eh...well....iv played with quite a few girls online...but i didnt thing number were that high..non of the girls i personally know are into gaming ,,,,not sure why i never find these girls...it would be fun...:) ...
Completely untrue, and actually a pretty small minded point of view. "Dudes" and "chicks" often like the same stuff. People like youself who most likely do not have, and probably haven't ever had, a girlfriend think this way because they do not understand the reality that girls like the same crap as guys. My girlfriend and I play DDO together, and she is actually more into it than I am. I know many MANY girls who are the same way, and they are normal attractive ladies. In fact I know a girl who is a model who LOVES EQ and has loved it since release. So, cut the crap, and just accept that because YOU don't know any girls who play personally doesn't mean they don't exist.
i have a gf...and she thinks games suck...everythime she sees me playing a gam she complains ...get anoying sometime.

I have a girlfriend too, and I think I know how you feel. If you think about it, maybe the reason why she hates video games is because you are neglecting her due of your gaming habit. Women are like that, they don't like to be priority number two.
I found a good gimmick around this(Bastard alert!). What I did is I had one of my friends call me up repeatedly when we were spending time together with my girl. At first I simply hung up without answering, acting like I'm getting angry at the caller. Then I told my girlfriend that I needed to pick up, it could be work. Once I answered I told my friend off and angrily made him promise not to call me about a stupid video game raid when he knows I'm out with my girlfriend! Hook, line and sinker! It worked perfectly. At first I was a bit anxious, I'm a very bad actor and liar, but I guess one truth does apply to people, most people rather see what they want to see than what is actually before them.
Now don't get me wrong here. I'm extremely fortunate to be involved with the wonderful person that is my girlfriend, so yes I've reprioritized my life, and while it does not revolve around her I definitely put in an effort to be there for her and make time just for us. I don't think you need to spend time wondering about whether gaming will always be a dude thing, I think you need some dating advise.

lol migt try that out but she knows my lieing face (apparently) i need training
lol migt try that out but she knows my lieing face (apparently) i need training
I'm probably going to hell for this...but.....
The trick to a "poker" face (or to lying in general) is to first believe it yourself. Sounds stupid, but its not. See, the reason people have telltale signs when lying is because they actively think about the fact they are lying. They know its a lie, and think about it. Once you overcome the mental hurdle of believing your own lie, you no longer have to deal with the facets of it showing in your body. You are, in effect, no longer lying...mentally.
Now, before you go messing around trying to DO this...be sure to remember that you also have to be able to come back around later and still be mentally able to realize it WAS a lie. Else you get stuck in that weird compulsive lying trap. :P
If that doesn't work for you...there is one other way. When it comes time to lie, force yourself to think about something COMPLETELY off topic for whats going on. If you are lying about cars, think about bunny rabbits. Apply the lie truthfully to something in your brain,
Now that I'm done being evil, I'll move on. Lying is bad. Honesty is best, in fact...if games are a big part of your life and your partner hates them, it might be best to rethink your relationship. A big issue we people tend to have is getting involved in relationships that antagonize what we are. Example: If you are a stripper...and love doing it....you don't date a priest. His life is dedacated to something which is opposed to what yours is. Is a fire-water mix and it won't work. Find people that at least share some common ground with you on the things which are central to your lifestyle.
That happens to be the reason that I'm married to the lady I am. She games WITH me. We like similar food, and while we have very different opinions on things...we both enjoy the casual side to discussing them and learning more about each side. It works. Don't go trying to make something that fails...work.
I think its much higher than 2-3%, when I used to play Lineage 2, for some reason I would come across quite a few females, more than just a small amount.
I usually agree with you on about everything you post mate but this time... hehe.. you are so wrong.
I work in the gaming industry and i've been around quite alot... THere's a HUGE load of girls making games, playing games and designing games. Don't get me wrong, it's not 50/50 but it's not 2 %or 3% ... to top it off, most of them I've met were pretty good looking and all. I usually do not meet the big fat nerd (girl or guy) in the dev stage of a game. I myself look decent
Now here's the thing... Even games like Quake 3, RTCW and other less teen oriented shooter like CS have some of nicest/hotest/skilled girl gamers. Just join the community and see what lies behind...
Half my wow guild was composed of girls.... (yeah... the chat was omg... .. FAST.. Guys were on ventrilo and the girls on the chat lol)

