if it is free - including the box/download of the client i'll certainly give it a shot
if the box/download of the client is not included in this "free" thing - as in they are just talking no monthly fee/subscription but you still gotta pay $50-$60 for the box - i won't give it a second look
nothing worse than buying a game and finding out parts of it are not available to you - as in Oblivions doors to nowhere unless you pay extra
Its the future of MMORPG's.
Look at the user numbers of any free to play game vs a pay to play game. Most P2P are dead or dying games. Once this next batch of clones....errr...."next generation" games falls on their faces, the subscription model will no longer be the industry standard.
Guild Wars is doing fine.
lolsmedleylol. Lets see...
When SWG started: "This is for the more hardcore gamer."
When NGE came in: "We wanted to make a more broader target audience."
Thanks but no thanks, im going to stay far away from this title. It will flop anyway. I'd bet an easy 100 bucks on it.

Once again Smed is talking non-stop about cash flow and revenue sources. He never talks about what is fun let alone what makes a game entertaining, just how to milk cash from the public. Might as well put an account in charge of programming for all the good this chump has done.
Rest assured, these "free" games will cost more to play than a typical subscription. That is why SOE is doing it and that is why they hired the former head of IGE (gold sellers supreme) to spearhead their new "business model".
Lol hidden fees, Sony's games usually suck and are rushed, let alone free ones, that would be a waste of a waiting for a download.

Copious amounts of pessimism I see..Granted. All the more reason why TA shouldn't be a p2p title no? The obvious flaw I see so far would be the "pay for better zones/contents" approach. That's probably the trickiest move in the f2p book...if not the weakest.
I'd give this a chance if TA can amply demonstrate substantial potentials to wring us away from the usual orcs kills humans, makes love to elves, dwarves pinches goblins and dragons makes lousy raid bosses fare.
Raiding with a .9mm doesn't seem so bad to me if anything...
By the way? Don't this belong in TA's own section?

I only wish it were not true.

What are you taling about, "doors to nowhere" ?? There are no doors to nowhere in Oblivion. If you are talking about the Shivering Isles expansion well, that is an Expansion, but there is nothing in the original game that costs extra unless you are buying a privately created mod.

They've wanted to do this model before this anyways and used EQ2 to test it out with station exchange.

This is a really bad move. Sony should be doing everything they can with this game to try to earn some trust back. I am pretty sure that they would make quite a bit more if they just charged $10 a month instead of the usual $15.
Seems to me like they just want an excuse to not add The Agency to their Station Pass...
You have to appreciate where SOE's coming from on this -- The Agency is going to be an mmofps, a persistent shooter. Do you really think people will pay $15/month when they already play Unreal Tournament, Half Life, Battlefield, Doom, Wolfenstein, etc online for free? The most basic premise to reach those FPS'ers (that broader market) is to make the game free. And in order to keep them coming back for more, hence the velvet rope....
Microtransactions? I think it comes down to personal financial control. If you think 15/month is fair to pay for access to a good game then you should be able to budget that spending accordingly. Then again, it seems like a lot of people make blind buys of mmo's even when they have plenty of information (and often times free trials) in order to make a wise decision but just ignore it all and throw their money away anyway.
No, I will try it, but I am very doubtful such a system can work for AAA titles I desire. There are FAR too many asian grinder F2P crap games already, and I definitely DONT see THAT as the future.

f2p models are bad, they just encourage poor development

You have already been proven wrong my IMC games. IMC games created Granado Espada (known as Sword of the New World over here). It won the presidental game award in korea and took 56 million USD to make, a budget that surpasses the vast majority of MMO's. This MMORPG is currently running on an item shop model in all released regions. The vast majority of MMORPG's run on the item shop mode. Item shops is not the niche market, monthly subscribtions are.

You must understand that ppl in west and east have VERY different gaming habits. And tbh, I could not care less what awards a game won, or what money they claim to invest. I tried Sword of the New World, it was nice and fancy, but there was SO little to do, compared to any of the big western MMOs, like WOW, EQ2 or whatever.
I am not a prophet to forsee what will come, but ALL F2P games I ever saw were quite lame and lacking complexity.

wether you like the game or not, the point is made. a triple A MMORPG that requires a big budget to develop can run on item shop models. We also see that almost every item shop game that has been released in the west is doing very well.
Lol, no it isn't. No smart and honest gamer is going to buy something from soe when they are saying gold farming, power leveling services, etc are ok to support. (Through their "exchange" and by supporting someone from IGE) Sure it is for them! it makes them money! But it ruins the in game economy! I am truly astonished... What idiots we have making and supporting games these days. They care nothing for the customers, and are very narrow-minded.
/end rant
In any case after SWG I wasn't buying anything from them anyway... this just sets that in stone.

Shit, sony ruined this game already and it's not even in beta. I should have listened to the people that said they'd soe the agency...

Thats exactly the point. It is no less than legalizing ruined economy and game balance.
In a game with monthy fee, I knew all players have the same start, and what you make of your character is from then on 100% your work. I can live with "cosmetic" things to pay, like a house or a horse. But all that is functional, sorry no thanks. I dont want the rich uber kids owning the games, while the average player is locked out of half the content and getting a half-assed gameplay.
In any either really free game, like GW, or the old fashioned monthly subsription games I know the guy in my group or if its PVP my enemy has those skills and items because he WORKED for them, not because he has more money than I do. Thats the basic fairness in all decend MMOs. I dont like the direction of this, and I can only hope the Agency, if this is the final word, sinks like a stone.

Amazing, Soe creates a free to play game and all you guys do is bitch about them. I tihnk you guys are just a tiny bit ungreatful. Also so what if you can buy items. Most gamers don't care, it's only the hardcore few and if you don't like it don't play the game.
I for one am fed up of this childish, unfounded, unrealistic and ungreatful attituded a few sad little gamers have with soe.
