Yeah i used to play this game with a ruler, some dice, the lead minitures and some homemade buildings. I loved it and then i went on to play warhammer 40k. This was the only game I decided that i HAD to play this year. Im going to go cry myself to sleep now.
Originally posted by Zackxm Second, as far as Ultima being the next big cancelation. I think that you need to look at the facts. Ultima Online still has a fanbase that's huge even though it's been outdone for 5 years now. That game will be released, if it's good it will suceed.
I agree on Ultima Online, thats exactly the problem, EA doesn't have a great track record in online games and if Ultima X is not great, it will only be in competition with themselves. It has been months since they have given any signs of life. They were a no-show at E3 and they closed the Texas offices, where the game was being done. I would love them to surprise us with a release like they did with the original announce of the game. But I think that after Motor City, Sims Online and Earth and Beyond, I sincerly doubt it will happen ....
And so another game with actual potential goes down the drain... i don't personally think there's a problem with the market per se, it's the lack of interesting inovative games. Build worthy games and they will come.
Yea there will be more to come. Most will fall due to the picky ass player base. People need to realize that no game will be perfect or not have issues. But im sure they will just cuss and cry cancel on the boards like they always do.
I'm not suprised. The graphics shown on this website for the game were horrific. Everyone looked like crack addicts. The environmental graphics were hardly better. I cannot understand how someone could claim they were on par with EQ2. The environmental pics for EQ2 are far far FAR better... though the characters do look plastic.
In anycase I was not suprised to see this canned. I will be suprised if Wish ever makes it out as well.
This is such an incredible shame.. My next MMORPG was going to be a toss up between World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online, and having read all about the proposed class systems of WO, I think it might have won. WoW will be monumental, there's no doubt about that, but at the end of the day I love non-level based RPGs - such as WO would have been - and there were a load of ideas proposed that would have enriched the market to no end.
For those of you who never did, read the interviews with Robin Dews at IGN - ALL of them, and see what the MMORPG community will now be missing.
Oh, and the people who think the graphics were crap really need to do their homework. The graphics were amazing - look at the videos and screenshots of the monsters if you still can, the level of detail is excellent. Yes the faces needed work, but hey, now they'll be ugly forever.

I didn't care much for the graphics. I guess they were not so bad... They just looked exactly like almost every other MMORPG out there, nothing special about them. Of course the game was still in the early stages, so things might have improved later on. Like I said in another thread the one thing that I only saw really going for the game was all the Warhammer Mythology, some of that stuff was really good. But that's just me.
Looks like you're now stuck with WOW SD.
Testing Currently: Alpha: Guild Wars Beta: Saga of Ryzom + Risk Your Life Playing: City of Heroes Interested: WOW & EQII (yeah, both... deal with it)
Well, some may see this as a bad sign for the genre, but I don't necessarily view it as such. I'm certainly disappointed to see another promising MMORPG bite the dust, but as some have aleady mentioned in this thread, the genre will become less bloated.
The biggest problem with the MMORPG genre is that most all of the games are fantasy themed. It's obviously a popular setting, but those who aren't captivated by such are not going to be drawn in to another manifestation of warriors and wizards. One reason City of Heroes has done so well is that it is truly a fresh theme. If you take a look at the game list, the majority are fantasy, with scifi a distant second. The only way to really expand the player base is to add some new themes.
Warhammer is a lucrative license, but the online version was stepping into a crowded pool. I still say the limiting factor to these games is time. Anyone who has tried to maintain characters in more than two games will tell you it's a hard thing to do, so MMORPGs have to either lure existing players away from other games or recruit new players. With some of the big titles on the horizon, this is a tall order for any game.
In recent months we have seen Mythica, Earth & Beyond, True Fantasy Live Online and a number of smaller titles fold. This doesn't mean that the genre is dying, it just means that some natural selection is taking place. The titles that will break out will be those that provide something different than that which is already on the market. Watch Pirates of the Burning Sea or Ultimate Baseball Online to see what I mean.
Again, I hate to see Warhammer go, but I'm not as pessimistic on the genre as others who see this as a harbinger of doom. In fact, I think the genre's best days are ahead. I really do.
----- There are 10 types of people in this world...those who understand binary, and those who don't.
So much for variety being the spice of life... I think it's funny that over half of the posts in this thread panned the graphics for not looking like EQ2, which has to mean the game will suck, of course.
And you people wonder why games are incomplete, and blah, blah, blah. Because devs and publishers know you mouthbreathers will buy ANYTHING if it's shiney enough. They don't even have to make the effort of having a functional game engine. Just a good graphics engine with good particle effects, and all the newest graphics buzzwords. You'd buy a sack full of horseshit if it had a high enough polycount, and a fancy prerendered video on IGN.
WO was a niche game. It's core audience would have been fans of Game Workshop games. Between a publisher, and developer with no experience in MMOGs, I'm not at all surprised that they pulled the plug thinking it would be a failure. Every game coming out thinks it has to take do as well as EQ, and do the same numbers, when it doesn't. UO is still going, despite EA's best attempts to bury it, then sodomize the corpse. It doesn't have EQ2's graphics, or gameplay. Wonder why people like it since it's not all flashy, and whatnot. I guess it will just remain one of those unsolved mysteries like the secret of the pyramids.
I think, eventually, the smaller developers will learn not to have forums for their game. They'll just have their forums link go to the EQ/EQ2 site. Then all the EQ2 fanbois can sit around, patting each other on the back about how great the graphics are while they wait for release so they can write post after post about how the game sucks.
Just a quick reminder before I end this tirade. Everytime a game such as this is canceled, the likelihood of a publisher taking a chance on some indie dev team with a dream and a kooky idea gets smaller. And eventually all you have is 2 or 3 games, which look and play exactly alike. So all of you whining how everything doesn't look just like EQ2, don't be surprised when all you have to play is EQ2.

I don't care much for the grafic fetures of the game, what I care about is that it has an good core that make u want to play more. Sadly few games has this today I think, both in mmo's and regular games.
Well not much to do but to stick to eve and hope it doesn't get screwed over and mabey have an eye out for pirates of the burning sea and mabey Ultima X but other then that I will leave the mmo seen for a while forward until someone comes up with a game that realy is to my liking again.
And don't come and say u still have EQ2 and WoW, cause I don't like the the games so screw u if u get ofended.
Shame, the game had potential -not just due to the Warhammer universe-. On the other hand it did sort of have a vaporware feel to it.

Games Workshop doesn't have the best track record when it comes to PC versions of Warhammer. Though, their upcoming RTS looks promising. Now if only they'd realize that a turn based version of Necromunda or Mordheim ala Xcom would be the shit, assuming they could find a decent developer, I'd be satisfied. A little.

Well, when all you have to look at the game from this side is graphics then what else can you compare it to. You do not have gameplay or anything else to base it on unless you are testing it.
Graphics aren't as good as other games either, EQII is just a well known game to compare it to.
I went back to find the screenshots that I viewed on this game a while back on mmorpg.com but was unable to find them in previous news room sections. All I remember is seeing this woman or man (couldn't really tell what it was) that was pale and thin looking like a crack addict from the streets. Much like the elves in Shadowbane. Really bad modeling. Thats why I wasn't impressed. If it's like SB then it's pretty bad. There, not compared to EQ
I wasnt much of a WO fan either, but yes, the graphics were top notch, very nice. such a shame to see a game that was put so much effort into fail like that. Sorry for all u WO fans =(

The graphics were good, its just none of the models were particularly pretty from a visual standpoint.
I didn't really care much for this game, but it's still sad to see a game that had 2 years of developement get cancelled.
