Sounds good that WAR will not be about mages running into crowds of people spamming arcane explosion. Guess you need to stick with WoW if you prefer instant spamming over and over and over instead of tactics.
It's obvious you never were a pvp guru in WoW. I got 11, 12 and 13 rank warriors in WoW and never had any problems with mages spamming instants. These were all those instants that made WoW so unique and attractive. And popular too. I'd say no pvp freak like me will play any other type of game after trying WoW. So WAR wont have us. And it's about millions players i'd say...
I just have to say... if we're speaking ranks you mean pre BC perhaps coz arena is what counts today. Anyways, pre BC any mage with equal 'skill' and gear would destroy that warrior of yours. Just FYI. You cant seriously be making a point with that argument... any mage losing to warrior pre BC is either 1) badly outgeared or 2) badly played. In either case you beating them is of no interest at all
I'm glad you like WoW's PvP and I hope you continue to enjoy the game kshahdo. There are also probably many others that enjoy WoW's PvP system and I'm equally glad they found a game to enjoy. Myself personally and most of my guild plan on jumping ship to Warhammer Online from WoW and it seems to me a lot guilds in The Venture Co (RP-PvP) plan on making that same plunge as well (though there is certainly no guarantee they will). Regardless of if they do or don't, Warhammer's success won't be measured by the number of subscriptions it steals from WoW or if it ends up a larger MMO than WoW (it likely won't be larger than WoW IMO). Though I'm unsure of the number of boxes they need to sell to re-pay for the start-up costs or the number of subscriptions they need to maintain the game for years, I'm pretty sure they will reach that goal and make their shareholders happy (which is all it needs to do in order to be a success).
As to PvP, I don't care for and have always hated the jumping around in combat. I've always prefered collision detection to be turned on (back from the day of UO - Felucca) and the loss of instant spells is likely a non-factor. The additional strategy & tactics needed in Warhammer combat (compared to WoW) and how differently the character classes are to perform are a huge draw for me and many other people. As a roleplayer (who enjoys killing people), I also happen to like the lore / setting and how the game is designed with the greater war (pvp) in mind (the public quests..ie pve is also a huge plus). Even the way in which your character changes (outside of gear) is also an interesting aspect to the game and while it certainly isn't revolutionary it is neat enough to help me to consider the game.
If the game doesn't sound interesting to you, fine nobody said you had to like the game or go out and buy it. Run a long back to the WoW forums and enjoy your game. With Warhammer releasing it won't effect you one bit.
Hate to break it to you but games like Legends of Mir 2 have far more subscribers than WoW.
And actually, WAR will most likely take a small percentage of players from about 50 different games, so again incorrect. On another note, WoW Pvp rankings in no way have anything to do with skill so I don't know why you would use that argument for anything. It was just another grind implemented by Blizzard.
Man, dont mix up a Korean/Chinese free online games market with a western MMORPG market. I didn't realize that you had made rules about subscription numbers before you blurted out a very incorrect term about WoW being the be all end all of MMO subscriptions. And L2 was not F2P, it just had a very minimal subscription fee. Ohh and why would I not include the Korean and Chinese markets when they make up a good 1 million WoW players.
And thats another evidence you werent a great pvper in WoW - no good WoW pvper could ever say Honor System had nothing with skill... I knew alotta examples when freshly made 14 rank teams just destroyed honor farming premades... Note that you just said 14 rank TEAMS. Well in my experience any team working together will spank a group of pugs. Not in all cases, but in many.
Ohh trust me, I'm great at PvP. I just don't think that a grind for honor ranks = skill. Any monkey (present company included) pounding on a keyboard that puts in a few days can gain ranks. There is just no arguing with a FANBOI. I really hope you just stay away from WAR because it could use a slightly higher intelligence in its player base than you have exhibited on these forums.
I feel that instant-cast spells can work well, depending on the game, but are not necessary, again depending on the game.
It mostly has to do with pacing and melee vs. ranged effectiveness. The fact that spells are not instant-cast usually is a balance factor to make up for being able to do things from a great distance. If you can run around and cast spells from 30+ yards away, then either your spells need to be really weak or melee classes need to be very strong, or something will not be right.
I do not mind buff spells being instant as buffing is...annoying, and should not take long. I also do not mind small utility spells being instant, either, like a spell to, say, levitate. But, nukes and healing spells being instant...I cannot see this working well in most implementations. I hated things like Arcane Explosion and Moonfire being instant in WoW, as then you get a bunch of people jumping around like idiots spamming these instants in combat. That always seemed incredibly dumb to me, since even in a fantasy game this did not seem realistic enough.
No books I have read or movies I have seen have retards jumping in eight different directions spamming bursts of light every which way. However, I also thought the same thing was wrong with melee. You should not be able to run and jump while swinging a massive axe and still do full damage. I'd love to see someone handle a weapon while strafing and jumping away from an opponent.
maybe, but seeing as i refuse to read 60 more reasons people have thoughts on separate topics not related to this one, I'll just go ahead and say what i think of the OP's ideas.
Forget the damn auto-cast spells. Do you really want to put up with four other mages all casting auto-spells at you for who knows how long until you're a pile of smoldering ash? I thought so. So let the company make the game they believe is right, and pray to god that if they do add auto-spells that they are not devastating and/or have a higher cooldown time to compensate for the quick spell shot.
------------------------------------------------------------ Admit your faults, you have them like everyone else. Admit your fears, and you can then overcome them. Admit your infatuations, and build your courage to confront them. Know what you hate, and build competence towards them. Live like this, and grow to be successful and happy.

