A little info, I am in my teenage years (no not a 14 year old blonde sorry predators) and I enjoy classic rock and 80's rock, old movies and occasionally old games. I also seem to know some stuff my generation wouldn't normally know about, such as the movie Citizen Kane, the song kickstart my heart and I am currently into the original Warcraft for a bit.
Today on the bus to school this girl asked to hear some of my songs on the mp3 I was listening to. There was no Kelly Clarkson, Akon, John Meyer, Gwen Stefani or any of that stuff. She told me I had no taste.
I don't know why, but this just seemed to get to me. What the hell is wrong with having my own preference that isn't a fad? Frankly I like songs for more then 3 days and I don't consider them old after that long. I know there are more in my school who don't like rap and pop, but they seem to not reveal themselves.
So tell me, do you think in this day and age, it's not socially acceptable to be into non-recent stuff? Am I really the only one?

Personally I have a very wide variety of musical tastes, old and new.....
it's just my opinion but...
those that have "no taste" when it comes to music are the ones that ONLY listen to radio fav's/top 100 (or whatever)
just my 2cents, hope it helps

Nothing wrong with you, aside from being easily influenced by older people ....
None of those people are musicians, the are corporate manufactured entertainers. Nothing but cash puppets. . .
Enjoy your own music. . .

It's much healthier these days to be influenced by old people than it is to be influenced by young people.

I agree with everything posted so far.
I had the same experience in Junior High. Some hot girl wanted to see what was in my portable CD Player and was suprised to find it was Jazz or Classical(Can't remember which). However, I remember her being more impressed than anything else. That is probably because every year American Kids are getting dumber and dumber. Just take a look at that joke-of-a-show: Kid Nation. After all the crap the network took about safety issues, I figured the show really would be a good look at how Kids would handle themselves in a Lord of th Flies situation. After watching the first half of the first episode, however, I was more than happy to delete it from my DVR and give up on the show all together. The show's staff did everything but tuck the kids in. So much for Lord of the Flies.
Anyway, it is very obvious how immature kids have gotten just from watching 30 minutes of this crap. I may not remember exactly how I acted at 11, but I definitely didn't act like these 11 year olds.
Personally, I think someone is ignorant if they ignore the classics. I also think someone is ignorant if they ignore pop-culture. My DVR has 15 or so movies saved on it currently that I intend to watch. Everything from late 30s-60s John Wayne movies, to Charlie Chaplin, to Murder on the Oriental Express from the 70s. However, my Netflix Que is filled with at least 20 movies that came out in the last few months as well as some older stuff. My Sirius Radio pre-sets include 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s-Now, and a top hits station that has everyone from 50 Cent to Bruce Springsteen. Hell, I even have the Broadway station pre-set. My MP3 player mirrors this with songs from Fortunate Son and Paint it Black to What I've Done and The Way I Are. I realize I am showing off a little here, so I'll stop. My point is that being stuck in the past is just as bad as forgetting it. Do yourself a favor and mix it up. Just stay away from reality tv.
Today's teenagers are responsible for a "great depression" in the entertainment industry. Movies, music, games. All of it horrible since 2001.
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.
Because you write well, and owing to your eclectic tastes I'd say you're probably far more intelligent than the average person. So get used to not being able to talk about some of the things you'd really like to with most people. It's a lonely world out there (at least until you get to graduate school or in a profession, into chess club, Mensa etc.).
But until then, if you were truly smart you'd feign interest in whatever that girl was interested in just to get under her skirt. Or into her heart if you prefer. Intellectual discourse is fine, but don't confuse it with something that's even more rewarding.
I've heard quite a lot about the show. And I wonder how one would go about creating this "Lord Of The Flies kinda situation" in a TV show...
BTW, if you want to know how kids govern themselves in reality here's a little tip!
Oh, and I try to find my thing in contemporary music and I fear I can't find it. Music that is. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough?

