Miami has a lot of crime. Also there are apparently a lot of non English speaking residents which complicates life for you if you don't speak Spanish. I caught an episode of "Hogan knows best" while channel surfing, where he went into a GNC nutrition store located in a Mall, and the clerk only spoke Spanish, which Hogan does not, so he couldn't get any of his questions answered. Freaking amazing.
You might want to consider San Diego. The weather is comfortable all year round and when I lived there I didn't encounter any language issues. Crime was average. Southern California residents can be odd at times, not the most trustworthy because they are very " Me" oriented, but I suspect Miami is similar. These parts of America tend to be magnets for persons who relocate because they didn't fit in wherever they came from. You get the good with the bad, the independent explorer friendly types, and the weirdo scammer backstabber types. Just be prudent about extending your trust.
I've wanted to buy like a Holiday home in America and eventually living there like Miami or something just because the day i was there it felt very 80's still from all the style and i love that. However while i've been to many places in America i've only been in tourist areas and obviously havn't seen what living there is really live. All i seem to see on the TV like Top Gear or the News is like red necks chasing you down because you don't agree with them or mado chrsitian religious freaks. Also lots of shootings and lots of shanty town type places full of poor people comiting lots of crime and that where if you go as a white person you'd be shot. Just wondering what it's really like to live there because all i see on TV is the bad and all i see when i'm there is the good, apart from the horrible oversized tourist food portions where the starters are the size of a cow. So just wondering how do these things i see on TV living in the UK really effect your ever day life there? I mean wil i have to care about the whole politics there and will i be hunted down by rednecks everyday cause i don't believe in god lol. Will i break my leg and have to pay 4 million in fees lol...
So whats it actually like to live there?
I think the United States is the greatest country in the world, as a person who has traveled throughout the world, mainly Europe.
If you're interested in a holiday home, I recommend Miami Beach. I love soutchbeach and I was considering vacationing there for New Years Eve, actually.
I know people (business associate) who lived in Miami and described the people there as "nasty."
What is it like to live here?
The American people are so diverse it is difficult to generalize. We all have come here from some where else in the sense there are no "native" Americans. Even "native" Americans originated in Asia. In that sense, we are all immigrants.
You will find American people to be generally tolerant and open-minded, welcoming of foreigners, and enterprising people. I believe Americans are the most productive people in the world; we tend to work hard and smart. Things tend to be fast-paced, and most of us require a lot of personal space. Our cafe culture is not like it is in, say, Europe or Turkey; although I would love to joined a Florentine Camerata. Americans tend to be highly individualistic, which I think is a great thing: concepts of individual rights, liberties, and self-determination. We tend to be risk-takers and adventurous in our relationships, businesses, and life.
Culturally, I think it is fair to say we have a conservative undertone. We are not necessarily as worldly or as informed as many people around the world are concerning global issues and events.
Economically, a lot of anxiety exists today. Obtaining gainful employment is increasingly competitive, the value of the American dollar and purchasing power is weak (which attracts a lot of tourists who come here with empty bags and fill up inexpensive goods to bring home), and income inequalities are growing. Wealth inequality is really growing perhaps faster than any time in history.
I hope you decide to get a holiday home.
Wow i applaud you for backing your country but there would be a hell of a lot of people outside America who don't see it the way you do. Someone mentioned that the US has a lot of history ,i would like to know where its all is then.
To put yourself in the same category as native Indians who come from the land you call America is wrong. You are the true immigrants to that land along with the thousands of African slave you so tolerantly bought/ ship over from Africa lol.
If i go along with your statement that everyone on US soil is a immigrant then every single person outside of Africa is a immigrant because that's where man first came from like it or not DNA proves this. I could go on and on about America and its gunslinging god fearing hypocritical attitude to anything that does not come from the good ole USA.
Lets take the carnage of New Orleans and the work being put into helping those poor "black" people rebuild their lives..now lets look at the work and effort put into the hurricanes and so far in Florida where there are plenty of middle/old age "white" who voted for dubya lol...you see the America you want to see but their are thousands across America and the world that see it for what it is...ill let you guess that one.
America cant compete with Europe in looks and history and if you have travel so much in Europe then you obviously have not been to the right places.
however there are plenty of downsides, for instance there is a high concentration of closed minded, or downright uneducated, people + you're ruled by republican government.

I was born in the US, lived in the UK, and now my husband (who is a Scot) and I are back in the US. We'll be here another two years, probably. There is very little difference in ammenities, overall. I buy the same sort food I did in England (though most meat tastes better there). In fact, a lot is exactly the same, just renamed. I can even get my PG Tips and McVities here! Yay. I don't think anyone's asked me if I believe in God in either the UK or the US, or decided to drag me into an unwanted political discussion.. so no worries there. People seem to be friendly or not friendly to the same degree. Really, there is so little difference in convenience and availability of things that it's hardly worth noticing.
When we leave the US, it's likely to be for either Germany or Holland. The hubby hasn't decided yet. I've been to both and there really isn't that much culture shock, even in non English speaking countries in Europe. There's always Sky TV, I guess. My brother and sister in law are in Hungary for a couple of years and they have a bit of a rough time, comparitively speaking. They've been there nearly six months and still haven't sorted out internet to the house.
One thing I can tell you, though, the GBP will buy you bundles of USD!
Keep in mind also that the kind of people you see here in this thread is literally less then .001% of the population. Fanatics are fanatics. A country is a country. The people here are as they are in many modern countries across the globe. Diverse. Big cities are some of the greatest places if you're into that sort of thing. The US literally has something for everyone. Canada is a pretty good country as well. A little cold in the winters but beautiful all around.
In the REAL AMERICA people don't sit and have conversations about the government every 5 minutes unless they're obsessed or so into politics that they can't live a normal life. In every country you find those that love their life and hate it. I love mine personally, america is a fine place. Before you decide on a state I would consider taking a tour across the country to see what it offers. Like you mentioned before all you hear is bad things, but when you're here all you see is good things. Thats the way it is, people see what they want to see. You could come here and be much happier then most of the people who reply on this thread. You make your own choices in life, don't let them make it for you.
America is pretty diverse. You have to have a high tolerance for all nationalities - which isn't a problem for Americans, but is indeed more difficult for people from other nations.
The US is a great place to be when you're wanting action and speed, but not so much when you desire a nice place to relax.
Watch out for the girls though, they suck compared to European women.
If you don't like it, don't play it. 800 million subscribers cannot lie
Wow, these are horrible, horrible replies. Honestly OP, America is not like what people make it out to be. It's nice here, just get used to seeing a lot of football, prepare for people to poke fun at you for being British, and you should love it here.

