Best current MMO pvp by far is EVE. You can loot your enemy. When you get blown to bits you loose your ship and everything it was fitted with. There is risk.
Can't believe WoW has 15%.. I can hardly respect that opinion... WoW pvp is so so SOOO lacking!!!!! It's fun if you like zerging.. (ok, ok, i get my kicks on it too... for five minutes and then it's gone..)
Though I am kinda torn on this issue... Because of character twinking and tower wars, my vote would almost assuredly go to Anarchy Online, which isn't listed on the poll... Because of RvR, I am tempted to vote Dark Ages of Camelot (which i did for monitoring results sake)... But on the other hand, I appreciate more hardcore aspects of PvP that I found both of these games lacked (a la lineage 2, granted gold dropping in DAoC.. but that wasn't very harsh..)...
I went with WoW. Shadowbane and GW are a close 2nd though for me. Shadowbane, I like for its use of RTS style building and taking cities and its use of politics. Guild Wars I like for being able to easily make different types of characters and that gear isn't a big part. I picked WoW though for its variety. Whether you like arena style pvp, battleground pvp, open world pvp, or even just dueling, WoW has it. Other than world pvp(which I understand is kinda lacking now), it is usually quick and easy to get into a battle/match.
By far has to be DAoC. If there was a second it would be Guild Wars. DAoC brings together an amazing group PvP mixed with fun and interesting classes, can't beat that.

best pvp? strictly pvp i'll have to say a little game called RYL. the combat in that game was brilliant. one of the most fun games i played to date, everything else was rubbish but the pvp was brilliant. it's a simple game but thats what made it fun. 2nd would be WoW i suppose but i've yet to play a mmo thats as fun and easy to grasp as RYL - quick, easy and sometimes quite addicting.
I never had the pleasure of playing UO pre trammel. I may have liked it.
But IMO the best isn't on the list, and was called Neocron.
Like UO the developers didn't understand what made the pvp so adrenaline packed and nerfed it by accident, so the game became far less fun after a while. In fact they made so many idiotic design mistakes that they drove the game into the ground. It hasn't been cancelled but the server populations have gotten so low that the economy doesn't work. The people who designed the game originally where on temporary contract I think, and were 100X smarter than the clowns the game was handed to after.
Anyways it was a MMOFPSRPG, there was very in depth character development, player driven economies etc. The combat was like an fps except you had to aim for a second at a target before you were likely to hit it. Sort of like deus ex.
The thing that made the game so fun was that the economy made for fast wealth accumulation but valuable items rode on the outcome of a pvp match. Nothing was more fun than winning a multislotted rare weapon after a fight where you risked losing your own such weapon. But even if you lost everything you had (which you didn't, you only lost one item and had to get some implants reimplanted) it would only take a couple hours to recover your losses.
The best guns were created from parts randomly dropped from the toughest mobs, which a smart player could solo with the best non rare guns.
Everything about the system was totally changed making the game a mediocre carbon copy of everything else out there.

For my without any doubt UO(pre Trammel), i had also heard a lot of good things about Asherons Call DT, and i guess i would have liked it very much, too.
After that Shadowbane had a nice concept, but was lacking extremely in execution(bugs, lag, not so well done movement, duping, miserable graphics and what not). So it falls in the end quite behind, maybe even behind DAoC, which would be my next choice.
DAoC is most probably the best consenseual pvp game, but lacks against real ffa pvp games in intense and the ways of pvp.. in the end, DAoC PvP is just about fighting, in UO and others(Shadowbane and AC as i heard) you got also politics, economy warfare, which make the world and the pvp much more involving and exciting.
And WoW is far behind, any multiplayer game(RTS or FPS) offers more than WoW. But the games above are more involving than a normal multiplayer game, because they offers a little bit more more than the competitive fighting between two groups in a set boundary.
DAoC 8v8 rvr was the best gaming experience I have had. If only they didn't release ToA I would still be playing. I went back to the Classic servers and had fun for a couple months, but its not the same. I don't think any game will replace the fun I had in that game.
Best? EVE... really there's nothing that even comes close. SWG Pre-CU had a decent PVP system but needed a lot of work. Unfortunately that game no longer exists so can't really be considered as an option.
If Sci-Fi isn't your thing the best fantasy MMO PVP system I've played was DAOC, by far.
UO had good PVP but it really had no point whatsoever. WoW has a 'decent' PVP system but I've never gotten into arena crap, same reason I don't bother with PVP in Guildwars.

I know so many peole though NGE sucked but i loved the battles in naboo before restuss just some basic 6 on 6 action that could turn 20 on 6 in a instant. I like restuss too remeber one day when the rebs finaly got hold of restuss(imps were bout 3-1 on shadowfire) and it was a few 30 on 30 battles before they just zerged us with mabye close to 60-70 people, what made it even better was that the npcs were coming in at that time too and we were at the reb spawn point. Sadly im gonna have to wait for WAR to see that kind of open world stuff again( i know theres DAOC but im holding off on p2p games right now)
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day. And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

I used to enjoy the fast turn-based PVP of pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies - though I know PVP purists didn't like it much. Now, I enjoy the CoH/V PVP though it is very simple; however, that's the way I like it.
I have played every game on that list and theres only one game that stands out pvp wise
Ultima Online. No contest. If you dont choose pre trammel UO then you obviously never played it. It was the most insane/tense/heart pumping pvp in any mmorpg. If you got caught unready for battle you could end up losing a whole days work. As a pk on great lakes, i saw many many battles and every single one was completely different and insanely interesting. UO was so interactive, you could fight house to house, guild to guild, murderer to newbie, anything was fair game. And best of all skill mattered. Theres no button smashing and theres no cooldowns. Its all about smart play and out thinking the opponent. You had to hotkey usually over 100 keys in order to be a viable pvper. If you hit the wrong button in a fight, you were dead.
Its so sad that people will never get to try this pvp unless they go on a crappy private shard.
I think you would very much have enjoyed playing a Jedi in Star Wars Galaxies before Nov 2005.
In those days, you could be hunted by groups of player Bounty Hunters who spent a lot of time tricking themselves out with specialist equipment, food, spices and armour. If you were a low-level Jedi, your only option was to fight your way out of their traps and make it to a safe house or go off-planet. If, on the other hand, you had ground your way to being high level, you could fight them and, if you were good enough, beat them all. You never knew when players were going to take your bounty or when they were gfoing to ambush you. It was one of the most exciting, surprising adrenaline rushes I have ever experienced not just in online games but IRL. Only parajumping - in real life - beats it.

Ahem Pre Tram UO and DAOC are definitely PVP games

And DAoC was the best to date.

best mmopvp i played has to be EXteel from ncsoft, very fast and furious.

Asheron's Call 1 Darktide was the best and here's why:

Keep in mind it's got 9 year old graphics, and YouTube videos suck, but the PVP was great!

Cant say much about EvE, never played it.
Since GuildWars is in the list, i say Battlefield 2.
Easily DAOC
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)

Don't play DAOC. Rampant exploits...regular nerfs....game down to two signifigant servers.AOC and other games this year will bury it.

AC wasn't a PVP MMO... it had a server with a PVP ruleset but by design it was a carebear game that had a PVP server, just like EQ1.
