I have a been a huge fan of this game for a year now, and was really gettin hyped up about this game until I saw something that made me think, NCsoft has F***ed up again... In a recent interview with Developer Ken Choi (think it was #6), he stated that outside of The Abyss (the pvp zone where PvPvE would take place), there would be no interaction between the 2 races. This means 2 things: You are limited to 1 part of the world when you choose a fraction (this is a MMO, remember), and THERE IS NO WORLD PVP.
They claim to be aiming at Western MMO players, then they go and make a incomprehensably stupid design choice. Making it so that if your Asmodian, you can't experience the Elyos side of the world, and world pvp/raid towns/fight for dungeons is just rediculous - and would seem the biggest mistake ive ever seen in an MMO - this can barely be called an MMO anymore.
If they had any sense (of what the hell they are doing), they would at least make it so that if your Asmodian, and are in an Elyos area, you can't attack them, unless they attack you 1st, but NOT stop them from experiencing/interacting with the other faction altogether, thats shortchanging the costumer to the extreme.
If they don't change this before launch, this game will be a HUGE failure - sure, some people might buy the game and not know this sad truth, but once they find out, they will leave within a month - G G...

If more people post here and agree with me, maybe a Dev will see and post with his thoughts about what will be done about it - this is a serious issue that has been overlooked by most fans of the game (im sure) - I want to love this game badly, as it seems the best offering of 2008, but they need to do some serious thinking about who they are tryin to market this game to, cuz with design choices like that, clearly they don't know what Non- Asian gamers want in an MMO.
that just means that they cant talk to each other or pvp or trade or anything like that. he said no interaction, think wow. except for dueling. You misunderstood. you can still go to that area you just cant do anything with the other faction.

Watch the interview for yourself, he said, and i quote
" IN NON ABYSS ZONES, ASMODIANS WILL ONLY PLAY WITH OTHER ASMODIANS, AND ELYOS WILL ONLY PLAY IN THEIR GIVIN ZONES, THERE WILL BE NO INTERACTION BETWEEN THESE 2 FACTIONS ''
Your MISSUNDERSTANDING..
well if that is true then it just proves that everything has one flaw or another. But the abyss is the largest zone, and if you wanna see the other zone then make a toon of the other faction. not everything is perfect. yah i would like if that wasnt the case either but, we will see.

So, if the game is designed like the OP claims...then that would make it...hmm.. a lot like DAOC's design.... realm specific, safe PVE areas where only members that faction can PVE, without ever seeing another enemy member. PVP takes place in the Abyss which sounds alot like DAOC's Frontier area.
Clearly AION is totally outside of the design of other Western MMO's, well, except for maybe DAOC, WAR, AOC and some others......like WOW.
Geez...if you want to see the other realm so bad... roll an alt on another server....
Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

Troll, while you have some points, you fail to realise, that while it is similar to DAoC and WAR (not AoC, you can go anywhere), Its a step down from the best example, WoW - which happens to be the biggest, most well-recieved and most popular MMO of all time - which has world pvp (even tho its not as supported as intanced pvp/arenas, etc). In fact, if you read about PvP gripes about WoW, the number 1 complaint (maybe besides class balance) is lack of incentive for World pvp - as many players feel forced to BG/ARENA for gear/honour, when World pvp should have more rewards, as it is the best kind, most loved form of pvp. So they ARE making a big mistake....
Shame that there are so many people who judge a game based on some features told about while it's in desing, when ultimately it's not the features that make the game, its the execution of those features.
And shame that people think that when they disagree with professional team making and MMO about how to make a good MMO, then the only possibility is that all those professinals are wrong.

You shouldn't be forced to roll an alt just to experience the entirety of a game - it takes away from the very fundamental aspects of what an MMO is - Besides, thats not the point, invading enemy home territory with your guild/faction is what PvP is about ("should be"), not bideing your time in your area till your high enough lvl to enter a battleground...shouting "Oh we know where you guys are, but we're not allowed to come to your area - even tho we're at war, so we'll just meet up and duke it out"....?
Some MMO dev's make the continual mistake of comparing Eastern mmo's to Western. They say wow there are millions of people playing L2 in Asia, it must be good, players must want this.
What they fail to realize is that there are about 3 billion Chinese/Koreans/ etc... compared to 500 million North Americans.
Western mmo players prefer a different style of play.
Asian mmo makers just don't get it.
I agree with the OP this game is not going to do as well as War or AoC. It will be like CoH, it will do ok, but only ok.

Im sorry dude im really sorry but you cant experience all of any MMO without having more then one character. Example time, who actually took one character in wow leveled the professions to cap deleted then grabbed a couple others then deleted those then grabbed a couple others till they tried em all, who has went through RFC and Stocks at appropriate levels on the same character. noone, it just doesnt happen, and maybe if your pulling the storyline crap they are both honorable during war (the fallen included). who knows. and you never know what features will actually make the game.

