My favorite part is when that guy up there said "They are even thinking of making a FFA Server!!" Why can't that be a priority? Why can't the AoC fanboi's leave this forum because its obvious the two games are nothing alike. AoC seems to be for the more faint of heart. "Argh I don't like you step outside the safe zone and lets fight"
lmao.
The FFA server is old news.
Age of Conan got its FFA server in early 2006 when it was announced.
If the game says: oh we'll put a ffa server up for pvpers.. then its not going to be that good of a ffa pvp game. If it was designed as a ffa pvp game, then there wouldn't be a need to make a separate pvp server. Take EvE for example, its ffa, period. What they are saying by putting up a separate server is that they are going to shove a game into a design mold that it is not, and that doesn't work out very well in most cases.
Instanced pvp zones? They were pretty fun in daoc, anyway, with the keep battles, so I can't say those are a negative, but of course something more like a fantasy ground based EvE style open system would be better.
As for darkfall? Interesting project. Might even be something that'd finally make the swg vet crowd stfu
As for the graphics... the video looks nice. Obviously an mmo can not have the most top of the line graphics, due to the mechanics of the technology involved, especially when there are hundreds of individual sprites wandering around (pc/npc). Great graphics = bog. Take eq2 or vanguard as examples. Meanwhile the oldschool mmo's are still doing pretty good, and their graphics are crap compared to today. So that should show you something.
Having an incredibly well textured high def complex polygon counted object might look good in screenshots or videos.. but realistically it does not work out very well. The video may not show such high-end stuff as one could expect from some new games today.. but that is a good thing.
The games graphics look like they were done by second rate developers... oh yeah, probably cause they were. Darkfall graphics have no stye, just looks plain and boring. It looks slightly better than EQ1.
Darkfall has good graphics?.... NO The games graphics look like they were done by second rate developers... oh yeah, probably cause they were. Darkfall graphics have no stye, just looks plain and boring. It looks slightly better than EQ1.
Showing some more of the games crappy graphics is supposed to prove me wrong or something? Apparently I know more about style than people that think this game has any.
Darkfall has good graphics?.... NO The games graphics look like they were done by second rate developers... oh yeah, probably cause they were. Darkfall graphics have no stye, just looks plain and boring. It looks slightly better than EQ1.
Well eq1.. thats pushing it. They look better than AO or DaOC based on the still shots, and the one video the OP posted shows a pretty high poly count just from the grass and the like, just not high res texturing.
In fact I just downloaded and watched the battle vid for the first time (http://files.darkfallonline.com/darkfall_battle.zip) and I must say that the models themselves are pretty good, and the landscape looks alive and well done. As is in that video they are acceptable on most of the models.. some could perhaps use a bit more texturing, but that would likely take away from smoothness of action (less intense, more lag, etc)
As for DF and second rate graphic developers.. I can see how that is possible. Most big shot mmo guys want to make mainstream WoW clones to rake in big bucks... The guys who make the more deep mmos are usually the little guys on the side, most of which fail miserably. Unfortunately its the little guys that will make the next big mmo (that isnt a wow clone), so its these guys we have to watch.
And let me finish by saying this is the second time I actually look up any info about this game, so I am not just being a silly fanboi (certainly not after going through the dnl fiasco.)
Graphically, the game isn't too bad. I think some of the graphical features have to be toned down to help reduce lag, so it's not as aesthetically appealing as AoC (and others).
Watch the http://files.darkfallonline.com/darkfall_battle.zip video, and instead of paying attention to the textures themselves, watch how the models move, how they are shaped. Look at the sails on the ships, the grassland, or character models, the animals, that sort of stuff. The shields/armor, the trees, etc. That is the measure of good graphics, not the textures painted on top of them. Some of what I am seeing here looks better than some stuff I saw in WoW, for instance, certainly better than ao, eq1/2, daoc, etc. Hmm if they get the game mechanics right this probably will appeal to many many people (skill based, sandboxy, etc)
You would think by now that internal videos run on developer machine would be given the value they are worth.
Nothing.
I'll put more stock in a grainy, hand-held cam recording of a game being played in a conference or game show over ABSOLUTELY ANY VIDEO released by a developer. I'm not just talking Darkfall, I mean Aion, Chronciles of Spellborn, Hero's Journey and the rest of those games that haven't shown themselves in the public.
Remember Gods and Heroes had lots of neat looking videos. I'm not saying Darkfall will go that route, but after all the MMORPG catastrophes of 2007 you'd think the community would be a little more demanding for hard evidence, not developer-massaged footage.
Bring the engine to game shows, let people play it and video it. That should be worth 1000x any official video that gets released.
Models themselves are an important part of graphics but I'd have to say that textures are just as important. After watching the video, the animation isn't that great either, looks too mechanical. Things like bad graphics and poor animation subtract from the immersion factor of the game for me. This game could be ok, nothing to get incredibly excited about though.
The say being a PK will be a hard career but a challenge is what alot of people attracted to this type of game want... Seems like it'll be a massive grief fest.
*EDIT* I also think the option of PK anywhere would incline people to cheat more. Who knows what possabilities a cheater will have with unexperienced developers.

