Actually, they don't OWN the IP... they lease the rights to publish games that use Wizards' D&D IP. It's closer to "renting" than to "owning." And for each campaign setting, they pay additional rights. For instance... if they make something generic D&D (which under 3.0 and 3.5 has been Greyhawk), then they only pay for the basic D&D license. If it's Forgotten Realms, they pay for that in addition to the D&D license. This is probably why you see no big portal-hopping game that jumps around to all their different campaign settings... the licensing fees would be tremendous. Oh... and if Atari goes out of business (as has been predicted for a while)... who will hold the D&D license for computer and console games, then?
Yeah, I do think a DragonLance MMO would be a lot of fun (so long as it's not set in the Age of Mortals -- but during the War of the Lance era).
Of course, I wouldn't be for it if Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman did not have a respectable level of control over the writing and continuity. If those two were on board, it would be quite something.
Not to knock the many great game writers out there... no offense intended... having professional, worldwide recognized and beloved writers on an MMO staff would truly bring about a new level of quality in games and perhaps up the stakes and competition to raise quality across the board.
I know some games like Everquest II have brought in big names (Christopher Lee and others) to do voices for key characters in their MMO -- which is a nice touch.
But, ultimately, that doesn't affect the overall gameplay and feel of the world. Having top-notch writers respected by the very game players, would be something to really tip the scales. Famous voice actors only affect gameplay when they're in the story, then it fades when they're not there. Great writing affects every aspect of the story.

Which one??? as far as I understood (at least when I read it) was that there were technically (emphasis on Technically) two wars of the lance, the one where the legendary hero Huma wielded the dragon lance, and then there's the one where the lance is reconstructed during Tanis's (and companions) time. As for the age of mortals, are you referring to the very last ones where the elven nations are finally reunited and takhisis is finally defeated? (man those last three books gave me the creeps, incredibly dark by comparison.)
It's still too early to have any games built around 4th edition. WotC is still busy polishing up the final rules for their release (next May I believe).

I honestly hope it's an SW MMO because I really want a good sci fi SW MMO to play. I feel compelled to try out SWG again, but I refrain myself by playing KOTOR 1 and 2 in the meanwhile so I don't do something stupid and resub to SWG.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no hoping required. BioWare's MMO will most definitely be KOTOR. I feel completely and utterly confident in this. There is no way it is anything else.
Notice... the LucasArts/BioWare Interactive Product is listed under New Next Gen Game... and the use of the world "interactive" might infer a Nintendo Wii title... since that's the most interactive system out there unless it's for an upcoming system or will utilize new computer technology for interactivity (virtual reality? *chuckle* we wish!). Does next gen infer Direct X 11 or higher? Requires a GeForce 9 series or higher?
Then again... being an "interactive" might actually be more of a children's game or something completely different. Assuming this is KotOR 3 is only setting ourselves up for a letdown.
Though, BioWare rarely (have they ever?) works on projects that aren't RPG-related. So, your guess is as good as mine until they make a formal announcement as to the nature of the project.
It could be an Indiana Jones MMO...or an American Grafitti MMO...
Lucasarts has many MORE properties than just Star Wars...
True... true...
But one of my good friends is a four-time Indiana Jones author... it it was that, he probably would have mentioned something was in the works... hmmm.... but you certainly are onto something... perhaps an Indiana Jones RPG? Not an MMO... we can't ALL be Indy (but then we can't all be Conan in the Age of Conan game, either ).
American Grafitti isn't likely of course *chuckle*
Perhaps "Willow" ? hmmm... get Ron Howard to come back and oversee it? Get Warwick Davis to come into the studio for some CGI recordings.
Or... oh, no... dear almighty... say it isn't so!!!!!!! "Howard the Duck"!!!!! Noooooooooooooooo! Oh... wait... *whew* just remembered... not Lucas' intellectual property... we're saved!!!! Yeah!!! And there was much rejoicing.
I don't know about an Indiana MMO lol, running around in brown hats, tatterer clothes and and overpowered whip ftw ? Sounds different atleast. Honestly though, if they make a Kotor mmo I would play it in a heartbeat. Bioware makes excellent games.

I was referring to the War of the Lance from Chronicles (Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning). And if the world lasts long enough as an MMO, it could then progress in the Time of the Twins (Legends).

