i on average play 4-5 hours of mmorpgs a day....i thought that that was pretty average.....but iv been told its hardcore...which i really dont think it is...but alot of people seem to think so....
any way my question is how many hours a week of mmo/gameplay is considerd hardcore?
Comments
i would say anything over 20hours a week is pretty hardcore. I play casually since i have a 1yr old and a 50+ hour a week job. i get about 2 hours every other weekday, and maybe about 5 hours total weekends....most i have played since my son was born is maybe 15 hours a week
Only if you play a game 150 hours a month for 15 bucks and then complain that there isn't enough in it to keep you entertained because of the horrible devs LOL!
The scale I've seen is as follows:
0-10 hours per week - Casual
10-20 hours per week - Average
20 - 30 hours per week - Hardcore
30+ hours per week - Addict
No, I can't remember where I saw this, I'm going off of memory... in fact I don't remember what the 30+ category was called, so I just chose the name "Addict" because it seemed fitting.
But I think scale was for all gaming, not just MMORPGs
i do have a longer day that most though....im an insoniac and only get a max of 2-3 hours of sleep a day...hehe
It's pretty hardcore if that's just gaming.
We had a person submitted to the hospital here a while ago because he was playing MMO's 8 hour a day during the holiday.

"The boy played an average of eight hours a day, and sometimes 24 hours a piece, he says. In order to stay awake as long as he drank a lot of coffee and energy. He mainly played the game World of Warcraft.verslaafde sons harder to tackle."

I knew i was bad when i was rushing home from work to log onto WoW and raid...
So I'd get up at 6:30 and go to work by 8, leave at 4-4:30 so I could be home in time to start raid at 6...
then raid until 10-11.
Then go to sleep and wake up and do it all over again.
This was Monday-Thursday.
I'd go out, be social, have a good time Friday night, hit the bars, do my thing... then play WoW all day Saturday, then go out on the town again Saturday night... then play WoW all day Sunday...
then back to the Mon-Thurs routine.
So I had probably 4.5 hours Mon-Thurs, 6-8 hours Saturday and 8-10 hours Sunday.
So that's anywhere from 32-36 hours a week. I knew I was an addict.
It's pretty hardcore if that's just gaming.

He's 15 years old. His brother found him exhausted in his bed room at 3 at night after a playing session. He called the doctor and they drove him to the hospital. He's ok now, he's back home.

