People need to just face the facts....WoW owns all, quit crying because you kept getting ganked or need too learn2play.  J/K for the posers whose sphinters tighten when you even mention that WoW is good.  Man I honestly think people come on here and complain because they WANT to play WoW, they NEED to play WoW, but instead of playing they would rather cry and whine because they can't find anything better than WoW to play.  These are the people that think LOTRO is actually good....these are the people who think "Fury" is going to wipe WoW off the map......these are the people who think Tabula Rasa has a chance.........these are the people who played alll the free MMOS and think they are awesome.....these are the people whose mommy won't let them raid at 8 oclock at night so they had to quit playing.....these are the people who blame WoW for ripping off UI's because they just...can't....find....anything else to blame on WoW...WHY???? BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT DOMINATES EVERY FREAKIN MMO RIGHT NOW!!!!!  That' why.  Face it.  Even this site knows it or it would be on the top of the rating charts...um....always.   So hold your breath folks until Warhammer or Conan comes out....or better yet....hold your breath until Vanguard actually brings in some people.

Ok, first of all this is like the augment about who came up with classical music riffs first, Beethoven or Led Zeppelin and yes your right it's a stupid question, also If anyone were to try other games beside WoW, you would find that the majority use the same UI as each other anyway.
Why is WoW so popular? far as I can tell, it's because Blizzard pretty much did the same thing WinZip did and that was mass blank bomb the media EG; magazine's, the net, and every PC cover magazine disc there was available, this is why everyone pretty much knows WinZip and gets confused with WinRAR,( I bet you even now there are readers out there, who are asking, "what's WinRAR?"
Remember when we were all awaiting the Big world of warcraft release, which seamed to be always being postponed another year?
I had a World of Warcraft desktop picture, three years before it was released. ,( I also got bored waiting for it to be released 1year before it was released.)
Blizzard has a much larger advertising budget than most game companies and the bigger the Ad budget, the bigger mob of players come to play.
until they get bored of it and come here,(MMORPG.com) or similar sites looking for something better, cheaper and with more world realism and detail, or in my case something not so retro looking, .
I believe that WoW has corrupted the MMOrpg's,( mass multi-player online role play game) into MMOplg's,( mass multi-player online power levelling games )
as for me and the UI debate, I play CoH/V which lets me customize my UI's colour and layout to what I want, so I don't really care about it looking similar to another games UI.
Just a few thoughts inspired by  this discussion and remember, if you have been playing WoW for over a year and madly defend it every chance you get, then it's time to log off and get a real life.

Same minimap, health/mana pool bar position, same skill panel same inventory same options panel position.

SO I guess we are all ripoffs from Adam and Eve then also ?

If an idea evolves to the better its not the same thing nor is it a ripoff, its then a new thing. In this case

its a 9million plus player thing.

And btw if one company "steals, copies, takes" another companies intellectual property i.e. coding, design whatever there would be legal action taken place, has there been any?
And you can plainly see by the two posted screenshots, that the one is a minimap that is not transparent to the background (WoW) and the other is transparent(Asheron's Call 2)
And if WoW stole AC2 UI then AC2 stole there interface from countless old FPS games, that had the mana/magic bar and hp/health bar on top of each other in the top right hand corner, with the spell/item slot  bar at the bottom. Same with the whole minimap idea too. So all games ripoff other games and every designer out there is "non original thinking" right?
    Ridiculous.

As I said you need be an intelligent person to see the difference between copying generic concepts (you must show on-screen character's HP duuh), the example of "every other games are rip-off" you named naïvely, and instead copying gameplay parts which the UI is the evident symbol of.

As I said most rpg's need quests, it's a staple. So me blaming the boring quests in today's mmos is not about the concept, it's about these last games copying, again to be perfectly clear, NOT the concept of quests, but the MODUS quests are given.

So it's not about UI "concepts", but UI's inner framework, that some, the brightest fellows can see being exactly the same OVER and OVER and OVER in like 15 games so far, and more will come :)

And LOTR and DDO and TR etc. etc. etc.