When she told you that you have no taste, you should have told her, "Yes I do, I have my own taste. Not a preference someone else told me I should have."
Although, I do kind of dig Gwen Stefani myself. WOW!!!
===============================
Interestingly enough, I'm reading Lord of the Flies for my English class. I guess in a way in mirrors people I know, and sometimes myself.
Also, not to say I don't like some of today's stuff. I do enjoy bands and singers like Green Day and Justin Timberlake.
I really dont see that problem where i live, everyone likes what they like. Actually the majority of people that i see listen to all the 70s 80s and 90s music except for a few people. I like it alot because its so diverse and what you mention rarely happens.
I think the problem with todays kids and generation is everyone is so ignorant and hypocrytical, i have a friend who calls some other kid ignorant and all that stuff what he doesnt realize is he thinks he is right no matter what you tell him even though you can prove it with facts he will still think he is right and as you are talking to him telling hes wrong he wont even listen he will just keep repeating no until you stop it pisses me off so much i just cant wait until he leaves high school and sees the real world. And i also believe that everyone now is taught that bullshit of being a leader and all that well the truth is for every leader there must be followers and people just dont understand that and they keep fighting about what they believe until no one is left except for them. IMO we should teach kids that you should try to be a leader but sometimes you just have to settle for less and never be afraid to stand up for what you believe but also look at things from the other point of view. Its not the fact that the kids are spoiled (they are in a way i admit) but its we teach them wrong, most kids dont have common sense or dopnt listen to others they are all ignorant.
Listening to older music isn't wrong, but that certainly is.

I think that in this day and age you'd be hard-pressed to find something that isn't socially acceptable at least somewhere. The real question isn't whether or not your old-school interests are socially acceptable but rather whether or not Elvis could swing his hips to Black Bottom.

AHHH!!! I'm so pissed now!
I was doing a project in science, and I got paired up with these 2 dumbasses as if that wasn't bad enough. In attempt to make fun of me, he asked what kind of music I liked.
Me: Rock
Him: No rap?
Me: Occasionally
Him: Dude rock sucks it's just a bunch of yelling
*Head Explodes*
I have to say though, I tried gnome's suggestion. He just went "pffft".
face+hand
Then make him listen to Guns n' Roses "Paradise City" until he can understand the words.
That just means that he was speechless and in awe of your keen wit.

Salute and thumbs-up to both of you.
The girl has no taste is perfectly normal and boring. You on the other hand....have style, sucka!!!
The rock-hating morons in your science class are neo maxi zoom dweebies... and probably communists.
I'd contact the Dept. of Homeland Security and have their anti-American pinko asses hauled off to Gitmo where they belong.
in response to the music issue
i am not nessesarily a fan of the old stuff, but im kind of in the same boat as i listen to a lot of music that (it seems like) no one else listens to. I usually just joke about it, not a big deal, and i have converted many people to enjoying some bands i like
pretty much, as long as your happy, who cares what everyone else thinks
side note: anyone else feel like when a band gets popular/mainstream they cant listen to them anymore? maybe im just wierd lol
Honestly, even though there are some songs I find amusing, or I like the beat to...rap and hip hop has got to be about the most tasteless and talentless music out there over all. I can't stand most of it...nor would I let my children listen to the crap.
With that off my chest...screw those other people, they wouldn't know taste if it stabbed them in their left eye.
Listen to everything, keep what you like. As much as I hate the rap and hip hop industry, there are some songs I like. These get added to my collection. I also listen to classic rock, modern, lots of punk, some metal, goth, I love classical when I'm writing. I listen to big band/swing and Jazz.
The point being, pretty much all music has its value. People who only listen to the canned crap that's on the radio these days are limited in their appreciation of music. Get out there, sample it all. And learn to find underground stuff, heh.

Have them watch this!

I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.
No, i don't think it is socially acceptable to not be in on the latest stuff... society seems to be so obsessed with image and fame and being "popular" or "mainstream" that anyone who doesn't conform, unintentially mocks their shallow idealism and therefore gets verbally mocked in turn.
Fuck em.
Who cares. Just tell her the opinion of a skank matters not to your superior intellectual mind.
