Why does everyone say there is NO crafting...there is crafting, the only difference between this game and any other MMO with crafting is I can make anything I want at any time....now that sounds like a lot more fun to me.
Maybe your not actually the one pending 3 seconds making your hands move so that *poof* I have a new sword....but your doing the SAME thing when you bring it to a crafter.
Well this is a matter of opinion and I disagree. I bet pleyers who doesnt specially like to craft, will agree with you, but people who really like to envolve themselves in the crafting aspect of a game, will agree with me - that there is no crafting in Spellborn.
Ok, so you don't have a skill that goes up in level...big deal, the point is to go out and find the armor that you really want...your still doing the gathering part of crafting, which in most MMO's is the main part of crafting...its also the part that I personally find more fun, the exploration of areas looking for stuff is much more satisfying to me than coming across TONS of the same stuff that you just craft into junk over and over again.
Ok, so we dont gain any combat skill per level...big deal, the point.... Thats what a crafter is hearing you say. same thing.
Conserning harvesting... Im actually alittle bedazzled by Spellborn removing crafting, but kept harvesting. Usually harvesting is the most grindy, timeconsuming and boring part of crafting, but you do it, becasue afterwards you get to actually CRAFT.
The only problem with their system is that you can't be called a crafter...I guess that's what most of you are worried about, but I could care less, as long as I'm having FUN...and I have no doubt this game will be.
Hehe.. Well, as long you're having fun - to hell with the others
I was just trying to clear things up and maybe convince some people that this crafting system isn't all that bad, it will just be different than what your used to. I probably did exactly the opposite though lol.
Remember, that people are disappointed becuase Spellborn looks like a good game. If the wouldnt look interesting, crafters wouldnt care less and moved on...

No it is not a matter of opinion. Either a game has crafting or it does not have crafting. That you don't like the crafting that is in this game is ok though. It is another matter to vent an opinion that contradicts fact. That is just ridiculous.

You have to understand the mindset here about the people complaining. There are a few reasons why they don't like the system but I'll only explain two that I'm most familiar with.
The first is that being forced to have the smith refine the materials means your character isn't crafting the goods. This breaks immersion for people who want to pretend they are smith.
The second is that the Spellborn system is very eglatarian. Anyone can craft in this game. There's no barrier to entry beyond taking the time to find and gather the materials. Without barriers, like levelling up your crafting skill, crafters can't distinguish themselves as easily as in other games. This uniqueness is important because they can wield more monetary power over other players who don't level up crafting or choose a poorer profession. This uniqueness is also important because crafters can act as social hubs. Some people like the idea of other people being dependent on them.
There are other reasons but there's a start in understanding the underlying reasons of what's being discussed here.

No crafting doesn't really apeal me. I love crafting, and about that "there are so many mmo with crafting out there" sure, there are tons of them. Just none of them has a good and advanced crafting system that did apeal to me. That blows, well. Spellborn seems interested in many other ways so i'll try it anyways

Bes
Bes while I do agree with you in some aspect,I do have to dis-agree in others,Yes you do have to basically harvest and not craft but isnt that basically the same in any mmo,I mean in alot of mmo`s you start at 0 crafting and have to make alot of crap to level up,Which means you have to harvest alot,The difference here is you have to harvest but not to level up,Also when you have a recipe it is bound to you so to make more you just have to harvest the items again,This is basically the same system as any other mmo except you dont have to level your crafting.
I do agree that some players enjoy leveling there crafting to be the best,I also think alot of players will enjoy this system as they can get the items they want if they put the work into getting the items and not if there guild is raiding some boss that drops the pattern.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Yes. This is what it boils down to - Peolpe who doesnt like to craft, will like gathering maths and let a NPC craft the item for them. But a player who likes to craft, will probably hate it. Isnt a crafting system ( i wouldnt call it a crafing system as it is now) suppose to cater the crafters?
As it is now..
Questing caters adventurers
PvPing caters PvP'ers
Crafting caters PvP'ers and adventurers
Roleplaying...well they already have a hard time and probably have to cater themselves as usual
And yes, people probably do craft to become the best crafter, or be an important supplier to their guild, but that is no different to an adventurer or PvP'er. As much as crafters need to be the best, so do adventuerers and PvP'ers. The problem with Spellborns system is that adventueres get to develop their characters, crafters dont..
In most other games crafters cant really become the best to by just leveling it. You aint the best when your skill is highest as possible. Alot, and when I say alot, I mean ALOT, will have the skill to. So to become better, you are going to hunt down the best paterns.
Oh wait, isnt that the same as the system in spellborn?

Are you saying here that gathering recipes is devoloping a character? if so, I highly disagree.. but I may missunderstand you here, if so I apologies

If gathering recipes is a nesessary evil in a crafting system, thats okey. Atleast you need to level your skills to be able to use the recipes. that being said, the best crafting systems i have tried didnt envolve recipes hunting at all - you gained all your resipes as you gained skill.
Actually you made me realize one more thing...Spellborn have the two worst branches from a crafting system, Harvesting and grinding recipes.