Yeah... the DragonLance comments were just wishful thinking. We know it won't be DragonLance.
4th Ed: True, but if you've read Star Wars RPG Saga Edition, you know quite a few of the system changes that are coming in D&D 4.0. Let me just say this... game play is MUCH faster... my PnP groups have been playing this system for months and we like it better for the most part. Not all change is good... but overall it's good.
They've already released D&D Minis promo cards for 4th Edition. The game is completed... it's just undergoing the final rounds of playtesting (and no, I won't tell you where I heard that from *mouth sealed, blocks his e-mail with massive redundant firewalls*). Playtesting has begun for those of you lucky enough to get an invite (providing you were a D&D Insider subscriber). No... I didn't get the invite *chuckle*.
I believe the RPG Design R&D department knows the system well enough and is sure enough of the core concept behind 4th Edition... they've already begun electronic avenues for implementing 4th Edition. It's much closer than you realize. Most of the changes to come will probably be minor other than major upsets from fans who find previously-unseen flaws or breaks in the new system.
Though, BioWare rarely (have they ever?) works on projects that aren't RPG-related. So, your guess is as good as mine until they make a formal announcement as to the nature of the project.
Shattered Steel and Murder Death Kill 2 (MDK2) come to mind...but those were in Bioware's early days and they certainly haven't worked on a non-RPG in a while.
They are currently been printed. Release is may 2008. WotC is busy working on Monster Manuals if I am right, but it could be something else.
I am pretty sure that the MMO is: Dragon Age. Last press release is what? A few years old? It get AWARDS as best E3 in 2004 if I recall well. Never canceled, never give much news. A RPGs would be done by now. If Dragon Age still doesn't release in the next few months, it is rather obvious it is the MMO.
But...I would honestly have wishes for a Mystara, a DragonLance or a FRs MMO. Yet, anything with BioWare is cool. And no, it won't be with LA!

They just recently sent out playtest packets for 4.0 ... I don't think they're printing the rules just yet. But they will go to press soon. I work in the publication business and sometimes the work is all done but you never send it to press until the last possible moment (and still have time for distribution) -- because you never know what mistakes you might need to find and correct before publication.
Dragon Age isn't an MMO. It's a multiplayer game just like NWN and yes, it's still in the works. Dragon Age is being produced in Canada at the Edmonton, Alberta, facility -- not in Austin, Texas.
Neverwinter Nights was in production for at least 5 years. Dragon Age was slated for late 2008/2009 last I knew. In addition to all the engine development, and game design, BioWare had to spend time to develop their own world and intellectual property. The main time-saving factor will be that they are doing it all in-house and won't have to send proofs to Atari/Wizards of the Coast or to LucasArts (as with KotOR). So, though the initial development time took longer, the process should go faster since it's their own intellectual property.
Also, I've seen the name of the lead writer for the BioWare MMO is Daniel Erickson. There is a different writer in charge of Dragon Age.

I agree. Once Mass Effect is out the door and in homes, the focus should shift to DA.
There's tons of information on DA over in the forums... the lead writer and other developers have been working hard and listening A LOT to fan input -- which could be a really good thing. They're trying to get things into the game that players are looking for.

Yeah I know it's all wishful thinking, but that would be an awesome game, although I don't know how the Time of the Twins could be done, or at least the final chapters where Raistlin became a god. But in any case, I'm sure some developer will see the potential of dragon lance and make it into an MMO. At the moment I'm waiting more so for another SW MMO and hopefully Bioware will be the one to develop it. I know the speculation seems to point that way, but I won't hold my breath until they make an official announcement, I don't want to end up disappointed if it's not.

To be honest, I think your sig pretty much shows that you DO have your hopes up about what the MMO will be. And for the record, I think it will be KOTOR as well. However, don't fool yourself into thinking you're not going to be disappointed if it is not KOTOR.
Not to get too far off-topic, but for those of you who "just want a scifi MMO" because "there are too many fantasy MMO's" out right now or who "don't care if it's SW as long as it's a scifi MMO," don't forget about Star Trek Online and Stargate which are both in the early stages of development.

Hehe ouch. Yeah I played in the Beta for TR and while I had high hopes for the third person shooter in an MMORPG style, I wasn't impressed at all.
In other news, MASS EFFECT is released tomorrow... so I hope in the next while we will start hearing about BioWare's other games like the LucasArts/BioWare team up & the MMORPG [Here's hoping they're one and the same. ]
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

Not to get too far off-topic, but for those of you who "just want a scifi MMO" because "there are too many fantasy MMO's" out right now or who "don't care if it's SW as long as it's a scifi MMO," don't forget about Star Trek Online and Stargate which are both in the early stages of development.
or Tabula Ra...bwahahahahaha, sorry I couldn't keep a straight face

There's just no excuse for games like that. I award that dev team no points and may God have mercy on their souls.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
