on topic guy you earned the right to take a break but there's othing else out there like this game. sure, you could try to find a player run server but nothing is current like EVE online. if you find yourself getting mad, hating manstream MMOs, you know its time to return
ive drifted for a few months to get caught up on console games and even try offline Space games but nothing could replace EVE online I keep hearing the music int he back of my head. it makes no sense but I miss EVEMon and I miss the music lol

Actually I've posted this thread 6 months inside my break and I returned to Eve in October. Yes, it's the best MMO out there, and single-player space games fall way short too. The main point of this thread was a frustration at not being able to earn massive ISKies for fancy T2 ships, like HACs, Recons, Commands; hell, many ppl even have personal Capital class ships.
So, I'm in Eve again, trying to have fun and not be bothered too much by the fact that I can hardly replace a lost HACs (HACs level 5 miserably wasted) and 1 bill fitting for a HAC is way out of my reach.
I'm skilling up to fly covert ops partly because I don't like losing ships - no matter what they cost. Also, covert ops is going to be excellent when the Black Ops BSs come in - they should be able to secretly create cynos for them. Scouts can be in their own special squad in fleet battles due to the interface changes. Covert ops will get even better when ambulation occurs - findings will be relayed to the FC's map.
I'm doing the same as Jack... I'm covert ops and its fairly affordable. I just had to fit a "cheap" raven for station killing and it cost me about 200M isk..... that was a bit of a bite...... can't imagine a 1billion fit.....
But I am working on a plan to start making about 1 billion ISK a month starting in January.... if it really works I should be able to afford more stuff... (still not going to throw away billion ISK ships though)

The main thing that keeps me away from EVE is the necessity of joining a Corp. I get enough of dealing with people in life. When I play MMOs I like to be self-sufficiant and play solo. I know, you'll say it's multiplayer. I play the way I like and I just want a persistant world with other people. I just don't want to have to rely on them to be successful or have them determine how I spend my time in game.
Basically I'm saying that the economy in EVE generally requires that you have a Corp to back and support you. Going alone is not really an option for the endgame.

I left EVE in the summer, for the simple reasons of A) money and time needed for RL things and C) i was stuck between two worlds, i was bored with the repetitive grind of mission running, but lacking confidence to conduct pvp, having heard about the isk sink that it is, and i agree with the OP about having decent corporate and industrial backing, i managed to find a corp with a decent industrial strategy, but i was already on the slope to leaving.
What people should really say is "There is no grind in eve...if you are clever". I fly Command ships, always techII and faction fitted, a very expensive habit.
I only PvP. I dont have a serious alt of any kind. I dont do any form of grinding.
When I am low on isk, I socially engineer a billion or two out of a carebear in empire. I love doing this. Its not a grind or boring in any way. It requires creativity and skill. Eve is the one game where literally ANYTHING you are good at can fund your pvp: you could make forum sigs for isk, you could host TS servers for isk, there are even many groups who will pay ISK to hear you sing on teamspeak! There really is no limit.

Wait- you flew an HAC??? I thought they were only 17mil isnt that easy for a vet to earn?
I'm working up my trading skills and marketing. I'm hoping I can get to the point I make a lot of ISK fast to replace an HAC.
oh- fittings? I've never purchased a fitting im such a noob still. feels great though to be a newb so much to learn. so much to explore. so many mysterious and stuff to see

I love to hear this thats what I thought too. I made good ISK from doing fun PVE stuff like marketing and trading and playing the market.

