Just don't see how people can get soo angry over comparing it to WOW and say they're nothing alike....
- Both grind to get to end level - wow u can even use this point since 90% of the genre use this and wow didnt start witht this; so this point is void
- Both have the same borign quests- they DO NOT have the same quests WAR with accidental questing and public quests that actually affect the overall war where as WoW do not basically means they're not the same >.>
- Both have raids- once again any game in the genre that has a shred of PVE probably has raids; so this is void to
- Both drop gear from boss mobs- same as above except you also get gear drops from PVP which is diffrent and better then wow
- Both have similar combat- once again back to the whole genre thing; most mmos, except a few, utilize the same similiar 'TEMPLATE' as a starting point
- Both ahve similar UI's- you op cannot say similiar UI when theres been no hard evidence or videos really showing off the UI, but from the little we have seen i dont see how a map in the center with 9 button slots (this is basic not getting to into the ui) is similiar to wow's UI with the map in the top corner and over 20 button slots
- both control similar- again with the genre ASWD very common
- Both have PVP battlegrounds- wow this point is very broad so ill put it into the genre again
- both have levels- by this point i can tell ur grabing for things to say
- Both fantasy- genre
etc etc.
Every mmorpg out there is the same, it's like EQ2 aswel is just WOW or DAOC or anything else out there.
And who ever said that every single WAR fan is looking for something new and innovative. I defenitely think that WAR will have content that no one has ever seen, or atleast that has never been done right. But just as a couple other people already stated, many WAR fans are looking for something "fun". If it's fun, why wouldn't you play? Isn't that the entire point of MMO's, and games in general? The way I see it is that if it "feels" like WoW, then that is a huge accomplishment. WoW felt great while you were playing, whether or not you liked the game is a different story. I'd be happy if WAR "felt" like WoW, whats the big deal? As long as I don't feel as if I have a part-time job within the game, and I get to smash heads in, I'm sold.
Just don't see how people can get soo angry over comparing it to WOW and say they're nothing alike.... They do have a lot in common but holy tap dancing Christ, you picked some of the worst points.
- Both grind to get to end level - wow u can even use this point since 90% of the genre use this and wow didnt start witht this; so this point is void
- Both have the same borign quests- they DO NOT have the same quests WAR with accidental questing and public quests that actually affect the overall war where as WoW do not basically means they're not the same >.> So killing the mob, and then returning it is a complete 180 from getting the quest, and then doing that exact same thing? I don't think so.
- Both have raids- once again any game in the genre that has a shred of PVE probably has raids; so this is void to I'm siding with AionOwns here, but only because there will be a smaller focus on the raids, and because there will most probably be fewer of them.
- Both drop gear from boss mobs- same as above except you also get gear drops from PVP which is diffrent and better then wow Different, better, and a completely different topic. PvP has nothing to do with boss mobs.
- Both have similar combat- once again back to the whole genre thing; most mmos, except a few, utilize the same similiar 'TEMPLATE' as a starting point
- Both ahve similar UI's- you op cannot say similiar UI when theres been no hard evidence or videos really showing off the UI It's clearly visible in a lot of videos , but from the little we have seen i dont see how a map in the center with 9 button slots (this is basic not getting to into the ui) is similiar to wow's UI with the map in the top corner and over 20 button slots War takes away the non-hotkey buttons, and moves the map, not a revolution.
- both control similar- again with the genre ASWD very common Here, you are right, the control scheme is the same, because it's probably the best that there's going to be in an MMO. Unless they switch to a FPS style movement.
- Both have PVP battlegrounds- wow this point is very broad so ill put it into the genre again This is just a comparison to WoW and not MMO's in general, so I'm going to side with AionOwns again.
- both have levels- by this point i can tell ur grabing for things to say While technically, there are other ways of doing this, Levels are just a good way of going about the character development, This is just a really bad point.
- Both fantasy- genre
etc etc.
Every mmorpg out there is the same, it's like EQ2 aswel is just WOW or DAOC or anything else out there. Well, if you pick the trademarks of a genre, and find a game in said genre, you're definitely going to find similarities. It's the ways in which it's different that make them important. If I were to say that Jade Empire and Oblivion are the same because: - You make your own character. -You progress through a story. - You develop your character. - You kill bad guys. I'd expect to be called an idiot.
They say all these features the Warhammer Developers what you've listed above but i bet when it's released they're all be abunch of lackluster ones that are in every mmorpg. It always happens....
Tbh the current format is aload of crap and every mmorpg down on that list are all the same. You may say Eve or Planetside are different but in the end they're not because EVE's grind is just for money and Planetside still has the level grind on PVP instead of PVE.
I really hope developers stop boring us with mediocre crap, the mmorpg genre is such a joke and the only one that has made a professional polished mmorpg is Blizzard so far.