Not everyone can see the essence of things behind the surface, most people can just see superficial dung thrown at their eyes... i don't blame you for being average BUBS

You can throw around words as much as you want buddy, and you can try dumb me down as much as you want to. It still doesnt change the fact: THAT THE UI FROM AC2 AND WOW AND DDO AND PRETTY MUCH ALOT OF GAMES WAS THERE BEFORE IN EARLY FPS GAMES AND THAT EVERYONE IS A NOW A SO CALLED COPY AND THIS HAS BEEN THE ARGUEMENT THE WHOLE TIME!

Oh dear, i think ill start listening to madonna. She just dominates the music market. I must get all her cd's. I guess you enjoy being part of mass consuming market. As in every other business that involves ART (yes i believe computer games are much closer to music/movies/books/...) then being something on the top usually means it appeals on mass market. And as we know the IQ of an average person is 100, I rather don't wanna know how high is their critical thinking. Wow = huge adv campaign, catchy gameplay, corny graphics, rotten system below.

Yes i guess you are at Adam&Eve level when you can't see the different and bring this radiculous comparison. The idea of the AC2 UI never evolved in WoW. Its a ripoff as hell. No attempt to bring something new or progress the genre.

And yeh that 9milion argument almost convinced me you are right, but unfortunately it didnt. I don't wear the same clothes as others, i don't listen to the same music as majority and i like different movies than oscar-holywood crap.

I already demonstrated one way in which it's not a complete rip!  The round thing in the top right corner doesn't show map details!

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

Exactly, what he doesnt show you in the screenshot, is the actual minimap, which comes up in the bottom right hand corner and which is dismissable.

No you only demonstrated you didnt notice my last post about what kind of auto-map AC2 has in one of mine previous posts.

"This is a game of words. Read up carefully the post above yours about the exact definiton of radar and automap. The AC2 automap showed location of nearby enemies, nodes, NPCs and basic layout of the surroundings. You may call it automap, radar or whatever you like, but I still can't see how WoW improved that idea. WoW automap also shows nodes, enemies with appropriate skills, and the surroundings. "

to be fair though WC3 had a minimap, its a common feature with rts'. Its not that far of a stretch for them to have been added to mmos as well. Its a logical feature with the credit not really being attributable to anyone.

This thread is retarded...  So many games have similar UI, what the fuck is the big deal?  Cars have a similar basic layout, Video game controllers have similar basic layouts, mice have similar basic layouts, fuck even music has a basic beat (boom, tap, boom, tap)...  point being, if it aint broke don't fix it.  I could totally understand if you were complaining about something else in the game, but the UI?  That's gotta be the pettiest of all things to complain about.

and btw... I agree that the most popular music isn't always the best music, but Madonna?  Dude, where have you been all these years?  Madonna hasn't been big since the late 80s, early 90s.

Well im kinda completely lost in popular music. It's so crap when i hear it so im just trying to turn it off as soon as possible, not giving a chance to remember the names. And the last so popular one I remember is madonna:)

I'm sure someone has said it already but, in case you forgot, I may remind you that the WoW interface is 100% customizable in more than just the graphics.

Just had to stop in, and note...this is the funniest thread I have read in a while.

Spelling is atrocious, swearing is non-stop, and the hate is so thick you can cut it with a knife..

who cares who created what...if your having fun...then enjoy your game of choice...and everyone get happy!

    Cheers!

If Bliz ripped off everything in WoW from other games, then its a sign that their future releases won't be very innovative either.

What you're failing to realize is that while innovation and original design is important, there's something to be said for standardization as well.  Why do you think that practically all VCR's have almost all the same buttons, PLAY, FORWARD, REVERSE, EJECT, MENU, etc?  It's because people understand what they mean.  They don't have to read the manual to understand what buttons to press to get the desired effect.  This is true for video games as well.  Anytime you are in a world where you need to have a basic understanding of where you are and where you need to go you're going to need something like a compass and map.  The fact that WoW and AC2 both chose to put it in the upper right hand corner is not really all that big of a deal.  If WoW chose the top left corner instead would that be innovation?  There's a difference between innovation and simply making it different for difference sake.  Innovation seeks to make it better, not just different.  I'm not really sure of the whole outcome of the compass/radar/minimap discussion, but those things are innovation, whereas just putting in a different corner of the screen is not.  Same thing goes for hot buttons and such.  I think you are confusing the 2 things.  Blizzard did lots of innovation, but they also used a standardized layout wherever appropriate.
