this game's graphics dont impress me to be honest

i dont know much about the game or its mechanics ..

but i dont understand what the hype about its graphics are ...

they dont look that great imho ...in fact,  they dont look good at all ... very flat ... grainy .. and the body meshes of the characters look chunky and glued together ... they dont look smooth and intricately subdivded to me ...neither do they look like they will animate well

Though the game boasts some of the best customization I've seen, I must agree the skin pigments don't look quite right making the characters stand out in a bad way against an otherwise BEAUTIFULLY rendered virtual world.  Your character only looks good if they are covered in the detailed armor sets of the game... but skin tones need to look less like plastic.  Still one of the greatest looking MMO's so far created imho.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

The graphics for AoC imo are very good. In fact, I think they might be too good cuz alot of people won't be able to run it smoothly. I guess it's just a matter of whether you like them or not...

I agree,  some of the best I've seen.  I don't know what others are looking at, unless they think the graininess from youtube is the game,   Its not,  its Youtube.  Not to mention the best graphics won't be seen till we see some finalized DX10, but most of us don't have PC's to run that.. heh

I was almost writing: Dont feed the... But then I thought, maybe this peep only want a colorfull and animated thread so here i come:

Sorry but I really like the graphics and I really hope this game runs smooth on my nvidia 7900.

    Good luck.

I'm not Impressed by AoC's Graphics either...

Yeah they look good and all, but nothing special IMO. Games like Gothic 3, Crysis and so on feature good Graphics as well... yeah they aren't MMORPGs, but what PC is supposed to show 60 Players, let alone 300 in that style?

Besides of that, I don't like the wannabe-realistic Graphics style, because it's still utterly unrealistic and as such creates a sad looking style IMHO.

But ah well, Graphics don't make or break a Game, Gameplay is what is important.

Go look at the armor and weapons here: ftp://ftp.funcom.com/media/Age_of_Conan/screenshots/01jun07/

Graphics don't make a game, gameplay does. If you were to watch some new video's you would see how beautiful the game looks. Male and Female character types have over 2500 character animations each. Weapons animations are in line with the type of weapon swung in melee, they look like weight, dimension and swing arc's, have been taken into consideration.

Flat? Grainy?Glued together?  Its one complete model to me...

Static screens due to the nature of the internet are at 72 DPI resolution as an eg an average normal photograph is about 300 DPI

    Videos are a different matter.

Might want to take a look here mate.

If your interested in the game its time to get to know it. Oh and OP please dont start saying this game is made to be sold off, or your coming back in 5 months to say I told you so.

Just look at their Skin, the Knees, they look horrible IMO, like some kind of washed out plastic doll or something...

  • checkthis500checkthis500 Member Posts: 1,236

Those weren't the best screens to show Avery.  The third guy's neck looks broken, and all of them have their thumbs and part of their hands inside their thighs.

When a character model clips itself, there's a problem.

The armor looks fantastic.  The skin could use some serious work.

WHAT?? Their KNEES?   They look like real KNEES!!!  Muscle town is awsome, not to mention they have lifelike poses instead of standing upright in one possition.   His thumbs are behind his Kilt, not missing.   Not to mention those are DX9 graphics.

One of my many points. The graphics have great specs, but that doesnt mean they are "Good" graphics. Shit Everquests first graphics had playstation one graphics, shitty specs but the art and form of them made them better than most graphics I've seen nowdays.

I agree to some degree about the character models being subpar at times, but to me the real beauty is in the environment graphics. Sure it might just be the benefit of a few new shader tricks, but wow, everything I've seen makes me wanna run roll around in some virtual grass or breath some virtual air.

BTW, I also agree that ultra realism doesnt necessarily equate great graphics. Compare EQ2 vs. WoW. WoW is as cartoony and stylized as you get, yet next to the soulless models in EQ2, WoW's chunky models look really nice.

There have been several things I have criticized AoC for in the past, but graphics has never been one of them. The graphics are superb, especially the environments. Also I think they deserve kudos for their character creation, the visual options for characters faces are extraordinary.

If there is criticism in this area to be had, its purely in the area of performance. I've said before that the greatest graphics in the world aren't really useful if only a select few can actually use them. You can give them high props for its high end systems (and thankfully I will be among them), but if the lower quality settings that low and mid range people need really ruin the graphics... that will be a big problem.

I just hope Funcom spends as much time tweaking the lower end settings to get as much out of them as possible. Blizzard was very good at this, at making very simple graphics appear to be much better than the specs would make you think.

If you think Everquest had good artwork then this game isn't for you. the cutesy big headed graphics were the worst character models I have ever seen.

Have you even watched a video? The one where they show the game to the press covers character creation. The skin colors are perfect and the texture in DX10 is life like. You can see ever poor and whisker on the face. the joints look realistic. Maybe you just like cartoonish graphics, in that case Warhammer forums are perfect for you. BB.

The character movement and bodies were motion capture, They are 100% based on real people. Saying you think the characters look horrible just says you don't like realism. Not every one does but for those of us that find beauty in simple realism we are very impressed with the graphics. Terrains in this game are the best, the ground isn't a mix of brown and green with a few tufts of grass to add realism. It's all textured plant life, rock and dirt. I'd love to go to Eastern Europe, in the southern mountains ten thousand years ago and see that kind if terrain. The Temperate terrain looks like an ice age has just started retreating and cold climate wildflowers are every where.

You won't find impressive double back flips with swords shooting lightning in this game. It's not going to flash when you use a skill. This game is designed around realism with some surrealism thrown in. They call it magic realism. When you slice some one open you will see a mist of blood, not a flash of light.

the graphics rock.  haven't seen anything else that equals imo.  the character movements look great in the vids, too - very fluid and lifelike.  i think i wet myself while watching one of the developer interviews on gametrailers.  hoping the actual game lives up to my very high expectations...

  • butters88butters88 Member Posts: 379

It kinda looks like their eyes are bulging out in those screens. I've seen better ones then that.

i'm loving the graphics actually.  Usually I'm not a big fan of the realistic style like Vanguard, but this game actually needs it because it would NOT work as well in a different style.  This game needs real graphics to grab the feeling of a real dark world.

While almost all of the videos actually hosted at ageofconan.com are old and all of them but one are dx9, I haven't seen any true high quality footage that is current.  Apparently they redid the hair technology that hasn't even been recorded yet and wasn't in the game at e3.  Excited to see animated hair.  They're really polishing up the graphics.  The animations look AMAZING.  With the motion captured recording and all.  The videos of riding a mount look more realistic than any game I've ever seen that has a mount of some sort.  I've been very impressed and am sure will be more impressed with the final product in full resolution.

People accuse the OP of trolling but for all we know, maybe he/she does think the graphics are subpar.  It's just the OP's opinion.  I think the graphics are fine, especially the environment.  Like someone else said, I think the eyes look a little funny and I hope they tweak that but otherwise, everything looks ace to me.  I'm more curious as to how the game plays, because to me and I assume a lot of other gamers, that's where it really matters when it comes to any game.
