Speculation: A Reason Why Conan Was Pushed Back...

i_own_ui_own_u Member UncommonPosts: 314

I think one of the reasons it is being pushed back is to get it closer to WAR. It's like the Halo 3/ PS3 launch. Back in 2006 Halo 3 was supposed to have the same launch date as the PS3, but Sony caught this and pushed it back, as did Microsoft. It's a marketing technique. I think this is at least ONE of the reasons.

Ideas?

That doesnt make much sense to me, why would they want to launch closer to thier stiffest competition for 2008.

I would think either company would want to launch first to grab market share and hope to retain subs when the other launches.

I suspect the game just was not ready.  There is no reason to push it back closer to its biggest competition.  You want to get as much of a jump on it as you can.  Microsoft knew this will with the 360 versus the PS3 and it paid off in spades.

Funcom has a major stigma to overcome and they want to do this game right.  Average games who do not follow this stuff closely (which is the majority of the people who will buy it) will be hesitant to trust Funcom so they have to make sure this goes off without a hitch.  I hope they succeed even if I am more interested in WAR (never liked the Conan mythos myself- I find it 2-dimensional in nature).

Lets hope that we'll have something interesting and new to play this year. Every title launching has the potential to flop. I'm hoping for the opposite for all games of course.

    I guess time will tell.

We can speculate all day about the potential status of the game upon release but we'll only know once it's out. The reasons behind the delays are not something that worries me, I'm not a FC shareholder, I'm just waiting for their finished product.

2 months is enough time to polish and remove small bugs. cant work wonders in 2 months though. so if they dont have, lets say, siege pvp,  they cant have it in 2 months. if they have problems with siege weapon locations, getting beta complaints about attacker/defender having adv. because of some location glitch, sure they can get rid of it.

does added 2 months give them some extra advantage like the coming 9000 series cards? maybe.reason of delay? not likely

can having close release date to your competitor be an advantage ? maybe. reason of delay? not likely

    I need more vespene gas.

Hopefully we'll get a quality game. The gender needs to evolve past the previous crop of MMOs. If this is the first of the new generation, so be it. If not, we'll just have to wait even more.

Wishing that a game fails is just silly, in my opinion.

MMORPG players are fairly loyal, and don't actually jump to a new game if they are really enjoying themselves in their current one.  I think if any developer could get their game out the door first this year they would benefit as there is a ton of pent up demand right now of players just dying to try a new game.

It would be foolish to delay a launch for marketing purposes.  I'm sticking with the bug theory.

I'm inclined to believe that the bugs forced the developers to request more time. Now it comes down to how much polish they will manage to deliver due launch, provided it doesn't move again.

One thing I can bet that will certainly happen is that all haters will come here and yell murder for the tiniest thing. It will take some time for the dust to settle down and we get a clear picture of the how the game really is at launch. For example, look at PoTBS. Who can tell me by reading the forum posts if the game had a good launch or not? Because people really love to contradict each other.

I really do think it was because of bugs. I,  too was very disappointed to hear that the game was pushed back to 5/20/2008 intead of their march date. Its just soo far away! but I understand that its better to fix the majority of bugs now before release, rather than spend another 6-8 months with patches.

I guess we just have to be patient. Before I heard about this game I was really thinking about WAR, but getting tired of the same 'cartoon' like graphics. AoC seems like a very true 'mature' rated mmo with great features.

Good points, but still, push it closer to WAR and get more people to buy your game than WAR. It could be a small reason.

-And how does this topic effect the games NDA? I am just speculating, I am not talking about gameplay!

    no

i think its that the game isn't anywhere near finished

    too many ideas

not enough discernment, and not enough action

I would also guess it is because the game is just not ready yet, which i am fine with. My question is how much more can get done in just 2 more months. If there are still big problems then 2 months probably isnt going to do it, if they are small problems the perhaps. I guess the push gives them 4 months from now till release but shouldnt the last four months be about final polish and not fixes?

I think there is a fair chance that the game will get pushed again.

I think a main reason you see all these games getting pushed back is because leveling has gotten so much faster in game. Back when EQ, UO, DAOC and games like that were the top dogs it took awhile to level. Even hardcore people took awhile to level to 50 in EQ. In games now hardcore gets to max level in a couple months max. So before you could solidify say levels 1-30 and launch the game knowing you had time to work on 30-50. Now developers dont have that kind of time because people will max out in about a quarter of the time that they could in the older games.

    My thoughts anyway.

There was a poster who created a post with a lot of detail from the beta, which he justified by saying since it was his family member who was bound by NDA and not him, he was free to share the info.

That's not the policy here on the forums and his post was completely removed.

Hehe, who thinks Mythic is immune to the problems which crop up in development? I doubt very much WAR will release on time. Sure, their game is "simpler" to balance and visually its not too taxing to do, but it IS Mythic (DAOC's contentless launch still fresh in my mind) doing the programming. And EA behind them. The fact EA is behind them is a point in WAR's favor on releasing on time, EA doesn't care about a crappy launch and destroying a game (E&B anyone?).

I still think "PVP MMORPGs" are NOT the way to go if you want a blockbuster hit. AoC apparently will have more PvE content than WAR, and that's a point in AoC's favor. MMORPG's with some PvP, that's fine. MMORPG's with only some PvE content (or none at all, Fury I'm looking at you) are dead on arrival. RPG PvP isn't as big a market as people seem to think it is. The hard core "PvP"ers are all still playing Counterstrike/HL/TF2/Halo for free, and don't want to a) grind for 4 months just to start to pvp b) pay monthly for that ability.

  • ShoeyShoey Member Posts: 16

i hardly call AoC making any sort of attempt to add any meaningful PvP to the game (9 keeps total per server, and can only be attacked once every 2-3 days, what a joke). the reason u dont see PvP games succeeding is because there simply are not any. DaOC was around back when MMOs were still in their growing stage. Creating simple AI balance and working with any sort of PvE computer controlled content has been around since the beginning of ages, but building a game ground up from RvR as the focal point takes some balls.

Color me stupid if I'm wrong, but I could have swore they already gave a plenty good and detailed reasoning behind the delay.

I don't see much need for speculation...and also, releasing BEFORE WAR would be in their best interest.  Competing that close in time just means that they lose potential Warhammer fanboy trials they may have gotten had they released sooner.  Not to mention the fact that a dual release like that will almost always go to the bigger name with the better history.  *shrug*

I hate to sound negative, but I think releasing before WotLK is more vitally important to the INITIAL success for both AoC and WAR. Over time word will spread about how good or bad either game is and that will ultimately decide how many people continue to play either. But, right from the get go it would serve them both to beat Blizzard in terms of launch date.

True that, Blizzard's more expansion is more of a threat that the competition between them

    In my opinion of course.

  • StellosStellos Member UncommonPosts: 1,491

Anyone who is playing in beta or has friends/guildmates playing in beta can tell you that it had nothing to do with WAR and everything to do with an unpolished, bug filled game.  AoC would of been a disaster if it launched in late March.  I'm glad they made the right decision on this and didn't feed us another TR or VSoH.

  • BroomyBroomy Member UncommonPosts: 487

IMO AOC got pushed back because they could "afford" the delay to clean up bugs and polish the game.  Lets not forget they got something like 30million$$ not too long ago.  Thats a big cash infusion.  So, unlike other games, (TR and VG come to mind) they don't have to release prior to being prepared in order to get funds in.  I am willing to wait for a better more stable game.