There is no autocast in WoW. Sure, you can macro something, but WoW pvp is a very interactive, because your opponent always got some countermeasures against almost all your actions. Thats why you must properly react on every his move. You cant just macro all your spells and auto-cast them if you wanna win...

I've been playing wow since release, and just decided to quit playing around a week ago. I've obtained rank 12 at 60 and have played at a 2k+ arena team at 70 ( I'm mentioning this not to say "oh look at me, I own!", I'm saying it to let everyone know that I'm very experienced in wow gameplay.)
I plan on playing WAR, the classes seem fresh and interesting and I hope it to be something to fill wow's shoes for me.
Anyways, on to what I wanted to get to. Everyone saying wow takes "no skill" and such really don't have much knowledge about the game. People saying that either never reached the highest level or never took the time to fully understand wow pvp, their class, and other classes. I'm not saying that everyone should do such, I completely understand not wanting to take the time to learn something that you don't find interesting. From what I've gathered, most of the people bashing wow seem to have experienced wow gameplay at lower levels, which I, and what I've heard from many others, is inferior gameplay compared to other MMOs. There exists way too many class imbalances at lower levels, due to low quality gear and a lack of endgame spells and abilities. At lower level, it also almost takes no skill at all to succeed, it's mainly all based around what class you are, and what gear you are in.
Fast paced gameplay by no means equals easymode gameplay. Mages speccing Arcane/Fire throwing out an instant pyroblast seems to be the common "WOW MAN, WOW TAKES NO SKILL LOOK AT THAT BS, MAGES = OP" complaint. Sure, speccing Arcane/Fire on a mage, and doing that, is probably the easiest route to go for an inexperienced player, but that doesn't mean it's the most effective playstyle. For instance, in Arenas (the most common place for pvp, if not for BGs), if a mage were to throw an instant pyrobloast (6 second cast, but can be instant with a spell gained from speccing arcane with a cooldown) at someone (assuming at a higher arena rating), it'd probably take off around 40-60% of that person's HP (considering it crit), and it still wouldn't kill the person. You can go ahead and throw in a blastwave, fireblast, arcane explosion right after it (all instant cast spells), and you may find yourself winning. But that only means the other team's healer doesn't know what he/she is doing, or the other team was too incompetent to kill a fire mage relying purely on damage rather than a mix with defensive abilities. That's just one example, feel free to throw other scenarios at me.
It's all about reaction time and knowing what spell/ability/item to use at the right time. Like the OP said, almost every class can some way counter another's ability, making it very challenging at times, requiring you to use all sorts of keybinds.
I felt I needed to defend a game I played for the past 3 years, go ahead and tell me I'm wrong, but please give an explanation/argument to it.
Like I said, I quit wow. Not because of the pvp, but because of the grindfest Blizzard gives it. All they want to do is just make you waste more time to get gear that isn't going to improve yourself that much. This applys in PvP and PvE.
If yes then, well, I very doubt there will be alotta pvpers who move from WoW to WAR... As to me that's for sure. I stopped to play WoW but I wont play any other game not having WoW pace and drive...
Honestly, I'm glad for both you and EA Mythic for doing this. Serves to actually show skill and positioning for casting. Rather then a mage just being able to use instant spells to get away and do damage it will mean that some sort of planning and counter-measures will be in place to allow balance. And I'm glad you won't be coming over because spells in most fantasy settings weren't just something that can be instantaneously brought into existance...usually requiring at least a few seconds of chanting some incantation or drawing a mystic sign in the air. Fits in with the theme.
Blah, now that makes me feel bad. Cause (Though I put it on halt) my PnP RPG was going to have the ability to ready like 2 spells instead of having to chant them. (Once time use) Though they do have to chant them prior.
Siehst du mich Erkennst du mich Ganz tief in meinem Herz ist noch ein Platz f?r dich Ich suche dich Ich sehne mich nach dem was ich geliebt hab doch ich find es nicht
So your deciding factor when looking at a new game is whether or not it will have instant cast spells? You can't wait 1 second or 2 seconds to do something?
Yes, exactly. And yes, I can wait. It's my opponents who wont be able to - they just will kill me...
And the main problem (not for me but for Mythic) it's not only me who thinks the same way. Competition, you know. I dont think EA will be very happy if WAR will become another EverQuest with half a million subscribers...
Thats assuming (WHICH YOU ARE!!) that WAr will have the same mechanics (which it won't!!) as WoW, think out that box man, if you can, that goes for alot of other people.. think out that box thins game will play unique, as do all good games.
maybe, but seeing as i refuse to read 60 more reasons people have thoughts on separate topics not related to this one, I'll just go ahead and say what i think of the OP's ideas.

