On reflection thing is, for me, this is just a junky gimmick that will really not add to the world or gameplay. And as for Player - player interactions, whether there are mechanics to support that or not this NPC based feature will set the standard, and people are going to do things that might well merit a higher rating than M. People do such things in many other games of course, but the difference here is that it will gather about it a cloak of legitimacy "it's cannon!" - in terms of enforcing community standards, AoC has created a huge problem for themselves, particularly as this will undoubtedly draw in teenage boys.
If you want "dark and gritty" then you need a perma-injury / perma-death system. You don't need a black screen system. There can certainly be a mechanism to carry on a player's endeavors without having to start from scratch (such as clones in EVE and banks), but my understanding is that AoC will be yet another sugar-coated MMORPG. Sure you might get some new detailed gorey graphics, but I absolutely expect you'll be completely fine when you click ok on the "revive now?" alter.
A good current contrast is EVE - someone destroys your favorite starship, it is gone. Your character in space effectively is your ship, and at the time your ship's structure hit negative your avatar's representation on-screen is dead. Finito. A beautiful lights display. You get a pretty little escape bubble, which if you are lucky might get your pilot home. If not, clone time - and if no clone well, woops take a skill point hammering. You might be able to replace your lost ship, indeed you might be one of those delightful pirate corps who manufacture batches of ships and parts for when they lose a few more. But the one you had is stardust: your onscreen avatar is quite literally deceased, replaced by an escape pod that may very well fail to escape. Of course it's quite possible that whoever sank your ship looted the bits EVE is to me is a dark and gritty world, it has drug sumggling exotic dancers, slavery, and story lines such as NPC corporations casualy ruining the lives of millions when a ship that wasn't meant to be there crashed releasing its deadly cargo on an innocent, peaceful and unprepared poulance. Take the wrong corner (jumpgate), ignore the warning signs, and *boom* spectacular graphic of ship exploding. And when you get back to port, or wake up as a clone, you are not going to click "repair all" to make it all right as rain.
On my understanding AoC will not, at least for me, be "dark and gritty". It will be WoW with tacky bits thrown in and some more detailed blood splatter, possibly with better PvP mechanics. But you won't be blind for long, and that arm you lost in that raid will be back pretty quickly...

Particularly since this game will NOT have any porn at all? Exposed female breasts are the closest thing to it this game has or ever will have. They can't afford to put in anything more, otherwise it would very quickly tip them over the Adults Only rating. Having a mechanic for sex (which will undoubtedly show nothing more than a blanked screen and possibly sound effects.) ingame runs more along the lines of improving the immersion. Anyone signing up for the boobs is in my book a very, very sad individual.

If they did the game would get a AO rating and the government in NA and some other countries STRICTLY forbid any video game retailers from selling a game thats AO..look at the whole Manhunt 2 fiasco..as soon as they got the AO (Adults Only) rating for there gaming all countries immediately told them they would not allow the game to be sold. EVEN the US government told them that they were not allowed to continue development on it with that Rating. However, retailers can prohibit their stores from selling AO rated games and console makers refuse to license games that are made for their consoles and are AO rated. This is what happened to Rockstar with Manhunt 2. The U.S. government did not tell Rockstar to change it, in fact the government never stepped in. Retailers such as Wal-Mart, EB, Gamestop and others stated that they will not sell AO rated games and 3 major console makers will not license AO rated games for their consoles. Basically, what forced Rockstar to tone down Manhunt 2 was the fact that their product was effectively shut out of the marketplace by the retailers and console makers.
Think of the AO rating like the NC-17 movie rating...it's the virtual kiss of death.

It was the introduction of Christian philosophy that started making one a dominant number... one god, one partner, one religion. I am by no means knocking Christianity but simply stating where these ideas derived. This is all historical fact. Also you seem to misstaken fiction from reality.
