To be honest, I quit after 4 months of playing because I was addicted to WWIIONLINE. That was the real reason.
However I might have not quit if it weren't for the actions of the devs of SWG. The time I quit was about a month after everyone discovered how to grind to jedi. Way before combat upgrade I think, from what I hear.
The markets were flooded with grind material, everyone I knew in the game was grinding random professions, and I was a roleplayer without a role (a ranger who sold hides to a small-time armor maker).
SWG was the only MMO I have ever played, where a casual player 'miner' like myself held the producers 'armor maker' by the balls! My casual-playing hides were so valuable, producers were begging me to sell to them, instead of the other guy. No other game is like this, and don't listen to the liars from Eve Online. I do not know how to explain the differences in the games, their economy properly. I can't explain it. Its hard to quantify. I think it has something to do with:
-you could never sell to an NPC, so either you sold them to a player or destroyed them. This sort of fixed the amount of money in the game, creating deflation, although I think the mission terminals mitigated that with inflation. In Eve, there are computer controlled corporations buying things.
-NPC's never produced anything. In Eve, computer corporations produces things.
-All items were generated by player. In Eve, computer corporations produces lots of stuff that a player can purchase.
-There were no 'quests' which generated items and flooded the market. In Eve, some players spend all their time 'questing'. And everyone knows that quests are computer generated, server generated, false roleplaying.
-There were no NPC forces which acted like the FED regulating interest rates, regulating the economy, you could actually corner the market on something. In Eve, the computer controlled corporations regulate drastic deficeits or massive surplusses of types of ores, I don't know about other things cause I didn't play Eve that long to find out the extent of this FED simulation aspect.
-Items worn down directly proportional to its use, and value. This created massive demand from players. In Eve, you can macro your mining lasers forever, in 1.0 space, theoretically until you die of old age or your computer breaks down.
See how hard it is to quantify the subtle and not so subtle differences which can have such a drastic effect on the economy of the game? Well this turned into an economics Eve bashing thread hehe. It wasn't my original intent.

I play EVE. I like EVE. I think it is a great Sci-fi game.
I can't disagree with your comparisons except for mabye the last one. Even then you said in theory. Someone that macro mines in any sec space is vulnerable to PVP attack. In 1.0 you may not see the NPC rats, but players are a threat. Sure if they attack Concord will swoop in, but I have seen it happen still. In fact there are players that spend much of their time doing this just to harass the ISK farmers. They do it with their alts and cheap ships, giving them the oppertunity to do it for a cheap thrill.
As far as the rest of the economy is concerned, i have read what the corp sells and buys on the official guide. The corp guide is outdated to the current release of the game. I also don't know if the game is designed to adjust its prices to the existing market values or not. All I can say is the corp guide prices and what is on the actual market are different. The question would be how much is the market in EVE really effected by artificial NPC corp prices. Also NPCs do not sale or buy every available item in game. Such as Tech 2 BPOs and items.
As far as wearing out of items, in EVE if you die in combat you lose every item you had with you. Can't get more wear than that. Kind of like permadeath. Its not decay true, but it does work well in EVE imo.
Overall you are correct about EVE. Having never been able to play SWG pre-cu, i can't comment on its NPC function. I started in CU and played some of the NGE.
Cheers.

I dropped the ball a few times, though the final blow was the NGE.
The first time was for about a half month before the holocrunch (~Sept 03?), though that was for personal reasons. I did still play but not as hardcore as I did previously.
Second time was in late '04 due to WoW, but again, I still logged on SWG occasionally. That lasted up until news of the CU going live (May '05 IIRC) where I started to play SWG full time again, kicking the WoW habit. The CU got better over time, IMO, and had a lot of promise.
That lasted up until the final blow of the NGE, in which I logged on for 2 days afterwards. On the second day, I found me a single 1v1 PvP battle -- myself a smuggler versus a medic -- that lasted 10 minutes. I hated the experience after the first minute of play. Gone were the free form strategies offered by the CU and PreCU experience, to be replaced with a very poor take on the Star Wars Battlefront experience. With all my smuggler goodies gone, a lot of my friends signing off on the game, no enthusiasm for the PvP that just occured, and an overwhelming sense of desolation, I logged and unsubscribed that instant.