Cheating can be done by people that know how to make software to alter the operation of the game. Can pretty much be done in any game but it could be more of a problem in a game like this if the developers aren't real experienced with preventing it.

The only PvP that is instanced in AoC are the "Drunken Brawling" and regular Arena matches. As for darkfall? Interesting project. Might even be something that'd finally make the swg vet crowd stfu If Darkfall can deliver on everything they promise, then sure, it will rock. But the game will not come out in a year or so. Q4-2008 or 2009 is by bet.
I think the OP is smokin some wacky stuff. Either that or he is utterly blind. Darkfall can't touch AoC. Then again, not much can ATM.
Read my thread title. I was comparing the video releases for both games. AOC videos look like crap to me and if you go to the other AOC video thread everyone pretty much is saying the same thing.
This video however is the best looking video released between the two. Both these games are very similar in concept and idea but at least I found this video to have more depth in it and great response to it's fluidity. If your playing this video you can see how well it works with the surrounding foliage and grass with flowers.
If I said Darkfall has the best looking game ever created, then you could accuse me of being a pot head or something. But right now I was comparing the two games and how at least for me this video looks the best between the two games released video series.
Eh, I'd have to disagree with the OP. I think the AoC in game videos look better. That's it. Though, saying "best looking in game video ever created so far compared to AoC" is just silly. If you are trying to only compare AoC in-game video to DF in-game video, should have said - "Darkfall has the better looking in game video compared to AoC" The "ever created" part really, really throws a lot of people off.
Not to mention I did manage to use my creative processes to pull a lot of AOC fanbois in.
I can honestly say, who gives a f#ck about graphics? Seriously. And what Ive seen from DF doesnt look bad. Besides, if an MMO launched with even half of the features that DF is aiming for, I think I could put up with some pretty awful graphics, maybe even WOWs graphics
Well, AoC remembers me more of the same MMO-cookie system, nothing new, mostly coz of this video that speaks for itself; if we compare in-game vids to in-game vids, the ballance falls not always in the side of the hyborians.
For me AoC is a WoW with a Conan theme. Sad destiny for the King of Aquilonia...

thre engine was designed around people trying to cheat so it should be ok other words can always get them banned
there planed releases is in 2008 and there planin g on abeta this year well i guess we will find out soon wont we

I want to play Darkfall as much as the next guy, but as of now, I'm looking forward to AoC the most because that game will come out before Darkfall.
if they dont push the release date up again im amzed it doesnt get crit from people something wrong here >>

From what I'm told about AoC that their release in March seems unlikely to them.

I'm not surprised. I was figuring a late summer release.