No

There is some facts we agree on.. one is; Only Non playing characters actually does the crafting. This is what im basing all my posting around. Wether gathering recipes is a way to develop character, or that Spellborns "crafting system" caters crafters, is only an opinion and you cant tell me im completely wrong for having a different opinion than you.

You touched on a good point without realizing it. The lead developer made an interiew on a European gaming news source called Gamona IIRC. He stated that unlike most MMOs which created too many timesinks for players Spellborn is supposed to play out as an adventure game. This ties in directly with their view of crafting.

That is news to me. I don't think that is true, but maybe you have a pointer to where SIL claims this?
The crafting system is not so bad, but it is limited and not meant for those who want to roleplay a profession. It is just meant for players to change their looks while they progress in the game. I don't think they will change that. Not any time soon, anyway.
Originally posted by Delanor It is just meant for players to change their looks while they progress in the game. I don't think they will change that. Not any time soon, anyway.
That's incorrect. Players can craft sigils which are stats for their characters. Due to the rarirty of components players can take pride in branding their crafted goods because people will know goods made by one player will contain certain stats different from anyone else. Then there are consumables to take into account which provide temporary buffs.

He left out the part about Sigils, but that does it make it incorrect.
On the other hand, Sigils are not crafted, but looted, found, bought or traded. They are used in crafting weapons and jewelry, or actually fitted in weapons or jewelry, much alike they are fitted in body slots and spell slots (although you need different Sigils for that). But they are not produced in any crafting process as far as I know. Therefore I do not quite follow your reasoning behind player produced goods. I think it is incorrect.
I think for the most part there is alot of guess work going on,Yes we do know there are no craft trainers but that is about it,It could be almost as hard to have the piece of armor drop as it is for a recipe in other mmo`s,Also you still have to get the matarial needed to craft the item,How hard this is for better looking items we just dont know,It could be like primal nethers from wow, where it takes a group to down the boss but only 1 guy gets the item needed.
To say at this moment the crafting isnt good is being foolish,Yes you dont have to level it but that is it,How hard it is to gather the items to make the piece of armor we just dont know,Time will tell...

Yeah, I've seen the interveiw. I just disagree with them saying crafting is a timesink; Harvesting is a timesink, recipe hunting is a timesink, but the actual crafting is not (imo) ...Its a game feature just as questing, PvP and roleplaying.
I may add - I generally love the idea of removing timesinks, such as; portable AH/mail, no trainers, able to sell junk away from vendors etc

So...I'm just curious, how would you solve the problem of crafting timesinks? If all those things are such timesinks (and I do agree with what you say are timesinks) all you are left with is automatically having everything you need to craft something. Some "timesinks" I think are important to have or it makes the game move to quickly in my opinion...I play MMO's to enjoy the adventure, I'm not one to rush to the highest lvl.
I also don't really see those other things you listed as timesinks, traveling somewhere is part of the immersion and adventure of an MMO. I could do without trainers perhaps, but I couldn't play a game where you could sell stuff where you stand. That's just my opinion I'm not trying to be attacking or anything, I'm just curious to what other people think on this too...
"but I couldn't play a game where you could sell stuff where you stand"
This is the way TCoS is set out you will be able to sell your items without having to goto the auction house,I think this is a nice idea though it may not be for everyone.
As for timesinks I really dont mind harvesting and collecting certain items for crafting but for me its the adventure and immersion that makes me play a MMO so I would not like to see the harvesting being a huge timesink.
In some games like maybe WoW there wasnt much to do end level without groups or guild raids,so I did find myself just farming mats quite a bit which got really boring after a while, but with TCoS there are mini games planned,Like playing chess or checker`s against other players in the tavern on release and other mini games planned and that is just fine by me.

Sorry, I was probably alittle unclear...
I dont want the timesinks in crafting removed, because I see them as a game feature such as questing, PvPing and Roleplaying.. should we remove PvP because its a timesink?
Conserning havesting as a timesink, Im just wondering how Spellborn can say they are trying to remove timesinks while they are left standing with only harvesting and recipe hunting... It doesnt make sence to me
"Conserning havesting as a timesink, Im just wondering how Spellborn can say they are trying to remove timesinks while they are left standing with only harvesting and recipe hunting... It doesnt make sence to me"
How can you make a game with no timesinks, when a game itself is a timesink? They have said they want to remove SOME of the timesink you see in other MMO`s,It is not just crafting but also things like large end game raiding where it tends to feel like a 2nd job are also not in this game...

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Sorry, I was probably alittle unclear...I dont want the timesinks in crafting removed, because I see them as a game feature such as questing, PvPing and Roleplaying.. should we remove PvP because its a timesink?
Conserning havesting as a timesink, Im just wondering how Spellborn can say they are trying to remove timesinks while they are left standing with only harvesting and recipe hunting... It doesnt make sence to me

How can you make a game with no timesinks, when a game itself is a timesink? They have said they want to remove SOME of the timesink you see in other MMO`s,It is not just crafting but also things like large end game raiding where it tends to feel like a 2nd job are also not in this game...