I've been avoiding replying to this topic but the above statement shows what kind of person the OP is - a WoW fanboi and nothing more.
WoW has had hundreds of issues. I remember the time for several months when logging into WoW was a crap-shoot. You might get into the game in under 30 minutes - might. It took them forever to fix that issue.
WoW has had some of the worst imbalance issues that I've seen in a game. They are also the first MMO I've seen that completely invalidates huge chunks of content with the release of their first expansion. They have even admitted they did this. Actually, I take it back, EQ1 did this as well with the release of Planes of Power though it was not nearly to the extent that BC did in WoW.
WoW has had more than its share of broken talents and spells and patches that did not work.
It certainly does not have a perfect, or even close to perfect record. DAOC, EQ, EQ2, Eve, CoH, CoV and others are polished, well done games even if you don't like them. Get off your WoW horse.

Ok, NOW your only fooling yourself. I'll give you CoH had a polished launch, and as it should. CoH was an insanely simplistic game. Cookie Cutter EVERYTHING. Unless you didn't play DAOC for the first 2 years, your just lying. DAOC for the first year was awful, connectivity was awful. Year 2 was better, but when they added Necro's and Shades, or the entire inconnu Race, Balance was awful. Necro's could fight 3-4 people at a time, and WIN!! Not to mention PvE they were 2-3 times faster at XPing then anyone else. WoW was by far and away the best game ever produced. I hate WoW By The Way. I don't play it, because its not MY kind of game. From an effectiveness stand point, its the best, It's got more people playing MMO's then ever befor. More people played WoW last year, then EVERYONE that had played an MMO 3 years ago combined. If it was made to make a maximum number of people play it, It won.
Warhammer isn't about how great WoW was, or Was NOT. It might have something you want that WoW didn't have. That's Why I'll try it. If it does play out like WoW, I'll be cancleing.
Meh, daoc had one of the smoothest launches in mmo history (only beat by coh and lotro perhaps) concectivity wasn't that big of an issue, well, if you run into a 150+ vs 150+ vs 100+ sure you'll ld, but that's the case for every mmo out there. Daoc definitely didn't have database problems where it takes 30 seconds to loot
And blah, mythic always makes overpowered classes to sell expansions, then once expansions sell them nerf them down to acceptable level (necros got hit with a los fix which made it the most buggiest class ever to the point no one played them in pvp except 1-3 people on each server)
Well i personally thought DAOC's PVP was slow and boring and the character movement was dated/clunky and the UI was ugly as hell.....
We have different opinions, oh well... however most people obviously agree with me seeing as DAOC has a small population compared to WOW.
DAOC has a smaller population than WoW because it's hella old. WoW uses much newer technology, people haven't played through all the content over and over for however many years old DAOC is. Games get old, they get dated.
Blizz did a good job with their game, but you might as well say Vanguard was a way better game than UO because they probably have more subs. Honestly its totally irrelevant.
DAOC was great in its heyday, now its heading to the nursing home.
Still, the combat was better. I bet you never got to lvl 50, or if you did you didn't do it for long. The high end pvp was insane. Fights lasted less than 10 seconds usually. The only fights I had one on one that lasted longer happened because my opponent was skilled.
Its funny, I thought WoW had an awkward system at first, and now so much of it can be macro'd that you don't even really need to pay attention to play it. just key up your macro FTW.
But seriously...WAR will be nothing really new, just improvements on older concepts with some new stuff thrown into the mix. Just like WoW was, just like DAOC was compared to its predecessors.
Whoever it was a few pages ago that pointed this out was right. You simply cannot completely change the nature of the game. You have to make smaller advances, otherwise you will have a nice niche crowd, but you will alienate the majority of people who won't understand it and will quit after two days saying the game sucks.
I'll concede that there are many similarities between WAR and the MMORPG games that came before it. (including WOW).
The thing that sets WAR apart from WOW (and other PVE based games) is in the end game. WAR's primary focus is to provide an endgame (and actually the early game as well) that lets the players actions, be it PVE or PVP impact the game world directly by opening city sieges or holding territory in the open areas.
Nothing a WOW player does in PVP affects the game world in any significant manner.......it just doesn't matter if you win or lose.....only if you score the some faction points for participating.
In WAR...PVP will matter....individually and globally....and thats all I'm looking for in any game right now....
No more raid centric, pointless item grinders like WOW for me .........