I am a near-launch vet and I left SWG a few months after the NGE.
The reason was simple - everyone else left. That's not to say I didn't have numerous issues with the NGE, all of which have been debated ad naseum. I did. But the simple fact that all my friends were gone, cities were ghost towns and I could spend 3 hours on line and not find one other player, was strong reason to cancel. It continues to be the primary reason I have not renewed, despite periodic returns. I can see the game slowly improve in all areas, except in player numbers. I don't care what the fanbois say, there is too much game area for too few players. Some manner of server merge/ character transfer is required.
Until SOE does something to address the empty worlds, I don't see myself doing more than stick my head in every 6 months.
I'm gonna go ahead an echo what Tman5 said. It's true I have a ton of issues with SOE over the NGE and how they treated their loyal customers, but the essence of why I left is because everyone else did. I do hate the NGE and miss Pre-CU for a number of reasons. But mostly because I'm a social mmo'r and an rp'r at heart, and the NGE pretty much nuked that by pissing off the entire player base.
They turned it into a f'ing single player game. I wanted (and had) a game where people had to rely on each other. They took that away from me, so I took my subscription away from them.
Now before any current players jumps in and tries to tell me that I should come back cause the population is increasing, save it. I do actually create a trial account every few months to step into a cantina and have a virtual drink (will drinking get nerfed?) with some friends who still sub, and I know the populations are still abysmal.
Dunno why you turned on eve comparisons
But just to clarify things, npc corporations do produce a few variety of products in eve (stress the word few); and most are for newbs. And it makes sense; why should new players, who are getting used to the game, need to have a hard time getting the initial items. Anyways I would say 97% of stuff bought/sold in-game is produced by players. When I played I ran a corporation which produced and sold ships (as most corporations).
Sorry if eve has "quests". They add to the game (I didnt like it myself, but it was nice to have the possibility) and certainly don't flood the market. Also, players could get others to do tasks for them (creating "quests" themselves).
I don't remember seeing any corporation selling minerals but I might be wrong. As far as I know, eve's economy is regulated by the market. There are no npc corporations regulating major deficits or surplus.
Even though things dont wear down, you can get your ship, equipement, products and body destroyed. Where would the demand come from, if nothing was ever destroyed? I think its much better to get destroyed and buy new stuff than go repair something just cause I used it too much. And good luck mining in 1.0; it wont get you that much money; and as some1 said you can still get destroyed or have your ore stolen (happens quite a lot in 1.0 if you don't pay attention).
Do continue giving reasons why you quit swg. They're fun to read

Stopped playing after the CU. I had a Doc, Buffbot and Chef. All three professions were ruined after the CU. I cancelled my accounts when I logged back in to catch up with old friends and found the galaxie deserted. I come to find out the NGE killed the player base.
When: CU Launch
Why: CU Launch
That's about as specific as I can get.
Classic SWG > CUNGE
I guess I'm the different 1 here. I started shortly after NGE, I guess, and I left after C6 Combat Downgrade. My son left also about the time I did.
I can understand, now, why vets left after CU and NGE. My daughter had elder toons and left at NGE.
I had just gotten force sensitive the day before NGE. Thats when i quit. Im now getting into eve. great game little slower paced but ill get used to it
Started like a week after launch quit after about two months because my firewall blocked it, and I was a noob to computers so I didn't know how to log on then I finally figured it out. So I came back and played a for a month or two, right after holocrons were introduced and i made millions off them. Then I quit because my computer had then became slow and didn't feel like buying a new one :P. Tried CU and NGE i don't like them, i like the old way where it was the players that controlled everything! The best economy ever to be in a game. Star sonata has a really good economy thought!
