That is correct. However, just because graphics look the same does not mean the games are the same. The pixels are not what matter in a MMORPG, its the gameplay. I think you will find WAR vastly different than WoW in many aspects Torrential
Agree 100%. I will not play WoW because I don't like the game play. As a matter of fact, I don't really care for the graphics either. I loved DAoC, because of the game play, and the graphics. I'm hoping Warcraft will be as good or better.

I believe that the original poster is refering to in-game graphics and not concept art. In other words, ther ehas never been a Warhammer mmorpg released before. So the idea that WAR the mmorpg is a clone of Warhammer, the mmorpg is flawed. Otherwise why call it a clone when it is indeed a derivative?

WAR will put wow to shame but will probly require a nice gaming machine for the stuff like open world pvp and hipeful just a little bit tougher. It will still grab huge numbers just not 10 mil.

Wow talk about stating the obvious. So WoW came out 20 years After Warhammer and 4 years before Warhammer the MMORPG.
So what was your point then?

Even though both styles are similar (don't really care which one came out first or who copied who), I find myself already preferring WAR's style much more than WoW.
I think the graphics in WoW are incredible, just the vast amount of effort that went into it really shows. I'm not sure if WAR will be able to match the amount of detail and polish in graphics as much as blizzard has, but from what I've from screenshots and videos, it's all very promising.
Even though I have a raging nerd boner for WoW graphics, there are some stylistic choices that don't appeal to me at all. The first is how disneyish the art style is, and while it looks great, it just looks too gentle for me sometimes. Sometimes I would like to play the big ugly mean brute, but even orcs and dwarves look sweet and gentle compared to warhammer greenskins and dwarves. Warhammer has that gritty meaner look than WoW without having to turn the entire color scheme to monochrome BROWN. Once again it's preference, but I love how much meaner and more monsterous the orcs and goblins and just everything else in WAR looks compared to WoW.
The second is color schemes in WoW make me want to vomit sometimes. WoW is one of the most saturated MMOs colorwise I've ever seen, and although they utilize it well to fit with the mood and theme of an area, it just makes me sick sometimes. It just feels so meh to stay in an area like zangarmarsh for so long where everything you see is BLUE, and then go to netherstorm where everything is PURPLE. Just way too environment vomit everywhere

Well thats because WoW's graphics engine is really very basic by 2004's standards. hence the washed out textures the colours [to hide the low res textures] the low polly game models and how everything looks like its floating a few inchis off the floor in most places.

Yes they do look similar and that's because WoW ripped off WAR's art style in a big way. As other posters pointed out, Warhammer came before Warcraft and Blizzard's Warcraft 1 was really just a ripoff of the Warhammer franchise. There are some differences, i.e. goblins and high elves and chaos, but they are similar this is true - but it's certainly not Warhammer's fault, nor is it Warhammer that is copying WoW, at least graphics wise.
I have always found Warcraft's lore to be convoluted and contrived, and I like Warhammer's much better.
Of course you have the graphics...WoW's graphics are poor by 2004 standards. Compare them to SWG, a game that was released a year earlier, or EQ2, a game that was released at the same time....it's not even a contest, SWG and EQ2 win hands down. WAR's graphics will blow WoW away, as they should.
Of course the poor graphics are what allows WoW to run on a 10 year old computer with Windows 98, and that allows blizzard to rake in the cash.

Warhammer has got so many looks, from realistic to WoW'esc, WAR cannot claim an art style.. thats the bottom line.
SWG has better gfx than WoW... we're talkling about the same 2 games right? and as to compare EQ2 to WoW they are two very different art styles, EQ2 wins on poly count but on pure creativity WoW wins no contest, you've seen 1 zone in EQ2 you've seen em all.
On to WAR gfx, poly for poly they are about the same as WoW(I know you dont believe me), the only different is the texture resolution and that they appear slightly more realistic, where as WoW realies on hand painted textures, any 1 can go take a photo of some grass and make a texture.
I think WoW gfx are the best on the market when all things are considered.. poly counts and hi-res textures dont impress me, attention to detail, good smooth animations and diveristy impresses me more.
I remember when Mythic was banging on about their "lighting system" and what did we get? a friggin lightmap.. whoop'd-do. around the same time some new WoW WotLK images were released and guys on here were mixing em up cus they couldn't tell the difference.. made me laugh.

wow has the worse graphics ever. was made to run on crappy comps. so nothing they can do about it, many things in wow aren't even 3D, you can't see the difference probably because your comp can't run the other games out there on high resolution sets, games like, eq2, and lotro are years away from wow in graphics. i know people that play wow and tried eq2 and lotro and liked that games alot, but they back to wow you know why? because they don't have money to upgrade their comps, when they come over at my house and see the difference btw wow graphics and lotro on a good comp and monitor, is when they say man wow graphics really suck.
wanna see what good graphics is check these screens, and show me anything near that quality on wow.
Every single one of those pictures is a crappy picture of gollum. What the hell are you trying to say?
also the textures in WAR are hand painted too, the only game that looks like it tries to take pictures of things to use as textures is EQ2
I personally think EQ2 looks like a load of trash. The SOGA models improve the old ones GREATLY, but it kills the realistic style that its fans claim to have. Most of the textures in EQ2 are just downright plain ugly and lazy, they just find whatever texture and slap it onto anything without regard to the shape of the model or the size, and it simply makes the whole world end up looking fake and drab. Also not to mention that all the same races share the same body model (only slightly altered), all the races share the same exact animations killing any racial identity, a ton of armor is reused with different colorations (which I realize most armors do, EQ2 takes it to a new extreme considering most of the armor looks like crap), the armor is even more colorfully mismatched than WoW's, the armor looks like tincans sprayed with paint, the robes all look like brown boring potato sacks, and the character models look very plastic, fake, hideous, and have playdough hair. More recently I've seen better things in the game such as weapons and armors and enemies (which I'm assuming because of help from the SOGA team that actually knows how to make 3D models that don't look like ass)
and I can totally understand that people hate the cartooniness and over saturation of WoW. Infact I prefer more realistic styles like guild wars, but please don't tell me that this abomination is realistic http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/7172/humankc4.jpg
Games Workshop, who designed the World of Warhammer back in 1983, took many ideas and impression from the work of Tolkien, as well as other European influence. The game Warhammer, while it has a dark under tone, has always had a little sense of humor. The art from the 80s was cartoonish, yet dark.
Mythic, in keeping with the basic art concept establish by Games Workshop, began to use their model and art that is nearly 25 years old to make the model for the MMOG. While the color texture may appear similar to WoW, the model design of the Dwarf and Orc is within the traditional style of Games Workshop's creation that has been around since 1983. The only similarity of the 2 games is truly that it shares the same level of color texture. The only game Mythic is copying is the work that has been in place by the artist that had worked for Games Workshop.
It is said that Blizzard tried to license Warhammer from Games Workshop back during the development of the original Warcraft. For whatever reason, the deal fell through. Instead of scratching the project, Blizzard made some modifications to the graphics and art, created their own backstory, and called it Warcraft, their own new IP. Hence, the two look extremely similar because one was actually based off of the other.
After that bit of fact , let us discuss this further. Do I need to post screenies?
To be honest i could care less if the game looked nothing or exactly like WoW.The gameplay looks extremely bland and repetitive, and -that- is what will keep me light years away from touching this game.
