To me, Blizzard simply took a lot of 'good' features from other games and bundled them into WoW.

Will AoC and WAR take the next step and learn from any areas that WoW experienced success/failure?  I hope so.  I hope they use at least some standard, familiar, tried/true features from previous games... then add to that to make their own unique game/experience.

    ...

My initial responses to AoC or WAR being called 'WoW clones'... I doubt it.  Again, there will be things that seem familiar, but you can't really say they are clones based on similar features.

The combat system in AoC seems very different from WoW.

I have no idea about WAR, to be honest.

Graphics... both games crush WoW in this department.  A previous poster stated that WoW resembled something that Disney drew up a long, long time ago.  I personally thought that Blizzard should've fired the elementary arts/crafts department from Crayola a long time ago and look for new artists... so I agree.  What remains to be seen, however, is how these graphics will play out with the customer base.  What I mean is, look at the types of systems that can successfully run WoW (very low end) and then look at what it may take (hardware wise) to run AoC or WAR.  These other games may limit their customer base on hardware spec's alone... because I doubt a lot of folks are going to upgrade their PC's to play these games.  (Think of the nightmares Vanguard had with performance... even with people who had top of the line hardware.)

    ...

Is every other game out there gonna be a WoW clone from now on out?  To me, they are all FFXI or SWG clones, in certain ways.  Why?  Because those were my first MMO's.

    ...

AoC and WAR will carve their own paths.  I doubt AoC will be successful.  WAR has a better shot overall.  And that's just because people are sick of grinding gear, rep, honor, and dungeons in WoW... and they want to do it in another game for a while.

Just a quick question to clarify something. Your doubt is based on the concept that "people are sick of grinding gear, rep, honor, and dungeons in WoW... and they want to do it in another game for a while."

You dont think AoC will be successful, but WAR will? So that means you think that in Age of Conan there is grinding rep and honor? You think that Age of Conan has the same dungeons as WoW? That it is the same game as WoW? That would then imply that WAR is non-grinding, dungeons that arent the same as WoW?

Dont get me wrong, it's all good to have different opinions, but I'm just seriously confused by the logic behind yours is all, and hoping you could elaborate on it a bit. Personally, my belief is that they'll both be pretty appealing to audiences. WAR for it's likely polish, and accessibility to many players, and AoC because it's combat system will try to break the traditional MMO mold.

    Cheers,

From what I have heard, Funcom is trying to make AoC as non-gear dependent as possable.  If they do it right the game should NOT require hours of gear grinding.  And I only hope that there will be no PvP gear grinding, as soon as WoW changed that honor system, PvEers started to grind battlegrounds just to get that 'easier' gear.

My decision still stays with AoC.  I was looking at getting WAR, but AoC and its new features has changed that.