I returned a few times here and there, but I primarily left the game in Oct. '04. JTL was uninspired, lack of direction, and the consistent bugs were reasons why I left. The community made the game for me and was why I played for so long.
SWG still remains one of the more flawed MMOs released.
Ico
Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
i gave up after 4 hours of "get on the falcon kid this place is going to blow" just give me back my game you !@#$.
same here, i left after SOE ruin it, plus people left the game in drove after that.
I left about a year after release. One of the reasons I left was the heavy hitting devs swinging their over sized nerf bats. Since at the time jedi's were unlocked by mastering professions I guess it made sense to constantly nerft popular professions. This would be a way of nudging people into other professions and eventually unlocking jedi, with out telling them how it was done. Then the whole holocron grind started, basically I could tell things weren't getting any better. As PvP came less and less fun I felt like leaving, but the crafting system was like none other. On top of all this, all the "wilderness" on buildable planets were completely covered with houses! I'm sure I had more reasons to leave a game I loved enough to play straight from release for about a year, but those are some of the points why I left.

Quit at NGE because of NGE
I've been playing since the CU, I quit after NGE, because of the NGE, but I came back and currently still play. Why? The community drew me back. The players on naritus are amazing. Oh, and also, because I wanted to be a jedi . *hides* I would have preferred to have gotten Jedi the old way (either pre-cu or cu), but I had to take what I could get. Though, seriously, in SWG lore......who the hell just wakes up uber Jedi ?
I quit in BETA after I found out the game was skill based instead of level based.
Hi Nerf..I believe I was one of your "clients" as a Weaponsmith.(Flurry server). Great doing business with you!
I came after JTL was released, ans should have taken my early problems as a sign, and left then. Back then I was still on dial-up via MSN. After installing, and DL'ing the updates, I wandered into the 'official forums' and once there I had a posting bug. So after a week with Tech support, I was finally informed, they didn't support the MSN whatever, and I'd have to use IE. I should have seen the writing upon the wall, but decided to play, and began my SWG path upon dial-up, and unable to post in the forums.
But I stayed, having fun, and going WTF every so often when a bug ate me.
Rebel M Smuggy / M WS on one server
Imp M CM / Carb on another server
When CU came I had just upgraded to DSL, and was looking forward to the faster, more action promised. Now weather this was due to me no longer on dial-up, or the CU I'll leave as a mystery. Still I enjoyed my time, and after all had a nice shiney little plaque to decor my house with.
NGE shattered my entire guild, and buddy list for my Imp, but my Reb fared a little better. Seems by chance, while looking at a empty buddy list to see if any were active, and right as my guild disolved. I was found by a big Wookie Rebel guild leader that I had met previously doing the infamous Bestine / AH GCW wars, and when RoW launched we later explored Kashyyk together. We also had a few mutual contacts in the former hide, and avian meat supply markets now empty by the loos of B-E, and Chef.
He offered me a spot as a guild officer, to help try and salvage his player community, and rebuild after the NGE disaster. Once in I met a little while passed, with me mostly in space, and helping the newer members find their way. One such was a mother of a 12 year old boy, who was seperated from her ex. Seems she came to SWG to spend time with her kid, whien the Ex had custody. Slowly as the months passed we became friends. Her divorce was pretty ugly, and she really needed a riend, so we did things with her son, and the guild lead, space stuff, Kashyyk. Sometimes we'd just sit on Rori, and let the sun go up, and down as we talked about whatever.
Then came Restuss, when they destroyed the city WE used to use to acces our city, just to create a PvP park Well it was the final straw for many. It was then that a few of us began looking for another game to tryand stay together and goto. WE chose EVE.
So long story short.
Came after JTL
Left when the Restuss disaster upset the fragile balance many of were holding trying to stomach the NGE.
Mankind is not limited by imagination, but the courage to reach....
I'm a beta 1 vet, I quit once for a few weeks when i found out there was an alpha class in the game (As im sure alot of others did aswell) but i came back around three weeks later and i've been enjoying the game since.
salute to us true vets
I quit about 4-6 months after the NGE.