I believe the OP jumped ship a loooooong time ago while you guys were still discussing the 7 finer points of the concept of RvR. Just leave it already.
WoW of course as you know was the first game with faction based PvP. WoW contains the best PvP experience, grind for gear in probably the best idea for a BG, AV, and press buttons 1-5. Shit a skilled hunter can macro 2 keys for functioning(maybe not being the best) in 1 on 1 PvP, every 2-3 minutes of course! Arenas? so balanced, I mean a rogue and a hunter vs a warlock and a druid, come on, its almost 50% chance for either side.
Now don't get me started on WAR. I mean with the background of DAoC. Whats that? a PvP game? with three realm faction based PvP? Must have released right after WoW and died quickly after. You say it had battlegrounds too? Again another stolen idea. Nice try Mythic you idea stealers, using faction and BGs? totally originated in WoW. An MMORPG? Wow was the first, orcs? elves? WoW invented those as well.
I played this RVR in DAOC and it was like WOW BG's to me but crap because DAOC's controls and UI are sooo dated, your character feels liek controlling a brick or something. Also DAOC's combat wasn't as fun as WOW's cause all you do is stand still and auto hit and that, atleast in WOW running about trying to miss the hits actually does something and requires more skill.
I don't have a problem comparing MMOs to WoW. It's the attitude that WoW invented everything and that all games are copies of WoW that I find to be total braindead bullshit. Currently playing WoW and have played it off and on since beta. The thing that I liked about it was that it copied a lot of the fun PvE stuff I liked from previous games (EQ & DAoC), but streamlined it and made it easy. There was NO learning curve for WoW because I'd done it all before. It's a sleak, polished, confection of an MMO designed for the masses. I AM part of the WoW community, but I detest the ignorance that infests it.
MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR Playing: WAR Awaiting 40k Online and wishing for Battletech Online
WoW might have been the most polished or easiest game for new comers to adapt to to date, but UO was really the best balanced mmorpg game in existence to date prior to it's UO:R down fall. The T2A era of the game is unrivaled especially when it comes to PVP. Regardless of peoples stance on full loot, thieves, and PK's UO was the epitomy of a balanced MMO it's economy, crafting, guild managment, and pvp sytem in MMO was the best to date.
Trammel was an attempt by Origin to stop a mass exodus of people leaving their game because they didn't find the pvp system fun. Sure there were people that enjoyed the gankage, however there were also many that didn't. Origin saw all the numbers first hand, and went with the choice that would please the most customers. That is the reality that a lot of people seem to forget.
Everyone looks back on the coming of Trammel and thinks that it was its creation that killed UO. But in reality it had died before that, and trammel was only a knee jerk attempt to revive it, to pull it out of its plummet in subscriptions.
Its true that it changed everything about what the game had used to be, and that is unfortunate because the freedom was great. But even if trammel had never come into existance... the game would still have been dead then. Only to a different (and in all honesty probably much larger) group of players. And im willing to bet that smaller group of hardcore players would not have kept UO alive for as long as it has currently lasted.
The game is STILL around after all this time, and hate or love the changes, I think that says a great deal.

