News - Urinating in games - EA first on the scene

Posted by Ryan Dean at 06:17:19 PM EST on 11.15.2006.

Electronic Arts has always been an innovator. In fact, they're also the kind of guys that tell you when your game is innovative (Gears of War has zero innovation, y'heard?). To prove that they are willing to push the limits of game design and bring new, fresh concepts to the industry, Vander Caballero announced in an interview that the next-gen, cooperative play focused Army of Two will feature in-game peeing.

Deciding that realistic graphics, audio, and solid gameplay would not be enough to create a truly immersive experience, Electronic Arts decided that if players want to drink in games, they are going to have to accept the consequences.

Caballero also alluded to the idea of controllable urination, rather than the act be appearing a small cutscene.

    Will this new feature make
Army of Two a 10/10 game? You'll have to wait for our review sometime next year. But seriously, can a game that allows you to urinate freely be anything but fantastic?

Update from Richard Brownell: Yes folks, we know this is not the very first game to have peeing in it. However, this is one of the first, if not the first, realistic war/army games to feature peeing as a gameplay mechanic. Also, the reason for Ryan's sarcastic tone in the piece is that an EA higher-up accused Gears of War of not being innovative a mere day before this was revealed. Though it does bring up a good point; what DO the Gears of War guys do when they need to take a leak? Clearly CliffyB has a patch he needs to implement."

    ..........

Seems like peeing is popular!!! Even with the Devil.

well the video is doing well with over 7k hits (youtube) so far! with a further 5k elsewhere! and alot of people finding it funny and humourous.

Im not sure if I should make one with the Demon (SoulEater) and his private parts flapping about, wouldn't want to offend him!

Yea saw this a long while back... its GREAT... PERFECT for a Hyborian port lol ... drunk bum takes a leak... these guys make the world pretty authentic if they fill the game with NPC's with such behaviour.... Hybiria is no Magical Fairy Princess Kingdom lol

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Nice video, but do you honestly consider urinating lore? I mean come on, stretching it a little far don't you think? Urinating is... urinating. If however, I am wrong, and urinating plays a large part in the world of Hyboria, then my apologies. Aside from that, great video.

It's authenticity to that reality.  I hope this isnt the only NPC which behaves [or misbehaces, rather] in Hyboria in such characteristic ways which set the feel for the world.  It's there to get a reaction out of you.... much better than the dummy npcs of most mmos which just stand there like giant pez dispensers for quests.

Besides, anyone who can't laugh about it is way too damn stuck up for their own good if you ask me.

I was hoping you'd show some PVP or something heh interesting link. I guess keeping it will add more character to the game so we'll see how it goes hah

One of the small things that'll make this game awesome.

Don't find that in your World of Warcraft, now do you?

I am amazed they spent the time to animate an NPC urinating.   Let's hope they also show him getting a drink or he'll just have this endless supply of urine every time he cycles.

Why is that amazing? Its no more or less of an effort than any other action he could be doing.

Oh, and yes you will be seeing NPCs drink, getting drunk, and further actions based on the consequenses of the first two, not to mention eating, working, sleeping, getting laid (or rather going in and out of a brothel), stealing, getting arrested, etc.
