Poor Turbine

Well looks like LOTRO and DDO are both taking a big hit today as their servers are all mucked up.  Pretty pathetic that it takes...um ...all day to get the servers working.  Looks like they may have to combine more servers after this fiasco.  I read the DDO and the LOTRO forums and people are...MAD.   The servers have been down all day, I can't believe this.  LOL.

Combine more servers? When's the last time LotRO had server merging... Oh, wait, never.

None of those forums posters must have ever been SOE customers....because if they had been, this would be normal operating procedure.  The amount of patch problems that SOE has had in their time, and the amount of launch issues they have had in comparison to Turbine is ridiculous.

Or Blizzard for that matter. WOW had various bugs of it's own, days of downtime, and HUGE queues for months after release.

I'm sure people will get over it.

Prove it or Shut Up. EQ2 has not been down a single full day, unscheduled, since launch, EVER. So put up or shut up troll.

If you were playing EQ2 during launch, you would have seen what kind of nightmare that was....and most game launches are.....I have been through both Turbine launches and they were much, much better.

BUt isn't LOTRO supposed to be the PERFECT non-problematic MMO out in the market?  So why would their servers be down ALL day?  This is supposed to be the next gen, uberpewpew MMORPG.

I was one of the guys at EQ2 launch, who stayed in the mini chat they had at launch(which was frequently muted as people were whining non-stop for answers :P). If I recall correctly, the game was never down a complete 24 hour cycle in the first week, but the combined downtime of daily crashes, hotfixing and things, I would guess probly reached about 24 hours total in that first week. Given the scale of the game, I guess it was acceptable. I don't think it needs to be agressively deffended, its just something that happens, and I roll with setbacks.

Is it? You're the one telling the story.

I mean seriously, an MMO with downtime? OMG, NOESSSS! What is the world coming to!!!!

Well said, I just don't understand the trolls who feel the need to bash any company that has downtime issues....it happens...and if your life is that lonely that you need complain about every games downtime that you don't have a subscription to.....its sad.

Yeah...maybe i'll go play SWG....oh wait....I might as well look at  Turbines downed server message then go into an empty game.

Unlike SOE, when WoW went down for several hours at a time, Blizzard actually added those days to people's accounts. That is, they didn't charge you for those days.

Blizzard did have problems when WoW went live. Mainly, these problems were caused by a huge and unprecedented influx of people to the game. They filled their original servers on launch day. They brought up servers they didn't expect to need for weeks and *those* servers filled up within a day of Launch. They spent some time scrambling to add servers to keep up with demand, and yes that led to big problems for some folks (mainly those on the East Coast, because back then servers were geographically associated).

My server, Silvermoon, was one of the servers that was brought up later on Launch day, not one of the ones that was used for Launch itself. However, I was there that first day, and for the next several months. I remember it all pretty well and think Blizzard did a pretty good job of it overall. I thought they were fair. Yeah, they could've been a bit more informative, but they did try to keep us informed, and, most importantly, we did get our lost time refunded... I've *never* seen SOE do that.

Overall, I think Blizzard does a better CS job dealing with server issues and downtime than SOE does, at least in my own personal experiences.

EXACTLY, and I was there for launch as you can check my character stats at eq2players. There was NEVER a full day the servers were down, and the launch, though not perfect (noone's was, not even WoW's), was not as bad as some trolls would have you believe. While EQ2 had hours of downtime compared to days of not being able to get into WoW.

It's not so much "defending" EQ2/SoE as it is some jerk picking game X out of the blue and making up crap without anyone noticing.

Problem is, they didn't give credit for waiting in queues - which is where I seemed to spend most of my time. 2-4 hour wait times? Give me a break, most evenings I didn't even have 4 hours spare in total, not to mention the random server logouts that seemed to happen at the worst times, sending you right back into the (end of the) queue.

And before anyone starts - the server I chose had a LOW population when I joined it.

Point is - all MMO's have had downtime as well as there share of problems, even the behemoth that is WOW. If you can't handle downtime, may I suggest you look at another gaming genre.

Yes, SoE recompensates for major problems. Seriously, is this make up lies about SoE troll day? Did I miss the memo? In fact, SoE gives free items for expansions and even staying in the game for certain amounts of time. OH WAIT, Blizzard doesn't do that... burn...

Everything else I agree with, Blizzard did a great job playing catch up to an unprecedented launch that took them, and probably everyone else, by surprise, Kudo's to them for it. Fixing the major bugs they had AND keeping up with the demand as it was would be extremely hard and they got through it ok.

    Fail !!!!

No-where in that post he made did he mention a game name, he just said SOE which stands for Sony Online Entertainment.

Oh and so there is no confusion here is the post im refering to.

bahamut1, maybe you should read what I said more closely before calling me or my post a troll. All I did was talk about MY experiences. I didn't lie. I didn't exaggerate. I didn't accuse. I gave facts as observed by me, and that's it. If *you* want to extrapolate what I said so as to get on your high horse, well, I can't stop you, but you're wrong to do so.

I can understand you being defensive about SOE (at least EQ2). I've played EQ2. I haven't commented about it. I'm not going to comment about it here, either. I compared what Blizzard did with what SOE did that *I* have observed, and left it at that. I haven't been "burned" because we weren't talking about the virtual doo-dads that gaming companies give during expansions or for veteran status.

I've never had SOE give me anything when they were down for a long time (like during the EQ days). That's not the same as saying that SOE has NEVER given anyone anything when they were down for a long time.

I don't appreciate being called a troll -- even less being called a liar.

You're joking, right?  There were announcements that the servers would be down for maintenance today. Since the servers don't come down every day like they do for other MMOs (EVE to name one), one day hardly seems problematic.

I agree that it's not a big deal (certainly not as big as the OP is making out), but the announced downtime was 3 hours. The forums came back up, but the games are still down 20 hours later. I'm not too worried about it, but they did overshoot their estimate by juuuuuust a bit.
