Bioware and Lucasarts teams up

Article : http://gamernode.com/news/4856-lucasarts-and-bioware-team-up/index.html

QUOTED:

If the news of EA purchasing Pandemic and BioWare is still rocketing around in your brain, then this news of another deal will make you happy. Thanks to the launch of its site and an email in my inbox, LucasArts announced a deal with BioWare to create a new game.

Well, I use the term "game" loosely since the press release refers to "an interactive entertainment product"; I don't want to refer to games as "interactive entertainment products" in the foreseeable future.

Anyways, the deal sounds great; but combine it with our story of the long rumored Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG and you got an even heftier story!

As you know, BioWare hit a homerun with the first KotOR in 2003. Since LucasArts retains the usage of the KotOR license and wanted to crank out another game by the next year's holiday season, they hired Obsidian Entertainment to handle KotOR II.

Well, it's close to being 3 years since, so with that said along with more substantial news of the new deal, I wouldn't be surprised if there really is a KotOR MMORPG, or just a single-player RPG KotOR III.

I have never played KOTOR but I am hoping this is a Kotor MMO. I just love star wars and a REAL mmo set in its universe would be amazing.

    there isnt a KOTOR2 yet???

i got the original for $5 the other day and its...interesting.  not the best game i have played by far but its a good star wars one.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

This has been indeed very good news. I expect great things in the future

I've doubted the credibility of the KotOR MMO rumors, basically to prevent my own disappointment if nothing else.... This however, is real news and gives a shred of hope, real hope.

  • Bane82Bane82 Member UncommonPosts: 1,242

I know what you mean Hoobley, and I tried to as well, but with all the evidence being shown it's kinda hard not to get your hopes up. That's why I put the "If Only..." tag on my sig, just in case. God/Bioware willing, we'll have a KOTOR MMO that will fill the void left by SWG

this is the announcement that shows the MMO isnt kotor based since companies dont usually go off and develop a game for years and THEN go try to get a liscense to publish it , usually its other way around just so you dont have to pay an arm and a leg for the lisc.

Since the MMO has been under development for some time and this is a new  agreement ,it kills any shot of being related to the MMO that BW has been working on for a few years.

But great news for kotor 3 with an online mulitplayer element  being done by bioware instead of some other company now seems likely.

or maybe they just announced it because they were trying to keep it secret? jesus, dont burst our bubble.

While you do make a good point, remember that this is just the press release. It COULD (and it's just speculation) that the agreement could've taken place a couple of years back and we're just hearing about it now because LA still has a contractual agreement with SOE and didn't want to betray SOE's trust until it's time to pull the plug

  • GorairGorair Member Posts: 959

then what reason would obsidian have had for keeping the fact they lost the LEC IP to bioware secret years ago before the MMO was announced?

Im pretty sure this means somethnig good tho ... Like KOTOR3 from BW which in turn means a game prolly BETTER than original KOTOR. Dunno about you but thats still sometyhing worth waiting for in my book.

Very interesting, makes you wonder, however I will still wait and watch for more news. Would really hate to get my hopes up for something and then pooooofff, I was wrong.

    So...how about this thought:

The current Bioware MMO *isn't * Star Wars KOTOR...but, Lucasarts, who have theoretically been working on their own MMO, possibly KOTOR...decided that they would go ahead and work with Bioware on it since all the world is slavering for a KOTOR mmo made by Bioware?

A little twisty, but, why not?

hmmmm you make a good point, it is definetely possible. Either way as along as we get a new better SW MMO I'll be happy and if Bioware helps out, all the better.

Didnt a guy at bioware already deny the rumors that bioware was making a kotor3?

How about I prove you wrong by saying that we are not working on KotOR 3 and have no plans to start? It may be a rumor or w hope or w wish or whatever, but we are not currently working on KotOR 3 and we have no plans to work on KotPR 3 at this (or any afaik) time.

Dont that mean if its kotor..its an mmo.

True, but two things, he said they weren't working on a KOTOR 3 (which really would be sad nonetheless because I enjoyed KOTOR and KOTOR 2) but he didn't say antyhing about not working with a KOTOR MMO. He did also state that they weren't planning on working on it now and actually if I remember the original interview, it said "... no plans to work on KOTOR 3 at this time." which meant that there was a possibility they would in the future, in fact I don't remember the "or any time in the future" being there the first time I read it at all... looks like somebody's either had to re-trace what they said, or somebody has been doing some photoshop editing.

wow alot of denial in this thread. I hope they make something besides KOTOR. It made a good singleplayer RPG. but a MMO i doubt it would be very good, doesnt matter who develops it. Some people would buy a piece of turd just because it has Bioware and SW on it.

Another Bioware rep said that if KOTOR 3 is going to be done, it's not going to be from Bioware- my guess is *cough!!* EA.

    Ok.... guys its really simple...

    1. We know without a shadow of a doubt that bioware is in the process making an mmo... period... go search their site.. this has been known for a long time.

    2. With the recent posts around here we know that Lucas arts is helping them with it. Ok?

    3. We also know that if lucas arts is helping with it, chances are its a star wars title... period. What else could it be? Im sorry, before anyone says anything ..... indiana jones is out of the question. Obviously. Use your brains people.

So if we put 2 and 2 together, you get 4! I mean... its blatently obvious now that they are working on star wars mmo. The real question you should be asking is... is it going to be kotor or is it going to be something else like legacy?

    2. We dont know Lucasarts is helping them with the MMO, we just know they partnered up with lucasarts.

You have to laugh at all the naysayers who insisted bioware would NEVER work with lucasarts again and that there was NO WAY they were making a kotor mmorpg. Seems to me like a lot of people look pretty darn silly now...

Played: SWG 2.5 years, WoW 4 years
Tried: RF Online, Ryzom, Daoc, CoH/CoV, Lotro, Vanguard, Guild Wars
Beta Tested: SWG, RF Online, Lotro, Potbs, Tabula Rasa, G&H, Perfect World

Obsidian can't lose what they never had?  They were contracted to make Sith Lords...that's it.  They've said they would like to make KotOR 3 themselves (which would be my preference...I think KotOR II was lot less polished and rushed but a much better RPG overall from the first game) but that would requires LucasArts allowing them to do that.

I think my dream would be for Obsidian to develop KotOR 3 (with more time to finish and polish the game than they had before) which wraps up the whole Revan/Exile storyline, followed by Bioware's KotOR MMO set in the same time period but with a completely new plot line.  That's the dream.

In their defense, BioWare / Lucas Arts could be making SWG2...not KOTOR.

One thing is 99.9% sure...IT WILL BE A STARWARS TITLE!

Only one thing......PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE FPS!
