It's not NcSoft that wants this game released in October, it's Lord British himself. He needs money for his space ticket. NcSoft will have invested nearly $100M and nearly eight years in the Garriott brothers and this game. I don't think you can call that stingy and impatient--but likely the NcSoft was foolish and will take a disastrous hit while RG is joyriding in low earth orbit.
Where do you get the $100Million figure from? If they actually HAD spent that much it would show it, and not be the gilded turd that's about to get flushed down the pan
So far I rate it a high 7 or so.... maybe a low 8.... hard to say it's too early really to rate it. I'm just starting to get into it. Once I have a bit more experience with the game I'll have a better idea.

I would link you to the article in the Korean times, but they have taken down the link because it is badly embarrassing NCsoft that they spent such an unbelievable amount of money on such a smelly piece of poo.
You can still find the 404 link to the article here:
It was stated in the article that "NCsoft had spent Hundreds of Billions of won over the last 6 years and were desperate for the game to be a big success"
100 billion Korean won = over 100 million US dollars.
The game is a piece of crap moneypit that Richard Garriott has used to ripoff NCsoft Korea.
NCsoft will be swallowed by SoE in less than 2 years, Crapula Crasha is going to ruin them.
Honestly, I dont think that the situation would be so easy to explain. It just seems too absurd that all what Garriot had in mind was to ripp off NCsoft Korea. There is much more involved I'm sure and the thing why I feel so sorry for Garriot is that it's been quite a while for him to have some success showing up and I assure you that he was working hard and desperate on his project. This cost him pure life essence.
Though sometimes when I read earlier statements about TR it already seemed a bit like:
'Okay, this won't work how we imagined it... let's make it atleast an enjoyable game instead a new godfather of the genre.'
But then again it seemed like:
'Dammit! We have a super creative team, all good people, we are working hard. Let's do this right now!'
In the end nothing comes out but an unsatisfied fanbase, soulbroken developers and grim business people getting their next bypass op. To me that spacetravel for 'tourists' thing Garriot has going on is prolly said some balm he is clinging to. Sure there's a lot of money involved but Garriot is living in a different world when we talk about pocket-money. He should let that thing go or let someone else take care of it and get some time off to set things straight and purge all the ill-success from his cerebellum. There is little doubt that he is one of the few people in the computer game business who eventually _could_ do it right but if shit happens like, just as an example, your own name being put over the title of the game (Richard Garriot's Tabula Rasa....) it doesn't really help getting your head free for creative stuff neither would it take away some of the insane pressure developers usually have to deal with.
At the current state of the industry only new and fresh people would ever eventually be able to finish that truly great product we are all longing for. Either that or an insanely professional staff of coaches and psychotherapists for those developers who have already been around for a while. My personal cure was Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards and no, I'm not a painter, I'm a programmer....
Perhaps the page got taken down because the news article was total shit. Did you ever thnik that? The most expensive game to date is Vanguard at 40+ million dollars to make and that game tanked hard. There is no way NCSoft would have supported a decision to push 100 million on this game. They would have cancelled it at 30 million and cut their losses.
I continue to be shocked and amazed at how low some people's standards are these days. Amid a sea of accurate and well deserved 4s and 5s, there are still some people claiming 9 or 10??? It's like the guys that can't admit Vanguard, or Roma Victor are bad games. It is pretty funny though, to see people be such hardcore fanboys that they don't mind looking like the village idiot, extolling the virtues of a game that is otherwise getting universally poor reviews.
This game is a turd. Great concept, terrible execution. As much as i would like to see a developer properly merge FPS and MMO gameplay, this isn't the game we were waiting for. It is playable, although It isn't very fun or rewarding. I'd give it 4.5. I can't imaging paying for it, much less paying a monthly fee to play it.
If you really need a sci-fi MMO, there are better ones out there. EVE, SWG, AO.... as bad as those games are, they are all better than TR.
Id say 5.5. Im in agreeance with the "good idea. poorly executed". I think they need to merge the idea of this and Planetside and make something that has it all. Intercontinental wars with tons of different bases, base defenses, maybe missions and quests based on captured areas. some worthy crafting system implemented. a variety of vehicles, aircraft, and maybe, as ive read elsewhere, logos is only available to certain professions. maybe come up with a worthy substitute for the pure chaingun bearing screaming bullet spraying maniac. Unfortunately, I also doubt this game will acquire what it seemed rather close to having. Despite my graphics card being owned by this game, so i could only run it on low/normal. Plus I'm only up to level 10/50, so theres still a lot i have to see, but i cant help feel this game has sacrificed a lot, and as a result, theres not a great deal left other than to sit around admiring what the graphics should be like, waiting for things to appear, then taking them all out on my own. If i had to decide what to pay for, id probably decide to go for EVE

I would jump right back in bed with AO if the treadmill got some love. Leveling from 1-220 in AO has got to be more abrassive than the experience in Final Fantasy XI. I know WoW is going to adjust xp rates in WotLK to allow faster leveling from 1-60. This is an example AO should follow to bring more fans into the mix. Most people get turned off on the game because leveling is so damn slow.
Anarchy Online and I have had a love-hate relationship since its launch back in .... 01? God, has it been that long?

Yeah not to mention it looks like crap and it's boring, but it's no big deal.
What the hell do you expect? The game is 6 years old! However, I still find myself amazed at some aspects that have aged well in the game world.
Agreed, I never really liked AO, it was always kinda boring to me, but I was happy for the people who did like it. One of my friends got into it, not really my thing. I was pretty surprised to hear SoR is shutting down, I mean, it wasn't ever THAT popular but it had some interesting mechanics, and made for a decent game I suppose. Again, not my thing.
But to look at those games and to look at where this game is now, it's hard to say that this game won't make it. There are a lot of people who consider this game "their thing". Now it's not as though I'm going to put all my eggs in one basket, but really, I have nothing else to play, and even moreso I have nothing substantial to compare this too. (as in games I'm currently playing). I am so, ridiculously bored with everything else that to me this game looks like sunshine. And to some of you that may not seem like much because you're wrapped up in your orcs, elves, or wookies, but thats kinda the position I'm in right now.
Haha, man I either completely agree with your posts, or I scratch my head and wonder W.T.F. is he coming from with that post. I like you man; you keep me on my toes. Moreso than a lot of other naysayers here.

Heheh, I'm glad you're at least paying attention, a lot of the time I just throw something completely unbiased out there that has nothing to do with anything or is extremely hard to argue with. It sounds good, I like to use big words so it makes me sound more official. At least it seems your one of the only people who get it.
If it was a single player console game I think it might rate 5.5/10 but as it is it's a very poor excuse for an MMO and it just isn't anywhere near the game I would have expected after this many years of hype.

if they've blown 100 mill US$ on this, NCSoft Korea should pay the russians to push garriott out the nearest airlock once he gets into orbit.
I wonder if I could interest them in a bridge?

Think I gave it a 7.0 before beta, Now after playing it in beta for a while 4.6.

HAve to give it a 1.5 out of 10 I am dissapointed to be honest.
