Nudity, positive or negative?

StellosStellos Member UncommonPosts: 1,491

I understand that AoC will be intended for mature players; however, will nudity hurt or help keep this game more role-play based and keep immature players out or will it attract them?  At first I was not happy to see that nudity would be a part of AoC because I started thinking of the perversion of a game that Second Life has become with the nudity and sex theme.  But I do like the fact that it is going to be a bit more hard-core of an MMO.

Exactly how far do they plan on taking the nudity aspect of this game?  Will it stop with breasts?  On this note, I love the fact that the gore will be high because this will help keep the younger kids from playing who typically are the cause of bad role-playing.

What's your guys opinion?

First of all, its breasts only, no genitalia, no sex scenes.

Secondly, I don't think its that simple of a question, that is to say positive vs negative. It will hurt due to various hormone addled kids (whatever their printed age) buying it for the sake of jacking off at pixelated tits. It will help in terms of the more responsible parents and game stores keeping minors from playing. It will also help in terms of more mature people gravitating away from the fairyland kiddy games that are interested in the overall environment that makes up the Hyborian world. Unfortunately, it is damn tough to tell which factor will have the most effect in the end.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I sure hope that Funcom puts in as many stops as possible for a kid to play this game.

Whats the big deal with nudity?

If the players can handle blood and violence....well.....nudity comes a long way under in the "offence line".

IT never made much sense to me either, but that's the world we live in. Graphically chopping off someone's head and playing football with it is fine, but graphical representations of a nude body is not.

We in Germany get boobies in tv at breakfast and softcoreporn in the evening..

but do never show gordon freeman shoot antlions! if you cant avoid that, at least let all corpses vanish after 1 second and make blook grey. zombies are not allowed to make any noise when set on fire and scientists in hl1, once "dead", will just sit on the ground, shake their head, and then go *poof*.

    Cool, eh? ;)

    Nice.

Then we all can agree that blood and nudity is good for AoC. It gives it a much more real feel to it since.....Conan (lore) have a lot of blood and nudity in it. Therefore is would be strange to not have it.

AoC is rumored to have simulated sex

MMORPG.com has learned from a reliable source at Funcom that characters will be able to have sex and will receive a buff for the action. That is not to say, however, that there will be explicit sex in the game.

Characters going into a room, the screen blanking out and having a few sexually related audials is not the same thing as a sex scene. They are not going to be showing sex in any form in this game, they do not want to be slapped with an AO rating, hence the no explicit sex comment.

anyone who thinks that the "Mature" content combined with the current release date of around the time when school gets out isnt related doesnt know a thing about promotions.

The nudity, the mature sex theme, will only add to the kiddy factor in this game because it will make it cool to younger kids.

It is definately , absolutely, positively a very bad thing.

It looks cool for adults too - you know the intended market..

Yet again, 10 threads in discussion already last few months, either you like it or you don't its as simple as that.

    The Mature MMORPG list includes:

    .......

    .......

    .......

The online market for mature games compromises of 15% of the total sales in N.America for example. Its not been done properly in an mmorpg before. The average buyer age of an online PC game is 33 yrs old, the average age of the members on the official forums is 27. Most of these stats are comprised just for N.America - European stats are just as similar. All available from the ratings board governing said continents. This game will have kids in it, but really no more than any other game.

March 25th is just before the easter holidays, many family's and the average working adult have a day off at some point. What about the other 3 mmorpg games due for release the same time? Release date is not just tied in with kids school holidays.... jeez.

Lastly take the MATURE THEMES  out you dont have a CONAN game. Then I don't want to play it. Its this difference from other games that make this game more unique, its a quality more than a negative imo. I am fed up of playing graphical clones.

At least there this game will (by the looks of it) offer more substance than just tits and blood. Infact you can easily see it does.

The answer to the OPs question is that it wont be positive or negative.

The representation of breasts and possibly NPC peeing will indeed bring in people who are a bit challanged when it comes to maturity. But these will be the same people that ran around EQ typing "puts it in your mouth" and the same people that you see in WoW dancing on every mailbox in the world. Will they be annoying, sure, but we have learned to tolerate or at least ignore then in most every other game.

And yes, of course the devs know that nudity will bring in kids, reguardless of what the box says, but i am also hoping that the more complicated gameplay makes alot of them give it up after the boobies wear off. They will get the initial sales money off the kids though, which is probably a good thing for their wallets.

Same goes for chopping of heads and other gory deaths. People will flock in just to see them but when they find out that these deaths dont occur all that often it will lose its flair. It will probably lose its awe affect after you have done it a couple times, still will be cool hacking off a head but no longer what it was the first time.

I'm over 30. Pixelated mammary glands, even with all the fleshy details in, are not that big a deal. Seen, touched, etc enough of the real ones to know they're far, far more interesting.

As for gory violence..meh. Not that big a deal either. Frankly both items will attract an inital crowd, but the game's gonna have to have more than that to have staying power. Hopefully it will.

I believe it depends on the context of the T&A, well, the T.  If I'm exploring the world and encounter a group of ruffians who have taken prisoners, and some of them are women who have been stripped and given only loincloths to wear, then yeah go for it.

But, it does have its time and place.

If it becomes more gratuitous than actually adding to any sort of story or atmosphere then it really doesn't belong.  And the same goes for the gore.  If I have some ability that allows me to sever an artery or something, then I would like to see a pool of blood at my feet.  But, if I punching someone with my bare hands and blood is spewing all over, then again it's unnecessary.

As far as the kiddies are concerned, us old folks remember what it was like being their age.  If we wanted to do/play/say/read/listen to something, we found a way.

    Currently Playing: Nothing...I'm developing.

I find it hard to believe that people will play this game just because it shows boobs. Why pay for a video game to see boobs when you can just log onto the internet and get any and everything you want for free?

Not that I condone that sort of thing...err, stay in school!

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

The Demonologist class has a pet. The pet is a female succubus/demon, and its - TOPLESS.

Watch the 27 minute video presentation posted on the first page here.  omg two pixelated nipples!...

Lore... plays a part too, its the back bone of the game, not cheap gimmicks.

Excess has always been the most salient feature in any Conan story. To the point of gratuity, in fact.  It is quite deliberate.  Sex and Violence IS the lore of Conan.  People's strong responses to this, from day one and so many years later, proves Howard's understanding of vicarious social rebelion beautifully.  What happens in Hyborea stays in Hyborea, right?  People can't get enough of this shit.

If anyone posted this crap on aoc forums, they would be flamed back to hell, sorry, but as you can imagine,we got ALOT of these threads, they are really, really annoying.

  • kishekishe Member UncommonPosts: 2,012

the negative attention will last just few months with preteens (and bundle of older dirties) go "Ehehehe...boobies..." but they'll grow bored of it soon enough.

Same as with nekkid night elf /dances in WoW...at beginning you couldnt get away from it but nowadays its very rare sight.

There cant be more nerds or immature people in MMOs... WoW made that happen very fast and easy. It can't get worse thani t already is. Same people that make Night elves and dance around in cities screaming "Cyber for glod" and the same really bad pickup lines you see on RP servers where socially inept people try to play seductive so they can get some cyber, will happen in Conan, just with nipples this time.

It can't get worse, its impossible. This is more "cater to the target audience" than a nail in anyones coffin.

Some very good points.  Personally, I don't think I'll ever get sick of the decapitations:)

Any1 who plans to play this game, or isnt going to play the game because of the "nudity" it will contain, is a bit retarded imho.

For me its just a fun extra in the game, that will enable a better imersion.

Who hasnt seen boobs yet? Who feels intimidated by virtual boobs?

    Just my opinion :)
