WoW is still the best

ShazzelShazzel Member Posts: 472

Well its been a few years and WoW is still the best by a large margin, even a year after TBC its still a top selling game.

The real horror is I hate the game but keep going back because its SOO much better than everything else. They might as well remove the rest of the games from the list on mmorpg.com since 85% of the mmo US market is WoW.

Whats next a WoW movie!?!...oh wait..

BTW, Halo movie comin out too can't forget that, but I digress.

85% of the US market aye? Really wow, i'd like to see support for that gross overestimation rofl.

None the less subscribers doesn't mean it is quality it just means it has quantity (Mass marketing) Hell Maple story trounces WoW's subscriber numbers, so shrug does that mean Maple story is better? No it doesn't but hell by your reasoning it does.

Maple story is free to play WoW is subscriber based, Im sure if you added up all the WoW accounts there ever was (not just the current active ones) it would far supass Maple story accounts, considering WoW was 8-9million active accounts at any 1 time right now.

And 85% i would say is a good guess.. take just WoW western subs of around 3 million (as of the march press release http://www.blizzard.com/press/070307.shtml) and compare those to EQ2 estimated 250k subs, we dont realy know but it sounds right considering EQ2 has 20 odd servers supporting 3,000 players at a time.

Again we dont know what % of the MMO market WoW has buts its easily over half and probably closer to 2 3rds or more.

Subscription numbers do not mean a game is the best or better than any other game.  That is a completely subjective arguement.  If that were true, then LOTRO would be 4 or 5 times better than EQ2, which is laughable.

I'm sorry that you haven't found anything better than WoW yet.  You will...I did.  Don't get me wrong.  WoW is a fun game and I loved playing with my guild, but the devs have taken a wrong turn in most of the content that has come since release.

I disagree. I find that the newer content is much more entertaining. The levels take longer to get through, the quests have better rewards, the gear is more interesting. The landscape is more fascinating and more fantastic too. Overall I feel that BC has more punch in terms of visuals, story, immersion and gameplay than the original content.

Do I believe that WoW is the end-all, be-all of MMO's? Not remotely. But it's better than anything else I've tried in the last couple of years.

I'm curious about the game you found that you feel is better.

Just because more people play a game that doesnt make it best (well in half the cases it does) .Tbh id prefer to play a mmog with 200k subs that has a nice, mature and helpfull comunity rather than play a mmog with 9mil subs who has a immature, anoying community wich is mostly composed out of gold farmers, kids who havent hit puberty and worse, old man more immature than 10 year olds.

Seriously ive being in some guilds in WoW were the kids were more mature than adults, there was one instance were 2 +40 year old guys were swearing, threating eachother etc. for a T1 helmet ... it was hilarious but extremly sad.And just for the matter, ive played a ton of mmogs and being in a ton of clans/guilds/corps and ive never met found them even remotely as bad as some of the guilds in WoW.

Eve-Online is a good example of this.

The real horror is that you continue to play a game that you admittedly hate.

There are other games out there, and they are quite fun.... currently I'm enjoying EVE for a change of pace....

But seriously, if I hated all current MMORPG's out there...I'd go find something else to do....but I'd never continue down a failing path just because that was the only choice I felt I had....

Don't be a lemming man... get out there and find something fun to do.

As for WOW being the best...obviously best != most subs, best can be measured in so many ways.... and certainly WOW is right up at the top in some categories, but there's many areas that it is completely deficient in and why I no longer play the game.

That's what makes me so sad - that a game like WoW is one of the best we have...

I hope 2008 gives us something worth playing I really do.

The WoW I knew and loved died. Either that, or I just moved on.  The thing is, it seems like all the games I want to play aren't out yet.  Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa (I actually like this game ZOMG), hellgate: london  and of course the top two games I'm looking forward to are Exanimus (www.exanimusthegame.com) and the White Wolf-World of Darkness MMO.

At least I will have hellgate to play soon...hopefully.

There was something about WoW, though, that kept me playing, kept me occupied for 1.5 years.  The game was easy to get into, had tons of people playing, and seemed to almost perfect all the common aspects of the mmo.  You see, WoW was not innovative, revolutionary, or anything like that.  It did however, take systems already instituted by other successful MMO's and perfected or nearly perfected them.  Of course, the problem here is that WoW is now on the top, and new things are expected to be released.  THEY are the trend-setters now.  Oh, and I believe most of the original World of Warcraft team actually left Blizzard.  I know a number of them left to form Carbine Studios.

I kinda think the future of mmo's rests in niche setting games.  Horror/"dark" game fans like me can play a zombie mmo, a vampire mmo, or some kind of survival mmo.  I think the general sci-fi/fantasy setting mmorpg's are becoming a problem, as a lot of developers feel limited in choices for game content.

Have you really played EVERY other game?  I have my doubts.  What about the old ones that have been slowly improving for years and years?  Have you thought about giving them another look?

    mmhhm, he did.