I considered quitting right when the NGE was released, because I felt mislead by SOE/LA regarding the direction of the game by the Trials of Obiwan expansion (e.g. items and features for professions they were planning to delete, no mention of the NGE in the stratics chat about the new expansion: even though they new it was coming they talked as if the current game system would be maintained).
I also considered quitting at the NGE release because I lost all my mastered professions. Every single one was deleted. I enjoyed them and invested a lot of time and money to master them.
At this time also, combat wasn't working, specials not firing, or timers activating on specials, but no actual firing of the ability, heals healing enemies in pvp, rez not working etc.
And at this time, those with multiple chat channels open (that was a lot of us) couldn't move. That chat option interfered with movement and the workaround was complex.
And at this time important quests in the new expansion were bugged (e.g. storm lord boss not spawning).
Also, the interdependence of professions upon which our guild and city were built was dismantled by the NGE, leading to the death of both guild and city.
But I didn't leave. I read Mr. Smedley's letter to the community asking for feedback and explaining the rationale for the changes, I've enjoyed Star Wars since I was 9, and I made a lot of friends in the game, so I stayed and tried to provide helpful feedback and input regarding how the NGE impacted the game community.
Now, here's why I finally left. When I provided my feedback, which in my view was an answer to Mr. Smedley's letter inviting it, my posts were moved, deleted and I was even banned from posting. If I was someone else reading this, I'd assume I must have been insulting or used bad language or something. But, as many can tell you from their experience, I did none of these things, and did not break any of the rules governing posting on the forums. I simply highlighted features that weren't working, explained what people had lost, how people were feeling, and how this could perhaps be addressed. In addition to this treatment by the forum moderators, posts calling vets whiners, crybabies, and mentally disturbed didn't get deleted, despite the fact that these posts were clearly and intentionally insulting to others. This double standard that favoured the NGE direction was frustrating. The "final straw" was an article I read in Star Wars Insider. This article told people that the Trials of Obiwan brought in a new combat system that was more elegant than the previous one. It said that "grousing diehards" (veteran players) should be ignored, and that people should try the game for themselves to see how good it is. Well, I was disgusted. First of all the article staight out lied. The trials of ObiWan didn't change the combat system. This expansion came out BEFORE the game was changed by the "New Game Ehancements" (so-called). In fact many features of the new expansion were rendered totally useless by the NGE. Also, at this time, combat was still bugged, and many enjoyable combat abilities had been deleted along with their animations that in my view were truly elegant. The NGE combat was anything but. Everyone ran around in super fast mode (looked ridiculous) with a new off-center camera angle (ridiculous and frustrating, and at the time not optional) trying to use special abilities that were still bugged. The state of the game was completely misrepresented and veteran players that might try to point this out to the consumer were criticized by the article in an attempt, it would seem, to undermine the credibility of their comments. Evidently there was some kind of spin machine working overtime to misrepresent the state of the game and to silence anyone who might point out the reality of the situation.
At this point it was clear that I was dealing with coporate politics of the worst kind. I'd been lied to, lied about, silenced, and messed around too many times--and I was being charged money for this. The joy I had since I was 9 in Star Wars was turning into a sad frustrating experience due to the unbelievably poor treatment SOE showed me and my fellow gamers. I also felt that my love for a story that was meaningful to me as a kid was being abused and exploited. The game virtually emptied at this point too, and it was additionally depressing to travel across planets and look at landscapes of abandoned cities. Places where I'd enjoyed things and met new people were totally devoid of life and activity. My friend list of dozens showed 2 or 3 people still playing and they were as shell-shocked as I was.
I left SWG and won't be back to anything ever run by SOE again. They lost a customer for life here, and I know that this applies to those that number in the thousands. Also since I was so disgusted by the Star Wars Insider article, I don't buy that anymore either. Another lost customer because of absolutely horrific treatment by SOE that was endorsed by this magazine.
So other veteran players aren't "true" vets? You do realize how this makes you sound don't you?