Yes, if HACs would cost 17mill, I'd fly them all the time. It's more around 60-80 mill, as in itself it can be replaced by 3 days of level 4 missions (not too much playtime either), but you can't fit HAC like crap, you have to buy good fitting for it and that would double (at least) the price of the ship. So, in the end we have around 160mill ship. Lvl 4 missions, unless I really grind them give 20-25 mill per day, it means more than 6 days of missioning to replace 1 lost ship. For me it's too much, so I'm still trying to figure out some clever way to earn the ISK. The goal is 100mill per day, time will tell if I'm successful in this.
I started playing EvE in 2004 ..I have found that a single account is a tough road to walk ...I have 3 and with them all going (3 puters also) I can make huge sums of isk but it is work and can burn you out. I have a pure miner a miner/production & a mutt all these chars are well over 30 mil in sp I also have a pvp account I don't like to mix my money making chars with my pvp char ..and yes T2 is costly .......but I like to win so I put the best on my ships.... there are many ways to mix mining & mission running salvage & production into pure isk ..but to do it on 1 account for me would be much too frustrating .......
I know someone who has six accounts. EvE is all he does. I'm getting concerned.
Well, I can afford inties, af's easily. The problem starts with HACs and their setup. I have friends who fly HACs with setups that go more than 1bill (incl .implants). Pretty hard to compete with that. But that is not the point. I'm not talking about that staff. Those guys either have a mining alt or 2 with Hulks in 0.0 or an indy alts with T2 BPOs. I'm just interested how you can get 30-40 mill per day ratting in 0.0 (my fault, you're actually talking about 100mill per day)? I was able to get around 5 mill/h on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the rats, 40 mill will make 8 hours of ratting. Man, it's looking like a job. I've never had patience to rat for 8 hours straight. Actually I rarely had that much time to play Eve non-stop. So, I try to earn ISK here and there and 80mill + fitting for HAC is still expensive for me. It's like 10-14 days of ratting and that's a lot. Of course if you can rat for hours straight, good for you. I'm talking as someone who is trying to balance fun with ISK-making when I have some time to play Eve.
Erm.... ratting in a -0.5 or lower truesec system you will make around 20-30, sometimes 40 million isk an hour, not day. Easily. Do you loot? Do you salvage? Do you Chain spawns rather than wiping them out? Chaining spawns you can easily get a system up to where you just have a bunch of really nice BS spawns. I don't bother ratting any longer as I use my wife's account to run level 4 missions in empire now. But before she played I would usually rat 6 or so hours in any given week to keep myself in ships. Then again I don't die very often. Fortunate in that regard I guess.
"A ship-of-war is the best ambassador." - Oliver Cromwell
I don't rat atm; I run lvl 4's in empire when I don't PvP. I have time to run 1-2 missions per day, which easily keeps me in small T2 ships, but not enough for T2 cruisers.
1st I want to make it clear that this post is not Eve bashing. Eve is a great game and it is possible that I will return after 8 months long hiatus. Eve was the best game I ever played (both online and not). I spent 2.5 years in game moving all the way from Empire dweller who was afraid if he saw neg. sec. player in high sec. space to someone who played the game for 0.0 PvPing and alliance warfare. Eve has the best combat system I ever encountered in mmorpg and I tried WoW and GW since then. Nothing even came close. But the title says "why I left", so I'll stop with praising Eve and will start with things I didn't like. In one word the reason why I left is - economy. Yes, Eve economy that's praised by many (and may be rightfully so) was the main in-game reason for my subscription being canceled 8 months ago. Eve economy is harsh and unforgiving and I've wasted 1bn ISK with a stupid investment. It was frustrating, I didn't realize it right away, but even after I realized it, I've got over. It was not the reason why I left. The reason was the inability to compete in PvP with players that were around me at that time. Yes, I could've gone to gank n00bs in low sec or something like that. But I've fought the best and saw one very frustrating thing - I can never be THAT good. After you grasp the basics of Eve and stop making stupid mistakes the thing that matters more and more is the ship and the modules (also your implants). Gradually you will move from frigate to cruiser to battlecruiser to battleship. Then you will move to Tech II and it's where you'll get hit. Interceptors and assault frigs are fun. But you are developing skills for bigger and better T2 ships, your skills aren't developing fast, but your wallet will lag behind your skills and eat the dust. I don't know how the market is built nowadays, but when I was playing I've got very close to things that were out of my reach. I've found myself in a middle of a fight I couldn't win - a fight with my wallet. How can you economically support your char if you strive to fight in a ship that is worth 250mill. Most modules 10s of millions. How frustrating is to see ppl around you in very expensive ships, using best modules available and you're still fielding out those cruisers and choking over the loss of a battleship. I came to a conclusion that by no means I can compete financially with those guys and it was a final straw. The bottomline is, that in order to be really good in Eve (I mean later stages) you have to build your own financial empire. I failed at building mine. Don't tell me that 0.0 ratting does the trick - it doesn't. I've done it a lot and it's a boring repetitive and fruitless activity. It will not give you enough ISK to afford PvP T2 ships (except frig class maybe). Probably mining with mining alt. will be enough, but I didn't have alts, or T2 BPO, but I wasn't lucky enough to get it. After all, I've surrendered to ISK and left.
Bingo. What I've been saying all along. Eve is a coin collecting game. Whoever has the most, wins the game. Isk gives the ultimate end all advantage to everything, because even if you're better, they can still win out through attrition. Sure, you might be able to shoot him down 99 times out of 100, but you can only afford to die once , and he has enough isk to back him up for as long as he wants. Who ends up losing in the end? The guy who lost 30 ships but still has the isk to field a million more, or the person who could barely afford to field one or two, and lost one ship.
