You are ill informed then. No offense, but Shadowbane, while having a craptastic engine and lots and lots of bugs, is all about pvp. There's nothing to do BUT pvp really.
DAOC isn't all pvp, but RVR is pvp. There's no such thing as this game is real pvp and this one isn't. If you can kill other players its pvp.
Something like UO is pvp, not THE pvp though, its just FFA pvp. DAOC is not THE pvp, but realm vs. realm pvp. Eve is not only about pvp, but it has its pvp areas, and though I've never played it, I've heard a lot of people say good things about it.
Hell, even FPS's aren't REAL pvp, because they are pve games, where you can log onto pvp instances to kill other players. If you're playing the single player game they all start as though, its pve. If you look at it in that light...fps's are just pvp instances... like WoW.
I am gonna have to say UO cause that is where i learned of PVP and happened to have died to one for my first time. Ill never forget that Corp Por killing me and the guy that killed me was named Joebagadonuts i didn't know i fi should laugh or cry ,all while he was looting me and talkin shit.
I liked ballista in FF XI ... probably one of the few Oo ... but im not gonna bother explaining it since i voted wow just because i dont usually pvp alot but i had some fun with it in wow.
the results so far are daoc, are you people kidding, ugh what a horrible pvp system its so lacking just like all the new pvp systems these days, shadowbane wasn't too bad, if you knew what you were doing you could turn a battle around, but daoc and the others haha if i wanted a system when the first to see the other person wins i would play a fps... uo is my vote, a good pvp system should be like a game of chess, where there is something to do for everything your opponent does and you only lose if your not as good... didnt get into ac but i heard that one was pretty well done along those lines also

Don't even have to think about it: Dark Age of Camelot.
The RvR-system with it's relic raids and keep sieges is the most-elaborated PvP-endgame ever made. And it took YEARS until finally other MMORPGs had the notion to pick it up (AoC and WAR).
I can't believe some people voted for WoW!? lol oh well, prolly just lacking experience in MMOs. I voted UO. I've heard DAoC has great PvP, but I've never played so I would have to say UO. Of course UO today is nothing compared to old school UO PvP.
Is easy.
I never had too play time + I never played UO + I never got the cap lvls/skills in Daoc or Eve Online = i never played those pvp's.
In WoW, since lvl 20 is possible to make pvp in almost all zones. To be doing quests and to feel that anyone can kill me is the best pvp i have played.
I know that the pvp system in Daoc, UO or Eve are very goods but the question of this thread is "best pvp mmorpg you've played to date".. personally WoW, simply. The job, the school, my friends, my girlfriend, my familiy, the beach, the partys.. dont let me to play 3 hours each day..
Its a pity I never tried Daoc so I cannot compare Eve to it. If you can live with not having a player char in front of you and you like ffa pvp everywhere + you lose everything when you die + lots of ganking and an unbelivable amount of variables + huge economy then eve is for you. If you are a carebear though or have no patience then dont bother.

I think most of these people are just voting for it cause they heard it had great PvP or they hadn't played any of the other prime PvP games.

I agree with this, only my second place would be Lineage 2.

I'd probably say DAoC has the most fullfilling pvp I've played. Relic raids were especially fun and even if you weren't 50, often they would call for anyone of any level to come defend just to try to lag out the attackers.
The concept of the relics was good too, a server-wide buff if you manage to steal one. So anyone, anywhere, any level would benefit from it.
No competition really. FFA, body loot, projectile spells (you can actually dodge spells and arrows...gasp!).
Not to sound elitist, but it's almost humorous to see people vouching for these other games *cough* daoc *cough*. Besides UO, there really is no comparison. Anyone who has played all these pvp mmo's will tell you the same exact thing. Level based games just cant have good pvp. In AC, a skilled lvl 50 player can own a decent lvl 126+.
and OP, how can you not have AC DT listed?!?!!! Everyone in the mmo community knows Darktide is infamous for its FFA politics.
The feeling of good pvp isn't what you were feeling in guild wars. Although it is in fact good and bad. You are feeling the evenness to their pvp. Everything is even and balanced so no one is a good and the others are complete noobs. They also don't have uneven battles for 10 vs 8. unless someone quits. Then you still have a chance to win if you work as a team.
Daoc does a decent job evening with realm bonuses and relics and stuff like that. But anyone can join a pvp battle so you can end up with 20 mids 30 hibs and 12 albs. Now this doesn't seem fair at all when it's 30 vs 12 and you've got a 2% dmg increase. Well that isn't gonna make up for the 18 other chars dealing damage to you. Now is it? So in that way that is were DAOC fails.
I'd go with DAoC or LII for the outdoor PvP, where WoW isn't close, but I do like WoW's options of Battlegrounds and Arenas. Never played UO, but I think I'd have liked its PvP back in the early days.

Just thought I'd point that out.

The best PvP game I played back in 98 / 99 was Asherons Call. But if I had to pick from that list it would be either Shadowbane or Daoc.
mmorpg's flop faster then mcdonalds cheese burgers these days.
was SWG before LA gimped it..
the best out there now thats a hard one.. DAOC i would prob go for.
lol ? SWG?, You gotta be joking..

and isnt anyone gonna vote CoH/V
Shadowbane was the most fun I've had in an MMO doing PvP, too bad more people didn't play it, would have been more fun.

Not one of those games even comes close to the pvp in Shadowbane.
Yah Shadowbane is that good.
Intense. Action. Lose all your stuff. No grind. Lose your city. Balanced. Tons of combinations / classes.
Too bad the graphics were never good, and the game needed something else imo - just never really caught on.

Do you understand now?
Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies
Best 1on1: a tie between WoW and EvE.
Best group battles: EvE online

Only PvP I enjoyed was DAOC, it really encouraged grouping up, was actually fun to play, this formula is in the making again, RvR is just FUN!
It's only the beta but Fury to be sure. Purely awesome pvp gameplay.
I am sorry. I took the best know mmorpg out there.....
without a doubt, AC1 Darktide.

I'd have to say WoW has been the most fun and still is for me. I've played almost every major MMO since my first MMO (FFXI)

ASheron's CAll 1 Darktide or DArk age of Camelot get my choice.
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
Could have included AO instead of CoX.
