Originally posted by Aragon100 So you see, beta isnt that far away at all. My guess is beta before fall 2008 and if all goes well a release end 2008 or early 2009.
Beta tests are generally run for a couple of years before release. WAR isn't even going to be released before the near end of 2008, and that game has been in heavy development and beta testing for quite some time now.
Darkfall fans have been touting this game for years, and all the while the rest of the sane (if it can be so called) MMO community have been playing and enjoying other games without having to compare them to some fictitious nonsense that will finally have all the features that people have been clamoring for in an MMORPG.
So go ahead, compare Darkfall graphics to AoC graphics and argue about poly count and make unsupported claims about how AoC's battles will be laggy. At least at the end of the day, AoC fans will have a game to play.
Some of us actually wants quality gaming time and it's not like our lives stand still in the wait of DF. Life is too short to play crappy games. From what I hear DX10 isn't even available in AoC beta , a month and a half before launch. Yeah, it will lag in any PvP zone where more than 40 gamers can gather.

We all want quality gaming time, but that's not what a beta test is about, hence the word "test".
Since you don't know anything about the AoC beta outside of rumors, particularly anything about its PVP lag or lackthereof, you can't really comment, now can you? Would it blow your mind to learn that some games have multiple external and internal beta tests happening at the same time with multiple clients? That's what a real beta test looks like.
While I would love Darkfall to release to the masses and prove us all wrong. It won't happen. By looking at the screenshots, by watching the few videos that DF has released, I can't even imagine why anyone would be led to believe that DF's graphics are better. The fact that AoC's dreamworld engine is far more advanced cannot be debated. It is a fact. News flash to the ignorant. A 8800 Ultra can run AoC on max settings.
If you like the art style of DF over AoC, good for you. Just don't attempt to debate graphic technology. You have no argument, plan and simple.
Not only that, to me at least, it's hard to stick up for a game that has been in alpha for the past 8 years and the DF team doesn't seem to be at all interested in showing the public anything. So where do the DF people get off accusing AoC of being buggy because they haven't gone to open beta? What does that say for your game and devs if they won't show anything at all after 8 years of production.

Darkfall fans have no room to cry doom on AoC
I can comment about the use about technology. Internet will create lagg in graphical heavy clients. No number of testing will solve that problem.

Actually that has very little to do with the fact that its the internet.. its your local client thats lagging graphically, and would do so with the same amount of characters on the screen if it was an offline game... The only affect being in an mmo has over being offline is that player characters might randomly wander in and out of your field of view more so than npcs, causing your local client to have to load/unload/manage their models/textures on the fly, which causes your usual mmo city hitching that you see in most populated large areas/cities in mmos
As for DarkFall vs AoC - darkfall is still vapourware.. aoc is in preorder mode. Once that changes then we can discuss one vs the other.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
What did you think? Graphics are not important. Its gameplay. Gameplay makes a game or destories a game. Good Graphics are just a bonus.
AoC is being made by a huge development team vs Darkfall which is being made by a small team. A big team will take less time then a small team to make the same size game. Now lets put in that Darkfall is alot bigger then AoC in terms of game world size.
AoC has a full time Advertising team were as Darkfall does not have any.
Now I agree the AoC graphic engine is better overall then Darkfall's but like I said its more about gameplay and the AoC video's on combat was bad. (atleast to me). It is going to be too much information, too many choices with not enough time to make the choice. It will become people learning which skills/combo's work best and that will be that.
I have not seen how ranged/Casting will work but It seems like it will be easlier to play a caster or a ranged class then a melee class which (again in opinion) will limit the number of players playing as a melee class.
Darkfall is no more vaporware then AoC or WAR. It is just going to take longer to come out because it has alot smaller team with the same or more work.

I've never played an MMO that was lag free 100% of the time. Of course there will be lag, but testing does help to diminish it.
Not sure what you are trying to do here other than be a pill.

Sure a 8800 could run the graphics, too bad it will play like a turn based game. Indeed the devs of DF commented on this in Journal #18: "On character morphology and body types: It's pretty easy to implement a fully customizable character editor where you can change every conceivable aspect of your character's facial and body features. It's fun doing that. Thing is, this is a fully optimized game for massive battles and we'll go with faster loading and framerate every time. This is not to say that your characters will all look the same, far from it. We've talked about the endless variations available to make your character look unique but without sacrificing functionality." Where AoC is graphical heavy and instanced, DF will be light and non instanced. gameplay >> graphics anyday If you like the art style of DF over AoC, good for you. Just don't attempt to debate graphic technology. You have no argument, plan and simple. I bet you, you cannot do it. There have been so many leaks in beta and my friends in beta confirms it. AoC is unfinished and untested. Stay away from preorder sounds like good advice. It's so funny when AoC talk about long dev time when they stopped at 5 years, still unfinished after what 5 delays ? What does that say for your game and devs if they won't show anything at all after 8 years of production. You haven't seen the screenshots and read the dev reports, have you ? Yeah, that's what I thought. Yeah, that's what I thought.

