Personally I don't care if the missions are 'go out and kill x amount of x to get x' or 'collect x amount of x to get x'. If its done really well and is actually fun. I hated this system and in some ways still do but since playing a few different MMO's and more recently Tabula Rasa, if the game's mechanics are fun and varied then completing the most basic mission types can still be enjoyable. I am giving WAR a go purely because I have 10 guildies playing. Have a great group of gamers and even an average grind fest MMO can be enjoyable.
I would just like to know what MMO's doe's this person find that are not 'cookie cutters"?
I don't post nearly as much as I use to because I hang around the Warhammer Alliance forums. The developers post there regularily, like they use to do here when Richard Mythic was still around.: www.warhammeralliance.com/
I kind of hate to say it, but Mythic has done what they said the y would not do and have 'favorite' sites they like to visit. Which is why so many people wanted a official forum instead of fan forums... but thats another topic/thread.
And this topic comes up there fairly often and I must say, even the most 'innovative' new MMO is generally based on its predecessors.
Look at WoW, all it did was stream line the MMO genre: It took a Honda and turned it into a 'rice rocket'. Not innovative but appealing none the less.
Its kind of like walking, there may be other ways to get around, but eventually your going to need to walk once in a while. Its boring but reliable, and fun if you have the right company
All cakes are the same! FACT: Contain calories. FACT: Are eaten. FACT: Are baked. FACT: Are delicious. If you look at anything in broad enough strokes, of course it will look the same. Every MMORPG is going to have common elements - that is what defines a genre. Just because there are quests, levels, and whatever else you are complaining about, does not mean there exists no innovation or differences. It is all about the execution. All in all, a fairly useless topic. It does not even attempt to explain what qualifies as innovative, probably because the OP did not think that far. It is easy to want innovation, but try coming up with some... it is not easy.

The cake is a lie!!
OMG THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!!
Playing: Everthing Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW. I have played every MMO that has ever come out.
If I would put myself in the shoes of a psychiatrist I would say the OP isn't defending any points or ideas. In stead he's looking for confirmation of his devotion to this new upcomming game, just to make sure he's not the only one looking forward to this game, like said before he will be the first one to log on.
But hey...I'm not a psychiatrist and I don't have any knowledge on that field
I don't care too much about the levels, skills or how to obtain them. What I care about is the core, the meaning of the game. The reason why you log on...and that's because you have a war to fight. It's very simple, I'm logging in to take side, and to defend my/our honor. Hopefully against people with at least as much honor. Someting I missed in the "game we all have to shut up about"
I'm looking forward to this game, hopefully it won't let me down

Kind of like an MMO.
I'm betting he is a Darkfall fan. Of course, being a fan of Darkfall is like being a fan of a puff of steam - it will never amount to anything and will eventually dissapate in the wind.

Exactly what I am looking for as well.
Just about every MMO has the whole "kill, loot, level" treadmill. If I were looking for more of that, I might as well stick with WoW. However, I am looking for something different. If that difference is in the form of a fresh, exciting approach to PvP, it will have me hooked. Meaningful PvP is the #1 thing I will be looking for in this game. If it doesn't have it, I'll move on.

Mythic just had a dev chat here not long ago They are not ignoring mmorpg.com. Any important game information will be made available on the warherald. Official boards turn into whine-fests..Nerf this...buff that...oooo noes I'll quit if you don't change ____
i am totally kicking myself for even considering a reply to this dismal attempt at a troll thread... but, it is very clear you have absolutely no idea what WAR is or based on and cookie-cut could not be further from the truth. Maybe it is level based but so what, this game revolves around player driven conflict, not some mindless PVE grind. Course, if they decide to charge 20 a month for it i will just find another mmo with a more reasonable monthly price.
How is it NOT cookie-cut?
FACT: level based
FACT: Quests to attain new level, items, gear ..etc.
FACT: run to location x to find y item and return to location x
FACT: Talk with NPC A for a quest before you can proceed to NPC B
FACT: press either left or right mouse button and/or number keys 1-0 along shift or cntrl key in order to perform an action
FACT: Player Vs Player or Realm Vs Realm
...im sorry how is this not cookie-cut? and they want me/us to PAY more than the standard 14.95
...pfft like i said cookie-cut level based MMO nothing new!
Your logic is flawed.
Fact: All cars are the same.
Fact: They Have an engine.
Fact: They have seats.
Fact They are faster than walking.
See how that logic is flawed?
Warhammer has many features that are common in mmo's like leveling and questing, but the thing that sets this mmo apart is RVR. In RvR you fight for your realm to gain victory points in order to gain zone control. If your side wins all of the zones it opens up your enimy capital city to attack. You will fight hundreds of players at a time You can level up from RVR. There is lots of open world RVR with keeps and siege weapons. Mythic knows how to do this well considering it was a huge success in DAOC. This game is aimed for the people that enjoy large scale PVP.
what do all you complainers want? list something new in detail that u'd want to see in a MMORPG that would change everything but still work in an mmo world! comon...uhm? no ideas? i like the lvl based, progression fueled, cookie cutting game play that WaR might be, with a touch of evolution ofcourse. it kills the time nicely while i wait for my death in approximately 50years. to me, its what obviously works for the general public (aka WoWs gameplay style and its 9million+ players).
other games r in production that will be alittle different and more your flavour. why bash what WaR *might* be. just look away and let the other millions of ppl look on.
We wont see any new MMO developments for a long time, but I believe this game will redefine the concept of PVP and I am happy with that. It may be a cookie-cutter game but if you think every MMO that has came out has been. If you dont like the system of the MMOs maybe you should give real life a chance
It's a business. They're going to sell you every iteration of the genre they possibly can. No business is going to spend millions of dollars making something completely new and HOPE that it does well.
When computers become more powerful and programming gets easier, then we'll see some really interesting games.