I dont like a lot of cities mostly because im sort of a dessert rat, and dont like cold, any form of moisture from the sky, and traffic.
New mexico is actually a very popular vacation spot even among A lists Julia roberts, stephen spielberg, and a lot of celebrities have homes here.
We have hiking, fishing, lakes to go boating on, mountains, caves to go spulunking in. An active local music scene in albuquerque, and a crap load of new movies are being shot here. 3:10 to yuma was shot here, the new indiana jones is being shot here, the hills have eyes was shot here, a lot of movies are.
We are also a really cheap place to live with all the amenities like high speed internet, and everything the modern man needs.
I love it here and wont move ever.

I like dessert, too... especially ice cream! You forgot skiing, Vampir. I love skiing in New Mexico, especially Taos. I spent two years working at Taos Ski Valley when I was 18 and loved every second of it. I also lived in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe for a few years and enjoyed it very much.

and we have such attractions as carlsbad caverns, Lincoln country(billy the kids grave), some of the best art musuems in the country, lots of old ruins.
And if you like to get a little rough and crazy their is always espanola..........

Id have to say Texas is the best country...oops i mean state to live in. The only bad part about Texas is UT, but i rather live here then Oklahoma. Cant have everything. The panhandle has great weather, nice people, good food. And the mountins in both New Mexico and Colorado are about a 6 hour drive from Amarillo and lubbck maby 7 from lubbck. I mean Texas is a vaction in itself theres Dallas with the cowboys, rangers, mavs, stars, six flags and hurricane harbor. San Antonio with another six flags park and tons of historic attractions. Nasa at houston. Stuff at Austin. And of course the beauitful South Padre island. Also just north of San Antonio is a water park i cant spell thats been rated the number 1 in the world like the past 6 years and i can vouch for that. Plus all that political crap, well Texans dont take that shit, we are very republican and of course a Bush supporting state. So if you dont like Bush i you can just not tell people or find a different state lol.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

I'd stay out of El Paso though. That place is a dump. The best view is looking over the Mexican border at Juarez.

Oklahoma ain't all that bad. A tad boring, but it's okay. The people here are nice. I've never had hardly a problem with anyone.
And the cost of living in Oklahoma is great. A nice place to buy a home and settle down.
My friend lives in the Ft. Lauderdale area. She doesn't speak Spanish, and she feels like an outcast half the time because she doesn't.
I was watching (Hulk) Hogan Knows Best reality show, and the family moved to Miami. He was walking around the city and openly wondered if anyone spoke English.
Take that as you will.
The U.S. has pretty much everything. If you like big cities, it has big cities. If you like more rural areas where you don't need a permit to cut down and burn your own trees on your property, it has those places, too.
Every person I know who moved to California from a different state moved back a year or so later.
You see things like the Hollywood walk of fame and things like that on TV. In reality, most of those places are dumps filled with drugs and hookers. It's arguable whether drugs and hookers are bad things, but the places are still dumps.
USA is a nice country. Many people there do not believe in Darwin's theory of evolution, for instance, and they teach the Bible as a science book in some schools. They love guns and almost anybody can have one at home. And loaded. Half of their population support or have supported Bush as their president, a man that likes bombing other countries to get their oil or just because they don't believe in a christian god. Only 15% of the USA citizens have a passport, meaning 85% or the population has never been abroad (that's 2005 figures, maybe now it's better).

Not everyone loves and owns guns. I've never owned a gun nor felt compelled to buy one. Although if others own a gun it doesn't bother me. The Bible isn't taught in public schools, only religious private ones. Last I saw the approval rating for Bush in the states is under 20% now (although congress is worse). I've been abroad but can sure understand why others wouldn't care to travel to other countries. The country is fairly vast and there is a lot to do. I sure don't feel compelled to travel outside the country right now. It's not like Europe where countries are much smaller and easier to travel among.
The US bombs other countries to get their oil and because they don't believe in a Christian God. Yep that's the reason. /rolls eyes
That's probably true. But it's harder to capture the intent of a person than if you were there in person. Of all the emoticons we can use there are a few that are glaringly missing (laughing, sarcasm, rolling eyes)

/rolls eyes
I think you fell into the Sarchasm, Alekhin!
That's probably true. But it's harder to capture the intent of a person than if you were there in person. Of all the emoticons we can use there are a few that are glaringly missing (laughing, sarcasm, rolling eyes)
Whats living in America really like?
OK, you know how England is sort of like France - except without all the Frenchmen?
Well, America is pretty much like that - but even better.
Oklahoma ain't all that bad. A tad boring, but it's okay. The people here are nice. I've never had hardly a problem with anyone.
And the cost of living in Oklahoma is great. A nice place to buy a home and settle down.
Yeah Oklahoma is pretty nice. If you live near norman youll have a nice supply of sports to watch mainly football.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms
