I'm sure the 500ish forumwhores on mmorpg.com make a very correct picture of what around 20 million people think (Wow population + everyone else, very rough number, but you get the idea..)

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

Uff, fortunately popularity and the number of subscribers says nothing about the quality of a game. Otherwise we would need to consider Britney Spears and Eminem the greatest artists of our time. Let's say WoW brought all the btnet kids into MMORPG genre showing them how would EQ1 and AC2 look like if they replace deep system with simplicity and overcommercialized mediocrity.

I played EQ1 from 1999 till 2005 and in that time I lead 2 different guilds on 3 different servers through the cutting edge raid content, from Velious to Omens of War (while I raided Kunark I wasn't the guy leading us).  I know pretty much every raid encounter in those eras back to front.   If you would like to test me, go right ahead.  Thanks to Google, everyone is an "expert" on these encounters, so be sure to ask me questions such as, how rangers AM3 was nerfed in PvP and the rangers cried - despite the fact I never did PvP because I found the community distasteful.

Ask me questions relevant to the period, such as, what were pre-nerf mod rods like, what was the pre-velious interface like, etc etc.  I don't think you'll pose much of a challenge to me.  I even tried out Legends, Stormhammer when that came out - which had a significant portion of ex-Sullon  Zek players who would go there, gear up in a PvE envrionment and attempt to transfer back.  You must remember the anger that caused at the time?

So now I've answered you.  How about you reconsider your position on WoW, consider the fact you might be wrong, consider that WoW isn't really as bad as you make it out to be?

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I have to agree with Asmith84...  the charts on this site are absolutely not representative.  These forums are full of people who hate wow with a passion, hence the 19th place. Yet, the game has the most subscribers of any mmo out there.

Lol, even auto assault gets a whopping 8.1 here while AU is shutting down next month. Not to mention all the free games who are sharing top positions in those list.

    It's a joke.

    I agree totally

You just stated that you could get the info from google, but meh, about how much did a manastone run on a pvp server post nerf?

That's not a relevant analogy.  Brittney Spears doesn't get favorable reviews from well known music critics,  yet,  World of Warcraft is probably the most critically acclaimed MMO out there.

So your Brittney comparison begins to crumble under the slightest of scrutiny.  Language can be a useful tool, but only when used in conjunction with the brain.

And the US Presidential electoral system is even further removed from WoW is than music.  Are you guys even thinking when you're typing your hastily written, vitriolic anti-WoW remarks?

I'm trying to understand why you think the WoW community is more immature than you guys are.

Now seriously who thinks that video-game reviewers have a valid opinion on games. In 99% games the rating is almost identical to user's rating (just check www.metacritic.com).. Then compare the movie critic ratings with user ratings, you will find out they differ a lot. The point is that current video-game reviewers are not much older then Ultima from 1997, and they always try to agree with user ratings.

Except WoW is, by orders of magnitude, far more successful than any other MMO that came before it.

This is a pretty strong indicator that they did something right, in a very profound way.

WoW is a "simple" game in a lot of ways.  But part of the reason for that is that complexity makes the game harder to maintain, it's got more moving parts therefore there are more things to break.  The Blizz devs kept it relatively simple because they saw what others had tried to do, and avoided some of their mistakes to put out a pretty playable game with a lot of polish that isn't as resource intensive as other designs put out there.

The music analogy just doesn't make sense in a lot of ways.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

It depends whose reviews you read.   All those old-school games journalists didn't just die, there are plenty around still.  Show me a bad WoW review from a journalist with good credentials.  Show me one..

    I'm waiting.

    ...very poor metaphors.

  • 11lammas11lammas Member Posts: 2

Now what your are witnessing here people is just another 1superpro bash superpronr2 thread over a most loved and hated game wow. Really only 1 to be blamed for such threads to even happen in 1st  place is blazzard itself. So what did the developers do wrong. Wel once again we got to go back and see from what wow was made from. The dish is sum of its increadients, and if lucky even more :P wows 2 main ingredients were warcraft 3 and diablo 2. Outlook from warcraft and addictive char build gameplay from diablo. But what did they forgot? well i say its the hardcore mode that made diablo so great in the 1st place. What would have diablo2 been without it? lol...

Now wow has its stigma of a now risk kids game where no harm can come to them and the real "pros" therefore bash it. Its not too late. Blizzard add a hardcore mode to wow and no1 has a reason to bash it anymore :)

Dont get off the subject. It isnt about the masses.......its about number of subscribers meaning nothing? Sims with 25 million copies means something as well. While I wouldnt play Sims, its stil a good game to a huge amount of people.

No that means the concept of it appeals to mass market. Its easy, any computer can run it.. etc.  User rating and popularity has no connection to the quality or whatsoever, it only shows how much the game tries to appeal on average gamer. And let's be honest, average gamer at the moment is 14 years old kid with no imagination.