From what I understand it doesn't have them... and will play more like DAOC than WOW. My son tried DAOC after playing WOW for a year and he disliked it for the same reason.... hated having to stop moving to cast spells. Its just a personal preference, and a person who learned their PVP on WOW first (like he did) probably would dislike this system. Doesn't mean everyone will, and the problem is easily solved by playing a Warrior.... just smack em with your big axe..... or.... don't play WAR.... see....plenty of good options.... BTW, I'm sure if Mythic got at least 500K to 1M subs they would be satisfied.... (not thrilled mind you...but would still call the game a success) But OP, please don't call yourself hardcore PVP if WOW is your barometer...all your ranks mean is you blew a lot of time in the BG's...you could have reached those ranks losing more than 50% of your fights.... hardly a proof of prowess I assure you....
Arena's are skill. There's no reward in arena for "time put in". Unless you are cheating or abusing... a top arena rank is very hardcore.
I've been out of wow for awhile now, but last I heard 90% of 2v2 and 3v3 teams had a warlock and a healer of some type. Maybe perhaps 5v5 is somewhat skill based, but still wow pvp doesnt really require skill to obtain high rankings.
On a side note I played DAoC for a long time and left to play wow when guild started playing there. It was a nice change. Needed something new and fresh, especially after all the grinding for scrolls and such for ToA and lvling artifacts. We tried to make the pvp like DAoC by running around high lvl areas as a 5 man group looking for other 5 mans. Didnt last too long mainly because not many did it and competition sucked. What I liked about DAoC was I could take a month or two break come back and still be competitive in pvp. Wow, you take a break or cant devout hours and hours a day of playtime and you have no shot at being competitive.
Wow, you take a break or cant devout hours and hours a day of playtime and you have no shot at being competitive.
I'm assuming you're referring to the gear they introduce into the game with this. Otherwise it sounds like you're saying that it takes more skill to play WoW PvP.
--------------------------------------------- I live to fight, and fight to live.
Couple questions for the stopping to cast fans who seem to be WoW hating. Have you played WoW and how long? yes, 2 years
Can you name me a mage that one shot kills everything he sees in PvP? There were a few that could 1-2 shot just about anything. Are mages the only class in WoW that have instant abilties? no, but they are referring to ranged DD's with instant damage abilities. Arent melee moves in pvp instant? most, there are a few that have timers...but heres the difference with melee...I have to be right on top of you...dont I? You don't see Ranged DD's running INTO combat on purpose, unless they have a suicide wish...
AND HERES WHERE THE DISCUSSION GETS REALLY stupid....-> "Well no one can swing a 200 pound axe on the run in Real Life!" derrrrrrrrrrrrrrr "Well no one can shoot fireballs out of there fingertips in Real Life EITHER!!
Done yet?
But mainly...and lets be honest...All instant abilities will do in this game is make you very over powered if you stand behind a line of tanks...or have you forgotten about CD?
I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad, The dreams in which I'm dieing are the best I've ever had.

meh lol you just proved my point. If 90% of the 2v2 top teams are warlock + healer... then most matchups will be warlock/healer vs warlock/healer. So... mirror matchup with same gear (coz everyone in arena top has same gear) what is the deciding factor? I'm gonna guess 'skill' . And ye maybe abit of luck might win u a few fights too

Thats assuming (WHICH YOU ARE!!) that WAr will have the same mechanics (which it won't!!) as WoW, think out that box man, if you can, that goes for alot of other people.. think out that box thins game will play unique, as do all good games.
There is no autocast in WoW. Sure, you can macro something, but WoW pvp is a very interactive, because your opponent always got some countermeasures against almost all your actions. Thats why you must properly react on every his move. You cant just macro all your spells and auto-cast them if you wanna win...
WoW pvp is like the special olympics. Sure its fun, fun for 'special' people. But even the best 'special' athlete couldent hold a candle to a standard athlete.

I think your post is 'special'. Maybe even fun for 'special' ppl
I'm assuming you're referring to the gear they introduce into the game with this. Otherwise it sounds like you're saying that it takes more skill to play WoW PvP.

I live to fight, and fight to live.
Couple questions for the stopping to cast fans who seem to be WoW hating.
Have you played WoW and how long?
Can you name me a mage that one shot kills everything he sees in PvP?
Are mages the only class in WoW that have instant abilties?
Arent melee moves in pvp instant?
AND HERES WHERE THE DISCUSSION GETS REALLY stupid....->
"Well no one can swing a 200 pound axe on the run in Real Life!"
derrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
"Well no one can shoot fireballs out of there fingertips in Real Life EITHER!!
Done yet?
But mainly...and lets be honest...All instant abilities will do in this game is make you very over powered if you stand behind a line of tanks...or have you forgotten about CD?
I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad, The dreams in which I'm dieing are the best I've ever had.

Ich suche dich
Ich sehne mich
nach dem was ich geliebt hab

meh lol you just proved my point.
