Technically speaking as well, no console or computer in the history of creation has ever died or being killed. Developers could still develop for the SNES if they wanted to. Developers will always make PC games, because it's the single biggest platform in the world. The XBox franchise can never dominate, because it doesn't have Japan. A console needs Japan to rule, and the only reason the 360 is getting so many Japanese games is because Microsoft are paying through their nose for them. They can't do that forever.
Agree completely; I don't think they'll pull it off either, mostly for exactly the reasons you gave. But they're definitely trying.
Originally posted by Torak Well, MMOs are going to change within the next 5 years or so. The days of games like Vanguard are done. (thank goodness) Tradional MMOers are probably not going to like where they are heading but thats the way of things. They are are not going to just "disappear" if that is what you are getting at. MMO gaming has not made the impact it could have for a a few basic reasons. System requirements, Fees, quality, and fun/entertainment value. Keep in mind online gameing is just taking off. MMOs have not been able to capitalize on that momentum. (at least here in the west) Gaming isn't in its "prime" yet...it's just starting to really make an impact on the entertainment industry
Ya, I agree...gaming is just getting started. I foresee the greatest MMO ever will eventually come to fruition, it will be called: REAL LIFE. Eh, look for it in stores like 50 years from now. (it's competitor will be called....shhhhh, the Matrix.)
Has far has microsoft trying to kill PC games, I have a very hard time believing this. But, I have noticed that there are fewer and fewer PC games for sell in game and electronic stores like game stop, circuit city, best buy etc. It has been a trend for awhile now with x-box and playstation titles taking up all the shelves.
It is safe to say that there is a a lot higher demand for games like this over PC games.
We are, all of us, including the worst soloers, social creatures.
As long as a MMO is able to offer positive socialising to the players in general, including the worst soloer, it has an edge a single player game doesn't.
Each and every soloer I know would rather be soloing in a MMO, then in a single RPG. Now, they pick single RPGs because the MMOs choices is...limited.
The MMOs concept might be developped by the wrong persons, it may have issue to evolve as it should, but I have no doubt that it will only increase over time, even with the worst possible devs and the weakest decisions these devs could make.
MMO is the future (raiding is not however...and it is crippling the developpment of what should be taking over).
Eventually, there will be no stand-alone game offline. What would be the point to play an identical game which doesn't support multiplayers experiences? Again, poor design decisions, such as raiding enforcement, limit the developpment of the genre. Even if I play solo and doesn't group, the presence of the other players make it a superior experience, I may commit to some chatting, to some comon area, to the leading board of competitiveness. And it is my belief that almost every player could be corrupted and turned into a grouper if properly approached, soloers are tame-able. You don't lock a free roaming animal in a jail, you let's it open with food and warm...it isn't a jail anymore, it is a shelter...the same apply for playing in group...you cannot force grouping on soloers...best soloers should be soloers...as long as best groupers are groupers...you will see them flocks, at a time of their choosing with a group of their choosing.
But in time...it will evolves...and prosper even more. MMOs are only a parcel of what they will be. A few years back, almost nobody sees that there would be MILLIONS of subscribers...and with the right design, most players will be happy to join these ranks, rather then stick solely to single player experience. Poor design (raiding) is the worst enemy, and it can only slow the process, not prevent it.

From a design point of view, it is easier to make a good game knowing what your players are using, what is the quality and the potential of their system.
The Amiga system was design for that, and it was vastly superior to PC or any console...yet it fail. An Amiga 500 could outmatch a PC which hit the maket 5 years later performance-wise. It still died horribly.
What conclusions can be draw from that? The only one that make sense for me is that...games are not a priority for the peoples in general and they don't care much if it move backward. But that is the conclusion of 20 years ago. Would it have beens the same conclusion now?
At any rate, consoles are inferior to computer on a performance level, which is quite weird. They should be superior. But for some reasons, they aren't. You have only 1 thing to get working properly, it is running the game the best you can...and still the computers are doing better then the consoles...
Which is quite ironic in the end...the Amiga, which was the superior gaming system died. Now, PC gaming which is the best gaming system is experiencing setbacks and troubles.