WoW's community does have more of those kinds of people, though.

Of course that is expected though, it has more subscribers than any other p2p mmo.  You see Mr. Airstrike, since there are 9 million people playing, there are going to be more assholes and immature brats.  But if you were to scale down the ratios of everyone playing WoW to more common mmo subscription numbers, I'm sure it would be considered normal or even lower than other mmorpg's.  Personally, I think the WoW community is overall pretty good.  It's nothing compared to some of the stuff I've heard and read over in MxO,  CoX, DAOC, Vanguard: SOH, and especcially Guild Wars( though it is a f2p mmo...you still gotta shell out 50 for a campaign..and theres 3 and one expansion out right now, so I included it.)

WoW is still popular because there is nothing else that has come out that's actually worth playing. If you like carebear pvp then play wow. Once Aion releases  I will say byebye to WOW forever

I've heard this argument a lot here on mmorpg.com.  But I have a few problems with it.

1.) WoW is not pizza..or food for that matter..it's a game..with the SAME subscription cost as most other p2p big mmo's.  Money is one of the key reasons you see more people buying dominoes and burger king then you do people going to 5-star restaurants for dinner. So, the only reason to play WoW over other mmo's is because you like it better.

2.)People argue that WoW is only popular because it has Blizzard's name on it.  Hell, then by that logic, SW:G should be the most popular game on the planet!  And anything SOE spits out should be amazing!  And Lord of the RIngs Online should be outselling WoW and beating it in sub. numbers, too.  Yes, Blizzard's name may have helped WoW a bit at first, but if it really was crap, then it would have died out ( see SW:G!)

I disagree. I find that the newer content is much more entertaining. The levels take longer to get through they should its going from 60-70 it would only make sense that the further you progress the longer it takes to gain levels.  They should have made it longer in my opinion., the quests have better rewards relative to their level I wasn't that thrilled with any of the new rewards, the gear is more interesting how so?  Sockets? . The landscape is more fascinating and more fantastic too I actually prefer Azeroth to Outland.  I only liked netherstorm which I thought was really done well. Nagrand was okay too, but Blades Edge, Hellfire, and Zangarmarsh are 3 zones I absolutely hated.  . Overall I feel that BC has more punch in terms of visuals, story, immersion and gameplay than the original content. We can agree to disagree.

I havent touched WoW for about 6 months now, so I dont really know where the game stands now. Once I found out that they were releasing another expansion, I let me subscription expire cause now I find it useless to play since they will be raising the level cap and all the grinding I was doing in the game wasnt actually going to benefit me. Apparently it Burning Crusade all over again and its a damn shame that the old world Raid content is dead, I assume outworld will suff the same fate.

Will I buy the new expansion, I sure will, but at this point its so premature to say if I will enjoy it. Apparently the WoW graphics are definetly getting dated compared to the new MMOs out there and I still was never a big fan of the WoW graphics compared to the existing fantasy mmo's out there now. I think I just put up with it since I was endulging myself in the game for long periods of time.

WoW to me was a great game for what it is, but I think I have moved on from that type of mmo. At this time, I dont even have WoW on the brain like I once did, they are so many other MMOs coming out that look promising and I hope some will be more innovating and fresh.

Currently playing SWG, Eve and Guild Wars and enjoying my time there. Good riddance to WoW for now.

OP success doesnt mean that necessarily something is the best.

WoW is the most succefull MMO out there, is it the best? far from it.

The reason WoW has this success is because of the blizzard logo and warcraft name. That way it managed to pull gamers into the MMO genre that were completely ignorant it even existed, add to that the popularity of internet the last years and u have two of the biggest reasons wow is so succesfull.

In terms of quality though, after having tried both games i would say eq2 does the pve part much better than wow, and games like shadowbane and DAoC do the pvp way way better than wow, hell in my opinion almost every game out there has better pvp than wow. Why? because their pvp is meaningfull while wow's pvp is just another form of grind

As to why WoW is still the most succesful game? its simple: no games have been released since wow which are any better than wow is, vanguard was a major fluke and Lotr offers the same enviroment type wow does.

U should repeat this thread after games like war, conan and aion come out, although i still dont think they will top it but i guess only time will tell

WoW - polished and simple gameplay which appeals to the masses

this does not make it a great game....just a very well made one. i played it on and off for 8months, while its made very well....i would hardly call it a great game

What about an argument that WoW is a mmorpg britney spears? Music CD's have the same cost and I think it's obvious for all of us that britney is not best music composer/singer on the world just because she sells the most CD's.

Yes it is popular just because there's Blizzard name on it. It lured all the newcommers into genre that never played other MMORPG's before so they couldnt really compare it. That's why majority of old-school players avoid WoW and plays their previous game or jumped into something new not as mainstreamed as WoW.
