Pre-Luclin EQ was the best MMO I ever played. Was a true sandbox world with different cities and cultures and factions. Quests were there, but not too numerous, and you had to sort of look for them. Players approached the game like it was a world, and not like today's linear amusement park tours that pass for MMO's.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
DAoC, pre ToA, post Classics... best combat mechanics in general, best RvR. The game where, when the call went out to defend the realm, hundreds responded.
Me too. It let you do so much for so long. Such a pity SOE so royally screwed it up. I hope that someday, somehow John Smedley, Julio Torres, Nancy Macintyre and all the other experts at SOE and LA will be punished for destroying this ownderful, innocent game.
Pre CU/NGE SWG for me, basically just because it was so different.
But the best of todays standard MMO (WoW Clone types) has to be LOTRO, although I'm going to give VG another try just because it has so many classes and the crafting is a bit more involved than LOTRO's awful crafting system (How does a tiny shard of a gem make armour uber, or how does a spiders eye help to make a better scroll - nonsense!!)
I am surprised CoV/CoH is not getting more name-checks - sure, a very limited game but what it does, it does very well, and it seems to have major fans outside this site.
Would be Runescape, yes the graphics look really REALLY crappy, but the gameplay that the game had about 8 years ago was wonderfull. This game didn't have classes which I loves, just do what you like and train it. Crafting was also quite nice.
Second would be UO, but back then I really couldn't come up with the money so I haven't played it a lot.
Then third would be Pristontale back in the early days, I played this game for about 4 years going on and off, really wanting to try it again.
Then final WoW in the first year or so, back then when the honor system was fun and rankings were only for the best and most addicted players!
ermm i think runescape has to be one of the best yet one of the most annoying lol it had great gameplay for its time and its uber adictive even if its crappy lol
Helbreath, only game that has ever made me so excited that all I did was think about it and wrote "HB" to every school book I had. Best community, great pvp and ofc. the greatest memories.
Seriously, the game is so good it must have been a fluke. Hopefully, it was not and mythic will pull off making another amazing game , Called WARHAMMER. I can hope.

For me, EQ pre-Luclin was amazing. Was always a blast to log on, servers were active. competition was feirce. Just a great time. THe lore was my favorite part. They always found a way for you to be interested in the gods, cities and factions, and the story line that surrounded that.
Anarchy Online would be my other, PreShadowlands of course. I had the best time with this game, graphics were amazing and I loved the OT/Clan war storyline. Fighting over Tarasque and Notum Wars land control was so much fun. The game could of used better AI via EQ for mobs and pulling. But overrall was a fun game. Could always get good gear and didnt need to fight over mobs to do so. Than Shadowlands hit and Im not sure whey they took it in the direction but ruined the game imo.
Since than, have had trouble finding something that doesnt feel like I've already been there, done that.
First MMO i played was Ragnarok Online. Lots of fun memories, made lots of friends, had awesome fun PVPing. i didnt even need to hit the lvl-cap to be up there with the best players.
But i'd have to say WoW is the best MMO i've ever played, most rewarding and time spent on.
Pre-BC - Just the joy of Tanking 40-man raids and getting new epics everyweek tanking, MC, Onyxia, BWL, and getting my uber rare Zulian Tiger Mount on horde side,
Post-BC - Top-dpsing Karazhan and Gruul's Lair as a Fury Warrior, loved being ontop of dps charts : )
Then i quit WoW after raiding got HARD, and progress slowed to a crawl, making the game really really boring.
Another Pre-CU jedi here. SWG was my first and it was the best. I have tried WoW, LoTRO, City Of Heroes/Villians and the beta for Pirates of the Burning Sea, and even the Sims Online lol. None compare to the glory days of SWG.

For me it would be FFXI (which is why im going back to it after i finish my uni work for Xmas break!)
I have subbed to it the longest out of any MMO as:
EverCrack.. Errr, Everquest!
I took so many "Dirt Naps", I don't have enough fingers and toes to count em all in the 8 plus years I played!!
Now..
WoW.. not even close to my ole' time love - EQ, but it does have other perks I am enjoying.
"Huntress"
The early days of UO were the best. Honorable mention go to DAoC and EQ2. As of today Vanguard gets my vote.

i agree...
uo used to be awesome until they made trammel.
Got to say WoW, great atmosphere and feel to a game, thou most fun i had prolly in Asherons Call 2, The best friends and clan mates. IoP
