Whats living in America really like?

I've wanted to buy like a Holiday home in America and eventually living there like Miami or something just because the day i was there it felt very 80's still from all the style and i love that. However while i've been to many places in America i've only been in tourist areas and obviously havn't seen what living there is really live. All i seem to see on the TV like Top Gear or the News is like red necks chasing you down because you don't agree with them or mado chrsitian religious freaks. Also lots of shootings and lots of shanty town type places full of poor people comiting lots of crime and that where if you go as a white person you'd be shot.

Just wondering what it's really like to live there because all i see on TV is the bad and all i see when i'm there is the good, apart from the horrible oversized tourist food portions where the starters are the size of a cow.

So just wondering how do these things i see on TV living in the UK really effect your ever day life there? I mean wil i have to care about the whole politics there and will i be hunted down by rednecks everyday cause i don't believe in god lol. Will i break my leg and have to pay 4 million in fees lol...

So whats it actually like to live there?

"The Man" is always looking out for are unwell-being.  The man who wants to horde money and ships our economy overseas, while not spending the mass riches he accumulates that is causing our current depression.  The one who has made the job market so fierce having a 3.7 GPA Bachelors of Science Degree means nothing to an employer.  The only relief we have from "The Man" is from the fact in a couple decades our economy may be as bad as mexicos and people will be looking to us for cheap labor.

Is the UK filled with bucktoothed scurvy stricken people with something shoved up their ass?

I suppose that answers your question.

These are quite possibly the worst replies to an honest thread I've seen in a while.

Miami is a pretty nice city. Florida in general is a fantastic place to live.  You don't have to worry about rednecks at all, that would be say, more in central america, and only in very rural towns.

Miami does have a great deal of cubans though, but they are mostly pretty nice.  Just a few hour drive will get you to Orlando, which is one of my favorite cities in the US. They have alot of theme parks, and the town stays really clean, mainly because of the tourism. Everyone is so nice there.

Miami beach is fantastic. If you look around enough you'll find some nice nude beaches if you're into that kinda thing.  The sand and surf is awesome, and it's definitely worth it.

I wouldn't take the new to heart, I don't even watch the news because all they want to report on are the bad things. Unless theres a "miracle" story, everything else talks about what bad is happening and political problems and a bunch of other things blown completely out of proportion, because if there weren't major problems, they'd have nothing to report on.

Other notable cities you should look at would be New York (theres truly no place like it), Seattle, Phoenix, Boston and Los Angeles.  If you're looking to buy a home I would consider buying in texas, as housing prices are extremely low in comparison to other states.

As for the not believing in god thing, don't sweat it. The U.S. is a melting pot of race and religion.  Large cities are full of crazy religions and the like.  Hey if scientologists actually set up shop without being tarred and feathered, then you should have no problem fitting in with your beliefs.  Not believing in god still stands a whole lot higher then scientology in my book.

    Cheers

Ugh! I personally can't stand the heat from Miami, FL. I moved to GA because the weather is nicer, but I'm starting to miss IL ALOT!

You need to speak Spanish if you live in Miami.

So whats it actually like to live there?

I think the United States is the greatest country in the world, as a person who has traveled throughout the world, mainly Europe.

If you're interested in a holiday home, I recommend Miami Beach.  I love soutchbeach and I was considering vacationing there for New Years Eve, actually.

I know people (business associate) who lived in Miami and described the people there as "nasty."

What is it like to live here?

The American people are so diverse it is difficult to generalize.  We all have come here from some where else in the sense there are no "native" Americans.  Even "native" Americans originated in Asia.  In that sense, we are all immigrants.

You will find American people to be generally tolerant and open-minded, welcoming of foreigners, and enterprising people.  I believe Americans are the most productive people in the world; we tend to work hard and smart.  Things tend to be fast-paced, and most of us require a lot of personal space.  Our cafe culture is not like it is in, say, Europe or Turkey; although I would love to joined a Florentine Camerata.  Americans tend to be highly individualistic, which I think is a great thing:  concepts of individual rights, liberties, and self-determination.  We tend to be risk-takers and adventurous in our relationships, businesses, and life.

