If you play a game for more hours then most people work in a week I would consider that pretty hardcore.

I'm lucky if I get more than 10 hours in a week.

Although I would love it to be more :P

    I'm a reformed addict.

    Previous weekday (Monday-Friday) was:

Up at 5am to get ready for work, go to work, home by ~5pm.

Eat, then raid from around 6pm 'til 11pm.

Then I used to play 8-10 hours per day at weekends too.

All-in-all, I used to play around 40 hours a week, this was on WoW when I was in an progress-whore end-game raiding guild that was farming Black Temple and pretty much required similar dedication from all of it's 60+ members.

Clichéd as it sounds, I few months ago I had an epiphany and decided to get a ilfe.

Now I restrict my gaming to weekends and rarely top 15 hours a week max, but I had to quit WoW for two reasons; it's not as casual friendly as it likes to make out, and I don't trust myself not to slip into old behavioural patterns.

Now I'm looking around for a different game that suits my playtime/playstyle (not having a great deal of success at the moment, but that's:)

As a side comment to the people saying that gaming is "just another sport" and decrying the use of the term "addictive", stop deluding yourselves. Gaming IS addictive, IS NOT a Sport, and it IS harmful in excess, (as most things are).

Only if you play a game 150 hours a month for 15 bucks and then complain that there isn't enough in it to keep you entertained because of the horrible devs LOL!

That is so true and funny that i thought it was worth quoting LOL!

I say I play wow more than 4 hours and they go "omg your addicted..."
Its kinda funny the distorted perception people have, even those you play the game. The people who play wow 8 hours a day then say "wow ruined my life" or junk like that. Or the ever famous, im addicted but I cant stop.
People spend 7 hours in a bloody shopping mall as teenagers. People can go out and drink/club from 10 to 4am.. thats a 6 hour grind session. Problem is, people think thats cool, yet 6 hours of a video game with friends is baaaaaaad.
Its just what people choose to do with their time. If you fill your time with video games, great, you enjoy them. If your shrugging off your family and everything cause your playing games... Thats not the game, your just a moron and need to stop using the game as an excuse for your problems.
I've played Wow for 8 hour stints.. heck ive done 12 hours with friends, get home at noon from class and played till midnightish, ofcourse we stop for dinner and food. last time we went out for chinese :P
spending 8 hours playing a game is no worse than 3 hours of reading, followed by an hour of tv, followed by a hour of pissing the house and then 3 hours of video games...
its just your HORRIBLY distorted perception, and abuse of the word addiction.

Worth quoting again... thats so true I mean from training for basketball then playing it took hours I go to get some R and R for a few hour playing video games with my mate4s and my mum gives me shit.. ain fair I tell yah but it is truly difficult to alter someones perception especially as stuburn as a mother's LOL!

It's pretty hardcore if that's just gaming.

We had a person submitted to the hospital here a while ago because he was playing MMO's 8 hour a day during the holiday.

    tinyurl.com/ytuz4y

"The boy played an average of eight hours a day, and sometimes 24 hours a piece, he says. In order to stay awake as long as he drank a lot of coffee and energy. He mainly played the game World of Warcraft.verslaafde sons harder to tackle."

how old was this kid.... thats pretty bad...

He's 15 years old. His brother found him exhausted in his bed room at 3 at night after a playing session. He called the doctor and they drove him to the hospital. He's ok now, he's back home.

Ok is it just me or does

    a) playing 8 hours a day during the holidays seem not actually very excessive for a kid who has no school/work to worry about?

    and

    b) being exhausted in your bedroom at 3am not really warrant being driven to the hospital?

That's not average. That's obsessed. What do you not have a job or school? That's around 35 hours per week.. almost a full time job!

Erm not really obsessed but he does play quite a lot :)

    Think on it this way:

    Average college student schedule:

4-5 hrs of classes per day

    2-3 hrs of homework/study a day

8-12 hours of 'piss off' time per day

6-8 hours of sleep per day.

He's a self admitted insomniac so he gets about 3-4hrs of sleep at night... so he has an 8-16 hour window of "do whatever the hell I want to" time.  Granted he should probably get more sleep but good god... if he's only playing a game for 1/3 or less of his free time I'd hardly call him obsessed... I'd call him bored :)

Mmm... depends on what type of 'exhaustion' we're talking about.  A doctor did instruct them to take him to a hospital after all.  And drinking excessive energy drinks at that age is actually really bad for a kid that gets little-to-no real exercize.  My daughter (12) drinks energy drinks because she dances anywhere from 3-6 hours a day about 5 days a week (more when there's a competition/performance coming up) but even with her we watch how many she drinks.  Her energy drinks are mostly vitamin water type drinks though, not things like 'red bull'.  And we make sure she gets at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

I really do not see time spend as something to call hardcore.

Hardcore to me means how much someone is involved with a game, this can be 1 hour of play or 24 hours of play, hardcore to me is someone who enjoy's many aspects/feature's of a game and truly understands the game from top/bottom, someone who is very helpfull ingame, in some cases those who make guide's i could consider to be very hardcore cause of them sharing their knowledge of the game. Hardcore is finding your own challenge in games.

