A lot of folks throw the term, 'next gen' around when referring to new mmo's to be released, but this clearly fits the bill. I would sooooo play this game.
I really hope this game gets released. It's contemporary real world look and feel make it relevant in a way that fantasy based mmo's could never hope to achieve. When we talk about living virtual lives in virtual worlds, I could imagine that players might invest a lot of themselves into such a game, especially if it supported other rp aspects like having your own apartment, dancing clubs, etc.
I am very interested in "Modern Massively Multiplayer Online Games" such as this, or The Matrix Online (MMORPG). APB has been in developement since 2005, I believe. I am pretty sure MMORPG.com hasn't had anything on this game as far as a listing or a dedicated forum because it is not classified as a MMORPG. However, it is basically an online version of Cops and Robbers Now that is cool.
What I don't like about this game is that it is somewhat unrealistic and the only thing you are really working toward in playing the game in terms of goal achievements is "cool clothes." You start out as just a regular joe with a plain t-shirt and jeans, but as you go along and become an experienced player (however long that takes, I do not know) you can further customize your character with all sorts of clothing accessories, not to mention new weapons and cars. Therefore, this game's goals are somewhat materialistic. I guess you can win by calling yourself the baddest motha on the block with all the best gear - outfit, guns, sweet ride.
Personally, I would like to play on the Enforcement or The Squads part of the game. In real life, police officers all have standard uniforms and if you've seen the concept art for the APB characters it surely wouldn't fly with the higher-ups to be dressed like that. But whatever, this is a game. I guess I'll be one of the few players who chooses not to be too flashy or to pimp my ride. If I did play on The Gangs or Criminals side I would want to emulate a real life gang.
The level of character customization seen in the video is amazing. You can create real-life counterparts in game! Just look at that Mario guy, he's a real dude! I think it will be funny to see who creates what real life characters. I bet someone will make a 2Pac or 50 Cent or something on the Gangs side. I am definitely making Chuck Norris on the Enforcement side.
One thing that disappointed me was that the article mentioned a certain mission. There were four low-level thugs who went on a criminal mission to steal a TV and an APB was put out. A single high-level Enforcement player responded and killed them all with a rocket launcher. Come on, a rocket launcher? For crying out loud! That is kind of ridiculous. 4 guys breaking into a TV store get killed by a cop with a rocket launcher...whatever lol