Culturally, I think it is fair to say we have a conservative undertone.  We are not necessarily as worldly or as informed as many people around the world are concerning global issues and events.

Economically, a lot of anxiety exists today.  Obtaining gainful employment is increasingly competitive, the value of the American dollar and purchasing power is weak (which attracts a lot of tourists who come here with empty bags and fill up inexpensive goods to bring home), and income inequalities are growing. Wealth inequality is really growing perhaps faster than any time in history.

I hope you decide to get a holiday home.

I don't care whether it is an amazing or horrible place to live, I will visit the USA one day for the NY 6-Flags theme park!!

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

    Things are rotten in Denmark.

While on the surface people go about their day to day life like there is nothing wrong, it's done with what seems to be an increasing desperation to be willfully ignorant of the political situation in the country. The recession that we are in, the sub-prime cock-up, and the Governments attempts to bail out their Banker, and Hedge Fund buddies at the expense of the American people, that in some cases were blatantly lied to to get them to refinance their home.

If you really want to get a vacation home somewhere in the US, this would be the time to do it. With all the foreclosures going on, banks and real estate cos are looking to unload the excess homes. Plus the falling dollar means your money will go that much farther in comparison.

So I say go for it. Of the many problems the country does face, being chased down by hillbillies isn't one of them, unless you're in some backwoods rural area, then you might want to watch your ass. ::::03::

  • Well these replies got freaky fast.

Well, I live in Florida and travel around it pretty frequently, so I'll try to be of some help. Florida is very much a melting pot of cultures. You do have the 'redneck' element, but they're not really overwhelming or anything. If you're afraid of that sort of thing just stay away from the panhandle and center of the state, otherwise, yeah, you'll see some of it, but no more than anywhere else in the country. You've got alot of people from other parts of the U.S. who move here. Overall, the weather is nice if it's your sort of thing, and cost of living is much much less than an area like New England.

There are three big cities and alot of little areas in between you could be looking at. Miami has been mentioned, but it's also kind of a melting pot and you can live there without speaking a word of Spanish, it depends entirely on the area. Orlando is interesting, I personally hate the city for its bizarre road layout but there's alot of stuff to see there. Tampa is also really cool, has quite a few nice cultural venues, and the bay is a real draw for alot of people.

Just to put it out there, hurricanes are a fact of life here. Don't freak out too badly, just remember that they are there and will inevitably hit the state. We all just live with that fact here. I've been through so many hurricanes they don't even freak me out, and honestly, it's hard to say how bad they're going to be. Sometimes they're just like really bad storms, other times they deal out significant property damage. Honestly, everywhere has some kind of natural disaster, hurricanes are ours. I prefer them to volcanoes at least :P

well, its not all bad living here

Everything is available here, absolutely anything you could ever need (or not need for that matter)

however there are plenty of downsides, for instance there is a high concentration of closed minded, or downright uneducated, people

Actually the dollar isn't failing. It's just staying the same while every other developed nation is going up, which really isn't that much better if you really think about it.

America has it all; culturally, geographically, politically, everything. If you live in the right place it can be a wonderful experience. Buy in the wrong area, it will be horrible.

Do not trust the news in the United States, everyone has their own political agenda and only report on the bad things. Most Americans don't give a flip on most issues and generally stay quiet and mind their own business.

So generally, America is a decent country. I suggest  Bozeman, Montana.  Beautiful  city.  Avoid the major cities like the plague,  trust me.

Trust me the cost of living there is nothing compared to London, a 1 bed flat here could get me a mansion in Florida lol. Also buying things like food and drink and even petrol is like 1/4 of the price than it is here.

I hope you find your way in religion some day (the right way). But living in America definately depends on where in America you live.