Although I dont like WoW for any of its concepts other than being able to bring mmo's to the mainstream. I would not hesitate to reactivate my subscription that has been dead since 1 month after launch if i were to meet a hot chick that plays.
I've met a few girls that play but having a shitload of chipped teeth or a head thats alot bigger than your body are kinda turn off's lawl

You're right about that, no relationship is perfect. It would help if you could find ways to bring her into the things you enjoy though. Usually, thats the big thing. Women who hate games often hate them because they take away from time they could have with their mate. If they play with you, its time you spend together. Or, in my case, time I spend trying to catch up to her because mine outlevels me every time. *sigh*
Well I'm a girl AND I game. Not saying I'm a hardcore gamer, but enough :P I have a boyfriend that games too, so that usually works quite nicely. I look forward to a game like Aion for instance.
I have to agree that I don't see a LOT of girls gaming around me. Actually a lot of the girls around me stopped playing cuz of the game-community. Girls do indeed seem to experience games in way more social way than guys and let's admit it, not every game has a wonderfull and friendly community *grins* Of course it matters how you deal with it, but it can certainly cause a part the girl-gamer community to stop playing.
Don't think that the girl-community is waiting for girl-games though. Maybe it's waiting to be taken seriously in the overall community?
How many percent of guys do you think is pretending to be a girl you think btw? Just a side note to the general conversation.

I normally don't. As I said earlier...if I do play a female character its only because the male ones are just ugly...and its takes A LOT of ugly to make me not play one. But, there was one time that I was on a female toon and someone walked up to me and started in with the "flirting" and offered me stuff. I suppose I could have told them I was a male...but my mother raised me to never turn down a gift. Its rude to the giver, after all! Besides, if I had broken down and told him (mind you, I never actually ran around suggesting I was a real woman...I would think that the way to speak in chats would be more male anyway) I would have been forced to also berate him for being so dumb.
All told, I didn't have the heart. I thanked him, and then got out of dodge because its an odd situation. I can see why women hate that sort of thing...and it probably plays a lot into why many don't play them.
I really do not understand this post from what I have read. I really do not believe anyone really cares how many girls game. If they game cool, if not whatever. So the OP suggestion of games or MMO's being a "dude" thing is irrelevant.
The second thing I noticed was the discussion of females needing more content or things in a game geared towards them.
So let's discuss this.
There are a few points that need to be made in regards to video games and their originations and how the styles are derived. I will hit this point first because it addresses the pink frilly foo foo elf half naked thing that females seem to get upset about most of the time.
The video game BOOM came from asia. More specifically the video game BOOM came from japan. The Japanese have a very different culture from the rest of the world, very different ideals specifically concerning sex. If you look at most asian games, not MMO's but asian games as a whole, you will notice almost ALL female characters portrayed half naked, with armors that expose the characters in a sexual manner.
What you have to keep in mind tho is while sex maybe taboo to americans, (maybe not so much europeans) this type of art is completely fine with the japanese. This is evident in almost all facets of japanese game, anime, and manga style art forms.
We will take World of Warcraft for example at the moment since it is the #1 game in the world at the present time. If you look closely at WoW's art you can tell that the artist for blizzard were very influenced by japanese art forms. This is why WoW's art is cartoon semi-cell-shade with very sexual overtones to the female classes of the game. A few classes in wow no matter how you try to doll them up will always remain well... not attractive (taurens, orcs, trolls) but even still the elves, blood elves, human females have huge sexual overtones in thier art and armors. You could almost argue that the art in WoW's female characters were made by guys for guys to look at, but I do not think this is the case entirely.
Every MMO's I have ever played has had races with both male and female characters. Would be pretty silly to play an MMO's with 100% of the races to be male only. I personally wouldn't play a game like this as I would feel like I was in a Police Academy Movie at the Blue Oyster Club.... but yeah.
Anyway, MMO's have always been geared towards both MALE and FEMALES since the very beginning.
UO, EQ1, DAoC, WoW, GW, FFXI, on down the list. All of these games catered to both sexes equally tho many of them focused more on the sexual outlook of the female characters from a guy perspective as opposed to what a woman would really want to play or look like.
Long story short there have always been female gamers, will always be female gamers, and that is cool with me. I would rather game with a woman than have her bringing me my beer and cooking my dinner barefoot in the kitchen anyway.
I really do not understand this post from what I have read. I really do not believe anyone really cares how many girls game. If they game cool, if not whatever. So the OP suggestion of games or MMO's being a "dude" thing is irrelevant.
What do you mean no one cares? how else am i gonna get webcamz, cyb0rz and naked photos of real girlz?!
All jokes aside I agree, i think its funny when im playing any game (especially CS) and a girl talks then its like OMGWTFBBQ MARRY ME
I have no idea if this was said or not, really dont want to read the wall of text about the same thing over and over but I believe the reason is why there is a gender gap is because females have a larger pressure early in life to not play games than males do. You might look at www.nickyee.com on some of the data that has been gathered about this sort of thing.
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

