CONSOLE VS PC DEBATE....again

XaldorXaldor Member Posts: 236

Just thought you guys and gals might like to know that the new consoles coming out in 2005-2006...specifically the XBOX2...will basically be pc/consoles, with a mouse, keyboard, high end graphics card, the ability to play PC AND consloe games, a TIVO-like capability, DVD writer, internet capability, etc...etc...etc...All for the low price of about $599.  (note xbox2 will not confirm or deny the price or what the final product will look like...but if this comes to pass, we will all be playing our favorite games on the XBOX2 orPS3)

All I have to say is count me in....Check out gamespot and do a search on DARK SECTOR, and you will see what the future of gaming is...holy freaking sheeet.  This trailer is not a cutscene, it is what the actual gameplay will look like....comments and flames welcome...Xaldorimage

PC will always reign over consoles, because as the years keep going by more and more consoles get emulated to pc, so dont know if consoles will ever really catch up they would have to make a HUGE leap in order to get past a PC

I'm not saying they will surpass PC's...I'm saying they will BE specialized PC's made exclusively for gaming...and with a TIVO feature at that.  Also they will be around $599.  Show me a high end gaming PC for $599, that can record my favorite TV shows, and I'll by it tommorrow...Xaldorimage

    PC beats consoles. Hands down.

There may be times, where a new hardware generation may challenge pcs for a while, but because of a way higher customizeability and a wider field of application PCs will - on a big scale - dominate consoles.

Some consoles may be compatible to the internet, have certain programms and hard drives, but that'll always be a neverending race to be like a PC without being one. When I was young and didn't know jack about PCs it seemed sooo easy to just put a Cd/Cartridge into a console and play, that was my only reason to play on consoles then.

I know this is an issue where 2 sides will yell their arguments at each other without getting to an answer. Just decide how you feel about it and be happy with it. Having been standing on both sides over time my choice is clear.

    Whoohooo, I love this debate.

PC will always reign over consoles in what way? As a gaming platform? Not true, consoles outsold PC's in the gaming industry last year.

  • XaldorXaldor Member Posts: 236

I also love this debate....and what people here are still not understanding is that the next-gen consoles are going to be a PC with a mouse and a kb...plus controllers, headsets, and HDTV compatibility...Also microsoft plans to allow users to PLAY PC GAMES, as well as console games.....so there will no longer be a debate due to this one fact:  $599...end of story....Xaldorimage

PS is always better than console. The Xbox for example is just another PC just is only able to play XBOX games. The PC Can always play games, and media, and cd's, and music., and u can build ur own. The console will get boring really quickly, and dosn't have an interactive surrounding like the PC. Bwah Bwah Bwah... The pc is better.

And the Gameboy is the best selling console ever. I guess that makes the Gameboy the best gaming platform. image

Sorry but did you even read my last post, and the original post.   The XBOX2 (not the XBOX1), will be able to do all of those things and more....IE record live TV like tivo...we're not talking about the current consoles, we're talking about the NEXT_GEN consoles...Xaldor

I guess it just depends on what criteria you are using...

If you are using units sold, then maybe so.

What you are not realizeing is that what you are saying is that consoles will develop into PC's.  Look at what will be required and come with the "console" of the future; you stated keyboard and mouse, it will require a dvd/cd burner, to be HDTV compatible is really no great feat, Computers output bandwidth for the monitor has always been far beyond TV's input and as well computer graphics cards come with outputs for TV as well as inputs for them.  While we are on graphics cards, on consoles as well as PC's there are to be quite obvious, the same.  Also if they are to play PC games they will require a hard drive to store all the data, b/c running a game from a optical drive(Dvd/cd) is way to slow and will become memory intesive if it is all done from the optical drive.  As well it will end up requireing a user interface to adjust what you have installed as well as all the "nifty" "new" things for a console such as recording and what not, which is to put it bluntly.... an OS.  If you don't know what and OS is it is a operateing system i.e. windows XP.(dont want the console freaks getting confused)  In all inteseive perposes a console will end up become a prepackaged PC with the same hardware for everyone.... which is what they are now.

Yeah and the PCs always stay the way they are... ::::29::

Consoles will become PCs and with the additional hardware as expensive as PCs...where's the problem?

Tivo for the computer is nothing new. Better yet, there is no monthly fee when you let your comuter do the work.

    http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/ptech/10/08/tv.recording/

Plus, only computer games made using XNA (which must be licensed from Microsoft) will be playable on both the computer and the X-box2. The plus side for computer players is most if not all X-box2 games will be playable on the PC (using Windows of course).