Seattle (thats where I live): Get used to rain, and alot of big towns. When your on the west side of the mountains there is no farming (basicly) once you cross Snoqualmie pass its farms all through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Oregon.  Seattle area is where alot of Japense people immigrate to from Japan, but its not like half Japanese or anything. You should find good technollagy , Microsoft originated in Washington, Nintendo's main office in Washington, etc. You should also find good coffee

Im not so sure about the rest, because I don't live there.

If you want to live on the wild side move to Arizona it has it all,Sonoran desert, snow skiing, vast forest's, abundant wildlife, the Grand canyon, large citie's,and close proximity to Cali,Vegas, and Baja.

What is it like living here in America? well i have been here all my life and i have never seen anyone murdered killed in car acceidents yes, generally everyone leaves everyone else alone, its a huge country with lots of dark history and secrets but has also produced a great and sucessful nation,  The people work hard and play hard, for the most part law and order rules,  stay away from the inner citiy's and you should be safe enough.

You mean the "goverment of the people  by the people for the people" I would suggest that the American people would be guilty of the charge of "destroying itself" After all they continue to vote in the same politicians decade after decade if they would wake up and vote in new blood with new ideas and not contaminated by the system of largess and pork barrel then the system might change.

The dollar is falling, and you measure the dollar's fall relative to other currencies (please see this December 31st Bloomberg article www.bloomberg.com/apps/news, explaining how the "dollar fell" against the euro and the yen).  The Federal Reserve is most likely to cut interest rates soon because the U.S. economy is slowing, which will further reduce the dollar's value.

The housing trends in the United States is something you might want to be aware of if you're considering making a purchase.  Americans are currently fleeing the Midwest and East-coast states for the south and west, where taxes, housing prices tend to be lower.  Florida and Nevada were previously the fastest-growing states in the U.S. but growth is beginning to slow and states such as Idaho, Utah, and Georgia are beginning to accelerate.

Now is good opportunity for Europeans to purchase housing in the U.S. because the European economy is growing, the Euro currency is strong, and U.S. home prices are in decline.  Best of luck!

We have too much of everything.   Prepare to be bombarded with choices.    Crest whitening, Crest Super Fresh Whitening, Crest Tarter Control Super Fresh Whitening,  Crest  Cinnamon Super Fresh Tarter Control Whitening.  Crest, Pepsodent, Aqua Fresh, Colgate, Arm and Hammer (and more) each brand fighting for space on the shelves.  We have more choices of toothpaste than we have teeth.   This pattern is repeated in almost every product.    From canned beans to feminine protection.   We are rampant consumers.

    What's living in America like?

    GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!!

Seriously, if it weren't for my ex-wife having equal custody of my son, I'd be out of here with him. This place is a hole, and it gets worse every day.

One person bitches about something, and they pass a law against it. Everything caters to the over-paid maggots and their over-spending baby-factories with their damn SUVs chattering on their cell phones instead of watching where they're driving.

You cannot say anything that may offend anyone else, or you will be sued or arrested on some bullshit PC charge.

Yeah....no one watches the news, because it's "all bad" stuff. And this is how the government continues to whittle away our rights every day, because no one wants to see it.

Our votes don't matter...politicians are selected, rather than elected. It's all about money, and who is going to cater to those who have it. And of course one of the sickening things is, some of the ones with the most money are mega-church cults of neo-xtian zealotry. (I live in Colorado Springs, I know what I'm talking about here).

We think we can do whatever we want wherever in the world we want, and get away with it. We impose our will on other countries at whim, all for the sake of "freedom", which we have forgotten the meaning of.

AND.....if you don't agree with the ones in power, if you DARE to say a negative word about this "Great Nation", you are a terrorist!!! You are evil, and should be imprisoned!

I hate this damn place, and I want out, but I am stuck here. The problem is, where would I go? There seems to be nowhere in the world that the US hasn't wrapped in it's slimy, money-grubbing tentacles (or invaded / plans to invade).

There's your answer, from someone who has a job, and a real life, and actually pays attention to what's going on around here.