I hate the WoW community so god damn much
Actually, Tolkien invented elves and orcs quite awhile back. Not to mention, what you're saying is complete foolishness, as DAoC came out three years prior to WoW's existence. People who liked WoW too much fail to remember it's not the first of it's kind, and it's definently not going to be the last. Though it has many similarities, the truth of the matter is that all MMO's have SOMETHING in similar, be it PvE/PvP content or etc. Looking at your sig I cannot believe you played all those games and still believe that WoW has invented most of the things you've listed.

He really should have added a sarcasm tag to his post.
I myself didn't realize it until the line about daoc coming out after WoW.
I see soo many people getting angry about people comparing this game to WOW and the way i see it, why shouldn't they? WOW was out a long time before this game when it's released and is the most popular mmorpg out there so obviously it's what it'll be compared to. Looking at the beta videos and all the info on sites about this game basic feedback and videos and previews have basically said it's your standard mmorpg and hasn't really changed anything...
RVR is just another name for Faction vs Faction and the Battlegrounds in this game do look like they play like WOW's BG's. The combat in this game is slow and looks boring like WOW and from what i've seen you click spells and have the same auto attack feature. Also the UI looks pretty similar with some changes but all the function is there and the same from previous mmorpgs. The quests from what i've seen have been also your basic kill 10 of these and come back, rinse and repeat with a few cool ones... like any other mmorpg. With graphics that look like WOW aswel ofcorse your going to egt people comparing them, i don't care who styled their franchise first this way, fact is WOW was out first and people will compare it to that.
I just don't see why all the hate on these boards because if you think it's not going to be anything like WOW then you'll be massively disappointed tbh. Warhammer Online is not going to break the mold and is not going to do anything new by the looks of it, just going to be your standard tried and tested style mmorpg.
When did you play WAR to come up with this. You must have been in beta then. If not, looks like you have no clue.

The first sentence is obvious sarcasm. If that didn't tip you, then the last one definitely should have. Tolkien popularized elves and orcs. He didn't invent them. Orcs go as far back as Beowulf, and elves to germanic mythology with appearances in most western folk stories and mythos.

I'm not exactly a Mythic fan, a WAR fan or a WoW fan.
I didn't bother to read other replies.. I just wanted to toss in my own.
RvR is in fact (tm)'d by Mythic.. DAoC came out before WoW (oddly.. amazing).
So about 5 years ago +/-
We had UO, EQ1, AC1, AO and... not sure what else besides DAoC.
UO had open PvP altho Trammel existed by then I believe.
EQ1 had pvp servers.. AC1 I never played (cuz it was crap imho.. but others liked it.. no idea of what it had for pvp).
AO was faction baed..
DAoC came out with 3 factions.. and the "pvp" was seperated into a "frontier".
They later started introducing battle grounds.. and early on had the pvp dungeon "darkness falls".
Anyway.. long and short of it.. EVERY mmo uses the standard bs.. kill 10 of this.. take this thing over there cuz I'm to lazy.
Unless its skill based.. aka UO before EA ruined it or SWG before LEC/SOE ruined it.
Oh and as to pvp.. ya WoW pvp could look like DAoC or WAR by now.. seeing as how one of the early devs from DAoC was hired by blizzard to help them "improve" their pvp... either as an employee or a consultant.. I forget which.
The only thing you left out was..
WAR will be crap because it has EA stamped on it now (you could have at least tossed that in with examples). Just like whatever bioware was making will be crap cuz EA owns it now.
I'm currently waiting for EA to buy funcom so that AoC can be guaranteed crap as well.
He forgot to mention that WAR uses graphics AND has some text in it. That's all been done before too. And after years of RPGs and MMOs they finally settle on a general paradigm for UIs that people are comfortable with and that's a minus? Who wants intuitive? I want my UI to be totally random and alien damnit!!
Damn morons.

STOP JUDGEING A GAME THATS NOT EVEN FREAKIN OUT DAMNIT
Seven.
Just my 2 cents.
D.

He really should have added a sarcasm tag to his post.I myself didn't realize it until the line about daoc coming out after WoW.
Its subtle, but its there
When did you play WAR to come up with this.
