Is there a reason why MMOPG.COM wants players to be poor spellers?

I understand a lot of the angst that certain people feel when they see badly spelled words & Poor grammer. In fact, from what I have read..a person who is exellent at both will  readmis-spelled words & poor grammer with the same portion of the brain that process' swear words.

Although I am far from a good speller anymore, I can very much understand what that's like, because netspeek of any variation looks like a disgusting spew of letters to me ("K, Yeh" whut" "meh" "ya").

What I don't get is, why does this forums refuse to respect the firefox spell checker?  I'm nearly 100% certain that anyone that would run a website forums would be very anal about spelling, but, of all of the forums that I have posted on, this is the only forums that does not accept it.

Can anyone explain to me why these forums make it so difficult to correct mis-spelled words?

That myth of people dropping out of school because they couldn't stop playing WoW isn't  exactly a myth, per se.

Edit: You should have also spelled the word "reason" as "raisin". It would have added the the irony.

Well it doesn't ignore it, as >>> mispelt <<< words still get a red underline, but yes it won't allow for correction, that you must do manually.

    No I don't know why.

Worry about something else. People can type however they want and as you said, your own grammar isn't prefect. If text-speak offends you find a new hobby.

I am rather tired of all the shortened words that have come from texting. It's annoying and makes people look rather idiotic.

How can I take someone seriously if they write things like no instead of know and wut/wat instead of what... or how about the old your when it should be you're.

    Quite tiresome, really.

DO U NO WAT I MEEN?

    *cringe*

Blast... I forgot to say that I have no idea why there's not spellcheck option for the forums here. I wonder how many would use it if it were an option.

I do use vent when I raid. Generally, I like to have my own music on when I game. So talking isn't always enjoyable to me. Er... Not that I'm super antisocial or anything. image

    grammer

    *hurk*

Oh, and the spell checker works perfectly fine for me.

Even native English speakers make a few grammar mistakes now and then. I overlook people that spell poorly, but I don't when people use the short handed net speak. If people can't type out "you" , "are" or spell "the", then I typically ignore them in MMOs. I have been in guilds where people were given warnings about using those short hand spellings, and were threatened with being kicked out of the guild if it continued.

I think the spell check works pretty good on MMORPG.com. It has flagged words that I have not spelled correctly.

You sound like me. Or maybe I sound like you.

Anyway, there IS a spell checker implemented into the post editor... Misspelled words are underlined in red, just as you might expect from Microsoft Word or something.

Either way, it makes me horrendously insecure having to read obnoxiously simplified and grammatically repulsive internet chat. I feel like some sort of English professor with a pet peeve. That, and I feel like I have to read complex literature, written by Stephen Hawking perhaps, just to compensate for the unshakable feeling of stupidity that overwhelms me afterwards.. IQs can be contagious.

Another question is, "Is there a reason why mmorpg.com members want to be brainless, heartless, ignorant, foolish, jerks who do nothing but belittle other people's ideas and breed an environment of intolerance equal to all forms of racism, sexism, and hate?

This community is no different than the rest of the internet community. They're all just a bunch of self-righteous, judgemental children who call themselve "free thinkers", but are ironically bound in chains by a thought process of illogical intolerance and brooding hostility to anyone who offers a difference of view or opinion.

If you don't believe me, just goto digg.com and read ANYONE's comments. You'll see what I mean by intolerance and brooding hostility.

Unfortunately not everything can be compatable with everything else. I would assume there are compatability problems between the firefox script and the site itself. Wether this is something that can be rectified by us or not, I have no idea. What I can say is we do not  go out of our way to make people poor spellers :P , and will not tolerate people who wish to victimise poor spellers. If you see posts where people are being flamed, or harrased about their spelling then feel free to report them to us and we wil take care of the matter.

I've been getting my spelling flamed from time to time as long as I have been posting here; and yet I always take care to correct my mistakes as often as I find them and, while not perfect, enjoy proof reading my posts.

Finally I worked it out, Americans speak a dialect of English. It's not me who can't spell, it's them.

You do understand that you did leave the R in mmoRpg.com, correct?

Sorry, in honor of the topic I just had to do that. ^_^

I'm not sure what you are referring to with the firefox spell checker.  I have firefox, but it underlines the words I misspelled with a red line.  Thats all you really need.  You can then go look it up via google if you can't figure out how the word is spelled.  If there is a spell checker in addition to this I didn't even know it existed.

You know what the real irony of this post is, that no one here has used any shorthand/text chat in this thread.

People are used to writing acronyms and other shortening of words, simply from playing games.

This is a gaming forum, so ofcourse people will write like that on a gaming forum. It's a habit.

    Can't blame people for that...

There is a spell checker though.   If they can't click this, what makes you think they would use Firefox spell checker.

I guess what annoys me is not necessarily poor spelling, but rather a sort of anti-intellectual attitude that it *sometimes* indicates. I mean, we all have gaps in our spelling, and that is particularly true if you're not a native-speaker of English. But when people actually could care less about how they spell or write, then the ire starts to rise.

Hmm... how to better describe what I mean? Non-native speakers and the very young might not have a very good grasp of English, but if they at least *try* to use proper English, then I respect them for that. I've seen some pretty well-written stuff from both of these groups. But even when they write something that is hard to understand, I am not about to attack them for it.

Some people, though, know better: they know how to write properly, but they choose not to. Some because they are too lazy, and others because they think it is "cool". I almost never attempt to correct these people: they don't want help, they want to wallow in moronic behavior. If you call them on it, they reply that you're being too narrow-minded and stuck-up. They don't get it, and they don't care. It's that whole attitude of laziness and/or lack of consideration for others that annoys me. I think it annoys a lot of people, but I doubt that anything I say or do is going to alter their behavior, so I just don't waste my time trying.

With all due respect... But who cares about what you think about someone, if all you can see is bad spelling.

Obviously Tuor7 cares what he/she thinks. :P And I care, to some degree, since it is nice to read someone elses views on the matter.
