Guild wars is between 4 and 5 million players now, most sites only show the number of active players around July, which was 4 million. However that doesn't have any subscriptions... I think the second most players is... eehm... Maybe it's EQ2, it's scoring quite good lately, and the number of players keeps rising. However i think the second most players is around 500 000, which could be any game.
Err no...
Last I checked Lineage II has over 1.5 million players
And EQ2 has yet to break 400,000 unless something changed recently.
1.5 million subscribers on the official servers? If you include private servers it won't be hard to reach 1.5 million players..
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
MMO sub numbers is so misleading now. No point looking at them. Many companies fake it or use stats that show them in a high rather then a low. Ontop of this the best method to check a games popularity, the ACU, or Average Concurrent User Method is now hard to collect in many mmos since they no longer give hard numbers for the amount of users online.
Subscription based game – you pay a regular fee in exchange for essentially unlimited play time. Used for NA, EU and possibly Japan
Pay per hour – You pay for each hour you play. Commonly used in Asia. “Free” to play – Free is in quotes because nothing is free. These games make money through a variety of means, including box sales, in game item sales, advertising, or as a lost leader for an internet café business.
With the exception of Korea nether the free or per hour models bring in anywhere near as much per customer as a NA/EU style subscription. Furthermore both skew the total numbers, particularly in China because there is little reason not to have multiple accounts. If you pay per hour played it doesn’t cost you any extra to switch over to another account and play that instead. In China where you can’t legally play a single account for more then 3 hours in a day this is pretty much the norm, which makes it seem like there are more people playing then there really are. This makes it very difficult to do a head to head comparison of “active accounts” verses subscriptions. Games like EQ1, EQ2, EVE, CoH, DaoC, etc primarily count subscriptions, as does Linage and WoW in North America. In Asia WoW and Lineage primarily count accounts, not subscriptions, as do the vast numbers of Asian MMO’s. Blizzard further complicates this by counting subscriptions in China even though they don’t run the game there. The9 pays a license fee for WoW and operates it as if they made the game themselves.
Except for Korea, Subscrition based games take in a lot more money then account based games relative to the size of the player base. For example WoW needs 25+ "Active accounts" in China to bring in as much money as 1 subscription in NA. (Player pays much less in total and The9 keeps most of it.)
Since you can’t really compare subscriptions to pay/hour accounts directly you need to either compare total $, or break out the numbers into separate “Subscription based” and “Account based” and compare like to like. Keep in mind the OP asked about subscriptions, not accounts.
Do you have any official facts and information to back that up?
with more and more MMO's chosing the micro transaction over the monthly fee model, it's hard to believe that the micro transaction model does not at least rival the monthly fee model.
Also, World of Warcraft and Lineage both count active subscribers in Asia not accounts created. You can read this in the subscriber definition in WoW's press release and the financial reports of NCsoft.
None of those has monthly fees, you can have monthly fees on RS... but who'd pay for that? And guild wars doesn't have any monthly fees neither. The OP asked for games with monthly fees.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Are you high? What are you smoking? Can I have some?
SWG hasn't even come close to being a contender for over 2 years. It could have been if things hadn't gone so wrong.
I think your sarcasm detector is broken.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
Second Life? Are you kidding me? It's free to play, and once you create an account it never goes away. So while they may claim millions of so-called "subscriptions," the number of people actually logging in is significantly smaller.
Let's not give that furry-ridden smut-hole more credit than it deserves, mmmkay?

There are no subscribers for WoW in Asia because WoW doesn’t use a subscription model in Asia. Do you understand what a subscription is?
Blizzard tracks something call “active accounts” in Asia, not subscriptions. In China having multiple active accounts is the norm because it doesn’t cost you any more then a single account and you are only allowed to play a certain amount of time per day on each account.

Apparently, one million people. Still, it's only five bucks a month.

The notion that graphics, or anything else for that matter, are anywhere near as important as gameplay/fun is so utterly ridiculous that anyone who shares such a view should be placed in an asylum.
Heres an article I wrote about a week about about the most popular MMOs. Top 5 MMORPGs
World of Warcraft - 25% market share
Runescape - 16%
Second Life - 12%
Knight Online - 11%
GuildWars - 10% More info at the link above.
If that's what you wrote you need to improve your research skills.
True that.

well..didnt read the full thread but im sorry to say WOW is not the most popular MMO, that spot is held by Maple Story with its 30+ Million subs world wide.
Also, its not F2P, its runs off of Micro Transactions...
and guildwars is always on the "most played games" list on xfire.com
i hate to say it but, both of those games have MANY more players than EQII, FFXI, or pretty much anything (except the two lineage games but they are mostly eastern based, so i dont know much about them)

*Gives korvix the weird look* Maple story has about 100.000 active players wordwide, you've probably got the active of people who tried the game . Don't worry, Nexon probably believes that they have 30+ million players too.
BTW, where did you find those numbers? Might always be useful to use those wrong numbers as an argument in a discussion about active players. *evil laugh*
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
And again, old numbers, may 2007. However they're true, Runescape is doing good with the kids as first their MMORPG, because it's free and easy. L2 is going down because NCsoft isn't doing anything about the private servers, why pay for L2, if you have thousands of free servers?
Might be nice to know, there are companies which are specialized in private L2 servers, for 40 USD/month. I even know somebody who has one.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Tho not the most subs i can confirm that EvE has over 210,000 paying subs on its one server.
Probably the best way to settle this question is to get everyone to post known figres of paying subs for there game. like i just did.

Dude, step *away* from the crack pipe. Or give a source for this utterly unbelievable number. Or both, that would probably be best.

according to http://mmogdata.voig.com/voig/ContentList/MMOGDATA/Charts/4.ViewChart?aLanguage=en-us, Runescape is the 2nd most popular after WoW. Guild wars comes third.

The VOIG data is wrong, at least for the games that my company publishes.

This thread is funny. Everyone has a different answer for something that should be a fact and not an opinion.

i dont see how anyone could possibly get an accurate count, we KNOW the companies lie about such things.
the irrelevance of this doesn't stop there tho, the question is a generalization almost bait...
if you stretch it out far enough you start to question what counts as a mmorpg , its like the universe ending and beginning at once.
lastly , who cares about wow?! get a damn upgrade already and play some real games!
lineage 2 is going down, runscape is gong up , check this out :

And I think lotro is around the 300k now in NA and the EU.
Still, no match for WoW, because WoW's players are convincing other players to play it, quickly making it the biggest MMORPG out.
