I didn't really get a chance to see how the voting worked (heck, I'm not sure if I had ever heard of this award ), but I could offer up some ways a nominee could win an award WITHOUT being the most deserving nominee: 1) People were allowed to vote more than once. This would mean that, although you got the most "votes", say 500 people voting twice, you didn't have the largest amount of "individuals", say 750 people voting once, voting for you. (like when fans used dialing machines to rig American Idol)
Voting was tied to ip and to an existing E-mail Adress. This means if you wanted to vote "500" times you would need 500 E-mail Adresseses and ips.
With the topic in mind it is astonishing with that argumentation as the last years vote count was 540k people voting. Are you suggesting that the numbers this year would be something like 540k + 500k votes?Or if one can suspect a bit more votes lets speculate at 600k votes. And so meaning that out of those votes it was 500k LOTRO subscribers that voted?
And add to that and render my speculations faulty right away, the last years total of 540k votes was all 17 categories together. Leaving (540/17) 31k votes per category, so uhm, let's say LOTRO only needed 40k subs to win the votes with the topics logic.
On the other hand, I'm quite astonished over the fact that a MMORPG won the the award competing against other PC-Games, maybe that is so that a few other good PC-Games was not realeased this year and/or wasn't in the vote.
it wasn't lost on me old boy! look i can only imagine what it must be like to be one of the 175k people who play this game and constantly have to hear about how bad it is. i know that every once in a while you guys need to make a post like this and pray that people will say "you know what this game is amazing and you're not dumb for playing it" just to put yourself at ease. so stop doubting yourself for be a fanboy of a game that the majority see as silly and just enjoy the game.
Awesome post...could not resist to answer....
But, as I looked at that award ...all I could think of was this...
"Once upon a time within the LOTRO forums...Bildo Aggins posted...
"Hear ye, Hear ye...there is an award being offered to our beloved game..LOTRO...and Gandalf has asked us to vote"
"But. what other games doth exist...says xxLegollassxx the gold farmer"
"Well...uh...see...it is like this......"
"Tis Sauron Stalker and C&C Boromir...OMG...WTF?"
"LFG Barrow Downs...."
"STFU...no one wanna go dere...you loser noob...no groups here...go solo..."
"Those games...it seems those people are playing them, and do not have the time to vote...and I am still LFG..I can leave now...put in my vote, and my son and daughters and wifes also, as the whole family plays together (oo...what fun)...."
"Tis ok...as no one will vote for any of that other junk....BWAHAAAHA"
I look at it like this.... The award isnt an accolade showing how good this game is but rather an indictment about how bad this year was. being game of the year in '07 is like being the cleanest pair of soiled underwear.
I rank this mischaracterization of it right up there with the "Oh, Turbine obviously paid them off".
Amazing how some people are just so married to their own myopic and/or self-important point-of-view that anything to the contrary - no matter the source - is immediately dismissed.
Good reviews? -- "Obviously paid for"
Impressive subscription numbers -- "Obviously botched or completely innacurate"
Golden Joystick Award? -- "Obviously just a crappy year for games"
Lots of players who enjoy it -- "Obviously Tolkien fanboys who don't know what a good MMO is"
And on and on...
Is it really so beyond comprehension for some of you people, that perhaps there's simply a lot of people who don't share your point-of-view and really just enjoy the game, for whatever reason?
I mean, what thought process fuels that kind of ignorance?
Is it something like, this...?
"How could anyone possibly like something that I don't like? My view is obviously the only right one. Why would someone even question it?"
To be fair, there are people on the "fan" side of the fence who suffer the same... ignorance, delusion... whatever you want to call it. Either way it's ridiculous.
"If you just step away for a sec you will clearly see all the pot holes in the road, and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops

Actually dragonace answered your questions in the other thread: it is a question of mentality/personality.
The delicacy of knowing how to express yourself intelligently and carefully enough not to hurt other people's feelings is not mastered by all. The problem starts when it looks to be obvious, that someone is not even trying to do this - but quite the opposite. So, the purpose of these posts is quite obvious. The motives? Not always.... could be many things!

Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.
What must be even worse is to be a EQII or Vanguard player and watch LoTRO stomp all over those games in every way imaginable.
Jack, you gotta let go of the hate man! I like to read your posts, but you throw in your SoE hate in every single topic nowadays, its getting stale. Bashing anything remotely associated with SoE to bolster LOTRO (or is it any non-SoE game?) just seems petty.
On topic, I forget who said it in the first GJ award thread, but it true that as an online game, you'll have many more people even paying attention to online games and voting for them. Single player games don't foster a community, or probably as many players as an online game does. Throw in the WoW and SoE hating crowd, and a polished game like LOTRO has a great chance.
As far as MMOs in the last year compared to each other, IMO LOTRO is a sure thing. As compared to allPC games? I'm not so sure on that one.
Now, if I was only drinking what you were...then I would put on the rose colored glasses as well...
Cheers!
your glassas must be pretty rose coloured-you think eq2 is a good game.
And so is Mythos...quite good actually...
So is Hellgate..(kinda quirky...but, not bad)
Guild Wars is awesome...WoW is very good...and of course...yes..EQ2...
And LOTRO is not so good to me...
Just like EQ2 is not good to you...
Was there a point to your discussion?
Heh... about as much point as your post about rose colored glasses.
You guys will have to excuse openedge... he finds our intellect here a lot more engaging than what he can find in his own "community". We need to have pity for him.

Nothing going on in LOTRO right now?
Nope... still at work... and you?
I guess I still pity you more. As you are not only not playing EQ2... but find the community of LoTRo more engaging than EQ2's community. Now that is sad; considering you are supposed to like EQ2... right?
Edit: Decided to make a bit more clear... as I'm sure it will be twisted otherwise.

Still working...and I also have EQ2 players open right now in another tab, and also the forums, checking my tradeskills (oh sorry...that was promised in LOTRO...but never delivered...bummer)...and my mail account in a 3rd tab.....
I am also waiting for some reports to print...and I have an installation for a PC going...

You?
Nope. All I know how to do is hit the Refresh button.
Perhaps one day I'll rise to your glorious status though. Afterall last night I learned how to chew gum and walk at the same time.

Open... It's these kinds of posts that, I think, perpetuates the dubiousness of your intentions here.
In one breath, you'll praise, applaud and celebrate the posts of those who bash on LoTRO. Just like you have here.
Then, in the next breath, when called out on it, you'll turn around and state something like "I'm waiting for a reason to re-up my character because I really want to finish leveling it" Unless I'm mistaking you for someone else - but I don't believe I am.
If you have any idea in your mind of re-upping your LoTRO account, for any reason, then obviously there's something in it that you find appealing enough to go back - so long as they get "certain other things right", first. So, why is it that you seem so absolutely jubilant at the sight of anyone knocking on it?
Are you playing Devil's Advocate, straddling some fence or hedging bets here or something? Just enjoy taking the contrary position to any side, or what? It is a bit confusing.

