online..  PoTBS just came out, and that's just a JOKE.

Planetside and SWG were both good games at launch, but of course they eventually pulled a Sony, and ruined them both.

    Playing: BF2142

    Waiting For: Jumpgate: Evolution

Played: UO, DAoC, MCO, EQ, AO, TSO, Shadowbane, Planetside, SWG, FFXI, CoH, L2, EQ2, WoW, MxO, EVE, AoC

    Played 6mo+: UO, EVE

So what exactly are you saying the majority of gamers have no brain? That is exactly what you are saying because the majority purchased playstations over any other console, and your saying that there games are failures are you not?Let me look up yep, that's what you said.I smell hypocrisy. The OP prolly owns a playstation 1/2 and 3 lol.

Myself i can't stand consoles, but when i asked tons of people why? They ALL answered the same>>>"We buy playstation because the GAMES are better".It is ALWAYS xbox who tries to undercut playstation in hopes to compete.

If it wasn't for SOE and the huge success of EQ,i doubt there would even be much hype into the MMORPG industry and yes it was released on a console, something blizzard couldn't possibly handle with there 1k plus employees ..lol.

The OP mentions short memory? I guess he forgets about the mediocre success of the final fantasy series?the everquest series? Why did blizzard choose to COPY the EXACT same template as EVERQUEST when they decided to dwell into this market? Why didn't they choose there beloved DIABLO or STARCRAFT?Shows alot of bravery and ingenuity don't you think?/sarcasm off.

Ya success goes along way in determining a product, look at wrestling? The biggest pile of junk that ever hit the T.V and it owned the airwaves ,bombarding my favourite sports stations and it's not even a real sport. It's all about the money, nothing more nothing less.I think this shows more the mentality of paying customers and viewers.I am sure there is thousands out there who WASTE money because they want to be like the jones as i am also sure there were thousands that jumped onto the MEDIOCRE effort of WOW because the jones were.

You can go on and on all you want about SOE and blizzard, but i would like to see blizzard and there HUGE payroll come up with an effort even 50% as good as FFXI for a CONSOLE!I am 100% sure they cannot and would fail miserably.

I would also like to know how well BLIZZARD would have made out with there fanbase because there servers were FREE not like everyone nowadays charging 15$ /month.?They chose instead to be followers of SOE becausse at the time HEAT.net run by SEGA was also offering free servers with a much better variety of games, not just there own in house games as blizzard did.Yep blizzard is not really a success, but mere followers with there flock of blinded sheep.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Man there are some people who really can't get over the NGE which was the downfall of SWG which was brought on by Lucasarts. Sony owned EQ2, Lucasarts was looking at the World of Warcraft Pie and said we want some of that. If SOE wanted to make a World of Warcraft clone the obvious choice would be to do it to their already established fantasy game.  It was done because Lucasarts got greedy. Lets not joke ourselves Lucasarts can make terrible games at times.

Gods and Heroes had nothing to do with Sony. Sony saw what Perpetual was doing (failing) and pulled out. Perpetual was the failure, they were the ones that also managed to drive the Star Trek IP into the ground.

As for Vanguard Sony was in charge of distribution at launch. The launch was because Sigil ran out of money.

They did not ruin MxO, MxO was dying before they purchased it. They are at least letting the servers run for those who still play it. It's better then other games who just shut down.

And Planetside still goes fairly well. It was a brand new attempt on a game. A MMOFPS.  You can't blame someone for trying something new and it wasn't popular. At least they tried.

Don't get me wrong, I was completely burned by the NGE. I was a BE/CH. Both classes were basically removed from the game. But unlike the majority of others on these boards I realized that the what happened to SWG  is no the fault of a Planetside Dev, or an EQ2 Dev or anyone else. So I got over it and kept playing. I enjoy EQ2, and PoTBS right now. Am I sad about SWG? Yeah, but I was able to get over it and enjoy my gaming experience.

  • bverjibverji Member UncommonPosts: 722

Your assumptions about Lucas arts pushing for change is based on nothing other then conjecure. There is no way to know what pressure Lucas arts put on SOE, but it was ultimatly SOE's decision and how it was handled with cover up and lies was certainly all SOE's fault. As well even if LA did push for changes,  if SWG hadn't underpreformed due to SOE's mismanagement in the first place LA would of been less likely to push for changes.

Trying to blame LA for SWG's down fall just doesn't hold water. Besides the points above, while SWG was the worst of SOE games, it is representative of the same pattrens of dishonest business ethics that they have illustrated in other games.

As fr vanguard as I said before. SOE as publisher didn't have to pay to put vanguard on the shelves if they thought the product wasn't ready for release. But, SOE has a patteren of releasing games knowing they are broaken/incomplete. Soe was getting their money for publishing and didn't care about it's quality that is the tyoe of respect that SOE has for it's customers.

Let's see here. What can SOE hang its hat on?

EQ? Nope, they took that from 500K subscribers down to a ghost town now.

EQ2? Nope. It was such a joke at launch they had to totally redo combat and encounters. Still a pretty lifeless game.

SWG? LOL. It had trouble from the get go. It went downhill a little more each patch until the NGE killed it. I will leave it at that.

    VG? No, just no,

    PotBS? WTF is this??

Ok, fanboys, what game are you basing SOE superb talents off of? Anything they touch is turned to crap. They have some 90 year old man trying to make decisions on what gamers want. They need to stick to making TVs. All their MMOs combined probably doesn't even reach what they had when EQ was in its prime.

Woah, wait a minute. You can hate SOE all you want but hate it for the right reasons.

EQ: old game.. very old game.

SWG: true it has problems from the start and they seemed to make decisions that pissed off the playerbase

EQ2: Started out "meh" and it is actually a better game now then when it started

    Vangaurd: They didn't make it

    POTBS: they didn't make it