Anytime-anywhere World PvP is a great Idea as it adds to realism to conflicts. What Blizzard didn't anticipate was how almost ALL the servers was one sided battles(majority of players are Alliance) and there was nothing they can do about it. If you played the Horde, you would know what I mean as to how unfair the constant Alliance raids were at CrossRoads and Tarren Mill. We were always out numbered 3 -1. Don't get me wrong, I had fun even though most of the time it was only me and a hand full of other Horde against 100+ Alliance. Then it started to get tedious when most of them decided to make rogues. The sollution? They made "Balanced" Battle grounds to avoid one-sided Raids. Like it matters, the Alliance just camp outside the Battle ground entrances. Incentive to world PvP? Maybe if it was Balanced. Just because WoW is popular doesn't mean it's flaws are tolerance-free.
I'm sure NCSoft wanted World PvP also, but didn't want to suffer the same issues WoW has. They learned from WoW's mistakes and added the Server controlled 3rd Faction Power Balance Feature(The Balaur) to avoid one-sided battles.Could they have just added that feature to the entire world? Maybe. But this system is new and unsure if it would even work effectively. Who knows, the Abyss could just be a testing ground until the Balance feature is perfected.
Aion is aiming for pvp and non-pvp influenced gamers. If you think WoW is um.. so "WoW" and great, Why don't you just play there the rest of your life?

Mountain out of a molehill. To the Nth degree.
If you would refuse to play a game because of this, you are a big, fat baby. I'm sorry, but there's no nice way to say it.
Aion is not going to live or die based on this single design decision. Most players will be perfectly willing to accept that there are places they cannot go. It works in DAoC, and it works in CoH. There are no masses of players clamoring to get into the home zones of the other side in those games.
Yes because Dark Age of Camelot was such a HUGE PvP failure, you are completly correct and....
Wait, it wasn't. It is the most respected PvP game on the market.

"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
"Judging by some features told about it while it's in designing*" Well, if that feature happens to be an invisible force preventing you from adventuring beyond the realm of your own area then I'd have to speak for tons of people by saying that this is in fact a mistake.
It seems like a shortcut and it makes me wonder why they'd do it. Vrika, this is a dramatic change or decision if it was implemented from the beginning. You make it sound like it's a puny unimportant feature, if it can be called a feature. And wtf does it matter if it's a decision made when it's not yet finished, it's obviously something they feel strongly enough about that they'd release the information in an interview as to avoid leading anyone in the wrong direction.
I completely understand that many people are excited about this game and don't want to think about something that might hinder their enjoyment of the game, but I am willing to accept the idea that this could take the MASSIVE out of massive mutiplayer.
Asian mmo's are for the most part not what the majority of us want over here. They make flashy cheap affects while forgetting that we over here like some actual depth to the game. Also, we don't like small areas or loading, that should be a given, but it costs more money to do this and money isn't something our friends crossed seas are willing to give up in order to make a decent product. mmo's aren't the only example of this....aqua dots anyone?
As a few before have said, they said you can "interact" with the opposing faction which I take to trade, communication, etc. They never said one faction is forbidden to enter the other's home zones. You'll probably get killed going they as I would guess it would function much like WoW's home zones.
Even if you simply cannot enter the home zones of the enemy faction, it's still not a big deal. He said in that same interview that the Abyss is the higher leveling grounds. The Abyss is the world PvP. Each side will be leveling there, fighting over leveling grounds in addition to fighting over control of the forts. It sounded to me like all you'd miss is the PvE only newbie safe zones, as each side levels in the Abyss later on regardless.
city of heroes and city of villians use the same style the original poster complained about. coh/cov does it nicely too.
Moving back to the OP: I watched the videos and couldn't find anything about the statement you made (yes I did checked #6).
It would be a good idea if you posted a link to your source.
What Ken didnt mention in the interview is that there will be portals opening between the Elyos and Asmodians lands to allow for random pvp. Nobody knows where and when they will open, so it's difficult to abuse. This was said in a pretty new q & a, think you can find it on aionsource.
I think the point is that the starting lands are two almost seperate planets (if you watch the world image), so it would be hard to go to the other side without passing through and first controlling the middle, The Abyss.
I will see the results of this game at the open or closed beta.
but the thing that all MMORPG's based most on MMO than RPG is putting the pvp system the same as in the game Lineage II.
PVP system: can hit everywhere, anywhere. can duel [accept/decline thing (which has added in L2)].
but can hit/kill everyone outside the towns. flagging [hitting] a persons makes youre name purple, if you kill the target you'll become red and if you get killed by a gaurd or person you'll drop some (expensive)stuff [depends on youre pk points]. if you flagg a person and he hits back, his name also changes to purple, than one of the 2 win, after that pvp his name will turn back to white and he gained a pvp point.
this pvpsystem is very unique, i really hoped Aion would use Lineage II gaming style, than Guildwars one.
anyways, NCsoft makes Great games, and i will keep playing them.

Like Gameloading said there will be portals to the Abyss opening radomly, you do not have to be max level to go the Abyss.
I remember somewhere a mention that the opposite faction's guards will attack you if they see you, this would suggest that you can in fact go to the other side of the world at your own risk. There is no talking, trading to the opposite faction and you can only play one race per server. I imagine you can pick different servers to play on if you choose.
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
Actually that was Caladon, not me
FInd me that quote (and if it was in regaurds to traversing an opposite faction's land), then i'll STFU end of disscusion.
I know that you can enter the abyss at lower levels, but it still won't make up for stopping Asmodians from traversing Elyos territory.