Thank you for asking...
At this point...no, I have no further urge to continue...after the last patch (Book 11), it really ruined my impression of the game...
The performance had not changed, and in some cases was worse...the supposed changes to UI scaling still did not work...my kinship had disbanded and all moved on to other games...(beta's, Hellgate, EQ2, Guild Wars, back to WoW and The Witcher), my friends list had over 15 people who had not logged on in over 3 months...
I logged into an old character and found Landroval empty in Bree (I assume everyone buying houses)...the houses in the neighborhood I was interested in had been all sold and was on wait for the kinship houses to sell..
And I figured I was gone from here...then this award happened...and as I read it through, I decided to visit here again...saw how everyone thought it was the 2nd coming, and could not stop myself...
The award is funny, and everyone thinks this game really deserved it...and it does not..even other websites have ridiculed this years award...and yes, as Devils Advocate, I needed to point out the "darkside" of this award...as there are many points not known...
1. Why is this not done at the end of the year....as a majority of games get released in the holiday schedule...for example over the next month alone...we see The Witcher, Timeshift, Crysis, GoW...and more...all in November...so what did this award accomplish doing this NOW.
2. The award is based in the UK, and has a majority of titles released overseas or produced overseas that may not sell well in the states...it also included niche titles (RTS and Football Manager...only popular overseas)
3. Also, LOTRO wins GOTY, yet WoW wins best online game...why is this...did everyone who voted play the beginning of LOTRO and thought it was a single player game? WoW was in the same competition (mind you I know it was Burning Crusade....but Golden Joystick simply says WoW)...so, honestly...what did it win against...
So, all I am doing is stating this opinion...and I just end up here again and again because of the argumentative nature of some other posters here (DragonAce, Jack and Donnie)...but...I will be gone soon again...so no worries...
Last jabs I guess is the answer...as I am saddened over what Turbine did with a beloved license...yes, others like it...but for myself...it sucks...and some people may not be aware of how Turbine ruined one game (AC2) and killed another beloved license (DDO)..so, people may need to keep their eyes open to make sure LOTRO does not go the same way...
But, I may be back when the End of Year awards are announced...as that will be more telling in my belief...
So...sorry to jump in, but, I could not resist....
Well, I read here on the forums that Turbine actually added a link on their website to the poll. If true, then that pretty much explains how LoTRO won the award that it did.
In fact, it looks like rather than try to go up against WOW for online game of the year, (where it probably would have tanked) they recommended their players vote in the PC Game of the Year category.
Finally, I don't believe the total number of votes was actually published...so for all we know.... it might have taken 25,000 votes to win the award..... (or maybe just a few free golf games and dinners provided by the Turbine sales staff to PC Gamer)
This all reeks as yet another marketing ploy by Turbine to distort the popularity of their game.
Just as this thread reeks of being yet another "Troll" post by LotRO fans to tout how wonderful their game is. (sorry guys, but you are deserving of the "Troll" title as any who post negatively about the game)
Simple solution for Turbine, publish the number of subs..... as long as they withhold that information, I'm going to assume they are ashamed of it....
I'll stick by the estimate of no more than 250K total subs that has been provided by others in previous forums.

You would be correct. The exact post was linked to PC game of the year, and NOT online game of the year...
Quite perceptive....wonder who was second in Online game?...
Lord of the Rings Online beat off WoW, Football Manager 2007, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to grab the gong.
I have to agree there isn't really a lot of competition in that list unless people wanted to seriously include WoW yet again. The sad part being it's an appropriate list for PC games that were released in time for the awards!
The game still deserves the props for winning, but it's not like it was a close race. I think the competition next year will be stiffer.

Take Care.
And why you care, you don't like the game, you are an wow, eq2 FANBOI go troll to wow and eq2 forums, people on these forums are tired of trolls.
or you just jealous that LOTRO is a big success? that you cannot deny.
it might be doing ok right now, but after 1 yr is when u can really judge weather its a failure or not, but from what im seeing and have played it aint looking great...once it has hit the one yr mark ppl can come back and say "wow this game was the biggest hit ever" or "it failed horribly, what a waste"

Basically..I go where needed...and with such eloquent posts as yours..I think I am needed here..
Thanks
Well dont like Wow...EQ...Guildwars, but i dont have a problem whit that, i just continue to play other games that are more my style, and dont go intro a mass crusade , Not like a game is fine it happens to me aswell , people move on to the next game or come back afther some updates and try aigan ,but this goes beyond that. I have read almost all of your post at least here in the Lotro forums, and i said i did not find anything not negative yet.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

The End.

As compared to all PC games? I'm not so sure on that one.
Now, if I was only drinking what you were...then I would put on the rose colored glasses as well...
Cheers!

And so is Mythos...quite good actually...So is Hellgate..(kinda quirky...but, not bad)

Still working...and I also have EQ2 players open right now in another tab, and also the forums, checking my tradeskills (oh sorry...that was promised in LOTRO...but never delivered...bummer)...and my mail account in a 3rd tab.....I am also waiting for some reports to print...and I have an installation for a PC going...
I can multitask...cool huh?

Take Care.

The game still deserves the props for winning, but it's not like it was a close race. I think the competition next year will be stiffer.