Aye, testing allows them to find where some bottlenecks are, and what will be needed to fix the issues. Sure, it won't find everything, but it does help.
Example:
Character graphics create graphical lag. The devs (through testing) notice this and will try to optimize textures/skeletal frames to help reduce the number of textures/triangles/etc that need to be drawn and at what distances they are drawn at. Same will work for static arcitecture and the like. Once they realize where these bottlenecks are, they optimize and test again to see if the results are what they are looking for.
If the optimizations work, less data is sent to clients, bandwidth is freed up, clients run a bit smoother and the end player has a better playing experience.
So yes, testing does help.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
I could destroy all of your points about AoC, but that would be breaking a certain NDA.
Darkfall is no more Vaporware than Aoc or WAR? Okay, then if you would be so kind, point out to me Darkfall's estimated release date, it's listing on a major game site as available for pre-order, or even a publisher. Until you can do ONE of those three very simple things, the game isn't going anywhere.
Not only is the team "small", but it lacks a publisher from what I understand. I've seen games with more solid backing than Darkfall die from publisher difficulties alone, forgetting that as you pointed out, there's no advertising team to speak of.
If money is a problem for the team, then I fail to see how they will create a server capable of supporting hundreds, much less thousands of people or even one that will have the lag free environment that so many Darkfall fans are just so certain will come to pass.
I think I would have less difficulty believing in Scientology than this game's release.

If the game is basically done, then there's no point in even doing a beta test at all. Might as well just release it over the summer and smoke WAR before it even has a chance. I remember hearing about a game when I was in high school called "Dawn". They had forums, a beta sign-up, screen shots, videos, everything. The whole thing turned out to be a hoax in the end. Ever since then, I've never believed in a game's chances of being released until I see a release date and the ability to pre-order a game from either EBgames or Amazon.com If Darkfall turns out to be real, then it will smoke everything out there, assuming it delivers on all its promises.
Its always good to stresstest the game and let the beta players mail in unfound bugs, things like that you know.
Since its just about done there will be a very short beta before release. Were getting very close to that time, right now. Beta before fall 2008 is a qualified guess. And release end 2008 or early 2009 if all goes well.
And dont call Darkfall fans for insane ones please, it kinda take away just about anything you were trying to achieve here on the Darkfall board. And what is it youre trying to achieve by the way? Couldnt face that someone is telling the truth about your favourite game AoC?
And bringing up Dawn just make you another Darkfall troll since you have no facts whatsoever to make such a comparison. Just face it, youre following the wrong game, AoC is a overhyped game and Darkfall is the next generation of MMORPG games if they deliver.

Um if I were to troll against AoC, I would do that on the AoC forum not in the DF forum, You are the one trolling Sir.
Granted, not all lag are latency but it is by far the most important one in PvP. You must design your game with this in mind. Aoc's zoning model and heavy use of graphics say otherwise.

you cant compare them. you especially cant compare them due to one being DX9 and the other DX10. you cant compare them because one is based in a world created over 70 years ago and the other about 30 mins in a meeting. you cant compare them because they have different art styles. they have different people doing the artwork and are on different engines.
in short: you cant compare them
MMO wish list:

That's not how beta tests work. And I've heard all of this before about Darkfall being close. Just because you post the claim won't make it true. Give me a publisher, a pre-order website, or an official release date. If it's so close to being done, it should have at least ONE of those three.
Darkfall fans aren't insane so much as they just have an incredible amount of faith. Something I don't respect at all. What am I trying to achieve? Nothing really. Just wasting time while I'm at work.
Right, some Darkfall fan is telling me the "truth" about AoC. That's hilarious to me for reasons that I can't say or I would be breaking a certain NDA. So, so funny...
Yeah, I'll lose sleep wondering if you're right about Darkfall being the next gen MMORPG. Here's a little hill to get over for that to happen: Darkfall actually has to get into stores. Guess someone forgot to tell the Darkfall devs (assuming they exist) about that one.
Honestly this is just hilarious to me. People who know nothing about AoC trying to tell me of all people how terrible it's going to be and how great their imaginary perfect game will be once it gets released this year.
MMORPG.com should just delete Darkfall's forums and database here. It's a serious affront to anyone with half a brain.
Well, it's time for me to go home and get back to my regular life. Respond to this post if you like, but I won't be replying back. I only come to these forums when I feel like needlessly arguing with people over stupid topics like video games.

You are right. One is a levebased, linear themeparkgame (omg - you were an escaped galley slave as well ? What is the odds of that??!!!) heavily zoned and instanced just like WoW and the other will be skillbased, sandbox with with no instances kinda like EVE. The game couldn't be more different.

Kinda like the AoC releasedates, don't you think ? Only missing releasedates is more serious than betadates

Alright, here's the deal. Either give me a release date, a publisher, or a pre-order website.
If you can't do ONE of those, you have no case.
What exactly are you saying? That AoC will be laggy 100% of the time? Given that the game has not been released yet, you know this how exactly? At least AoC will have a chance TO BE laggy unlike some vaporware I could tell you about.
Testing does help to reduce lag because not all lag is latency. Clearly you don't understand what you're talking about and are just trolling against AoC.
I don't know what I'm trying to do here. Clearly wasting my time trying to convince idiots but instead succeeding in only being brought down to their level.
Um if I were to troll against AoC, I would do that on the AoC forum not in the DF forum, You are the one trolling Sir.Granted, not all lag are latency but it is by far the most important one in PvP.

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Thats a bit harch to say, dont you think?
I think all MMO players respect your opinion to not wanna play DF, but to wanna take that away from example me....thats pure stupidity.
And then there was Dark and Light. Need we say more?
