You've obviously overlooked the numerous threads on this site endlessly debating whether GWs is a MMORPG and should it be listed here on MMORPG.com.

To be honest, I haven't been this excited about a game, ever. Since mass duping caused me to stop playing D2, I've never yet found a game that comes even remotely close to comparing (except for maybe SWG, which was way ahead of its time). Since then it's all been about bind/notrade and crappy randomization, so I'm very excited to get a quality loot distribution system back on the gaming scene (heavy randomization accessible to everyone). Another very exciting thing is the 8-person max group size and randomized dungeon design (THE counter to bots), with the ability to solo the game if you have good enough gear. That's the challenge of any game for me, and no MMO allows you to do this. Perhaps the age of forced raiding might be at an end? I still to this day can't fathom how people got it into their heads that a MMO must include raiding, which forces people to work with vastly more people then they work with in the vast majority of job situations or in nearly every single popular sport in existence. There's a reason we don't see 40 people on either side of the field playing football, and it's nice to see some devs who understand this.
I was one of the people who would gladly have paid a monthly fee to combat hacking and cheating in Diablo 2, and the D2 developers of old are finally giving us this opportunity. Let's just hope they will actually be effective in stopping dupes and bots. If they can't stop the dupes and bots, then the game will fail very quickly (at least as far as mass popularity goes).
So if Hellgate is added why not Bioshock or Neverwinter Nights??
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
Well im not under NDA I played Hellgate: London at the last real E3. Hellgate will be mmo-like like guild wars. huge groups of people can meet up in town before trunning off into hell together
hellgate will at least have way more heart then the countless EQ-clones thats gonna get tossed at us. and they are heavily instanced too
I like hellgate way more then those EQ-clones cause hellgate will have way more innovation, a soul, and will for sure deliver.
Awesome action I jsut cant wait. I played it at E3 for hours (at least almost 2 hrs). its gonna smoke tons of these EQ-clones. it was so long ago when I played hellgate and I still think its way better then games ive been in beta testing for since.
Vajuras, did you get to try out the Hunter classes? Im curious to know exactly how much of an fps "feel" they have to them. I know they arent going to be full-on fps, but if theyre challenging and have the right feel Ill be hooked.
Ok, back on topic. Whether people consider Hellgate an MMORPG or not, this is only MMO Im actually planning on buying in the near future. It may not be a sandbox game, it may not have a lot of depth, but the fast paced and (hopefully) challenging gameplay will be a VERY nice change of pace.
I dont know much about Hellgate yet, but maybe it doesnt meet a few of the "unmentioned" MMO requirments. 1)Must have extremely slow, boring gameplay. 2) Must pretend to be an RPG. 3) Must have massive, repetitive grinds. 4) Must look, play, and feel exactly the same as every other MMO.
Amen! God forbid you actually have fun in an mmo! Its gonna be funny when 50% of mmo players are playing it and this site doesn't cover it because its designed to out-perform the archaic mmo model! Who the hell really wants 500+ people in 1 area... lagtastic! In 5+ years were all gonna be laughing at all the design flaws of the current batch of games and recognize this one as a forerunner of future online game design.

the only MMOs I follow these days must have aim/dodge and hellgate has plenty of it. I loved Diablo series bought both of'em. Hellgate is gonna nail a bunch of these clones to the cross and bath them in blood.
to aanwser your question at E3 if memory serves all they had was Templar and Summoner at E3. I was a Templar so I had a bad ass sword and a great gun
had great character custimization i couldnt believe how cool my templar looked
you can go first person view for shooting a gun or 3rd person view.
finally a multiplayer game that will have FPS/RPG elements. I am not sure if there has been anything like this game ever I am not lying.
Yea, it would be nice to see a game like Hellgate come along and snatch up a good portion of the MMO audience. Maybe then it would open up the eyes of some developers and publishers who apparently think theres only one way to make an MMO. Just the fact that Hellgate is the next game in the Diablo line should guarantee that it will be a hit, as long as they deliver what everyone is expecting.
Well i am not going to complain if Hellgate London doesn't make it on the site. Would I like to see it on the site ? Hell yes ! This game is going to be a huge success. Look at all the games on this site that are huge failures that get a free ride just because they fit the criteria of being a mmo. Instead of worrying about criteria they should be more concerned with putting quality games on the site. Thats just my 2 cents worrth.
Anyway, Hellgate London is going to be a great game with tons of people playing and will by far out perform many mmo's on this site subscription wise and profit wise too. I was so excited about this game I even cancelled my preorder to AOC to get this game. Send me into HELL baby for its gonna be one HELL of a ride
It's an actual Alpha review that's not breaking any NDA
Damn.... this game is getting me as hyped up as Diablo 2 back then. Anyone else remember being in late beta with just the barbarian to play and still enjoying yourself for days redoing the same 2 quests over and over again?
Let's look at an MMORPG logically and in detail. MMO - Massive(ly) Multiplayer Online RPG - Role-Playing Game Massive - means big, in this context it is modifying "multiplayer" to create a specific definition which is "a great many players" but is commonly defined as meaning "many thousands" Multiplayer - it's latin, roughly translates as (more than one player) Online - using the internet. Role-Playing - when one accepts the persona of another. Game - a thing to be played. singular. Okay, now that we have our definitions, let's apply them to Guild Wars (which will be refered to as GW in the equation below) if GW is a Game If GW contains Role-Playing If GW uses the internet If GW accepts more than one player and is considered "multiplayer" If GW is massive Then GW = MMORPG. Like it or not, there is no regularly scheduled update (patch) or fee (subscription) requirements to be considered an MMORPG. All you need is a lot of people accepting the role of another, playing over the internet together in a single game. Summary: Guild Wars is an MMORPG, and while not a Subscription-based MMORPG nor a TradMMORPG, it is still an MMORPG. Follow the above formula, plug in Hellgate: London... Implovers' simplistic mmorpg formula ftw?
So if halo = a game, if halo = role playing the role of master chief, if halo is multiplayer duh, and it has environments that are the same size as guild wars, obviously that makes halo an mmorpg .... ( this is sarcasm for all the stupid people out there )
An mmo is a fully persistent world, where thousands of people can play at the same time. Guild wars doesn't fit in to that. everything is instanced even the towns are multiple instances, same as hell gate, so hell gate is not an mmorpg. Why are people still arguing this, if you want to talk about hellgate london use their forums, if they don't have any, use off topic.