i see...a kid that age shouldent be drinking energy drinks and coffe every day....where i live selling energy drinks like redbull to under 16's is illegal....
You know what I find cool though, it's places , like this one I guess, where you can say you played a lot or can say how much and you don't get flamed for it.
I used to play 3 hours every night for raids for over a month, and I know it wasn't good, I was often tired in school. I think a lot of people play like that. I changed a lot since then, I hardly play games over an hour now. I play less than 10 min a day sometimes lol.
When you say those things on a game forum, 'that people play too much, or if the game is addictive' usually people will laugh or respond hostile.
I think 4 hours isn't that bad, but just make sure you have a way to build it down maybe a bit. Shrug, it's way cool you ask yourself if it's too much though, most people don't even do that.
I consider myself a hardcore gamer. I play 30 to 40 hours a week on top of a fulltime job of 40 - 50 hours a week. I dont need more then 5 hours of sleep most of the time, just how my body works.
(I know its not good for me but hey, you only live once)
Sooner or Later
That's not average. That's obsessed. What do you not have a job or school? That's around 35 hours per week.. almost a full time job!
I myself Hardcore player! I sleep 8 hours and have school aswell! And still I have sometimes over 40 hours a week, mostly 29-34 hours!
Even tho i play so much my grades are good, I go out with friends on weekends,I go to fitness( so i don't become fatf*ck )! Actualy I think its up to people how they manage stuff! So If u sort and schedule things well it can be just about perfect!
I do play too much I think :P ! But i belive 30 hours isn't so hardcore, because there are some people spending more than 50 hours a week and even more!
Fell the pain
While it's not like any other person has posted it I'll still say it to confirm the facts. You're a true hardcore/addict. Over 3hrs per day is pretty hardcore in my opinion.
Yeah when I was in college I played a lot more.
But I too also went out nearly every night w/ friends lol.
8-12 hours of work a week + 12-15 hours of college leaves a LOT of free time to MMO and also to go out to bars lol
it was the best of times.... my advice? never leave college. ever.
Would I play MMOs all day every day and go out w/ friends every night if I could?
OOOOOHHH YEEEAAAHHHH
Yes, you are hardcore.
I have a wife, kids + job. On a lucky weekday, I may get 2 or 2.5 hours at night (9pm-11pm).
I can may be do 5-10 hours over the weekend depending on whether there is family plans. So I may at most be getting 20 hours a week. That is assuming I do NOT engage in any OTHER entertainment activity (like single player games, watching movie/anime) which I do.
its kinda funny that people consider hardcore gaming bad.
I used to do homework hardcore.. im talking 4 hours+ a day.
I used to play soccer hardcore.. but that was cool. I could say I play soccer more than 4 hours a day, and people go "wow dedicated"
I say I play wow more than 4 hours and they go "omg your addicted..."
Its kinda funny the distorted perception people have, even those you play the game. The people who play wow 8 hours a day then say "wow ruined my life" or junk like that. Or the ever famous, im addicted but I cant stop.
People spend 7 hours in a bloody shopping mall as teenagers. People can go out and drink/club from 10 to 4am.. thats a 6 hour grind session. Problem is, people think thats cool, yet 6 hours of a video game with friends is baaaaaaad.
Its just what people choose to do with their time. If you fill your time with video games, great, you enjoy them. If your shrugging off your family and everything cause your playing games... Thats not the game, your just a moron and need to stop using the game as an excuse for your problems.
I've played Wow for 8 hour stints.. heck ive done 12 hours with friends, get home at noon from class and played till midnightish, ofcourse we stop for dinner and food. last time we went out for chinese :P
spending 8 hours playing a game is no worse than 3 hours of reading, followed by an hour of tv, followed by a hour of pissing the house and then 3 hours of video games...
its just your HORRIBLY distorted perception, and abuse of the word addiction.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Not sure if this counts because I balance my gameplay between MMO's that I can stand for a bit and other games like C&C3, Counter Strike Source, any new games I wanna try. However I work full time Monday-Friday 8-16:30, then walk my dog and eat and usually sit infront of the computer at about 17:30, play till I have to walk my dog for the last time that night so between 22:00 and 23:00, during the week, then go see my Girlfriend and go to bed at about 1-2 and wake up again at 6:45 to go swimming before work. Then on the weekends if my GF is busy I will play all day Saturday and Sunday, but lets go with an average of 8 hrs those days. So each week 5hrs per day mon-friday so 25hrs there and another 16 average from saturday and sunday, so 41 hrs on average per week? So I guess I qualify as Addict but not just to MMO's just to Videogames...LOL
Back when I played WOW Hardcore or at least what I thougth was hardcore, I didn't have a GF at the time, so i was playing from like 17:00 every night till 2 am, and all day Saturday and sunday, not to mention we would raid on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday so those nights I would play till we were done sometimes that was 4-5 am. Then up at noon to play some more...Now those were my hard core days...LOL.
Well, there are a lot of downsides to it.
You can't compare it to going to the mall or playing sports.
You sit, and don't get any excercise when you play an MMO, you don't talk to anyone, you don't notice what happens with your kids or around you.
It seems very addictive too, meaning it can get 'worse' if you get hooked. I don't see people getting addicted to playing sports or going to a mall, or studying.
MMO's do have benefits I read, they can teach you social skills (I know this sounds contradictional), and they help in writing and spelling.
Its no more addictive than any other sport. Games are just a "sport" that appeals to a MUCH larger audience and can keep their attention much longer.
As well as being safe, cheap, and fun...after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
That's not average. That's obsessed. What do you not have a job or school? That's around 35 hours per week.. almost a full time job!
You could go to school, get 8 hours of sleep, and still manage to play 60+ hours a week if that's all you do in your free time.
Edit: I forgot to include weekends. You could actually break 100 hours if you had no life outside of school and still got a good 8 hours of sleep.
i usally play 10-12 hours a day.
and i dont think 4-5 hours a day is hardcore
If you play 4/5 hours a day... you're simply an addict: a person who is running after the hardcore but can never catch them.
Anyway with MMOs either you play alot, or you might as well not play, theya re designed for people with lots of free time.
My addiction History:
>> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore
>> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual
>> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.
