2007 Gaming Letdowns

So the new year is coming and the mass release of games for the holiday is pretty much over.  Here is an article with a few letdowns from GameAlmighty

My 2007 Letdown:  Assassin's Creed.

here  is a game that was built on such an amazing engine and had such great potential but the gameplay was just far below what I expected. Maybe I was just the victim of over-hype but I find it hard to believe that I would have enjoyed the game more if I expected less of it. Although I still played through the game and found it entertaining, it could have been much much better in my opinion.  Hopefully the other two in the trilogy will learn from this game.

The biggest letdown for me was Blacksite: Area 51.

I mean, come on, the demo teaser for the game was so awesome. How did they screw it up between that time and when it was released.

And another thing, why the crappy multiplayer? PCs shouldn't be gimped in the same way that consoles are. . .

i would have to disagree with that article's mention of Phantom Hourglass as a letdown. I know, i know, it's just an opinion :)  I thought that game was amazing and a worthy addition to the Zelda franchise.

I also have to agree with the OP about assassin's creed. The game had so much potential and failed to deliver. BUT, I know people that played it through and absolutely loved the game, so again, it's just opinion.

I have to think a bit about my letdown and I'll get back to it here :P

    Meh.

Letdowns are almost always the result of unrealistic expectations.  I thought Mass Effect was a great game and RPG, but then I didn't know very much about it before I played it (though I have played all of Bioware's past RPGs).  There's a reason why you're not supposed to listen to hype, in the end all games are just that...games.

The last game I let hype get to me was Oblivion.  After that, I no longer pay attention to it, if anything I now approach games with a cynicism and low expectation.  For instance, I expected Mass Effect to be dumbed-down console crap catering to Halo fanboys.  I was wrong, and now consider it to be typical Bioware fare with maybe a slight action twist.

I was way hyped about mass effect ever since I heard that bioware was going to make another rpg. Although there are minor things to complain about here and there, i think the game lived up to its hype. I loved the game and am in the process of playing it through a second time.

I do agree that some games could be over-hyped, same thing goes with movies. With expectations high, they better deliver.

Letdowns of the year are definetly LAIR, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, MMO Industry, Blizzard for still refusing to admit its subscriber numbers are flawed since 90% of them are Asian dumbfire farming accounts, PS3 still not gaining any steam after a year+ and mass commercials using a Saliva song that came out in March, and Guitar Hero 3.

Halo 3.It was the exactly the same as H2 with slightly better graphics and some new maps and weapons.

AC is a close second, though i still enjoyed it,and i'm not sure how anyone could think mass effect was a let down, unless you thought it was going to be a KOTOR clone.

Quite a few people put Mass Effect down. . .

What were you guys expecting? I'm just curious. I had high expectations for the game too, but it didn't let me down. I loved it. So much, in fact, that I am on my third play-through. It's a game that I will play countless times throughout the life of my 360.

I wonder what these guys were expecting too. I think Mass Effect is fantastic.

Mass Effect needed to be on the PC really as it doesn't play well at all on the 360. My biggest letdown has to be Bioshock, after reading all the 10/10 reviews i was sooo excited to play it but the game was crap lol. My main problem with Bioshock was the fact that you wouldn't notice you were in a underwater city if it wasn't for the first level of the game, leaky pipes and windows aint good enough, i want to have parts that fall down and having to swim and underwater vehicles etc etc. My other problem with Bioshock was the so called "RPG" element ruined the gameplay finding myself constantly looking around for items and backtrackign through linear small levels, it didn't even feel like a city.

    1. Make it a FPS

    or

    2. Make it a RPG

Don't combine the 2 and create complete crap.

Mine would have to be Bioshock. The game looked very pretty but it was so repetative and boring at times. It seemed there was only a few variations of enemies. I admit, I was hyped about this game, and it certainly did not deliver.

Mass Effects because they didn't release it to the PC. Or Burning Crusade for being having the most nonexistant new content ever.

I am surprised that people are listing Mass Effect among the biggest letdowns.  I thought it was a great game.  Someone commented about Oblivion being a letdown and Bioshock, as well?  Wow.  I have to wonder what people are expecting if they are disappointed by these game....

You're criticizing them because they do not openly state that a number of accounts are farmers? wow..I just can't get over that one. and also it's subscriber numbers are not flawed since every farmer fits in the definition of the subscriber. and aside from that Blizzard has mentioned how many farmers have been banned multiple times.

sorry, the console version had little to no effect on the PC version since the console version has it's own gameplay speed that is different from PC.

I was pretty disappointed with Oblivion, too. A console game shallowly ported to the PC; Oblivion is exactly why I am skeptical whenever a game gets ported from a console. I'm also disappointed that Bioware has stopped being a PC-first gaming company, not to mention that they were also bought by EA.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was a mild let down, but still had its enjoyable points. Hmm... HL2, Ep2 was enjoyable but short... and after waiting that long for it; the letdown was in its length, not its content.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Oblivion was developed simultaneously, it's not ported. and again there is no evidence whatsoever that any changes to the game was the result of consoles, especialy considering morrowind was on the xbox as well.

ummmm well of all the games i was looking forward too they all meet my expectaions. Well i guess vanguard and TBC didnt. Vanguard was bad at release and TBC was the same crap i had done for 60 lvls.

I had HUGE expections for mass effect i loved everything bioware has done adn i put them on a higher standard and they delivered. Now i dont have a killer gaming computer so the problems of some lag here and there in ME i dont really care as my comp wouldnt have handled it. I think some of the poeple who say it shouldve been on PC are mad that it wasnt, have barely or never played it, and are just saying what people who are nit picky said about the game.

Halo 3 egh im a halo fanboi so i thought it was great. I mean its a fps what do you expect for a sequal of a fps? of course its gonna be like halo 2 with new maps. i think the online is a lot better and the forge is amazing.

I think assassins creed and bioshock are great too. I dont have time for more then one game to have a whole lot of side quest i have a life. I am fine with games like bioshock or assassins creed not having them. ill play ME ES4:O or a mmo for side quest.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

I loved Oblivion cause it felt very much like GTA fantasy, it has it's problems but what game doesn't, i do also think it removed lots of annoying features of Morrowind like level grinding and having to run everywhere.

  • DraenorDraenor Member UncommonPosts: 7,918

Oblivion did not come out in 2007.

I have played Assassin's Creed and do plan on buying it, but i haven't played it enough to comment on whether or not it is my letdown of the year...if I had to pick one game though, based purely on reviews I would have to say Two Worlds.  I didn't purchase any bad games this year, I only buy games that I know I'm going to play for a very long time.  Right now Call of Duty 4 is my baby.