If that is part of your definition then the only game that is actually a MMO is EvE. Otherwise every other game splits people up into smaller sections. In EQ2 you have zones, you never play with thousands of players at a time. And if there are too many people in a zone then they make multiple instances of the zone (just like GW and Hellgate btw)
WoW - you play with about 40 to 80 people at max at a time in anyplace but the towns. Well once again GW and HG have lots of people in their towns, so it is the same thing.
Every MMO game out there has small numbers of people in any area except for Towns. There is no reason to exclude games that use this method. DDO uses small instances for your specific group when you enter a dungeon. Otherwise you are in the town with everyone else that is one, but once you leave to go fight you are in your own instance.
Hellgate is an MMO. It has RPG elements, it is persistant, it is online, and you can play with other people. (Halo isn't persistant , your character is the same whether it saves your progress or not)

if hellgate is not an MMORPG then City of Heroes is not an mmorpg. In CoH they instance off entire towns when it goes over. I dont know what the limit is but most CoH vets know that every zone will get instance off when we go over a threshold.
same with EQ2- at least at launch. I remember the cities being partitioned off into separate instances.
So if hellgate / guild wars dont belong here fine- but also boot CoH as well. and boot CoV
fact is they cant just discriminate based on 1,000 players or whatever in one zone. our computers would die a horrible death if that ever happened. I dont know bout a quad core + SLI + dual 8800 GTX setup but i know my system (2-3 yrs out) would freeze at 1 FPS
We are you people so uptight? Why does a game have to be a MMO to be listed here?
If it is:
Online
RPG
Multiplayer
Everyone can interact with everyone in some fashion
And persistent
isn’t that good enough?
And I don’t care that the site is called MMORPG. There is no law that says a site with MMO in the name can’t talk about non MMOs.
They could say MMORPG is all about MMORPGs and persistent online multiplayer RPGs. They could if they really really wanted to. It is not against the law or anything.
I think there is a game that needs to be added to your list. How do I submit this?
First, please make sure that the game is not already on our list. If you know the name of the game, make sure you sort our list by "Title" (click on the Title column name) and look for it alphabetically.
Second, make sure that it completes our definition of a MMORPG:
500 or more simultaneous players in one world.
The game must include some form of graphical common area. This distinction means Diablo II is not considered an MMORPG, while Guild Wars is.
It must be graphical...so no text based MUDs.
Persistent characters.
Some form of character advancement.
It must use a true client/server connection. In other words, no HTML or "web" based games. Games that run in a browser using Java are OK.
Five or more screenshots from inside of the game engine itself.
A professional web site free of annoying pop-up ads or Spyware programs and access to some kind of support system.
Must fully support English. This means the client interface, in-game chat, help system and support website must all be in English.
NOTE: At this time we are no longer adding 2D/Isometric games to our list - we will add these again at a later date once we adapt our list to allow feature filtering.
If the game fails to meet any of these criteria, we do not include it on MMORPG.com. Occasionally, we will cover high profile games that have not yet met the screenshot criteria, but they will still not be included in the “Game List”.
Ultimately, MMORPG.com reserves the right of final judgment on whether or not a game should or should not be added to our game list.
If you know a game that meets all of the criteria listed above, please email it to editor@mmorpg.com.
So stop deducting whether a game is a mmorpg or not. Hellgate doesn't meet the criteria for being put on this site(AFAIK), therefore it shouldn't be added. End of story!

This game should be listed, as it entails all of the essential elements of an MMORPG. Not to mention that this game will probably sell more then the next five new MMOs combined. I'm a super intellectual as well when it comes to video games. But I certainly won't deny myself uber hack and slash action made by the people who made D2, which is IMO the best game ever made (despite its numerous flaws). These are the people who put Blizzard on the map, so when it comes to concerns about shoddy development and premature launches, these are the guys I can safely pre-order from (which is exactly what I did!!).
While I agree Hellgate: London has certain MMO features and is a worthy candidate to be listed, by now it's quite clear that it won't...:)
So if Hellgate is added why not Bioshock or Neverwinter Nights??

Then people could bitch about both games being on here.