What hardcore does not mean IN MY OPINION is lvl asap as that is in no way hardcore but just someone who is not capeble of actualy playing this genre, but rather tries to play a game in this genre as if it is a single player game.

I have a passion for MMO/rpg's but overall i am a HARDCORE GAMER, thou i don't have enough time to spend on my hobby, but for me time spend is not what makes one hardcore.......in my opinion.

heh doesn't surprise me, games can surprisingly knacker you. Especially if it's pvp or marathon long mmo sessions.

5 hours a day? I used to be able to do that- not enough time nor desire for mmos now :( . But by normal standards that would be considered hardcore and I think by mmo standards its probably kinda tame heh.

I would not bind the the definition of hardcore to a certain amount of  time where you sit in front of your computer to play game X. To me it starts to get hardcore (and hardcore to me is a negative term in this case) when a game distracts you so much and eats up so much hours of your lifetime that you stop interacting with the real world out there. When you start to loose contact with your friends and relatives, then it starts to become hardcore.

IVe had sessions where ive played 48hours straight then went on to daily basis of ~12hours each day if not more.

That would make me addictive to a game in a medical view. But it was merely because i didn't have nothing better to do.

Now i play average of 8hours each day simply because i have a Gf that plays games aswell, weekends are normally for parties and hanging out with friends. And im very impulsive so that "8 hours each day" doesn't really hold.

At the moment i don't have a job nor going to school, so i have alot of free time doing nothing. But hey, better that i sit infront of my computer everyday than being outside doing whatever shitty things you can do :p

I guess I used to be hardcore; as far as hours go, anyways.  While back I used to play a shit ton, but I wasn't ever hardcore raiding or what not.  I usually just sat and grinded casually while talking with my guild (great group of people, they were), or grouping with them.  It was mostly BSing with my buddies, though.  That's always been the best MMO experiences for me.  Not these epic raids, not even the epic PvP (though that's a close second), it was always the funny shit that used to get discussed in guild or group chat.

Anyways, I find anywhere from an hour to three hours a day during the week to play MMOs, maybe a little more on weekends.  I don't think that's too hardcore, since last semester I 4.0'd 16 hours of college and this semester I'm finding time to join a fraternity..

Someone else here already said it best.  It's not necessarily the amount of hours, but the amount of life put into the game.  When it starts alienating you from real life friends and activities, that's when it's becoming too much.

30+ hours per week -  Addict
No, I can't remember where I saw this, I'm going off of memory... in fact I don't remember what the 30+ category was called, so I just chose the name "Addict" because it seemed fitting.
But I think scale was for all gaming, not just MMORPGs

I agree with that calculation. Given any person with a RL and job anything above 3 hours a day, 7 days a week is a GREAT commitment to a game.

I play games alot.. Not really one in particular but my hobby is gaming, so I usually do it when i wanna do it.. I'm not going to sit here and try to explain to you people if I have a social life blah blah blah or not (because your opinion really matters.) But I'd say I average about 30-40 hours a week on gaming.. Not really mmo's in particular but gaming as a whole.. And thats with being in the military, having a wife and being a part time amatuer MMA fighter (In the gym about 10 hours a week)... I dont see that as being hardcore, its just how passionate you are about games..

Lol, I find it funny how some people try to "cushion" their gaming habits and "defend" their social status by throwing in the fact that they "frequent" bars and clubs in their spare time... haha..

I do about...10-14 hours, daily, with a rare peppering of 24-hours straight mixed in. I work at home, and nothing else to do, once it's done. That, and I sleep, very little. Do I think it's healthy? Hell no. Will I stop. Also, hell no. I never stopped when I was going to school, spending all night playing a game, in the middle of the week, and finally falling asleep on my keyboard, in class. And to think that I passed school, at all...it's fun, it does not damage my life, so what's the harm, I feel. But it's when people over-do it that it becomes an issue...like when you pass out because it's become so bad, and need to be taken to the hospital. It's like in parts of the world where MMO players die from playing, too often...they really need to know their limits, there.

    Here is an interesting exercise:

In the question "How many hours a week playing mmorpgs is hardcore?" substitute 'watching pornography' with 'mmorpgs' and then see if that number alarms you.

Hehe, yes I know the comparison is ludicrous but substitute normal tv watching, for example, to a similar effect. While it isn't an interactive experience watching the tube is about as strenuous and most people would cringe if you told then you watch 40 hrs of network tv a week. Hmmm, here in America maybe they wouldn't. Ok, disregard that.

Any entertainment in the extreme can be detrimental not simply because of the denial of other aspects of your life but because you are staring at a screen for way too long. Your eyes are focused on a single point and your body is... well you know the effects on the body. :)

If possible game playing should be broken up into many smaller parts instead of a marathon session but most mmorpgs lend themselves to the grind and extended play sessions with a group. It is hard to get everyone to 'break for an hour' or even take five....unless they smoke :)

I try to play while on a treadmill (yes, a literal treadmill not a 'carrot on a stick' mmo version) when I can. Sadly, many of these games lend themselves to mindless tasks. I even had a habit of doing a few sets after every quest finish in a couple of games but the timing became somewhat sporadic.

I'm looking for the fully 3d cyber suit action before I get to the old folks home.