And lastly, unless you invest a big chunk of cash in an HDTV, computer games will still look much better than a console game (and even with an HDTV, computer graphics are still superior).

In the end, it comes down to what you prefer, and most people will end up with both types of systems anyway.

Very good points....I give you the tivo thing, and the XNA point...Just so everyone knows, I have a PC, and I love it for many reasons...That being said, I would prefer having all of the features that I've stated earlier in one simple "BOX".  A console goes right underneath my TV in my entertainment center, and whenever I feel like playing I just turn it on and go...With my PC, I have to sit at a desk and stare at a considerably smaller monitor, and hope that the game has no bugs and crashes my desktop.  You must admit that 99.999999% of the time, console games work properly and do not crash....Xaldorimage P.S.  and no-one can debate the cost difference...no-one

The Xbox2 looks nice and yes, it will be a hybrid. Not a bad entertainment system for $599.00 either. I think I'll stick with my PC because I'm willing to spend more money and get a higher end system than what the Xbox2 will offer. Plus, I would have the ability to upgrade and mod more than I would with the Xbox2.

Another thing to consider is the type of games that will be available to play for the Xbox2. I'm sure you'll have very good fps, rpgs, action and sports games, but what about mmogs and mmorpgs?

Don't get me wrong. I like my current Xbox, and I might even get an Xbox2. I just love my PC more.image

XBOX and PS3's will most definately have MMORPG's.  In fact the PS2 has FFXI, which doesn't really appeal to me, already.  When the next-gen consoles come out they will have a mouse and kb, so all MMORPGers will be comfortable with the controls.

I'm not trying to get everyone to sell their PC's here, I'm just excited about a high end gaming platform for $600.  And yeah after a couple years they will probably won't look as good as their PC counter parts, but they won't cost you 2-4k either...Xaldorimage

ill be honest, if consoles used a mouse and keyboard, and got more online games, id say they're better. the idea that you dont have to upgrade them ever (forget about the ps2 hdd), they are alot cheaper than a pc, and that you have alot less problems with them, really appeals to me. but, with the pc i can use a mouse and keyboard, play good games, surf the internet, download demos for free instead of renting games, play games online easier, play alot more games online, download patches for even single player games, etc. that and upgrading could be a blessing. if a part breaks, its easy to replace. if 1 part breaks in a console, you have to get a whole new 1.

    final judgement: PC RULES!!!!

Consoles are for people who have more money than they need. Or they are skinflints who think they are too smart to buy a 'compooter'. In the end these skinflints end up spending more for their consoles, their "NEW & IMPROVED!" replacement consoles, and the games whose prices are ,initially, contractually controlled by the console manufacturer.

The only console I ever bought was the Intellivision.

only thing negative I have to say is this.  First off i'm not a fan boy of any game system, it's just the XBOX pissed me off when I found out you had to buy another adapter to play DVDs.  Now is this how the XBOX 2 will be?  Will it be capable of integrating all of this together but be sold as a stripped down model that only plays the games?  Will we buy the system at $300-400 and then be expected to pay $400-500 more in additional hardware to get the full benefit of the game system?  I understand they need to make money, but it's getting ridiculous, I mean back in the old days, you bought a NES and you got Duck Hunt/ Mario Brothers games.  Now you don't even get a game bundled with the system.

The fact of the matter is, if your a MMO fan such as myself that likes to play online games, or massively multiplayer, you gotta go with the PC.

The PC rules the world of MMORPG's. They tried to make everquest for the ps2, it simply didn't work. They did a replica of FFXI for the ps2 owners, and much more prefer it on the pc.

I gotta give props to the PC. Not only does it have good MMO's, but the First Person Shooter games such as farcry and counterstrike, make the console a joke.

    - Consoles are also limited to certain upgrades
    - Console games are somehow linear and always family/kids oriented and usually devs focus on coop/sp in console games because thats the main use of consoles.

Just about everything is designed on a PC. Even cars...

MMO games are slowly coming to the consoles. XBox Live would make an MMORPG rock!

Hate gamepads? Thats OK, use a joystick, or a steering wheel...

Consoles have the ADVANTAGE of not needing to be upgraded.

Co-op gaming on one machine is an advantage. Consoles are a lot of fun to get a group of people to play. And they don't have to bring their entire PC setup with them to do it.

Not all games are linear. Morrowind is on the XBox. Cannot be a less linear game...

check out this link everyone.....more MMORPG's are coming to consoles...I know that you elitist PC gamers will probably scoff at this...but IMHO, in 3-5 years, there will be more console mmorpgers than PC players...Xaldor http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/06/16/news_6100768.html

Console games would be fine except that you have to play them, or generally play them on a low res television set making them suck.