You just kinda sparked a memory for me from when i was in the 3rd grade, our teacher read us a book about this family about dad having a job mom working hte kitchen and bedroom (added bedroom from an earlier comment wasnt really in the book) and the kids doin homework and kids things. Then it ended up the dad doing the cleaning/cooking and work and the mom working on the car or some shit. I think it was supposed to mean women can do whatever men could. Im not even sure wtf this is being posted for but thought I'd share.
im not sexist and i will probably be flamed....but gaming will always be a dude thing.....i know that female gamers are rising...but still...they are a tiny minoraty (like 2/3%) and no company is going to invest a few million £/$ to make a game specially for women. sorry....but it wont happen..

50% of the population (on average) is female, and as you pointed out, the majority of that 50% is untapped in terms of interactive entertainment. I would be surprised if companies DIDN'T try to make a game specially for women
At the Sony GDC party, a group called GIRL (gamers in real life) spoke about females in the industry; they've brought together a fairly even ratio of females and males to work on the Agency (their upcoming MMO) in hopes that the female staffers can help make the game more appealing to women. While I'm cautious about their approach - after all, the "gamer girls" they have on staff are already gamers, and they are trying to tap into the NON-gamer females - it's a great move in the right direction.
Don't count women out of the game (yuk yuk) just yet; in my opinion, its just a matter of time until interactive entertainment doesn't care a lick about gender. As they say, history repeats itself - once upon a time there weren't even women in PLAYS, and males played both genders. Get ready, because the female gamer population is only growing
Laura "Taera" Genender Community Manager MMORPG.com
OP, you need to stop. Just stop believing that you know what women want or do not want. Even women do not know what the hell they want.
Yes, women play games. Do women want the same things out of games that men want? I don't know!
One thing that is for certain, I am constantly amazed at the things that large numbers of females confess to being into. I've known women that are more religious about fighting games than I could ever be. I'm assuming that this is because fighting games were some of the first games to feature strong female characters, but then again a lot of "fighter chix" like to play male characters as well. Women do seem to be more drawn to mascot style games like Mario and Sonic where the violence is so abstract that you really don't think of it as violence, but then again I know a lot of women that were totally into BloodRayne.
Outside of gaming, the most shocking realization about women that I've had to come to grips with is how every "anime chick" I've ever met gives a huge thumbs up to the animated hentai Cool Devices while being up front about their fondness for yoai. The former being shockingly violent and degrading to women and the latter being too horrible to contemplate.
I hate Football, my wife loves it. Although I'm not really sure if she's interested in the game or just watching guys in tight pants tackle each other....
At any rate, you need to give up any and all preconceptions you have about women. No matter what those preconceptions may be, I'd bet money that they're dead wrong.
Women actually make up a large % of gamers. The average age is just much older, and thus is less obnoxious and apparent that all our good ol 12yearold buddies.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...

Sucks living int he tri valley >=(

@Ponico: u see.. .....i dont girls like that were i come from ...suks :P
@Gishgeron: well i just got myself a copy of l2...might get here one and make her play
@Evila: so u c were i got my conclosion from i need to look for this gg (girl gamers)
@momatica: thats just sexist.....
Hey Ponico,
You work at Ubisoft?
Do you have anything to do with Heroes of Might and Magic? I'm a big fan.
That was a joke.... or was it?

I like women gamers, they give us nerdy guys hope of finding love.
